The Hydrographic Society UK promotes the science of surveying over and under water and related disciplines. It fosters recognised standards of education and training for those engaged in, or intending to engage in, the hydrographic profession. For this purpose, the Society maintains an Education Fund providing practical assistance to those at, or near, the start of their careers.

The Society, which is a UK registered charity and a member of the International Federation of Hydrographic Societies, operates in conjunction with the Federation in the regular promotion and organisation of symposia, seminars and technical workshops at a regional, national and international level as well as by working with other bodies associated with surveying and associated marine sciences.

As well as receiving the Society's own magazine soundings and its regular e-Bulletin and e-Messages, members have access to publications issued by the IFHS including IFHS News and the Special Publications series. Members also enjoy discounted delegate fees at Society and IFHS conferences and events.

The Society also operates a Post-Nominal & Fellowship Scheme which is open to all Individual, Retired, Student and New Graduate members. The appropriate post-nominal (e.g. AHydSoc, MHydSoc or FHydSoc) varies according to type and/or length of membership. Fellowships are awarded to successful nominees in recognition of their outstanding contribution to the profession and/or Society.

Additional benefits for Corporate and Associate Corporate Members include opportunities to publish news items on the website, in e-Bulletins and in soundings as well as a range of discounted advertising opportunities, including recruitment advertising.

The Hydrographic Society UK has several well-established and active Regions offering members a range of local services, technical meetings which may be counted towards Continuing Professional Development, social events and opportunities to meet up with colleagues. These operate in East Anglia, Scotland, North West, Southern and South West England and in Ireland. Alternatively, members may opt to join the International Region.

In addition, members either currently undertaking relevant full-time education* or who have graduated within the last three years* may also opt to join the Student & New Graduate Chapter.

Further information about the Society, its programme of events, resource downloads, Post-Nominal & Fellowship Scheme and Regional contacts are available on its website.
