The governance professional’s role is to enforce a compliance framework to safeguard the integrity of the organisation and to promote high standards of ethical behaviour. Chartered Secretary is the peak professional qualification in this arena.

Introductory CertificateThe Introduction to Corporate Governance and Administration is an entry level certificate and offers broad-based business education to learners who aspire to the entry level professional status of Affiliate member of CIBM (Chartered Institute of Business Management).

Learners are required to have a basic competency in the written English (first or second) language at NQF level 4. Numeracy competency indicated by an NQF level 4 pass in Mathematics, Mathematical Literacy or Accounting is required. Students who are not competent in mathematics are advised to consider an initial year of study in the Mathematics for Access short course programme or Business Accounting with Pastel, earning a certificate of competence from Wits Plus. Computer literacy will be a distinct advantage.

The certificate will provide learners with the foundational and practical knowledge and skills required in a variety of workplaces where an understanding of business economics, communication, law and finance is necessary.

Modules offered at this level:

General Principles of Commercial Law: On completion of this topic students will have an in-depth understanding of the legal requirements for the formation of contracts; the remedies for breach of contract and the requirements of specific contracts.

Duration: 14 weeks (offered in both semesters)

Economics: Students will be able to demonstrate an introductory knowledge of the basic principles of economics together with its relevance and application to economic policies. They will also be able to demonstrate an understanding of economic principles in the South African context.

Duration: Full year

Communications: Students will understand and apply the principles, concepts and strategies of communication. Students will gain an understanding of the nature of human communication and of the barriers to communication.

Duration: 14 weeks (offered in both semesters)

Financial Accounting I: Students will understand and apply the basic principles of bookkeeping and accounting to the preparation of a simple set of accounting records.

Intermediate CertificateThe Intermediate course offers broad-based business education to learners who wish to advance their career by becoming a Licentiate member of CIBM (Chartered Institute of Business Management) - subject to CSSA rules and requirements.

The intermediate level is aimed at working people performing junior or intermediate management functions, administrative, financial or company officer functions, or holding more advanced supervisory positions. It will add value to the qualifying learner’s employability. Learners are expected to have completed the Introductory Corporate Governance and Administration or an equivalent and comparable certificate or qualification at NQF level 6 offered by other Higher Education Institutions.

Modules offered at this level:

Management Information Systems: Students will understand basic principles of business information systems and systems development.

Duration: 14 weeks (offered in both semesters)

Management Principles: Students will understand basic business management principles.

Duration: 14 weeks (offered in semester 1 ONLY)

Taxation: Students will handle individual and corporate tax returns timeously and accurately in accordance with the Income Tax Act.

Duration: Full year

Financial Accounting II: Students will demonstrate a thorough knowledge of financial accounting principles and their applications, as well as a basic knowledge of corporate financial accounting.

Duration: Full year

Advanced Commercial Law: This module aims to provide students with an understanding of the fundamental principles of specific and focused areas of commercial law with reference to the applicable statutory and regulatory mechanisms. It further endeavours to provide the necessary skills for the practical application of those principles.

Duration: 14 weeks (offered in both semesters)

Advanced CertificateThe Advanced Certificate programme offers broad-based business education to learners who aspire to Associate membership of CIBM (Chartered Institute of Business Management) - subject to CSSA rules and requirements.

Learners will need to have successfully completed the Wits Plus Introductory (NQF 6) and Intermediate Certificates (NQF 6) in Corporate Governance and Administration or a qualification offered by other higher Education Institutions that is deemed to be equivalent.

Modules offered at this level:

Corporate Law: Students will understand in detail legislation as applied to corporate bodies. The successful student gains the ability to apply such knowledge to practical situations and is able to provide suitable advice.

Duration: 14 weeks (offered in both semesters)

Strategic Management: Students interpret the strategic management decisions made by an organisation by referring to the components that comprise the strategic planning, strategy implementation and control phases.

Duration: 14 weeks (offered in semester 2 ONLY)

Management Accounting: Students apply the principles and tools of cost and management accounting relative to the making of investment decisions on behalf of the organisation.

Duration: Full year

Financial Accounting III: Students will learn to demonstrate a thorough knowledge of advanced financial accounting as detailed in the relevant statutes and statements, with reference to the Companies Act, Close Corporations Act, Income Tax Act (including Capital Gains Tax) as well as relevant present and future Statements of Generally Accepted Accounting Practice (GAAP).

Payment of Fees A non-refundable application fee of R250.00 is payable upon application and will be deducted from the course fees once registered. The fees for all courses are the responsibility of the individual attending the course. All fees must be paid prior to registration. Payment can be made by electronic payment or bank deposits. You will then need to bring your original deposit slip or proof of payment to registration day, the dates of which will be provided in your acceptance letter.

Term DatesThe university calendar runs from February to November each year, with a one week break half way through the course/semester.

CSSA ExemptionStudents with tertiary qualifications may apply to CSSA for exemption from certain courses or programmes. There is an exemption fee payable to CSSA which is NOT included in the Wits Plus tuition fees.
