1.1. OURWORKWITHTHECORPORATESECTOR

Thetimetoactisnow.Wehaveputinplaceaglobalconservationstrategythatreflectsthewaytheworldischanging,meetsthebigenvironmentalchallengesoftheageandhelpsussimplify,uniteandfocusoureffortsforgreaterimpact.

WWFwill continue todeliver locally in crucialecoregionsaround theworldbut sharpenourfocusonsixglobalgoals–wildlife,forests,oceans,freshwater,climateandenergy,andfood–andthreekeydriversofenvironmentaldegradation–markets,financeandgovernance.WearecreatingglobalcommunitiesofpracticeforeachofthegoalsanddriverscomposedofspecialistsfromWWF and key external partners. This will foster greater collaboration and innovation,incubatingnewideasandtakingpromisingonestoscale,asweuniteoureffortstowardmakingambitioustargetsareality.

Weknowthatoneorganizationalonecan’teffectthechangeneeded.Thatiswhyourworkonthegoalsanddriversincludesourpartnershipswithinstitutionsandcorporations,bothlocalandglobal.Thechangeswewanttoseeintheworldcanonlycomeaboutthroughtheeffortsofmanyactors:localcommunitiesandnationalandmultinationalcorporations,governmentsandNGOs,financeinstitutionsanddevelopmentagencies,consumersandresearchers.

Therehasneverbeenastrongersenseofurgencyforaction.InWWFwearedefiningnewwaysofworkingtogethertomakeadifferenceatascalethatmatters.Weknowwemustredefinehumanity’srelationshipwiththeplanet.Andtogetherwepassionatelybelievewecan.

WWF’smission istostopthedegradationoftheplanet’snaturalenvironmentandtobuildafuture in which humans live in harmony with nature. As the 2018 Living Planet Reportdemonstrates, the challenges that the global environment is facing today are too big, toointerconnectedandtoourgentforanyoneorganizationtosolvealone.Therefore,WWFseekstoworkwiththosewhohavethegreatestpotentialtoreducethemostpressing threats to the diversity of life on Earth and together find solutions to conservationchallengessuchasdeforestation,over-fishing,waterscarcityandclimatechange.Thecorporatesectordrivesmuchoftheglobaleconomy,soweconsiderthatcompaniesalsohaveaspecificresponsibilitytoensurethatthenaturalresourcesandecosystemsthatunderpintheirbusinessare used sustainably. Companies are also primed to lead on rapid adaptation and on theinnovativesolutionsneededtodrivechange.Byworkingwiththecorporatesector,WWFaimstochangebehavioranddriveconservationresultsthatwouldnotbepossibleotherwise.Morespecifically,ourworkwiththecorporatesectoraspirestodothisby:

• promotingbetterproductionandresponsiblesourcingofrawmaterialsthatotherwisedrivedeforestationorunsustainableuseofwater;

• encouragingaswitchawayfromfossilfuelsto100percentrenewableenergyandawayfromfossilfuels;

• engagingjointlyonpublicpolicy;• supportingtheequitablesharingofnaturalresources;• redirecting financial flows to support conservation and sustainable ecosystem

management;• raisingawarenessoftheneedtoconsumemorewisely;and

• protectingsomeoftheworld’smostecologicallyimportantplaces.Wedothisinavarietyofways,includingsupportingregulationsthatstopillegalorunsustainableactivities, encouraging companies and industry platforms such as the UN Global Compact,ScienceBasedTargets,theConsumerGoodsForum)tomakeambitiouscommitments(andtoengageinpublicpolicydiscussionsatglobalandlocallevel,andsupportingcrediblecertificationschemes(e.g.ForestStewardshipCouncil(FSC),MarineStewardshipCouncil(MSC)AquacultureStewardship Council (ASC), Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO), Roundtable onResponsible Soy (RTRS). We also publish scorecards and reports on company or sectorperformance(e.gpalmoilscorecard;soyscorecard,andsustainablecottonranking),mobilizepublicpressurethroughhigh-profilecampaignsonissuesrelatedtobusinessactivities(e.g.SeizeYour Power, Virunga, Reviving the Oceans Economy), as well as work in partnership withindividualcompanies.This report presents an overviewof thepartnerships thatWWF-Ecuador haswith individualcompanies.

1.3. WWF’sCORPORATEPARTNERSHIPSOurcooperationwithpartnersisbasedonacommonunderstandingofissues,sharedambitionsoractivities,andawillingnesstospeakoutinpublic.Ingeneral,wedistinguishthreetypesofpartnershipswithcompanies:

1.Drivingsustainablebusinesspractices;2.Communicationsandawarenessraising;and3.Philanthropicpartnerships.

DrivingsustainablebusinesspracticesOurpartnershipsaimtodeliverdirectconservationresultsonkeyissuesorinpriorityplacesbychangingpracticesthroughoutacompany’soperationsandvaluechain.Theseintendtoreducethe major environmental impacts of some of the world’s largest companies, achieveconservationresults thatwouldnototherwisebepossible,and influencerelatedsectorsandmarkets.CommunicationsandawarenessraisingThe second way thatWWF partners with the private sector is by raising awareness of keyenvironmentalissuesandmobilizingconsumeractionthroughcommunicationsandcampaigns(including cause-relatedmarketing campaigns). These partnerships also aim to highlight thebeauty and uniqueness of WWF’s priority places and species. This approach includes, forexample,consumeractions toencouragethepurchaseofsustainableproductssuchasMSC-certifiedfish,orresultsincompaniessupportingcampaignsthatinspireactioninfavorofspecialplacessuchastheArcticorendangeredspecieslikethetiger.PhilanthropicpartnershipsThe third approach is articulated through specific programmes with companies to fundconservationprojectsand the institutions thatdeliver them.Philanthropic relationshipswithcompaniesraisemoneyfortheconservationofkeyplacesandspecies,andthecapabilityandtoolstodeliversuchconservationimpact.

WWF partners on a philanthropic or awareness-raising level with companies that areundertaking substantial action to improve their sustainability performance, or that havenegligibleenvironmentalimpacts.As this report shows, many partnerships with companies use a combination of theseapproaches.WWFworkswithcompaniestoachieveourconservationgoals.NGOandcompanypartnershipsinvolveengaginginconstructivedialoguewhilechallengingeachotherwithrealissues.Assuch,theyinvolveopportunitiesandrisksforbothparties.AtWWF,wemanagetherisksbyhavingclearguidelinesandcriteriainplace,includingaduediligenceprocess.Inallrelationships,wemaintainandexercisetherighttopubliccommentary.

1.4. TRANSPARENCYANDACCOUNTABILITY

Results and impact, both qualitative and quantitative, are essential for us. We advocatetransparencyinactionbyallstakeholdersasacrucialsteptowardsustainability.Webelievethataccountability for results and transparency to our supporters and ourmembers on howwedeliverthoseresultsarekeytoourapproachofworkinginaconstructive,cooperativemannerwithallourpartners,includingthecorporatesector.Wewantallourpartnershipswithcompaniestodeliverthegreatestimpactpossible,withthegoalofcreating lasting resultsat scale.Wehave, therefore, startedaprocessofdeeperandmoresystematicassessmentofthetargetsandtheoutcomesweachieveinourworkwiththeprivatesectorandspecificallythroughourbilateralpartnerships.AllWWFofficesarecommittedtocontinuereportingpubliclyonallourcompanyrelationships,theirintent,objectivesandimpacts,ofwhichthisreportisonepart.

1.5. THISREPORTTheaimofthisreport istogiveanoverviewofthepartnershipsthatWWF-Ecuadorhaswithindividual companies. Funds obtained through corporate partnerships are typically used byWWFto:

• WorkwiththecompanytoreduceitsimpactsandfootprintandtohelpshiftsectorsandmarketstowardsustainabilityinlinewithWWF’sglobalconservationstrategy;

• Raisepublicawarenessofkeyconservationchallenges;• DirectlysupportWWFconservationprojects.

WWF-Ecuador is responsible forthe(contractual)agreementwiththecompaniesconcerned.Theactivitiesoftheengagementsinmanycasestakeplaceinothercountriesorregions.Infinancialyear2018,thetotalincomefrombusinessrepresentlessthan1%ofthetotalWWF-Ecuadorincome.
