The Future with ALPHA

Lucite International’s proprietary, patented ALPHAtechnology is a high-yield, low-cost, two-stage process thatliberates the MMA industry from its dependence ontraditional raw materials.

The Company’s first world-scale ALPHA plant in Singaporeis now fully operational and has an initial capacity of 115kteper annum.

World-class Performance

Lucite International has the most diverse assetcapability of all the major acrylic producers with 22plants at 14 manufacturing sites worldwide. TheCompany’s manufacturing facilities benefit from on-going investment to sustain high quality, cost-efficientand reliable processes with a focus on continuousimprovement.

All assets are run within the framework of LuciteInternational’s own Manufacturing Excellenceprogram, which has already delivered significantbenefits including: improved safety, productivity andproduct quality, increased capacity and lower costs.

The Company’s Safety and Health performance isbetter than the recognised leaders in the chemicalssector and exceeds that of the manufacturing industryas a whole.

Lucite International was the first MMA producer tohave successfully adopted a 3-year overhaul cycle(the norm being a 2-year cycle) – releasing additionalcapacity from existing assets.






1930s First commercialization of MMA by ICI. MMA and Perspex® production begins in UK. MMA and Lucite® production started by DuPont in USA.

1960s Major expansion by DuPont and ICI in USA and Europe. 1970s ICI expands into Asia producing MMA in Taiwan.

Lucite International’s proprietary Manufacturing Excellence program has been in continuousoperation at all sites for more than fifteen years and provides a common framework for theCompany to achieve the highest levels of manufacturing performance.

Manufacturing Excellence is a structured programcomprising eleven elements. It enables site teams to:benchmark performance against world-class metricsand other plants, develop improvement plans whichaddress opportunities to increase financial value, andto implement new practices that will realizeopportunities and create value.

The program is documented comprehensivelyand includes links to most of the well-knownimprovement techniques used within themanufacturing industry today, including: LeanManufacturing, Total Productive Maintenanceand Six Sigma.

Lucite International was the first MMAmanufacturer worldwide to adopt a 3-yearMMA plant overhaul cycle (norm being 2-years).

Higher levels of plant utilization, efficiency andquality have enabled tight control of costs andhigher levels of productivity. Productivity,based on actual production and total man-power productivity (including contractors), hasincreased by 75% since 1996.

Manufacturing Excellence is deliveringsubstantial improvements in safety,capacity, productivity, product qualityand cost performance across theCompany.

It has also enabled Lucite International tosuccessfully deliver the world scale newtechnology Alpha plant on time, in full and tobudget.

REACH is the largest, most complex piece ofchemicals legislation for more than 30 years. Itsaim is to protect human health and theenvironment from potentially hazardouschemicals and it will change the way chemicalsare purchased, used and sold within theEuropean Union.

Lucite International is well prepared for the challengeand opportunity that REACH brings to its business. Amulti-disciplined project team is handling both thestrategic and day-to-day management of compliance.

The REACH team draws on the extensive knowledgeand experience of people from all business functionsto provide practical help and advice about REACHinternally, and to customers, suppliers and partners inthe supply chain.

Lucite International is also contributing to thedevelopment of technical guidance for theimplementation of REACH by working with tradeassociations and industry groups.

China


By 2010 China is expected to be the third largest MMA market in the world. Recognizing this potential, ledLucite International to build a world-scale, 108kte MMA plant at a dedicated chemicals zone in Caojing, 70kmfrom the Company’s sales offices in Shanghai.

The plant came on stream early in 2005, under budget and with zero injuries. The facility provides anexcellent cost base and service to the Chinese market. Lucite International has a strong position in China witha local sales force servicing a broad base of customers across many sectors. It is this expanding list of loyalcustomers and partners that is driving Lucite International’s growth in the region.


China


Introducing ALPHA

The first commercial process for MMA was developed by ICI (Lucite International heritage)in the 1930s and around 70% of current world production still uses that process.

Lucite International identified the opportunity for a radical new route toMMA in order to achieve a step change in the industry’s economics.

The demanding remit targeted:- readily available raw materials with option to scale to 200kte+- high conversion efficiency- low environmental impact- major step change in variable costs and capital efficiency.

Lucite International scientists took over 12 years to develop and demonstrate the new Alphaprocess, first with extensive lab work and then via a dedicated pilot plant built to reflect all thefeatures of a full-scale production unit.


A Revolutionary New Technology


Alpha 1 is the first world-scale commercial plant based on the newAlpha technology. The 115kte plant is a ʻFirst-in-Classʼ operationbuilt in Singapore close to the fastest growing market, where itbenefits from a highly trained local workforce, excellent internationallogistics and integration with major suppliers.

Alpha 1 was commissioned and became fully operational in 2008 at aninitial capacity of 115kte. Whereas the goal for Alpha 1 is to demonstratethe commercial viability of the technology, Alpha 2 will demonstrate its fulleconomic and scale benefits. The location and timing of a 200kte+ Alpha 2plant is currently under review.

Alpha technology development work continues with work underway onnew catalysts and supporting process technology that will further enhancethe economics and capital efficiency.

Lucite International recognized the need to rebase the economics of theglobal acrylics industry. We have the vision, drive and ambition toprogress and are now delivering Alpha technology as the way forward forthe future.

The application‘Virtual integration’ is how the relationship worksbetween Lucite International and its advancedtechnology customer, Chi Mei. It’s a partnershipthat began in 1978 and has gone from strengthto strength over the years. Today Chi Mei usesMMA to create acrylic sheet with outstandinglight transmission properties and ultra low levelsof contamination that form the basis ofbacklights for LCD panels on laptops andmonitors.
