O LORD, BE MY HELP Today we encounter readings that draw us into the mys-tery of suffering and death. In the past few years we have witnessed the devastation of life and property through earthquakes and hurricanes. So many lifted their lament to God, simply asking, "Why?" This is an honest expres-sion of anger toward a God who we believe is the giver of life. When we lose a loved one, we can wonder why the presence of Christ is not enough to make that person rise, even from death, as did the little girl in today's Gospel passage. Again we raise our voices and ask, "Why?" At moments such as these, let us make the prayer of the psalmist our own: "Hear, O LORD, and have pity on me; O LORD, be my helper." Let us pray that our mourning will one day be turned into dancing.

From The Pastor’s Desk

Dear Parishioners,

Beginning July 1st I will be away from the parish on vacation. Fr. Brian Eburn, our weekend visiting priest, will do the masses and reside in the rectory throughout the week. I will return at the end of the month. Fr. Leslie Knight, our usual summer visitor, told me his health is compromised and needs to decline helping this summer. Please pray for his health.

As I mentioned this past weekend, we will have Va-cation Bible School in July. Elisa Schiavo, our Youth Minister, will be conducting VBS this year. VBS will take place July 23-27 at the Marian Hall. Pre-school to 6th grade children are welcome to attend. This event is free of charge! Elisa and her volunteers will be availa-ble after all the weekend masses to sign your children up.

Concerning cell phones at mass, we are noticing that a number of parishioners are leaving the ringer on and even at times answering it in the middle of the service. Please, out of respect to everyone in the church, includ-ing the priest celebrating mass, either put your phone on vibrate only or turn it off. It is very distracting when, during the consecration, a phone goes off in someone’s purse and the parishioner simply lets it ring until it goes to voicemail. Even more distracting and a disrespectful is when a worshipper’s phone goes off and the person answers the call and proceeds to walk outside to talk. Unless you are a doctor on call, please remember to silence your phone and wait to check your calls once mass is finished. Thank you.

And now some funnies:

#1 - The Blind Cowboy.....He wanders over to a bar stool and asks the bartender for a shot of Jack Daniels. He sits there for a while, then calls out to the bartend-er. “Hey, you wanna hear a blonde joke?” At that point the entire bar falls deadly silent. In a very deep, husky voice, the woman next to him says, “Before you tell that joke, cowboy, I think it is on-ly fair, given that you are blind, that you should know five things: 1. The bartender is a blonde girl with a baseball bat. 2. The bouncer is a blonde girl with a club. 3. I'm a 6-foot tall, 175-pound blonde woman with a black belt in Karate. 4. The woman sitting next to me is blonde and a professional weight lifter. 5. The lady to your right is blonde and a professional

Wrestler. ”Now, think about it seriously, cowboy... Do you still wanna tell that blonde joke?” The blind cowboy thinks for a second, shakes his head and mutters, “No, not if I'm gonna have to explain it five times.”

#2 - An attendant on a cross-country flight nervously announced: "I don't know how this happened, but we have 103 passengers aboard and only 40 dinners." When the passengers' muttering had died down, she continued, "Anyone who is kind enough to give up his meal so someone else can eat will receive free drinks for the length of the flight." Her next announcement came an hour later. "If anyone wants to change his mind, we still have 29 dinners available!"

#3 - As a crowded airliner is about to take off, the peace is shattered by a 5-year-old boy who picks that moment to throw a wild temper tantrum. No matter what his frustrated, embarrassed mother does to try to calm him down, the boy continues to scream furiously and kick the seats around him. Suddenly, from the rear of the plane, an elderly man in the uniform of an Air Force General is seen slowly walking forward up the aisle. Stopping the flus-tered mother with an upraised hand, the white-haired, courtly, soft-spoken General leans down and, motion-ing toward his chest, whispers something into the boy's ear. Instantly, the boy calms down, gently takes his mother's hand, and quietly fastens his seat belt. All the other passengers burst into spontaneous applause. As the General slowly makes his way back to his seat, one of the cabin attendants touches his sleeve. "Excuse me, General," she asks quietly, "but could I ask you what magic words you used on that little boy?" The old man smiles serenely and gently confides, "I showed him my pilot's wings, service stars, and battle ribbons, and explained that they entitle me to throw one passenger out the plane door on any flight I choose."

I realize how painful it is not to be understood, and especial-ly by those whom one loves and with whom one has been very open. But suffice it to know that I understand all your troubles and misery. There-fore, I have remained on earth to comfort your aching heart and to fortify your soul, so that you will not falter on the way. A suffering soul is closest to My heart (1487)

We are in the season of the Incarnation, the mystery of God's love poured out in Christ's birth. The word derives from the Latin carnis meaning "flesh." Throughout history, some Christians have distrusted the "flesh," and stressed a hatred of this world and its pleasures. Perhaps they have not paid enough attention to how "embodied" the sacraments are. One third-century author put it plainly in an image that may alarm diet-conscious Americans, explaining that we wash the body so the soul can be cleansed, that we anoint the body so the soul can be strengthened, and that we eat the body and blood of Christ so that "the soul can fatten on God." Catholics "get" that God is revealed in this world. The sacraments use the "stuff" of creation: water and oil; the senses of the body, touch and taste and smell. We use the things of this world rightly. After all, God's love poured out into human flesh means the world has eternal value. Why else would Jesus describe the kingdom to come as a teeming city or a marriage banquet? Catholics are realists, and no-where is that more evident than when we gather for a sacra-ment.
