The Feast of Corpus Christi reminds us of God’s love is

never ending even to the point of allowing the sacrifice of His Son on the Cross. The Passion of Jesus expresses the desire of the Father that we live in His grace all the days of our lives. We often fail to recognize the immensity of this gift from the Father. What are we willing to sacrifice to show our love for the Father?

Giving praise and thanksgiving and asking for forgiveness of our sins through sacrifice, originated with the children of Adam and Eve and even today persists in our faith. In the fourth chapter of Genesis, we read of Abel’s offering the choicest portions of his flock and Cain’s unaccepted gift of the produce grown from the land. Although Genesis does not provide the reason for the rejection of Cain’s offering, we can imagine several reasons. Cain may not have given the choicest part of his grain, giving only the weedy and moldy portions that Cain would not eat or could not plant. Another possibility is that Cain may have given up a minimal amount to God forgetting that all he reaped occurred only through the grace of God. The readiness to give up everything is what Abraham was willing to do when God asked him to sacrifice his son, Isaac. Sacrifice, to this degree, is not an expectation from God, but we cannot exclude any part of our lives as an offering to God.

Equating a sacrifice with an obligation indicates we are thinking like Cain, not giving to God with an open heart. If we make offerings to God because we are afraid of the threats of hell, we will never be able to buy our way into heaven. If we cover our bases with valueless promises to avoid the wrath of God, He will reject these empty sacrifices. If we use sacrifice to avoid punishment, then we still need to learn that God has only His love to offer to us.

Giving sacrifice to the Lord, therefore, should not be taken lightly. Offering a sacrifice should not be an obligation that we grudgingly feel required to do, but an opportunity to acknowledge that our whole existence and essence is possible only because of the love God has for each of us. Sacrifice is our way of saying that nothing in our lives has more value that our love of God. Our sacrifice does not mean that we suffer compromising our well-being, for our God is not vengeful God. We do not have an obligation to sacrifice to Him in payment the death of His Son. Instead, our sacrifice is made in love just as the sacrifice of Jesus was made in love.

We sacrifice ourselves when we act or pray on behalf another, or we when we give praise or thanksgiving to the Lord. We manifest our sacrifice in many different ways; tithing from what we gain through our work, or setting aside a portion of our week to assist others in need. Even taking moments throughout of our day to pray is a sacrifice. Each of these opportunities is a meaningful sacrifice when we offer them up to God with a thankful heart.

We see God’s love expressed fully by the Passion of Jesus when he showed us the ultimate sacrifice. In each Mass, we have the opportunity to enter into this sacrifice by the reception Jesus into our being through the Holy Eucharist. In acknowledging Jesus’ sacrifice for us, we can begin to understand the meaning of sacrifice when we offer to the Lord all that we have and are.

May the Body and Blood of Jesus infuse your life with the love of God.

Treasures From Our Tradition The origins of today’s solemnity lie in thirteenth-century Belgium. In those days, people seldom received Holy Communion, and never from the chalice. A nun in a troubled convent, Juliana of Liège, devoted her life to stirring up love for the Eucharist, lobbying for a feast day to honor the Blessed Sacrament with Masses and processions. Juliana may have been inspired by the Ascension Day processions in nearby Bruges. Crusaders brought a treasure home to Bruges from Constantinople in 1204: a reliquary said to contain a cloth from Joseph of Arimathea with which he had helped prepare the body of Jesus for burial. The stain on the cloth was said to be the holy blood itself, and so the people of Bruges built a great basilica to house the relic. Bruges became a great center of pilgrimage because of this treasure, and the procession of the Holy Blood is still one of the greatest festivals in Belgium today. The bishop carries the relic through the narrow streets, and the people wear medieval costumes and act out scenes from the Bible. Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

The Greatest Gift Today is Corpus Christi, the feast of the Eucharist. The feast of Corpus Christi was established in the thirteenth century and is celebrated throughout the Catholic Church today. Saint Thomas Aquinas, the great theologian and doctor of the Church, is given credit for many of the customs and hymns associated with Corpus Christi. In some ways every Sunday is a feast of the Eucharist. As early as the fourth century, Saint Cyril of Jerusalem instructed communicants: “Do not come forward with the palms of the hands outstretched nor with fingers apart, but making the left hand a throne for the right since this hand is about to receive the King. Making the palm hollow, receive the Body of Christ, adding Amen.” When we participate in the Mass and receive Communion we are honoring and celebrating the precious gift of the Lord’s own Body and Blood. Communion is a fulfillment of Christ’s promise to be always with us. Yet, by the Middle Ages the laity rarely received Communion. What became all important was to “see God” as the priest raised the consecrated host and chalice. So it remained, until Saint Pius X (1835–1914) returned us to the earlier tradition by advocating frequent Communion for the laity. In the last century attention to Eucharistic devotions declined, while more people received frequent Communion. Recent efforts to revitalize adoration of Jesus in the Eucharist, through Perpetual Adoration, Corpus Christi celebrations, and Eucharistic Congresses have brought us back into balance. And whether we receive Jesus or adore him in the reserved sacrament, he always requires a response from us. At the end of every Mass we are sent forth to love and serve the Lord. He gives us his very self—the greatest gift of all—so that we can go into the world and give in return. Copyright © 2011, World Library Publications. All rights reserved.

Celebrating Sunday for Catholic Families

Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ

Gospel: Mark 14:22-25

On the Way to Mass: Why is the Sacrament of the Eucharist so central to our faith? On the Way Home From Mass: For those who received Communion today what did you experience? Living the Word: “We come to share our story, we come to break the bread” begins the Communion hymn “Song of the Body of Christ.” Story and community are linked because in community we share our story and in community we act as the Body of Christ. Suggest that the family contact grandparents, other relatives, and close friends for a story-sharing circle. Relatives who are far away can be apart of the circle by phone. Ask each person to share an important story from their life and end by together telling a story all of you know.

The Totus Tuus Curriculum The Sacred Scriptures and the Catechism of the Catholic Church provide the foundation of the catechetical instruction of the Totus Tuus summer catechetical program. One of the unique features of Totus Tuus is the two independent cycles of catechetical materials. The six core topics of catechesis (which come by dividing the four pillars of the Catechism into six major elements) and the four mysteries of the Rosary make certain that every summer has an original presentation of material for the students. This year the content focus will be

The Apostles’ Creed and the Luminous Mysteries of the

Rosary. Totus Tuus seeks to foster openness to vocations in the young people we serve as well as among the teachers. This is accomplished by placing special emphasis on the importance and necessity of prayer, Eucharistic devotion, and Marian devotion in addition to catechetical instruction and formation in the Catholic faith. If your are interested in hosting the female or the male team of leaders please contact the RE Office for more information. See the next page for the enrollment form ...
