John Therry Catholic High School Term 2 Week 5A
“Recta Sapere” To Know, Love and Relish what is Right and Just
Corpus Christi Procession - SUNDAY 29 MAY – 2.30 PM AT OUR LADY HELP OF CHRISTIANS
PARISH ROSEMEADOW – PRESIDER AND PREACHER – BISHOP PETER INGHAM D.D. - Liturgy of the word - Eucharistic Procession of Blessed Sacrament - Rosary - Benediction
On the Sunday following Trinity Sunday, the Church celebrates the Feast of Corpus Christi, the Body of Christ. The Feast, as such, was first celebrated in the Church in 1246. The Feast was instituted by Christ at the Last Supper when, according to Luke’s gospel, Christ…..”took a piece of bread broke it, and gave it to them saying, ‘This is my body, which is given for you. Do this in memory of me.’”
The celebration of the Body of Christ is available to us anew each time we accept the Eucharist at Mass. When we come together at the Eucharist, Jesus is present offering us life. In the same manner in which ordinary food nourishes human life, the Eucharist nourishes the life of Christ in the believer.
John’s gospel was written about sixty years after Christians had been gathering for the Eucharist. John affirms the action of these Christians when he writes “I am the living bread from heaven, says the Lord;
whoever eats this bread will live forever”. Karen Young Principal
“Lord, Jesus Christ, You gave us Your Body and Blood
in the Eucharist to show us that even now
We share your life. May we come to possess it completely
in the kingdom
Where you live forever and ever. “ Amen. Amen.

National Sorry Day in Australia National Sorry Day is an Australia-wide observance held on May 26 each year. This day gives people the chance to come together and share the steps towards healing for the Stolen Generations, their families and communities. Stolen generations refer to Indigenous Australians who were forcibly removed from their families and communities. Background
The first National Sorry Day was held on May 26, 1998, which was one year after the tabling of a report about the removal of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children from their families. The report, known as Bringing Them Home, acknowledged that Indigenous children were forcibly separated from their families and communities since the early days of European occupation in Australia. Governments and missionaries were responsible for this forced separation.
Systematic removal practices were implemented through various assimilation and “protection” policies by the late 19th century. Many Indigenous children were forcibly taken away from their families in the name of assimilation during the 1950s and 1960s. These children are known as the “Stolen Generations”. They were brought up in institutions or fostered to non-Indigenous families. This removal was official government policy in Australia until 1969.
By the 1980s, by welfare and community groups spoke out that governments' social welfare practices were discriminatory against Indigenous people. This forced a reappraisal of removal and placement practice during the 1980s. In 1980 the family tracing and reunion agency Link-Up (NSW) Aboriginal Corporation was established. Similar services now exist throughout Australia.
Australia’s Prime Minister Kevin Rudd tabled a motion in parliament on February 13, 2008, apologizing to Australia’s Indigenous people, particularly the Stolen Generations and their families and communities, for the laws and policies that inflicted profound grief, suffering and loss. The apology included a proposal for a policy commission to close the gap between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians in matters such as life expectancy, educational achievement, and economic opportunity. This event is seen by many as a step forward in reconciliation.
Sorry Day Prayer Holy Father, God of Love, You are the Creator of this land and of all good things.
We acknowledge the pain and shame of our history and the suffering of our peoples, and we ask your forgiveness. We thank you for the survival of indigenous cultures.
Our hope is in you because you gave your Son Jesus to reconcile the world to you.
We pray for your strength and grace to forgive, accept and love one another, as you love us and forgive and accept us in the sacrifice of your Son. Give us the courage to accept the realities of our history so that we may build a better future for our nation. Teach us to repect all cultures. Teach us to care for our land and waters. Help us to share justly the resources of this land. Help us to bring about spiritual and social change to improve the quality of life for all groups in our communities, especially the disadvantaged. Help young people to find true dignity and self-esteem by your Spirit. May your power and love be the foundations on which we build our families, our communities and our nation, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen

“Recta Sapere” To Know, Love and Relish what is Right and Just
Term 2 continues to move past us at a busy pace and there are many important events and activities in the second half of the term that are briefly outlined below.
We look forward to seeing those who can make it to the Conolly Working Bee being held this Saturday 28th May from 8am.
Week 7
Monday 6th June: Year 9 (6:30pm) & Year 11 (7:30pm) 2017 Subject Selection Evening will take place in the School Hall.
Thursday 9th June: Macarthur Careers Expo is on for Year 10 and selected senior students.
Week 8
Thursday and Friday 16th and 17th June: Midsummer Nights Dream – School Production takes place in the School Hall.
Week 10
Monday 27th June: Year 7 to 10 report distribution takes place.
Thursday 30th June: Parent / Teacher / Student interviews will be taking place from 3:30pm-8:00pm and continuing on Friday 1st July from 9:00am – 10:30am.
This is a most important event and we ask all families to prioritise attendance at these interviews. It is a key opportunity to discuss how each child is progressing and sends a clear message about the importance of their education.
School staff will spend the remainder of the day on the 1st July completing an accredited Suicide Prevention training workshop and students will not be required to attend school on this day.
Detailed information about the above events is also distributed through permission notes and/or the school newsletter. A reminder that the school is continuing to expand the use of the ‘Skoolbag’ app that organises the many notes and resources sent out by school and we encourage parents to make use of this to help improve communication between school and home.
God Bless

Team Coach Result Comment
7 Boys Soccer
Mr Cook Lost 2-0
The boys played very well in windy conditions. The boys passed the ball around very well, keeping possession whilst having numerous shots on goal. The ball just didn’t bounce our way today. Macarthur scored off an uncontested header from a corner and a poor 1v1 challenge late in the game. Many consistent performances throughout the midfield once again, but the MVP was a standout. MVP: Tasmyn Reynolds
8/9 Boys Soccer
Mr Goodhew Won 3-2
An excellent effort from all players today. Despite going down 1-0 early, the team continued to play good football and were rewarded. Kyle Kalabric set up Brenton McGee for a goal before scoring one himself. Finally, Lachlan Gentle scored a 35 m screamer to win the match. MVP: Brenton McGee + Joshua Anderson
10-12 Boys Soccer
Mr Williamson Won 5-2
Exciting second half with 7 goals scored. Three to Cameron O’Neill and two to Jordan Ward. Well done to goalkeeper Jorge Monsalve who saved many close chances. MVP: Jordan Ward + Cameron O’Neill
7-9 Boys Hockey
Mrs White Lost 2-0
This was a great game. Our boys defended like champions and often turned defence into offense. Unfortunately our boys could not capitalise on these opportunities and this was the difference between a victory and a loss in the game. MVP: Luke McKay
7-9 Girls Hockey
Mrs Hynard Draw 0-0
Certainly an evenly matched game today even though most of the 25 minute game was spent attacking. Many shots at goal were unfortunately missed. The team were happy with their performance. MVP: Erica Selley
9 Girls Netball
Mrs Pellegrino Won 22-21
The girls played a strong game. Defence was slightly off in the first quarter but brought their A game in the next quarter. Once again, Courtney and Olivia’s shooting skills were on target. Eve played awesome in WD, intercepting and breaking their centre passes. MVP: Eve Nia
10-12 Girls Netball
Ms Dobbins Won 22-17
After a slow start, the girls lifted and played really well as a team with exceptional defence from Jess Bergamin. Improved communication allowed the girls to come away with a much needed win. MVP: Hayley Pope
10-12 Boys Softball
Mr Baca Draw 12-12
An unlucky draw. We out played the opposition until the final hit of the game, where they scored 3 runs, which tied the game up. Great batting by all. MVP: Aidan Mostyn
10-12 Girls Softball
Mr Chapman Won 12-2
All players contributed to an excellent win. JT batted first and dominated Macarthur Anglican with 6 players reaching home. MAS failed to score through some quality fielding and JT made another 6 runs in the second innings. Two runs were conceded in the second innings, but the result was sealed. MVP: Tamarra Cross
10-12 Boys Rugby League
Mr Morris Mr Tannous
Won 40-6
Frequent errors stifled our attack in the first half, but after a half time talk the boys performed much better in the second half scoring 30 unanswered points. MVP: Casey Timmer + Byron Wozniak.

SPORT REPORT TERM 2 2016 Round 4 vs Macarthur Anglican School
In very windy conditions, JT secured 6 wins and 2 draws against Macarthur Anglican. Some very good wins to Open Boys Rugby League team, the netball teams, and the softballers. Some fantastic individual and team performances allowed us to secure most of the rounds points. Great job all MISA students.
St. Benedict’s next week. JT will need to continue their winning streaks to secure more points.
MISA GOLF
A fantastic day of golf for the 2nd Annual MISA Golf Championships. The JT students played some good golf with Bradley Fowler winning the Open Boys Plate event scoring 97. Damian Thomas won the Junior Boys Plate event. Damian also scored a cap with the shot of the day, with a 40ft chip in on the Par 5 5th
hole. Tim Ryan from Wollondilly Anglican College shot 74 to win the day, by far the best golfer of the day.
Special thanks to Camden Lakeside for hosting the event and Mr Ross Whelan, Head of MISA for his presentations and Mr Damian Hatton for his support and assistance on the day.
