EARTH DAY 2019 with the MDOC’s EPIC Recycle Team

Earth Day is an annual event to raise awareness about the importance of

protecting the environment including concerns such as global warming, climate change, clean energy, deforestation and endangered species. The first official observance of Earth Day was April 22, 1970, when 20 million Americans demonstrated coast-to-coast for a healthy, sustainable environment. Thousands of colleges and universities organized protests, along with

groups that had been fighting against oil spills, polluting factories and power plants, raw sewage, toxic dumps, pesticides, the loss of wilderness, and the extinction of wildlife. By the end of that year, the EPA was created and the Clean Air, Clean Water and Endangered Species Acts were passed. In 1990, Earth Day went global and was celebrated worldwide for the first time, with more than 140 nations participating. Present day, many cities extend Earth Day celebrations for an entire week to increase awareness of recycling and encourage people to live greener lifestyles. In correlation with the observance of Earth Day and its positive impact on the planet thus far, the MDOC’s EPIC Green/Recycle Team is eager to announce that it has been working for several months to formulate a recycling plan which will allow

the department to do its part to support the ideals of Earth Day and help reinstate Michigan’s reputation as a leading state in environmental stewardship. The Team’s official kick-off meeting was held on April 11, 2018 at GVP, where Director Washington explained her expectations. The EPIC Recyle/Green Team objectives are as follows: • To develop a department-wide comprehensive recycling plan. • To increase the department’s current recycling activities across all department work sites and find where improvements can be made. • Assess what is being done across the department. • Comply with the Executive Directive on recycling. To gather data regarding what materials the department was currently recycling and how, the entire team compiled an extensive list of recyclable items to include in a survey which was then sent out to all MDOC locations. From the feedback received, the Team then agreed on the top five items to focus our recycling improvements on; paper, cardboard, plastic, batteries and metal. Once the process for recycling these items has been developed, additional recyclable items will be added to increase our overall recycling rate.

Currently, the EPIC Recycle/Green Team is

putting the past year’s work and accumulated information together to create a Recycle

Manual, which will guide all MDOC locations through this process. In future

editions of the Corrections Connection, we will keep you informed of any new team developments, as well as share additional general information on recycling, energy conservation and landfill diversion that can help us go green, protect the earth, save money, and make every day Earth Day!

Change Agent 2019 Candice Dunn Agent of the Year

Jason Maue

While working as a field agent, Jason Maue focuses

on one thing: the influence he has on those he supervises and the people he works with.

Maue began his career with the State of Michigan in

2006 with the Michigan Gaming Control Board and after 4 years he decided he needed a change. He started with the Wayne County Probation Office nine years ago and hasn’t looked back since. Throughout his career, he has supervised specialized caseloads such as sex offenders, veterans and drug court. He involves himself in numerous opportunities to expand his influence and knowledge. Our jobs can have an impact on so many levels, he explains. “I truly enjoy watching and helping facilitate growth,” Maue said. “Successful discharges, especially when there have been lasting changes are a victory. Each of those victories help make our communities safer and better places.”

Maue was named the Michigan Department of Corrections 2019 Candice Dunn Agent of the Year for his consistent dedication to the department. “Jason is incredibly deserving of this high honor. He exemplifies what it means to be an agent in this department,” MDOC Dir. Heidi Washington said. “His commitment to Offender Success, public safety and his community are obvious. And the dedication and professionalism he excudes in the office is making a difference not only with those under his supervision, but with his coworkers and other staff. I truly appreciate his willingness to learn new skills, train his fellow employees and volunteer in a variety of settings.”Maue expands his influence on the department through his involvement using Carey Guides, joining the Traumatic Incident Stress Management team and being a Motivational Interviewing trainer. Maue encourages others to never stop growing and learning in their career. “I have met so many great people and grown professionally,” Maue said. “There is always something new to learn and grow from.” Maue describes being named the 2019 Candice Dunn Agent of the Year a humbling and surreal experience. He said he’s learned from some amazing people during his nine years in the department. “Being named Agent of the Year means that I’ve been able to learn from these people and apply it to my work,” Maue said. “It’s humbling to think I’ve been thought of in the same vein as these influential professionals who I’ve had the pleasure of meeting.”

According to the National Children’s Alliance, nearly 700,000 children are abused in the United States

annually. April is National Child Abuse Prevention month and John Klimowicz, ARUS at Macomb Correctional Facility, is dedicated to creating a safe environment for abused children through Bikers Against Child Abuse (B.A.C.A). B.A.C.A is a non-profit organization designed to provide aid, comfort, safety and support for children who have been abused. The biker group works in conjunction with local and state officials to empower children to not be afraid.Klimowicz was one of the first members of the Wayne County B.A.C.A chapter in 2014. He rides to assist local children in need of physical and emotional support.“Being a child is the best part of one’s life and when an abuser takes that away from the child it disgusts me,” Klimowicz said. “With B.A.C.A, we can get a child back to being a child again and enjoying their life.”B.A.C.A. members information is passed along to a child in need, where they can call upon these bikers to provide the necessary reassurance to feel safe and protected. The bikers often serve as escorts for the child if they feel unsafe in their neighborhood or at court and parole hearings.

B.A.C.A provides the family of an abused child with a sense of hope and security as well.Children are welcomed into the B.A.C.A family with a voluntary short motorcycle ride with the chapter. One

of Klimowicz’s most rewarding experiences was after a ride when he was approached by a grandfather who explained how after years of attempting to get his grandchild to go for a ride with him on his Harley, she finally agreed after riding with B.A.C.A.“Moments like that is why I love B.A.C.A” Klimowicz said. If you are interested in joining one of B.A.C.A’s five Michigan

chapters, visit Michigan.bacaworld.org to select a chapter and attend a meeting.“B.A.C.A is very time consuming,” Klimowicz said. “However, if you are passionate about helping abused children, it is very rewarding.”For those who are unable to join, you can still help by making a monetary donation to B.A.C.A. where 100% of the money raised goes toward empowering an abused child.

Plumber Jordan Lundin was on the scene when a water main broke in the Marquette Branch Prison. To repair the water main, the flow of water needed to be significantly diminished and possibly shut off. The facility is heated by a steam plant, so they were dependent upon water to heat the facility, with wind chills of negative 23 degrees Lundin and the maintenance team worked tirelessly to ensure the break was fixed, facing extremely cold temperatures. Through many setbacks, he stayed focused on fixing the issue and maintaining heat throughout the facility. The water line was repaired, and water restored within 11 hours. Lundin’s communication with staff throughout the day allowed them to plan the facility’s operations accordingly. Lundin’s creative thinking and ability to work under pressure earned him a Good Government Coin.

Warden Tom Winn at Saginaw Correctional Facility presented Corrections Officers Michael Holka and Konnie Smith with 20-year pins and Captain Vincent Turner and Officer Alan Schott with 25-year pins

Standing UnitedEarnest C. Brooks Correctional Facility staff stand together during

difficult time

Following the recent assault of one corrections officer and the sudden loss of another officer in a short period

of time, Director Washington visited Earnest C. Brooks Correctional Facility to extend her sympathies to staff and show her support during this difficult time. In a separate visit, Senator Jon Bumstead of the 34th District toured the facility with his staff to show their support for staff as well. Both made themselves available to staff to answer questions and express their appreciation to all staff that continue to perform their duties professionally. Warden Jackson would like to thank everyone that has shown support for the staff and remind everyone in the MDOC to continue to look out for each other because, “…if we don’t, who will?”

Community OutreachVocational Village Machine Tool instructor creates lesson for Battle

Creek Central High School Students.

Joseph Lienhart, Vocational Village machine tool instructor at Parnall Correctional Facility, built a

lesson for students at Battle Creek Central High School to practice measurements with mics and calipers. The donated project, named SCORE, was made entirely out of leftover materials the facility had from their trades classes. The project contained 100 pieces for students to practice with. Lienhart met with the facilitating teacher to go over the lesson and explain how it should be presented to the students. The principal was thrilled about the lesson. The facility is currently making more projects like this one to donate to local career centers.

Stout StrongStaff host fundraiser to help fellow officer battling cancer

Corrections Officer Stout at the Charles E. Egeler Reception and Guidance Center is

currently battling cancer. Staff at the facili-ty came together to host a fundraiser for the officer. The group raised thousands of dollars selling baked goods, pulled pork and t-shirts as well as auction items, proving no one at Charles E. Egeler Reception and Guidance Center fights alone. Stout was speechless and very grateful when he learned what his co-workers had done. Keep officer Stout in your thoughts as he continues this battle.
