Anjalia Vaid, owner of Advanced Laser Clinic, worked in the IT field as a successful Computer Engineer before leaving her profession in 2001 to open her own business in medical aesthetics. Her passion and desire to help women look and feel better through permanent hair removal led Anjalia to follow her dream of opening her own business. She started her journey by taking several specialized laser aesthetics and business courses offered in Calgary and the US.
Anjalia completed her training and gained her formal certification in laser medicine; she is a member in good standing with the American Society of Laser Medicine and Surgery. In late 2003, Anjalia finally fulfilled her dream when she opened Advanced Laser Clinic.
Initially, Advanced Laser Clinic was a modest, two treatment room facility located on Montreal Road. Even during the first years, Anjalia has always prided herself on providing the best, and most up-to-date treatments to her clients. Being of East Indian descent, Anjalia knows how problematic unwanted hair can be and how much it can affect a woman both physically and emotionally. She wanted to give her customers the most superior service and treatments available to eliminate the unwanted body and facial hair. Permanent hair removal is not only convenient and emotionally empowering, but it’s also cost and time effective.
From the beginning, Anjalia has worked to create a warm, welcoming haven for her clientele. Every client that comes to her clinic is treated with the utmost respect, care, and compassion. Exceptional customer service has been her top priority and is one of the primary reasons for the rapid growth that her clinic experienced in the early years. Word of mouth continues to be one of the clinic’s greatest promotional assets.
As the business flourished, Advanced Laser Clinic quickly outgrew its original location. In 2012, Anjalia relocated her business to St Laurent Boulevard. Knowing what worked and what did not, Anjalia planned every detail of her newer, ultra modern facility. She wanted her new clinic to be as functional and comfortable as possible for her clientele and staff.

Anjalia continually attends training sessions and seminars to stay up-to-date on the latest skin care and laser therapy techniques. She continually travels to places like Los Angeles and San Francisco to learn the newest treatments. In 2015, Anjalia travelled to India where she attended several Ayurveda seminars. She hopes to eventually merge her eastern culture with her western culture by bringing the training she received in India to her Ottawa clinic. Dr. Ben Fong, a 1983 graduate of the University of Toronto
Dental School opened Herongate Dental Clinic as a family
and cosmetic dental clinic in the south of Ottawa south.
In 1996 he realized orthodontics was a crucial part the
cosmetic dentistry, and he started to use conventional
braces for the orthodontic treatment he provided. In
2003, Dr. Fong decided to implement Invisalign, a new
alternative method of orthodontics to his practice. It
was well received by patients as compared to traditional
braces as Invisalign is virtually “invisible”, is comfortable,
easy to maintain, less visits to the office, and because it is
removable, the patient could eat whatever they wanted.
The demand for orthodontics in Dr. Fong’s practice
increased as more adults chose the Invisalign treatment
option to straighten their teeth. Most recently, Dr. Fong
has surpassed the one thousand mark of the number of
Invisalign patients he has seen in his practice. In a candid
interview, Dr. will explain a little bit about his clinic and
how Invisalign became an integral part of his practice.
Question and Answer
Question: Why did you choose orthodontics as your major interest in your practice?
Dr. Fong: Ever since I was a teenager, I was fascinated by people’s
smile and what a difference it could make on a first impression. For
that reason, I choose dentistry as my career when I was finishing high
school. During my dental school years, I was quite captured by cosmetic
dentistry and the technical aspect of the profession. I practice general
dentistry and provide every aspect of dentistry to the community. I
maintain my interest in cosmetics and eventually came to realize that
orthodontics plays a major part in helping to orchestrate a perfect
smile. Crowns and veneers can certainly improve the appearance of
a damaged tooth but orthodontics will create the symmetry and the
perfect alignment of a beautiful smile.
Question: How has your Orthodontic portion of practice grown?
Answer: The majority of my patients come to my practice through
referrals from other patients who are happy and satisfied with my
service. I also get referrals from fellow dentists; for those patients, I
strictly provide orthodontic treatment and refer them back to their
dentist for their routine treatment.
Question: Why do patients prefer Invisalign?
Answer: The most common reason is its inconspicuous presence.
Beside it being comfortable, less office visits, less emergency
appointments, the ease of maintenance is also an important factor as
the patients basically continue with their usual oral hygiene routine;
since they are removable, patients can eat without concern.
Question: What type of information do you provide in your Orthodontic consultation;
Answer: My orthodontic consultations are free of charge. I review the
patient’s main concerns, goals and their expectations. With the patient’s
permission, necessary X-rays (at a fee) are taken. I also explain to the
patient why they have their problems, the cause of it and what they can
expect as a final outcome. I then decide which orthodontic treatment
is best for them with regard to Invisalign or conventional braces. I
also provide an approximate fee and how long it would take for the
treatment to be completed. I show them sample cases from one of
the 1000 plus treatments that I have done over the past 13 years. I also
show some before and after results of cases similar to theirs from the
websites InvisalignResults.ca and BracesResults.ca which contain 800+
before and after treatment of my patients.
Question: How common is it for teeth that have been straightened to move out of alignment?
Answer: Relapse may occur regardless of what method is used to
align the teeth, Invisalign or conventional braces. To avoid relapse, the
continual use of retainer is essential.
Question: Can you go over what the patient can expect from their first appointment to the last appointment?
Answer: Yes, I am more than happy to explain what a patient can expect
at each and every appointment that my Invisalign patients attend to.
Appointment one; the patient comes in for their record and scanning.
All general dentistry, including fillings and cleaning, has to be done
prior to this appointment. The scanning is done with an Itero scanner
which eliminates the need for impressions. The information obtained
is in a digital format and instantly produces a simulated final outcome
of what the patient’s smile will look like. The goals are determined with
the patient and my instructions along with the scan is sent through the
Internet to Invisalign headquarters. The patient specific treatment plan is
then created with an approximate estimate of treatment time.
Second appointment; a week later, I will review with the patient their
Invisalign’s proposed treatment plan, the length of their treatment and
the final outcome of their perfect smile.
Third appointment; two weeks later, the patient will get their first two
to four Invisalign trays. All the instructions are given to the patient with
a handout plus a YouTube video link that describes this appointment in
greater detail. Generally, the patient will wear the trays for one week.
Fourth appointment; two to four weeks later, attachments (small tooth
color structures) are bonded on selected teeth and tooth size reduction
are done accordingly. They will receive the next 6 to 8 Invisalign trays.
The patient will come back for more trays once they have finished the
trays that have been given to them.
During each visit, the patient’s progress is monitored and compared
with what the movements should have been. The number of total visits
will be based on how many total trays the patient have and in general
they are seen every 6 to 8 weeks. On their last treatment visit, specially
formulated retainer trays will be given to the patient with proper
instructions to maintain their long lasting beautiful smile. Two weeks
later, a final inspection is done to ensure the patient’s satisfaction and to
answer any additional questions.

Question; What are your biggest challenges?
Answer; I am very careful with my case selection to avoid
unnecessary challenges. My challenges with Invisalign are
compliance, complexity and patient expectation. Patient compliance
is very important with Invisalign, because of the fact that the patient
has complete control over their treatment. Patients that don’t follow
our rules and do not wear their trays accordingly are certainly one
of Invisalign’s biggest hurdles. Sometimes the patient’s type of work,
their social activities and their carelessness keeps them from their
expected commitment. Complexity of the case is also important
which is why case selection is crucial during the initial consultation.
Expectation is also an issue when it comes to completing the case.
That happens regardless of the method of treatment. I have the
odd case that takes longer than we first anticipated. In rare cases,
when Invisalign treatment does not meet our initial goals, switching
to conventional braces is our final option. Even then, a patient’s
compliance is crucial in obtaining satisfactory results.

HOW TO CHOOSE A GOOD PEDOMETER
Three things to look for: 1 Accuracy Poor-quality pedometers are often too sensitive or not sensitive enough. Do these two quick tests: i) Reset your pedometer to zero, and take 20 steps. An accurate pedometer will record 19 to 21 steps. ii) Stand still and wave your arms, as if you’re conducting an orchestra. An accurate pedometer will not record any steps.
2 Cover and safety strap A hard cover protects the face of the device if it falls off. The safety strap keeps it from falling if it becomes unclipped.
3 Talking feature If you find it difficult to read or manage your pedometer, consider one with an audio feature that will announce your step count at 1,000-step milestones or at the touch of a button.
How to choose a good pedometer app If you have a cellphone, look at the free pedometer apps available. Do the 20-step test (see above) to check them for accuracy, and explore their features. Some will map your route as you move about town, and track distance, elevation and speed. Also, determine if the app counts steps when your phone is in sleep mode, if it requires GPS and how much battery power it draws.
Every step counts, indoors and outdoors Consciously adding extra bits of exercise—by taking the stairs instead of the elevator, walking over to a colleague’s desk instead of emailing, and pacing during phone calls and television commercials—can significantly boost your day’s step total. And, of course, remember that the indoor steps you take while vacuuming, climbing stairs, and moving about the kitchen as you cook all count as well.
“Wearing a pedometer for the first time was a real eye-opener,” says Mike Mather. He was introduced to the handy step-counting device, which clips to your waistband, two years ago at his diabetes education exercise class.
“Many people in the class didn’t realize how few steps they took in a day, especially if they had desk jobs,” says the 65-year-old travel agency owner from Deep Brook, N.S., who was diagnosed with diabetes seven years ago.
As part of the exercise program, his class took on the challenge of travelling all the way around Nova Scotia—on paper, that is! They combined their daily step totals, and were thrilled to successfully complete the 2,500-kilometre journey over the eight-week program.
Mr. Mather and his wife, Diane, challenged themselves to walk an impressive 10,000 steps per day during the program. “If at the end of the day one of us was 3,000 steps short, it motivated us to go for a walk that evening. I hate to lose!” he says.
Monitoring his steps became part of Mr. Mather’s daily routine, and even after the program was completed, he continued wearing his pedometer each morning.
The benefits of pedometers “They work so well because they give instantaneous feedback, the same way video games do,” says Dr. James Mandigo, associate professor of physical education and kinesiology at Brock University in St. Catharines, Ont. “You always know how you’re doing, and this builds your confidence.”
While experts often cite 10,000 steps per day as an ideal target, this may be too ambitious a goal for people who are just getting started with activity, says Joanne Lewis, healthy eating and nutrition programming director for Diabetes Canada. (The average Canadian walks an estimated 3,000 to 4,000 steps per day.) Instead, she suggests that you determine your current walking activity level and then gradually increase it over time.
“Start by monitoring how many steps you take on an average day, then if you’re able to, add 500 per day until you eventually reach 10,000,” she says. “It may take a while, but in the meantime you’ll be more physically active than you were in the past!”
More good news When it comes to the benefits of walking, it’s unanimous. “Research shows that walking can improve fitness levels, blood sugar control, A1C levels, cholesterol values and body weight,” says Dr. Paul Oh, a scientist and medical director of the Cardiac Rehabilitation and Secondary Prevention Program at the Toronto Rehabilitation Institute. He notes that a collection of studies have shown that, on average, people who wear pedometers take 2,000 more steps per day than people who don’t. Additional studies show that pedometer-wearers walk faster and more frequently, and are more likely to stick with a walking program, than those who don’t use one.

The clinic is located in Nepean and offers extended evening hours and Saturday service along with free parking and easy transit access for the patient’s convenience. Patients on any given day might include babies with club feet or wry neck, people of any age with sports injuries or repetitive strain injuries, car accident victims, new mothers, rheumatoid arthritis sufferers, and Parkinson’s disease patients among others. In addition to physiotherapy treatments the clinic hosts information seminars that take place around the community to bring awareness to the public of matters relating to their health and physical care.
The clinic provides a complete service from examinations to providing education about the condition and options for treatment. New patients begin with a thorough examination to study the problem in detail and to answer any questions. The patient and therapist work together to ensure the treatment is effective, either in manual therapy in the clinic or in instructions about exercises to be done at home. As Gunjan explains, “Patients are educated on how they can help themselves to heal. They are responsible for their own health, and they feel the success in their own treatment.” Those with multiple issues are treated holistically so that all their concerns are dealt with together.
Arthritis patients can benefit from physiotherapy to improve mobility and restore use of the affected joints by increasing strength and support. Physiotherapists can advise about proper posture and movement to reduce pain and increase function, and strategies for maintaining daily activities. Sometimes assistive devices may be required, or modifications to the environment such as ergonomic furniture. The treatment plan often includes exercises that can be done at home to gradually improve strength and coordination.
The loss of urine during exertion, such as when coughing, jumping, or laughing, is symptomatic of female urinary incontinence and can affect both men and women. Physiotherapy can help to strengthen the pelvic muscles and calm the bladder, and teach the patient to manage incontinence if lifestyle changes are needed. Physiocare Physiotherapy & Rehab Centre also provides therapy for low back or pelvic pain, prolapse, and pelvic floor muscle weakness.
Patients are educated on how they can help themselves to heal. They are responsible for their own health, and they feel the success in their own treatment.
Muscle and joint injuries can occur to anyone, and are especially common in athletes. Injuries can happen due to trauma or to overuse. Physiotherapy treats the injury either manually or through devices such as braces or splints. The patient is educated about the injury and how to prevent it from recurring. Deep Oscillation Therapy is one treatment option for muscle and joint pain. Deep Oscillation uses electrostatic waves that penetrate deeper than manual therapy to reduce swelling and restore circulation and flexibility for quicker healing.
Vestibular (inner ear) Rehabilitation is available for vestibular problems that can include dizziness or balance problems. Vestibular disorders can impact a person’s life and cause them to avoid movements or situations that might bring on the problem. A proper diagnosis is important before determining the type of therapy that will be needed.

Concussions can occur at any time and are common in accidents or sports injuries, and can cause lasting damage to the tissue or the chemical balance of the brain. Physiocare Physiotherapy & Rehab Centre has therapists that are certified in concussion rehabilitation to assess the extent of injury and help treat the symptoms. Treatment needs to be personalized to the individual as concussions differ in symptoms among patients. Sometimes treatment is centred on the vestibular system; or if head or neck pain is present then treatment will focus on pain relief.
Pain in the face or neck that is caused by TMJ (temporomandibular joint) disorder can be treated either manually or through IMS (intramuscular stimulation). TMJ is caused by problems in the jaw and surrounding muscles that control chewing and jaw movement. Treatments involve relaxing the jaw muscles to relieve pain and allow for normal function.
Parkinson’s disease, multiple sclerosis, stroke, head injuries, and spinal cord injuries are a few of the conditions that can cause damage to the central nervous system with the result of reduced movement and coordination, weakness, and tremors. Neurological Rehabilitation by a physiotherapist involves exercises designed to improve the symptoms and give the patient better function.
Phototherapy is available for certain skin conditions like psoriasis, Atopic Dermatitis (eczema), Vitilago and psychological counselling is offered either on its own or together with physiotherapy if it will help the treatment regimen. If you’re not overjoyed by oranges or elated by eggplant, you’re not alone. According to Statistics Canada, just 40 percent of Canadians consume at least five servings of fruit and vegetables daily (the recommended minimum for adults is seven servings!).
Relatively low in calories, vegetables and fruit are filling and high in fibre, vitamins and minerals. Plus, a diet that’s rich in vegetables and fruits may help reduce your risk of heart disease and stroke.
For optimal health, your goal is to fill half your plate with vegetables or fruit at each meal. But let’s start small and look at the barriers that may be keeping you from enjoying all the benefits of vegetables and fruit.
If you just don’t like ‘em?
Sometimes an aversion may be due to childhood memories of being forced to eat vegetables you disliked. In other cases, people are turned off because they’ve only eaten overcooked or mushy veg. A properly prepared vegetable can be a game changer!
About 25 per cent of people are “supertasters,” which means that they have strong taste receptors for bitter flavours,
so mild foods like broccoli taste unpleasant. Here are some suggestions to boost your vegetable intake, even for the harshest critics:
• Pair with foods you already like: Start by adding a slice of tomato to a beloved hamburger or mushrooms into an omelette.
• Play with texture: If you hate mushy vegetables, try raw, shredded, roasted or stir-fried versions instead. Love crunchy foods? Try baked kale or beet “chips.”
• Enjoy more soups: If the texture of both raw AND cooked vegetables is not your thing, puree them instead. Prepare blended soups or smoothies to increase vegetable and fruit consumption.
• Add spectacular flavor: A little olive oil and garlic, a drizzle of balsamic vinegar, a squeeze of lemon, or a handful of fresh herbs can add excitement to veggies.
And if you have no time?
If lack of time or inconvenience is keeping you from eating more vegetables and fruit, try these strategies:
• Add to breakfast: Start the day off right with avocado on toast, berries on cereal, or broccoli in an omelette.
• Enjoy more salads: If you’re dining out, salads are on almost every menu. When eating in, use pre-washed greens so convenience is not a barrier. Easy win.
• Plan in advance: Spare an hour each week to cut carrots, celery and sweet peppers and store them in the fridge for easy snacking and meal prep.
• Double up: Cooked vegetables last three or four days in the fridge, so cook extra and enjoy the leftovers for lunch.
• Grab and go: Cherry tomatoes and snap peas make great snacks, as do apples, bananas or oranges.
• Use the freezer: Frozen vegetables are as nutritious as fresh ones, and don’t wilt in the produce bin! Keep a supply of frozen broccoli, peas, leafy greens and stir-fry mixes on-hand for simple meals.
With an abundance of vegetables and fruits to choose from and many ways to prepare them, you’re bound to find something you love!

You have probably heard a lot about the effect diabetes can have on your eyes and feet if it is left untreated or not managed properly. Did you know the disease can also affect your teeth, gums, and other parts of
your mouth? Here is what you need to know and do in order to preserve your teeth and the structures that support them.
HOW DOES DIABETES AFFECT MY ORAL HEALTH?“The mouth contains an abundance of small blood vessels, which can be affected by diabetes,” says Dr. Gerald Smith, president of the Ontario Dental Association. It is no surprise, says Smith, that “poorly controlled diabetes can cause several oral health problems.” These include:
Tooth decay (cavities) The sticky substance that forms on your teeth, called plaque, contains many bacteria. They combine with sugars and starches in your mouth to form acids that gradually destroy your teeth and result in cavities. The higher your blood glucose (sugar) levels, the greater the supply of sugars—and the greater the risk of tooth decay. High glucose levels in your saliva may also help bacteria thrive.
Gingivitis (inflammation of the gums) If plaque builds up over time, it hardens into calcium deposits that can cause your gums to become inflamed, or swollen.

WHAT ARE THE SIGNS OF DENTAL DISEASE?Sore, swollen, and red gums that bleed when you brush your teeth are signs of gingivitis. If your gums have shrunk or pulled away from your teeth, you could have periodontitis. Report any suspicious signs—such as bleeding, sore or swollen gums, mouth pain, or loose teeth—to a dental professional.
WHAT CAN I DO TO PRESERVE MY ORAL HEALTH?Work with your health-care team to get your blood glucose under control. At the same time, Smith recommends maintaining a consistent oral hygiene routine that includes:
• brushing your teeth at least twice a day • using a toothpaste that contains fluoride • flossing at least once a day• following a healthy diet
While limiting sweets is always a good idea, it will not necessarily prevent cavities: “Food particles left between your teeth will break down and become acidic, even if they’re not sugary,” says Carolyn Gall Casey, education director for the Canadian Diabetes Association (CDA).
Periodontitis (gum disease) Left untreated, gingivitis can spread to the underlying bone and cause gum disease. Because diabetes lowers a person’s ability to fight infection and slows down healing, gum disease tends to be more severe in people with the disease. In fact, “the sudden unexplained appearance of gum disease, or gum disease that doesn’t respond well to treatment, may offer the first clue that a person has diabetes,” says Smith, who practises dentistry in Thunder Bay, Ont.
Dry mouth High blood glucose levels can decrease the flow of saliva in your mouth, which increases the risk of tooth decay and gum disease. Improving your blood glucose control can lead to an improvement in salivary flow.
Yeast infection (thrush) and other oral infections “People with diabetes have a lower resistance to infection and a longer healing process, so they’re prone to a lot of infections,” says Smith. Excess sugar in the saliva— a result of poorly controlled diabetes—can lead to a buildup of a fungus called Candida albicans and cause
thrush. Watch for creamy white patches on your tongue or inner cheeks. The infection may also spread to other parts of your mouth or throat.
CAN DIABETES MEDICATIONS AFFECT MY ORAL HEALTH?In general, diabetes medications do not cause problems with your teeth or gums. A possible exception is the class of glucose-lowering medications called thiazolidinediones, which includes pioglitazone (Actos) and rosiglitazone (Avandia). In a small minority of patients, these drugs may cause tooth pain or discomfort.
DOES DENTAL DISEASE AFFECT MY BLOOD SUGAR?“Infections in general can affect blood glucose levels,” says Smith. Gum disease causes your immune system to release molecules that trigger swelling. This makes blood glucose more difficult to control.

“That’s why brushing and flossing your teeth regularly are so important.” Regular dental checkups, including plaque removal, are a must. “Your dentist can tell you how often you need to visit,” says Smith, adding that “I have some patients with diabetes whose oral health is managed very well with visits twice a year, while others may require visits every three months.” If you already have gum disease, you will need to visit your dentist more often. If you smoke, here is one more reason to quit: The risk of developing thrush and gum disease is higher in smokers with diabetes than in non-smokers. Smoking also seems to affect blood flow to the gums, which may slow down wound healing in this area.

Avoiding exercise? It’s likely not for lack of discipline, science suggests. In fact, you might want to cut yourself some slack.
One of the most common mistakes people make, when they’re first getting active, is thinking of exercise in rigid terms. It has to happen in a gym. A treadmill might be involved. You should break a sweat. Repeat.
But it’s that rigidity that can set us up for disappointment, says Dr. Todd Duhamel, Heart & Stroke researcher and principal investigator at the Institute of Cardiovascular Sciences at St. Boniface Hospital in Winnipeg.
Dr. Duhamel has spent part of his career studying behaviour change and what keeps us from getting the physical activity we need to reduce our risk of heart disease, stroke and other diseases. His most recent study looks for strategies that can help employees sit less and move more. Nearly all of the employees recruited to participate in the ENCOURAGE project saw an uptick in their physical activity, with more than half (54%) logging 150 minutes a week.
That’s a lot more than the average Canadian, who accumulates 25 minutes (rather than the recommended 150 minutes) of moderate to vigorous physical activity a week.
Surprisingly, getting people to add physical activity into their daily routines didn’t require them to make a big lifestyle change.
“It’s about really identifying why people connect to physical activity,” Dr. Duhamel stresses. If it’s important to you, if you can schedule it into your day; it’s easier to stick with it.
Changing minds, changing habits
A big part of the ENCOURAGE project focused on shifting people’s idea of what it means to be physically active. For sedentary employees, that meant finding small ways to build activity into their day, like taking the stairs and setting reminders to get up from their desk.
“Sedentary time is not opposite of exercise; it’s actually its own risk factor,” says Dr. Duhamel. “And there’s emerging evidence that standing up every hour will make you healthier. If you can get that higher intensity exercise, that’s a bonus and where we need to aspire to.” But, he says, it’s important to start with the most sedentary people, getting them to add even a little movement to their days.
Study participants received guidance from a kinesiologist to identify the types of activities they enjoyed, as well as referrals to local community programs near their home or workplace that offered a program at the right intensity.
The next phase of the ENCOURAGE project will use technology to help more Canadians find ways to get active when they have no time. The app Dr. Duhamel and his team are planning to release in early 2017 will encourage you to pick an action, like standing up from your chair, and complete it within the hour.
What if you don’t like to exercise at all? Perfectly normal, says Dr. Duhamel.
“Myself, I hate exercising. But I really like doing something for a purpose. I’ll go outside and work for eight hours a day working at my cottage because I like doing that. There’s a purpose to it. But I won’t go run on a treadmill.”
He stresses that gyms and structured exercise programs aren’t the only ways to add physical activity to your day. For example, in Indigenous cultures, there are plenty of land-based activities that increase physical activity. You just move because you’re out in the environment. It’s natural.
So, if spending time with your family is important, can you look for ways to build activity, like a trip to the park, into your time together? It’s an improvement over sitting on a couch watching TV together. “The reality is it’s more risky to sit on the couch than it is to go to any exercise program, generally.”
Before you start
Think about why you want to be active, Dr. Duhamel recommends. Then, think about why you enjoy it. Write that down on a piece of paper and keep coming back to it.
It’s easy to lose sight of why we’re doing something. We tend to focus on the activity way more than why we’re actually doing it.
If your purpose is to have fun or be healthier so you can spend time with your kids, just stopping and thinking about that for a moment is proven to have some effect on our physical behaviour. It reminds you what’s important. From there, you have a clearer path to the activity that’s right for you.
