PLAYFUL CITY USAI am proud to announce Costa Mesa is now considered a Playful City USA community. Becoming a Playful City means as a community we strive to provide our children with the childhood they deserve with as many opportunities for them to play as possible. We have made parks, fi elds, playgrounds, basketball courts, pools, gyms, classes and so on available for our children to jump, run, skip, slide, play and thrive.

According to Playful City USA, this generation of children play less than all previous generations; only one in four children get the recommended 60 minutes of physical activity or active play every day which has led to the increase of childhood obesity, behavioral and cognitive disorders, depression and anxiety disorders. It is believed and hoped that giving children the chance to play more will be the solution to this growing problem. The Children who play regularly often do better in school, have higher self-esteem, develop team player attributes and grow into more creative and innovative thinkers. As said on the Playful City USA website, “Kids who play are happier, smarter and more social creatures who stand a stronger chance of developing into happy, healthy, smart, successful adults than kids who do not.”

Becoming a Playful City opens new opportunities for our youth to play more. Our youth are the future of Costa Mesa and the future of our entire world; let’s continue giving them every chance to learn to love being outside, being healthy, being talkative and being playful.

There are countless classes, activities, camps and special events noted throughout this Recreation Guide for our children to participate in and be part of which will lead to more play. There are also lots of classes targeted for adults and seniors for them to also be able to play, move and become more active.

So as a community, let’s go outside and play!Kim Pederson, Chairman

Wetlands1298 Victoria St., | Costa Mesa | 7 a.m. – Sunset

An Orange County park open year round, the Talbert Nature Preserve has nearly 2,000 acres of scenic landscape, perfect for Costa Mesa locals and visitors that want to get outside. A great spot for hiking, biking, jogging or even just walking the dog (yes, the preserve is dog friendly!), the preserve acts as a botanical garden, wildlife refuge and exceptional recreational facility all at once. Picnic tables at the end of the base of a trail from Fairview Park is where you’ll likely fi nd Costa Mesa locals spending time on the weekends.

Talbert Nature Preserve is located on Victoria Street in Costa Mesa between Pacifi c Avenue and the Santa Ana River. The Talbert Nature Preserve is divided into two sections; the North Talbert Preserve is roughly 91.5 acres and the South Talbert Preserve is approximately 88.5 acres.

With nine diff erent trails stretching over nearly 3 miles (6 miles round trip); the Talbert Nature Preserve is one of few open space areas left in Central Orange County. With only 100 feet in elevation, the Talbert’s trails are great for beginner hikers or families with younger children. Hikers can continue through the Nature Center to reach the Santa Ana River Bicycle Trail, which continues on to the Pacifi c Ocean and nearby Newport Beach. Wildlife in the preserve consists mostly of birds, including great, snowy egrets and mallard ducks. You might also see small animals like squirrels and rabbits – and beware of coyote visits at night.
