NEWCASTLE STRANGLE FIRST WIN OF THE SEASONNewcastle,NSW | The Newcastle Hunters have recorded their first win of the season but it took to the final second to secure what for the most part was an ugly victory. “We did what we had to do. If its ugly it sure beats losing” said Coach Laurie Frier after the game.

The Hunters built the win on their stingy defence which allowed just 84 yards on the ground and 133 through the air. They forced Perth into 9 punts a situation that John Simon says he team was ready for. “We knew it would be a grind. We knew it would be won in the 4th quarter. I thought we were the better team but the Hunters just lock you in and get you to play their way. We are al disappointed because this is what we thought would happen and it did”.

Newcastle kicked three field goals for the win, one in the first quarter and two in the 4th. Perth got the games only touchdown when Jarrod Crawford cut back underneath Scott Tala for the 9 yard score.

The final statistics told a surpassing story and showed just how good the Hunters are at keeping teams out of the end zone. Not only did Perth score the only touchdown but they also won the turnover count 0-2 with Luke Ogden giving up both via interceptions. Yet each time the Cougars did nothing with the ball as Newcastle’s defence stiffened and forced three and outs.

Newcastle have now not scored a touchdown in two straight games, a situation that was not uncommon last season. Whilst the Hunters were victorious and Coach Frier will not have it any other way, Newcastle are going to have to push the envelope more if they are to return to finals football this year. Perth meanwhile are playing good football but as is often the case with teams that have been towards the bottom for some time, they simply have forgotten how to win.
