USF’s “lightning fast” offenseDuring 2015, USF’s spread offense was a quick-strike offense. In 2016, USF is continuing that fast break offense. In a week one win over SCSU, USF had six TDs with drives taking three minutes or less. Of that six TDs, five came in two minutes or less and two in under a minute. Against MSUM, five of the six scoring drives were under three minutes, includ-ing two in less than 20 seconds. USF added three more scoring drives in

three minutes or less against Minot State. Against Bemidji State, the Cou-gars scored 34 points in the third quarter, including three TDs in 6:27 to open the second half. All five TDs by USF were scored in less than three minutes of drive time with two under a minute vs. BSU.This year USF has produced seven TDs in 40 seconds or less. In 19 of the 23 TD drives, USF has taken less than three minutes. A year ago, USF had 44 TD drives of three minutes or less drive time with 33 in under two minutes and 16 in one minute or less. In the past two years years USF has had 104 TD drives in three minutes or less. In the past two seasons, USF has 23 scoring driving in under one minute and 45 in under two minutes of time.

Overall, including play at Howard Wood Field (through 2006), the Cougars have won 76 of the past 81 games and 66-of-70 home confer-ence games, including 47 in the GPAC (NAIA) and 20 (20-4) as an NSIC member in NCAA DII. Since 2000, USF is 94-10 at home.

By the numbers under StugartUSF is 54-3 when leading at halftime in the Coach Stugart era. They are 2-11 when trailing at halftime and 1-2 when tied at halftime. USF is 45-5 when scoring first and when opponents score first, the Cougars stand 15-11.

Scoring streak hits 129 gamesSince moving to DII in 2011, the Cougars have scored 2,141 points in 59 games or 36.37 ppg. In 2016, USF is averaging 42.5 points per game. It has been 129 games since USF has failed to score, which was a 55-0 loss to Carroll College in the final game of the 2005 season. USF had a DII-best 73 points vs. Minnesota State-Moorhead (Sept. 27) in 2014. The previous high was in 2011 when the Cougars defeated the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology, 71-0.

Cougars are 65-0 all-time when scoring 50When the Cougars reach 50 points, they are 65-0 all-time and 25-0 when scoring over 60 points. They are 7-0 all-time when breaking the 70-point mark. When the Cougars have scored over 40, USF has a 154-1 mark, including 24-1 in DII. When scoring over 30 points, USF is 228-8. The only time USF has lost when scoring over 40 points was a 45-40 setback to Winona State on Oct. 12, 2013 at Bob Young Field.

Offense lighting it upWith 1,153 points in the past 28 games (start of 2014 season), USF is av-eraging 41.1. In the past 28 games, the Cougars have scored 156 TDs or 5.6 per game. USF has averaged more than six yards a play in 16 of the last 21 games. With 585 yards on 64 plays, against SCSU on Sept. 1, the Cougars averaged 9.1 yards per play, which is its best mark at the NCAA DII level and the best since averaging 11.4 yards per play (638 yards on 56 plays) in a 66-13 win over Doane College on Sept. 18, 2010. With 636 yards vs. then #22 Bemidji State, USF has had 600 yards or more in offense twice this season and 10 times in the Jed Stugart era (since 2010).

Max Mickey producing big in the backfieldJunior running back Max Mickey has had a big start in his junior season at USF. The standout from Holden, Mo., ranks first NCAA DII in rush-ing yards per carry at 12.97 and ranks second in rushing yards per game at 161.5 per game while sitting second third rushing yards with 646 (51 carries). He is part of a backfield and an offense that leads the NSIC and ranks second nationally in rushing yards at 380.2 per game. The Cou-gars have rushed for 343 yards (SCSU), 444 yards (MSUM), 328 (Minot State) and 406 (Bemidji State) this season. Mickey had 13 carries for 178 yards and a TD in the win over SCSU and then produced 15 carries for 185 yards against MSUM before totaling 77 vs. Minot State on just nine carries and a career best 207 yards on 14 carries with a career-best 75-yard TD run against BSU on Sept. 24.. Interestingly he has done it off the bench as senior Justin Fulks has started with Mickey entering in the second or third offensive series. Fulks (103 vs. SCSU) and Mickey (178)

both had 100-yard rushing games against SCSU on the road. Mickey (185) and Luke Papilion (149) busted out for 100-yard rushing games against MSUM. Papilion added 101 yards rushing on Sept. 17 week vs. Minot State. Against BSU Mickey had 207 yards, the most by a USF rusher since Nephi Garcia rumbled for 225 in the snow against Wayne State on Nov. 15, 2014, and Papilion had 163 yards on 17 carries with a 46 yard TD run. So, USF, which had just five 100-yard rushing games all last year, already has surpassed that with seven through four games this year. Mickey now has 276 carries for 1,665 yards rushing. Mickey, who now has seven career 100-yard rushing games, has scored 16 career TDs, including three this year. He already has 30-yards more (646-to-616) than he had a year ago.Senior Justin Fulks, who earned the start in the opener, has two 100-yard rushing games at USF, has 36 carries for 268 yards and a TD. He now has 162 carries for 830 yards and five TDs USF. Fulks, who has been on a playoff team three straight years (twice with Northwest Missouri State, who won a national title his freshman year), has 199 carries for 1,033 yards and six TDs in his time at USF and NMSU.

Angulo, Harman named NSIC Players of the WeekAfter playing key roles for #12 USF in a come-from-behind 37-36 home win over then #22 Bemidji State (3-1), senior wide receiver Josh Angulo and junior safety Jeffrey Harman were named the NSIC Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week. Angulo, a 6-0, 209 pound senior wide receiver from Sioux Falls (Roosevelt HS), had his best performance with the Cougars, hauling in 15 passes for 164 yards and three TDs. Angulo’s 15 receptions was a career best and also tied the USF game record by former NAIA All-American wide receiver Kalen DeBoer, who had 15 catches in a win over Nebraska-Wesleyan on Nov. 2, 1996. Harman, a 5-11, 203 pound junior safety from Redlands, Calif., had his best game as a USF player in earning his first ever NSIC Defensive Player of the Week honor. Harman came off the bench to record two inter-ceptions and record four tackles in USF’s win over BSU.Harman, who has 10 tackles, two interceptions and two passes defended this season, intercepted BSU’s Jordan Hein with 9:54 to play in the second quarter as BSU was driving deep in USF terri-tory. Then, he added a second pick with 12:28 to play in the fourth quarter on a third and 14.

Rushing Attack best ever at DII level through four gamesThis year, the Cougars’ ground game has played a huge role in the team’s 4-0 start. USF is averaging 380.2 yards per game on the ground, which ranks first in the NSIC and second nationally. USF has had seven individual games of 100 yards or more in a game, which gives USF 32 since moving to DII in 2011. Through four games, USF has 168 carries for 1,521 yards and a 9.05 average. The total is the best at the DII era and best dating back to 1990. In fact, USF’s total for four games this season betters any season except 2013 when the Cougars had1,531 rushing yards after five games (1,107 after four games). The top three totals after four games in the past 26 years is

the third consecutive year, a first at USF. Both Tidwell and St. Pierre were invited to NFL training camps with Tidwell being signed to

a free agent contract by the Denver Broncos.

In NSIC stats, USF were ranked in the top-5 in 26 individual or team categories, in-cluding lead the league in both sacks (39) and sacks allowed (5). Nationally, USF was in the top 50 in 46 stat categories; 27 in the

top 20 and 12 in the top 10. The Cougars led the nation by allowing just five sacks all season. QB Luke Papilion was the total offense leader for the second straight year in the NSIC. He ranked 10th nationally. Solomon St. Pierre led the league with nine interceptions and ranked fifth nationally. St. Pierre also established an NSIC record with 22 career interceptions.

In 2014, USF opened the season with eight straight wins (most at DII level) and lost only to national runner-up Minnesota State. The Cougars finished the season with three straight wins. Among the regular season victories was a third consecutive win over city rival Augustana (23-13) at Kirkeby-Over Stadium as the “Key to the City” stayed at USF.

In total, 14 USF players were named to the NSIC All-League team, including eight first (4) or second (4) team honorees. Sophomore quar-terback Luke Papilion was named the school’s first-ever NSIC Offensive Player of the Year and a Harlon Hill candidate (DII Player of the Year). Junior defensive back Solomon St. Pierre was named all-league, a Cliff Harris Award candidate (DII Player of the Year) and to six All-American first teams (AFCA, D2football.com, AP Little All-American Team, Da-ktronics, BeyondSports.com, Don Hansen). Junior defensive back John Tidwell was all-league, all-region (Daktronics) and selected Academic All-District as well as a Don Hansen honorable mention All-American. USF also had 23 Academic All-NSIC selections in 2014.

In 2014, the Cougars were the top scoring team (42.7) in the NSIC and seventh nationally. USF scored 512 points, the most since moving to DII. In addition, USF was second in scoring defense (17.4 ppg), second in total offense (483.2) and third in total defense (356.8). USF ranked fourth nationally (1st, NSIC) in the national in turnover margin, third in turnovers gained, and second nationally with 26 interceptions. USF had a nation-leading seven defensive TDs. In national rankings, the Cougars were 12th in scoring defense and 17th in total offense.

In 2013, Stugart guided USF to an overall mark of 6-5 with a sec-ond-straight win over its city rival Augustana College. USF capped the 2013 season by defeating Wayne State College in its season finale by a convincing 35-10 margin.

Two Cougars were named to the All-NSIC South First Team and a total of nine players received all-conference recognition. One Cougar took home an individual award, as junior John Batinich was named the NSIC

Defensive Newcomer of the Year, while senior Carrington Hanna became the first player in the history of the NSIC (records dating to 1973) to be se-lected as both an all-conference wide receiver and all-conference quarter-back in the same year. In addition, NSIC South first team John Tidwell was also named to the 2013 Don Hansen Football Committee released their All-Super Region 3 Team (Third Team Defense). A total of 19 student-ath-letes received Academic All-NSIC honors.

USF made its Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference debut on August 30, 2012, and the Cougars announced their presence with authority with a 32-19 road upset of No. 16 St. Cloud State. The Cougars opened the 2012 campaign with five straight victories and finished 9-2 overall to secure their 19th straight winning season and fourth place in the 16-team NSIC. USF claimed a 32-31 double-overtime victory over crosstown rival and new conference foe Augustana College on Oct. 20 in the inaugural “Key to the City” game. The matchup was the first between the two programs in 26 years and it marked the Cougars’ first-ever victory against the Vikings. USF was ranked No. 22 at the conclusion of the season and enjoyed six weeks in the NCAA D-II top 25 poll, including a season-best No. 17 ranking the week of Oct. 27-Nov. 3.

Stugart and his staff assembled the No. 1 pass efficiency defense in the NSIC while the Cougar defense ranked among the NCAA D-II top 30 in five categories: rushing defense (29th at 121.36), pass efficiency defense (20th at 107.22), scoring defense (24th at 20.18), turnover margin (9th at 1.27) and tackles for loss (30th at 7.55). In addition, senior cornerback Robert Virgil tied for fifth in the nation with an average of 0.64 intercep-tions per game while classmate Nick Bonte ranked 23rd in tackles for loss (1.59).

Senior kicker Braden Wieking ended his storied career as the school’s career field goals leader (52). A Don Hansen NCAA Division II All-Amer-ican, Wieking twice earned NSIC Special Teams Player of the Week honors this season and posted the league’s best overall field goal percentage, at .842 (16-for-19).

The Cougars placed three players on the All-NSIC South Division First Team in 2012, including senior wide receiver Jeremiah Oates, who snared a league-best 12 touchdown catches. Junior Carrington Hanna, who was tops in the NSIC in both receptions (69, 6.27 per game) and yards per catch (13), earned a second team nod.

Hanna was also named to the 2012 Capital One Academic All-America® NCAA Division II Football Second Team, becoming the first USF stu-dent-athlete to be selected to the Academic All-American Team by CoSI-DA. A total of 18 student-athletes received Academic All-NSIC honors.and 13 Cougars received All-NSIC recognition.

The national recognition wasn’t limited to the players, as Stugart was one of five D-II finalists for the 2012 Liberty Mutual Coach of the Year Award, the premier college football-coaching honor that promotes charity and scholarship while also honoring coaches for their sportsmanship, integrity, responsibility and excellence, on and off the field.

In 2011, USF’s 29-10 victory over Minot State insured that the program would finish its NCAA D-II provisional campaign with a 5-4 mark for its 18th winning season in a row. Even though the squad was ineligible to compete for a conference championship or postseason berth, the Cougars tallied several memorable moments and learned firsthand what it takes to compete and win at the NCAA D-II level. Under Stugart’s guidance, the Cougars proved not only that they could compete at the D-II level, but they could put a scare into NCAA Division I opponents. The Cougars put forth a valiant effort on the road in a 31-17 loss to FCS No. 23-ranked McNeese State University. After starting the 2011 campaign 0-3, the Cougars rolled off five straight victories and concluded the season with a heartbreaking 15-13 near-upset loss at then FCS No. 25 University of North Dakota. All four of USF’s 2011 losses came against nationally ranked NCAA DI FCS and NCAA DII programs.

In his first season at USF, Stugart led the Cougars to a 13-1 record, fifth straight Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) crown and fifth con-secutive appearance in the NAIA National Championship Game.Stugart

coached his first game for the Cougars on September 4, 2010, a 41-24 vic-tory at No. 23 Northwestern College. The Cougars trailed their longtime rival 14-10 at the half, but outscored the Red Raiders 31-10 in the second half to secure the victory. USF ran the table in the GPAC and capped off a 10-0 regular season with a 44-7 win over Concordia University (Neb.) to capture its fifth straight (ninth overall) GPAC championship.

The Cougars stormed through their first two playoff contests, a 33-14 win over No. 16 Northwestern Oklahoma State University and a 27-7 victory against No. 12 McKendree University. The wins advanced the Cougars to a semifinal matchup versus No. 4 MidAmerica Nazarene University. The game was a homecoming of sorts for Stugart; he had previously served as the Pioneers’ head coach from 2006-08. USF shutout MNU 38-0, thereby extending the nation’s longest winning streak to 42 games and clinching the Cougar’s fifth straight trip to the NAIA national title game in Rome, Ga.

USF came up just short in the championship game, falling 10-7 in a defensive struggle to No. 2 Carroll College. Cougar linebacker Eric Anderson recorded 17 tackles and was honored as the game’s defensive player of the game for his standout performance.

Several other USF football student-athletes collected hardware in 2010. Senior receiver Jon Ryan captured the program’s fourth NAIA Player of the Year award and was also named the 2010 GPAC Player of the Year. Ryan was one of 22 players to receive GPAC all-conference recognition, with six Cougars picking up first team accolades.

Prior to USF, Stugart served as the linebackers coach at the University of Nevada-Las Vegas (UNLV) and guided all three starting Rebel lineback-ers to top 20 finishes in total tackles in the conference.

UNLV just missed qualifying for a bowl with a 5-7 record in Mountain West Conference, one of the top mid-major conferences in the country at the NCAA Division?I-FBS level.

Before UNLV, Stugart spent three seasons as the head coach at MidAmer-ica Nazarene University (MNU), compiling a 26-7 record at the NAIA school located in Olathe, Kansas.

After leading the Pioneers to an undefeated regular season, a Heart of America Conference title and second consecutive trip to the playoffs, Stu-gart was named 2008 NAIA Region 3 Coach of the Year by the American Football Coaches Association.

Previous to MNU, he was on the staff at Northern Colorado from 1999-2006. Stugart was the defensive line coach before taking over the linebackers as defensive coordinator in 2003, the same year that the UNC defense ranked 16th in the nation in total defense and 13th in scoring defense. With the Bears he produced three defensive All-Americans and was part of two North Central Conference championship teams and two postseason appearances.

Stugart earned three letters as a linebacker at Azusa Pacific (Calif.) Uni-versity, where he later began his coaching career. He earned a bachelor’s degree in communications in 1994 from APU and a master’s degree in communications from UNC in 2003.

Stugart and his wife, Angie, have a son, Gunner, and a daughter, Gracie.

ances. The Cougars won their first ever league title (SDIC) in 1981 and had their first unbeaten regular season in 1988 when they also appeared in the playoffs for the first time. In 1995, USF won the pro-gram’s first playoff game. Look Back over the Years After that first game in 1902 USF did not play again until the 1911 season when they lost to Huron, 24-9. In 1915, the pro-gram tasted the winning feeling for the first time with a 41-0 win over Pipestone. In 1916, the program had the first winning season at 3-2-2. The Cougars recorded a 46-0 win over Augustana. Records suggest that USF hired T.R. Johnson in 1919 when the Cougars were 0-2. Later, USF hired another USD graduate in Frank Mc-Cormick, who led the program from 1924-27 (4-18, .182). Francis Olson, who is tied with Philip Tinsworth (6-45-1, .130, 1949-55) and Richard Sterup (20-40, .333, 1962-68), for the second longest tenure (seven years) at USF, had a 19-24-6 (.388) mark from 1928-34. The early years at USF were tough with just five .500 or better seasons in the first 30 years of the program. However, the 6-1-1 season in 1934, including a 108-to-35 scor-ing edge, was a standout season. In 1960, the Cougars, which included USF Hall of Fame members Bob Young and Reid Beier, were 6-2 with a 188-to-151 scoring margin. In 1966 and 1967, USF put together a 13-5 combined record (6-3, 7-2). Later in 1980, the Cou-gars began a six-year winning run of 38-18, including a 6-3-1 record in 1981 when the Cougars captured their first-ever league title, winning the SDIC. The 1981 produced the school’s first-ever league title as the Cougars won the SDIC with head coach Dave Schroeder. In a 9-1 campaign in 1982 USF held a 234-to-92 scoring edge but finished second in the SDIC, although they were ranked ninth in the NAIA poll as Dave Schroeder was named the District 12 Coach of the Year. Head Coach Bob Young took over 1984, directing the Cou-gars to its most successful period ever. In 22 seasons (1983-2004), Young let his teams to a 172-69-3 (.711) record and the school’s first NAIA championship in 1996 (47-25 win over Western Washington). In his first season in 1984, USF went 8-2 with an SDIC title and a 233-to-145 scoring edge. In 1988, USF had the school’s best season in history as they went 10-1 with a 14-9 playoff loss to Northwestern (Iowa) spoiling an un-defeated regular season. USF had a 278-to-115 scoring margin in that season as they reached the playoffs for the first time. They fin-ished ranked 8th in the final NAIA DII poll. It was the first time that USF had won 10 straight games and set 16 school records, including rushing offening 2,104 and 21 rushing TDs. Bob Booth was named the SDIC MVP, USF’s first league MVP. Bob Young was named Coach of the Year. Booth was the first defensive player to win the award since 1981.By 1994, the Cougars were ready to take a step up. After going 18-22

Since football started at the University of Sioux Falls in 1902, the Cougars have tasted success at both the NAIA and NCAA Division II level. During that period, USF has won NAIA league ti-tles and four times been crowned a national champion. The Cougars won NAIA national titles in 1996, 2006, 2008, and 2009. Since the move to NCAA DII in 2011, the Cougars have constructed a 44-15 record. In NSIC play, beginning in 2012, the Cougars are 38-10. Since moving to DII, the Cougars have finished third (9-2, 5-2, NSIC South, 2012), fourth (6-5, 4-3 NSIC South, 2013) and second (11-1, NSIC South, 2014) in the NSIC South. USF, which finished the season #21 in the AFCA poll and #17 in D2foot-ball.com was 9-3 and earned its first ever NCAA DII playoff berth. In 2016, the Cougars have moved from #23 in the AFCA poll to #12 and off to a 3-0 start. USF also has jumped to #12 in the D2Football.com poll. To this point, USF has won 19 league titles, had 101 All-Americans and 291 all-league players, including 13 in 2015 in the NSIC. In total USF has had 48 players recognized on the NSIC All-League team, including 13 in 2015, 14 in 2014, eight in 2013, and 13 in 2012. USF has had 12 players named first team, 21 to the second team and 15 honorable mention. John Tidwell became USF’s first 3-time first team All-NSIC selection in 2015, Former USF quarterback Kurtiss Riggs was inducted into the NAIA Hall of Fame in 2013. Riggs led USF to a two-year record of 25-1, setting NAIA records for TD passes in a season (55), and most attempts without an interception (290) during the 1996 season. He directed the Cougars to its first national title in 1996. In leading USF to a 14-0 record, Riggs set schools records in single season pass-ing yards with 3,993, completions, 265, and had single game passing marks in passing yards with 457, completions, 30 and TDs (9). He was a 1996 NAIA first team All-American. In the title game win over Western Washington, he threw for 455 yards and five TDs. Riggs, who accumulated 496 comple-tions in 801 attempts for 7,329 passing yards and 85 TDs in his career, was the third athlete from USF named to the NAIA Hall of Fame. USF punter Brian Hansen was inducted in 1995 and track and field standout Wally Diehl was inducted in 1968. Former head coach Bob Young, who was inducted into the NAIA Hall of Fame in 2010, has the most wins in school history with a 172-69-3 mark from 1983-2004. USF’s home field is named in Young’s honor. He was a two-time GPAC Coach of the Year (2002, 2003). Kalen DeBoer, who owns the school’s best all-time winning percentage at .957, was the GPAC Coach of the Year three times (2006, 2007, 2008) and named the AFCA/NAIA Coach of the Year in 2006, 2008 and 2009. He led USF to a 67-3 record and three national titles (2006, 2008, 2009). Four USF players were named NAIA National Players of the Year, including Nick Kortan in 2002, Chad Cavender in 2007, Lorenzo Brown in 2009 and Jon Ryan in 2010. Two former Cougars played in the NFL, including Rick Danmeier (1972-75) who was with the Minnesota Vikings from 1977-82. He ranks sixth on the Vikings all-time scoring list with 364 points. Punter Brian Hansen (1980-83) played with the Washington Redskins, New York Jets, Cleveland Browns, New England Patri-ots, and New Orleans Saints from 1984-99. He is the only player in school history to be drafted by the NFL as he was taken in the ninth round of the 1984 draft. He averaged 42.3 yards per punt in the NFL.
