Matt Cournoyer was born in Sacramento, California and is an Army veteran. He works as a hearing instrument specialist. Matt usually attends the 11:00 a.m. service. He found Augsburg when he was changing careers and used the ELCA website to find a congregation in Winston Salem. Matt feels that having a faith community is almost more important than having faith. He learned this while stationed overseas. Since then, Matt has maintained a connection with a faith community. Matt regularly attends Wingz Men’s Group. Matt has significant ties to the LMM in both the national and the NC levels. Men’s ministry is a passion for Matt and something he will continue in as time moves on.

Matt wanted to share that the Spirit moved someone to knock on his door and who would he be if he didn’t answer the Lord’s call.

Maria Fortin was born in Jamestown, New York. Maria and her daughter, Christina, joined Augsburg in June of 2016. They had visited several Lutheran churches after moving to North Carolina in 2005, but none really suited them. They settled in and joined Good Shepherd Moravian in Kernersville until they closed in 2015. She came to Augsburg seeking a church home. Maria usually attends the 11:00 a.m. service. Maria is a physician assistant at the Stokes County Health Department. Maria is married to John and has two children: Amy and Christina. Maria loves that Augsburg’s community really does do God’s work. “We are alive here.” Augsburg’s outreach is both tangible and spiritual and she is glad to be a small part in that. Maria is currently involved with the overflow shelter, is a communion assistant and a lay reader. In previous congregations, Maria has been a council member, an assisting minister, a lay reader and a member of choir, band and hand bell choir. She has also

served as a member of the Worship and Music committees. Maria is honored to be nominated for council.

Scott Hanes was born in Lexington, NC. Scott is married to Julie and they have two children: Cory and Emma. Scott works at Bermuda Village Retirement Community. Scott found Augsburg while Julie and he were dating and looking for a new church. Scott loves Augsburg’s traditions; its breadth of worship opportunities, and the friendship and support of the congregation. Scott is currently serving on the Finance Committee. Previously he has served as a church treasurer, on church Council, on the 2015 Special Review Committee, personnel committee, finance committee, and investments committee and played on both the men’s and coed softball teams. He has attended the Wingz men’s group. Scott usually attends the 11:00 a.m. service.

John Norris found his way to Augsburg through his relationship with his wife, Emily. John equally attends both the 8:30 and 11:00 a.m. worship services. John loves the welcoming and supportive community that he has found at Augsburg. He also appreciates the ways Augsburg is active in serving the community. John was born in Winston Salem, and he is employed as a Property Manager. John currently participates in the adult handbell choir and also volunteers for the overflow shelter. John was previously a member of the worship and music committee.

Dana Cannin-Mulhearn was born in Evanston, Illinois. She is married to Robert and they have two children: Leon and Rory. The Mulhearn’s typically attend the 8:30 a.m. worship service. Dana is a Speech-Language Pathologist. Dana found Augsburg when she and Robert first moved to the Winston Salem area. Dana grew up in the Lutheran Church and Robert was raised Catholic. They had visited a few of both denominations and none felt like the right fit. Dana’s cousin came to visit from out of state and they drove around the downtown area to give him a tour. During that tour, they happened to drive by Augsburg. She and Robert attended service that following Sunday and were pleased with the welcome they received by so many, including Pastor Rinn. Each Sunday, Pastor Rinn remembered their names and was happy to see them. That, and other people and events, gave them the feeling of being home and they continued to attend, eventually becoming members. There are many things that Dana loves about Augsburg. First, Augsburg reminds her of her childhood church (Christ Our Shepherd, Peachtree City,

Georgia) in regard to the similarities in worship, fellowship and activities. Feeling familiar, comfortable and at home in church is exceptional. Second, Dana loves what Augsburg does and gives to the community and its emphasis on serving. It unites us as brothers and sisters in Christ and Dana can see, year after year, the efforts in place to make a positive difference. Third, Dana loves Augsburg because its fellow members and pastors have become like family. They look for one another during service. Dana and Robert’s children are interacting with and growing alongside of one another. Dana feels support, encouragement, and compassion from the Augsburg family and for that she is incredibly thankful.

Linda Maynard-Stephens was born in Durham, North Carolina and is married to Charles Stephens. Linda has lived in the Winston Salem area since 1981. Linda is currently Vice President of Business Banking with Capital Bank. Linda loves the music and worship at Augsburg and typically attends the 8:30 service. She found Augsburg because of her desire to find an early traditional worship service. While at Epiphany, Linda was the chair of the social ministry, served on stewardship, led the Heifer International project and was active in circle. She served on finance for 3 years for Lutheridge.

Linda is also has served in numerous capacities with Sawtooth School, Piedmont Craftsmen, Lutheridge, Relay for Life, Stokes Partnership for Children, United Way, Arts Based Elementary School, Leadership Winston Salem (class of 2011), Ardmore Baptist Church, Epiphany Lutheran and the Enrichment Center. It’s not too early to think about summer camp 2019 at Lutheridge or Lutherock: The earlier you register your children for summer camp, the more you’ll save. In fact, in 2017 and 2018 on Black Friday, NovusWay offered a buy one, get one half off for camp registrations. In addition, the Hine Fund will also be able to provide up to $200 per

camper to go towards camp tuition for the 2019 summer camp season. This is what you need to do: 1. Register your children as soon as you can to save on registration fees. Camp prices increase with each passing deadline. 2. Please pay the balance in full, if you’re able. If you only want to pay the deposit, that’s OK, but DO NOT check the box on their registration screen that says ‘bill the church’. 3. Please put a copy of your registration in the Hine Fund box in the church workroom. This registration should indicate the child’s name, the week he/she is going to camp, and the amount that you’ve paid to secure their spot. Please include the parent’s name and an email so we can get in touch with you if there are questions. 4. Once the Hine Fund secretary receives your information and it’s confirmed with NovusWay, a $200 check will be mailed to you. 5. NovusWay does have an application for their own camp scholarships for those with financial hardships. More information can be found on their website. If you have applied for this, please indicate that on the paperwork you submit to the Hine Fund, as it could reduce the amount the Hine Fund pays. 6. If for some reason you have to cancel, we do ask that you return the Hine Fund reimbursement to us so we can use it for another camper. If you have any questions, contact Kris Andrews.

Overflow Shelter Signups for the 2018-19 season are open! Augsburg’s shelter will be in operation again every evening from December 1 - March 31. We need volunteers to sign-up for guest reception, goody bags, partial overnight shifts (7:30 P.M. - 12:30 A.M. Sunday-Thursday), full overnight shifts (7:30 P.M. to 7 A.M. Friday-Saturday only) and folks who can prepare dinner (groups such as families, circles, & Sunday school classes work well here) for 30

people every evening. Sign-up directly at http://signup.com/go/AugsburgOverflow2018, or contact John Collins (336-408-1519, [email protected]) or Emily Norris (336-971-4897,[email protected]) if you have questions or need assistance. Additional details on the duties of each position are listed on signup.com. A challenge for this season: Of 121 total nights of shelter, there are only 32 full overnight positions (Friday and Saturday nights) which need to be filled. The overnight slots are always our biggest challenge in securing volunteers for every new season. Can we fill all of these slots on the signup app before the end of the year? Overall, the goal of the Augsburg Social Ministry team and City With Dwellings is to have 75% of all our signups complete prior to December 1 of this year. Please help us out in any way you can!

Calling all poets and artists!

Our 2018 Christmas pageant is coming to Augsburg during Sunday School on December 9. We are putting together a different and creative program which will showcase the many talents of our members. The characters in the play read poems from the perspectives of the Innkeeper, a Shepherd, an Angel, a Wise Man and the Star as they w itness the w onder of Christ ’s birth. We would like to include poems written by our members (children and adults) from the point of view of one of these characters.

Instead of scenery, we plan to use a power point program as a background to the action. We need drawings and paintings (from children and adults) which depict Mary and Joseph coming to Bethlehem, the manger scene with animals, the angels rejoicing, the shepherds going to the stable, the Wise Men following the star and the baby Jesus being worshipped.

If you would like to contribute poetry or art work, please email Debbie Byorick at dbyorick@gmail or call her at 828-577-1093. All poetry and artwork must be submitted by November 18.

Youthrans will meet on Sunday, November 19 at 12:30 p.m. to assemble blankets for our overflow shelter guests.

Join the Augsburg family for the Annual Thanksgiving Lunch Sunday, November 18 following the single 10:30 A.M. service in the Family Life Center. Any bakers are invited to bring a pie to share.

The Annual Interfaith Thanksgiving Service will be at First Christian Church, 2320 Country Club Road, Winston Salem, NC 27104 on Sunday, November 18 at 5 P.M. Those who wish to attend are encouraged to bring a non-perishable food item for Crisis Control. Monetary donations benefit Samaritan Ministries.
