NMHUCOUNSELINGPROGRAMTheDepartmentofGuidance&CounselingintheSchoolofEducationoffersaMasterofArtsinCounselingwith the choice of four different concentrations: Clinical Mental Health Counseling (CMHC), ClinicalRehabilitationCounseling,RehabilitationCounseling,andSchoolCounseling.StudentswhoalreadyhaveaMaster’sinCounselingoracloselyrelatedfieldasdeterminedbythecounselingfaculty,canobtainaCertificateinProfessionalCounseling,RehabilitationCounselingand/orSchoolCounselingtoqualifyforadditionallicensureorcertificationopportunities.During the Spring of 2018, the Counseling Department began in earnest, its pursuit of nationalaccreditationthroughtheCouncilfortheAccreditationofCounselingandRelatedEducationalPrograms(CACREP). Although the program and its concentrations have always endeavored to follow nationalstandards,inpursuingaccreditation,theCounselingDepartmenthastakenthisopportunitytoconductacompletereviewofthecoreofthecounselingprogramandeachconcentrationwithspecialattentiontothe CACREP standards introduced in 2016. The revisions approved by our NMHU Academic AffairsCommitteemeetthestandardsthroughtheadditionofnewcourses,revisionofoldcourses,clarificationof course descriptions, and changing course titles. In addition, in order to meet proposed CACREPrequirements,theSchoolCounselingConcentrationhasbeenincreasedfrom48creditsto60credits.TheRehabilitationCounselingConcentrationwillremainat48creditsandwillbere-evaluatedbefore2023whenanincreaseto60creditswillberequiredforCACREPAccreditationtocontinue.StudentswhobegantheircourseworkpriortotheFallof2018willcontinuewiththeircurrentprogramofstudy.Insomecases,coursesubstitutionsmayneedtobemadewhenacoursehasbeenremovedfromtheprogramandisnolongerbeingtaught.AllstudentswhobegintheircourseworkasoftheFallof2018willfollowtheprogramsofstudyoutlinedlaterinthishandbook.

COUNSELINGPROGRAMVISION,MISSION,ANDCOREVALUESVISIONTheVisionoftheCounselingProgramistopositivelyimpactthegrowthanddevelopmentofeachstudentandtopromoteapositiveself-conceptandtomaximizepotentialinalldomains.

MISSIONThemissionof theNMHUCounselingProgram is to trainentry-levelcounselorswhoareprepared forpositions in community service agencies as mental health counselors, in school systems as schoolcounselors,orinrehabilitationsettingsasrehabilitationcounselors.COREVALUESThe program is student-centered and outcome-based, seeking to train individuals who are skilled inworkingwith diverse populations andwho are ethical, competent, reflective practitioners. Proactive,knowledgeable,professionalcounselorsarecrucialtothegrowthoftheprofession.

EXPECTATIONSOFSTUDENTSStudents are expected to conduct themselves in line with the ethical expectations that guide thecounselingprofessiononthreelevels:PERSONALLYMaintain constant mental-wellness availing yourself of personal counseling experiences. Counselingstudents are expected to develop insight and self-awareness. Students are encouraged to establishcongruencebetweentheir identitiesandthecounselingprofession.Biasesareexploredwithadequateopportunitiesprovidedforpersonal,professionalandintellectualgrowth.“Carl Rogers (1961) stated that the person of the counselor has a greater impact on the therapeuticprocessthantheskillsandtechniquesused.Cavanagh(1982)supportedRogers’suppositionindicatingthat the personality of the counselor ismore important than skills and knowledge. In the counselingprocess,thepersonofthecounseloristheinstrumentthroughwhichtheservicesareprovided.Whiledifferentcounselorsmayusethesametechniques,thedeliveryofthesetechniqueswillnotbethesamebecausetheinstrumentsbeingusedtodelivertheservicesarenotthesame”(Pierce,2010,p.48).StudentsintheNMHUCounselingProgramwillbeevaluatedonthefollowingdispositionsseveraltimesthroughouttheirprogramstoinsureunderstandingandprogresstowardtheirfuturerolesascounselors.

1. Empathy (thecounselorsensesaccurately the feelingsandpersonalmeaningthat theclient isexperiencingandcommunicatesthisacceptantunderstandingtotheclients).

2. Genuineness(clientiswillingtobeauthentic,open,honestwithinthehelpingrelationship).

3. Acceptance(beingabletoregardclientsunconditionally,despitedifferencesinculturalheritage,values,orbeliefsystems).

4. Open-Mindedness (freedomfromfixedpreconceptionsandanattitudeofopenreceptive thatwhichtheclientisexpressing).

5. Cognitive Complexity (ability to view an individualwithin both an individualistic and systemicframework).

6. PsychologicalAdjustment(willingnesstoself-reflectandpromoteone’spsychologicalwell-being).7. Competence(monitoringone’seffectiveness,knowswhentoconsultwithothers,keepscurrent

ACADEMICALLYYou are encouraged to maintain constant interaction with your advisor and instructors aboutexpectations.Weexpectyoutomasterthecontentofyourstudyandacquiretheskillsneededtopracticeprofessionally.Wealsoexpectyoutocommunicateeffectivelywithawarenessofculturaldifferencesandexhibitcriticalandreflectivethinkingskills.Studentsinthecounselingprogramneedtousetechnologyeffectivelyandresponsiblyandmaintainhighethicalstandardsinregardtoacademicintegrity.PROFESSIONALLYCounselors are expected to stay up-to-datewith current developments in the counseling field. As astudent, it is yourprimarygoal todevelopa foundation in counselingknowledgeandskillswhilealsolearning to evaluate and use current research to enhance your future career. PROFESSIONALPRACTICE(FIELDPLACEMENT)ForProfessionalpracticeaccordingtotheCouncilforAccreditationofCounselingandRelatedEducationalPrograms(CACREP,2016),counselingstudentsmustcompleteapprovedandsupervisedfieldplacementexperience. Typically, this experience takes place during you final 3-4 semesters after you havesuccessfully completedmost of core requirements, but in particular, your Essential Interviewing andGroupCounselingcourses.PRACTICUMREQUIREMENT

• Studentsmust completea supervised counselingpracticumexperienceofminimum100clockhours,overafullacademictermof10weeksminimum.

• Participate in at least 40 hours of direct service with actual clients that contribute to thedevelopmentofcounselingskills.

• Haveaweeklyinteractionofaverage1hourwithsupervisors;ortriadicsupervisionwithfacultymember,supervisororsitesupervisorduringpracticum.

• Participate ina regular scheduleof group supervisionof average1!"hoursweekly, throughoutpracticum.

INTERNSHIPREQUIREMENT• AfterPracticum,studentscomplete600clockhoursofasupervisedcounselinginternshipinroles

andsettingssimilartotheirspecialtyareas.• Completeatleast240clockhoursofdirectservice.• Haveweekly interaction of average 1hourwith supervisors or triadic supervisionwith faculty

member,supervisororsitesupervisorduringinternship.• Participate ina regular scheduleof group supervisionof average1!"hoursweekly, throughout

internship.

LIABILITYINSURANCEAll Students registering for Counseling Practicum or Counseling Internship are required to acquireadequateliabilityinsurance.ProfessionalLiabilityInsuranceforcounselingstudentsisavailablethroughtheAmericanCounselingAssociation(800-347-6647),aswellasothermentalhealthorganizations.Thereisalistofwebsitesattheendofthismanual.ProofofinsurancemustaccompanythecompletedandsignedcopyoftheLearningAgreement.SELECTIONOFSITE

Thefirstconsiderationinarrangingplacementistheparticularinterestsoftheindividualstudent.Eachpotentialinternshipstudentisaskedtoindicatethetypeofschoolorclientpopulationwithwhichheorshewouldliketobeinvolved.Listsofrecommendedand/orapprovedinternshipsitesarethensurveyedinanattempttomatchthestudent’sinterestswiththeavailableschooloragency.PlacementproceduresarearrangedbythestudentwithguidancefromtheUniversityinternshipsupervisor.GRADINGOFPROFESSIONALPRACTICEPracticumandInternshipsaregradedpassorfailwhichdoesnotaffectGPA.Practicummustbepassedtoenrollinthefirstinternship,andthefirstinternshipmustbepassedtoenrollinasubsequentinternship.Internshipgradingisbasedon:ClassAttendanceCompletionofRequiredInternshipHoursSiteSupervisorVerifiedRecordofInternshipHoursOn-SiteSupervisor’sFormalEvaluationsProfessionalismPositiveAssessmentofCounselingDispositionsPRACTICUMANDINTERNSHIPLETTERGRADES“S”meansSatisfactory:

A written comprehensive exam: The Counselor Preparation Comprehensive Exam (CPCE), whichcovers theeightcore-curriculumcontentareas.Rehabilitationcounselingstudentscanchoose totaketheCertifiedRehabilitationCounselor(CRC)ExamthatcoverstencurriculumareasratherthantheCPCE.StudentswilltaketheCounselorPreparationComprehensiveExam(CPCE)onaspecifiedday,tobearrangedeachsemester.ExamsareusuallygiveninthemonthsofOctoberandMarch.

4. Acomprehensivecasepresentationorprofessionalpaper.5. Earlyinthesemester,priortograduation,studentsmustcompleteaDegreeCheckwiththeGraduate

Office.

COUNSELORPREPARATIONCOMPREHENSIVEEXAM(CPCE)TheCounselorPreparationComprehensiveExaminationispublishedbytheNationalBoardforCertifiedCounselors.ItisarequiredexamforallHighlandsCounselingProgramstudentsandmustbepassedinordertoreceiveadiploma.Studentsneedtoscoreaminimumof70pointscalculatedfromall8areastopass.Thisscore isnotapercentagebutarawscorewhichmeansyouneedtoanswercorrectlyon70testitems.Forthosewhodonotpassthetest,youcanretaketheexam.Ifyouretaketheexam,anddonotmeettheminimumscore,analternativemaybeprovided.[Currentalternative:Ifyoudonotpasstheexam,analternativesetof tests that correlate toeachof the8areasmaybeprovidedwhich is administered through theCounselingDepartment,self-paced,open-book,andcanbetakenasmanytimesasnecessarytomeettheminimumscoresrequired.]REVIEWOFCOUNSELINGThecounselingstudentwillbeassessedbythefacultyaftercompletingCounselingPracticuminClinicalMentalHealth/SchoolandRehabilitationCounseling.(Ifconcernisraised,thisprocesscanbeginatanylevel.) The purpose of this review is to inform the student of her/his potential for development as acounselorasspecifiedbothbyNewMexicoHighlandsUniversityandtheAmericanCounselingAssociation(ACA)andtheAmericanSchoolCounselorAssociation(ASCA).STUDENTPROBATION,REMEDIATIONANDDISMISSALPOLICYGraduatestudentsareexpectedtomaintainaGradePointAverageof3.0orhighertoremainenrolledintheprogram. Studentswhodonotmeet faculty’s evaluationof academic, professional andpersonaldevelopmentareplacedonprobationandrequiredtodrawaremediationplan,signedwiththeiradvisors.Remediation plans are approved by the counseling faculty and filed in student’s records. AcademicdismissalisissuedtostudentswhodonotmeettherequiredGPAafterbeingonacademicprobationfortwoconsecutivesemesters.AsrequiredbytheAmericanCounselingAssociation’s(ACA)CodeofEthicsandtheCertifiedRehabilitationCounselor (C)CodeofEthics, studentswho fail todemonstratepersonalandprofessionalappropriateand/orethicalbehaviormaybedeniedcontinuationintheprogramuntilsomeformofremediation isfulfilled.Ifastudentdemonstratessuchquestionablebehavior,heorshewillmeetwiththefacultyoftheCounselingProgramtodiscussthefaculty’sconcerns. Ifremediationisdeemednecessary,thestudentwill not be allowed to continue in the program until such remediation is completed. The student’sacceptanceofadmissionintotheCounselingProgramisunderstoodasatacitacceptanceofthesetermsofadmission.

Students normally have five years from their first semester of enrollment in courses to complete thegraduatedegree.Fromadmission throughconferralof thedegree, theuniversity requires students tomaintaincontinuousenrollmentforallsemestersoftheacademicyear(excludingsummers).However,the university also recognizes that circumstances arise where this may not be possible. COUNSELINGCURRICULUMThecoreofthecounselingprogramisthesameforallfourconcentrations.Then,eachconcentrationhasa set of courses that prepare you to work within different settings. We have only one fully onlineconcentration which is a 48-credit concentration in Rehabilitation Counseling.
