WHAT IS A CRIMSON TIDE?
The nickname for UA’s sports teams has been around since 1907,
when a sportswriter likened the football team, entering the field in
signature crimson jerseys, to a flood of crimson or a “Crimson Tide.”
4
ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS
In terms of educational preparation, the college
preparatory curriculum minimum unit requirements
for regular admissions are:
4 units of English
4 units of social sciences, including world
history or a comparable course
3 units of mathematics (must include algebra
I, algebra II, and one unit of either geometry,
trigonometry, or calculus)
3 units of natural sciences, including two
courses with lab components
1 unit of foreign language
5 additional units of academic courses (We
recommend courses in fine arts or computer
literacy, with additional courses in mathematics,
natural sciences and foreign language.)
* The University will accept current and redesigned SAT scores for admissions, scholarships and Honors College. Applicants may submit scores from the current SAT, the redesigned SAT or both.
The University of Alabama employs a competitive admission
process that includes reviewing and evaluating each
application on an individual basis for an applicant’s abilities
as a student and a scholar. Decisions about the potential for
your academic success at UA are based on your performance
on the ACT and/or SAT*, your high-school grade point
average, and your high-school course schedule. (For example:
A student with a 21 ACT or 1000 SAT [critical reading and
math scores only] along with a cumulative GPA of 3.0
should be successful at the University.) A writing score is
not required but can be reviewed if a student does not meet
regular admissions standards as set forth by the ACT/SAT
and GPA requirements.
We are looking for students who show a commitment
to academics and who welcome the robust exchange
of ideas that occurs within a diverse and inclusive learning
environment. Typically, the number of applications received
exceeds the number of spaces available in the freshman class.

SCHOLARSHIPSscholarships.ua.edu
Academic scholarships are merit based, requiring that
students earn certain grade point averages and scores
on the PSAT, SAT or ACT. The scholarship application
provided by the Office of Undergraduate Admissions and
Scholarships is also used by both the UA National Alumni
Association and undergraduate colleges and schools to
select scholarship recipients. An applicant’s significant
achievements, honors and leadership and volunteer
experiences are important factors considered by UA
scholarship committees.
Apply online for admission at apply.ua.edu and for
scholarships at myBama.ua.edu in the fall of your senior
year of high school. For an entering freshman, December
15 is the priority date to be admitted to the University
and to have a completed scholarship application on file.

WHAT IS A CAPSTONE?
The University of Alabama has been known as “The Capstone” since
President George H. Denny (Denny Chimes, Bryant-Denny Stadium) used
the phrase in 1913 to describe our place in public education in our state.
What is a capstone? The Merriam-Webster Collegiate Dictionary, Tenth
Edition says, “the high point; crowning achievement.” We agree!

ROLL TIDE
We yell this at sports events, but “Roll Tide!” is more than just a
cheer or a battle cry. This Tide tradition can be used any time for
congratulation or celebration from one member of the Alabama

of the University, offering a variety of residence halls to suit different personalities and needs.
Here you’ll interact with a diverse community of students and create a network of friends
and classmates within your residence hall. You’ll benefit from a support structure of resident
advisers and freshman advisers who will assist you in your transition to the University and to
living away from home. We encourage you to become an active participant in your new living
community and to take advantage of the exciting campus life at the Capstone.
UA HOUSING

APPLYING FOR HOUSING
You can complete the online housing application at
housing.ua.edu after you are admitted to the University
and have paid the freshman enrollment deposit. Students
who complete their housing application by February 1 will
be eligible to participate in Freshman Room Selection.
Students are encouraged to apply as soon as they are able
in order to maximize their housing choices. Students with
a medical need requiring special accommodations should
submit medical documentation to Housing and Residential
Communities by MARCH 1.
FRESHMAN RESIDENCY PROGRAM
At UA, we are committed to providing our students with
a comprehensive educational experience. In recognition
of the value of a blended academic and residency
experience associated with on-campus living, all first-
year undergraduate students are required to live in
campus residence halls, unless otherwise exempt from this
requirement. Students who will live in the primary residence
of a parent or guardian may be exempt from the freshman
residency program. Additional information regarding the
Freshman Residency Program and the exemption process
can be found at housing.ua.edu, under “New Students.”
HOUSING OPTIONSThe housing assignment process is based on date of
housing application. In order to maximize your options, and
maybe choose your own room, you will want to apply for
housing as soon as possible after admission.
As you consider your on-campus options, here are some
factors to consider:
• Do you want a single-gender or co-ed hall?
• Are you interested in a living-learning community in which your residence hall is tied to your college or academic interest?
• Do you have a preferred roommate?
• Which location do you prefer?
• Which option fits your family’s budget?
Be sure to talk to your family and potential roommates
about your housing preferences.

In recognition of the value of the living-learning experience,
UA requires first-year students to participate in the First Year
Experience Meal Plan. UA is committed to providing its students
with a comprehensive educational experience and believes that
for most first-year students, on-campus dining has numerous
educational, social and dietary benefits. Studies of college
students across the nation consistently show that students who
eat and live on campus are more involved, have higher grade
point averages and are more likely to graduate than students
living at home or off campus.
MEAL PLANSUA students can use meal plans at three all-you-care-to-eat food
service locations around campus—Burke Dining Hall, Lakeside
Dining Hall and Fresh Food Company. All meal plans also can be
used for brunch at Bryant Dining in Bryant Hall.
