ABOUT MEALS IN BRITAINAccording to a recent survey, the main meal of the day for most British people is the evening meal. Seven out of ten families with children sit down at a table for their weekday evening meal, not in front of television, as many people think. For most British families, eating is the main social activity of the day. But breakfast is different. Only one out of four have breakfast with other members of the family. The survey also reveals that the traditional British cooked breakfast of sausage, bacon, eggs and fried bread is disappearing. Nowadays breakfast is a very quick meal. Most people don’t have the time to prepare it or eat it! Only twelve per cent of the population have a regular cooked breakfast. Most people now prefer cereal with milk, toast and marmalade, a cup of tea or coffee and some fruit juice.

CASE 1 (Simon and Jenny)

Well… there’s the chicken and some red meat. There isn’t any fish, except tuna. There are three kilos of potatoes and some onions. There aren’t many other fresh vegetables, but there are a lot of frozen vegetables. They’ve also got some hamburgers and a pizza. This is a couple with young children. Probably they’re parents. They work and they don’t have much time to prepare meals during the week. It’s all basic food and there isn’t wine or beer, just fruit juice and milk.

WHAT’S IN YOUR RUBBISH?

One night, when other journalists were trying to photograph famous people in restaurants or night-clubs, Bruno Moran and Peter Reeve tried something different. They decided to find new information about the stars’ private lives by looking in their rubbish bins. This is what they found in Jack Nicholson’s bin:

Does Jack Nicholson have the world’s healthiest diet? Let’s see.

He obviously drinks a lot of alcohol, especially beer, and he likes expensive champagne. He drinks a little mineral water and occasionally a Seven Up, but surprisingly for an American, he doesn’t drink any coke. Instead of coke, he drinks lots of ginger beer. He doesn’t drink much fruit juice. As for food, he doesn’t have many meals at home, except for breakfast. He usually has some bacon and perhaps a few frozen peas. When he’s hungry between meals he has some corn chips or a few sweets. And as we can see, he smokes a lot of cigarettes, usually Camel.

Read the article and answer.
