Introduction

Created in 1947, the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe(UNECE) aims to promote pan-European economic integration. The UNECEregion comprises 56 countries in Europe, North America, the Caucasus, andCentral Asia. UNECE Countries in Figures uses statistical indicators to give anoverview of the social and economic structure of the countries and territories of this region.

This publication was prepared by the UNECE Statistical Division, and includesdata collected from national and international sources of official statistics. Thedata are for the most recent year available, which is usually 2009. Most of thesedata are also available online through the UNECE Statistical Database(www.unece.org/stats/data.htm), which is regularly updated to include the latestavailable information.

UNECE Countries in Figures is based on a selection of official statistics preparedby the UNECE on its member countries.

Sources

The statistical data in these profiles were extracted from the UNECE StatisticalDatabase (www.unece.org/stats/data): an online collection of official statisticsfrom national and international sources. Additional sources for this publication arelisted on page 131.

Country and territory notes

Cyprus: Data refer to the government-controlled area, with the exceptions of area,

total population and population density, which refer to the whole of Cyprus.

Denmark: Separate profiles are provided for the territories of Greenland andFaroe Islands.

France: Data do not cover the overseas territories (French Polynesia, FrenchSouthern and Antarctic Lands, Mayotte, New Caledonia, Saint Pierre andMiquelon, Wallis and Futuna). Data do not cover the overseas departments(French Guyana, Guadeloupe, Martinique, and Réunion) for the followingindicators: area, life expectancy, total fertility rate, adolescent fertility rate, meanage of women at birth of first child, women in the labour force, gender pay gap,women in part-time employment, employment by occupation, unemployment rate,youth unemployment rate and economic activity rate. For other indicators the four overseas departments are included.

Georgia: In general, data do not cover the regions of Abkhazia and SouthOssetia.

Guernsey (United Kingdom): Total population does not cover inhabitants of

Alderney and Sark.

Israel: The coverage of the data provided by the Central Bureau of Statistics of Israel, does not always coincide with the map given in the country profiles of thispublication.

The position of the United Nations on the question of Jerusalem is contained inGeneral Assembly Resolution 181(II) of 29 November 1947, and subsequentresolutions of the General Assembly and the Security Council concerning thisquestion.

Kosovo: United Nations Security Council Resolution 1244 (1999) provides a legalbasis for the establishment, pending a final settlement, of substantial autonomyand self-government in Kosovo.

Moldova, Republic of: In general, data do not cover the region of Transnistria.

Serbia: Data do not cover Kosovo.

Comparability of data

Readers should be aware that differences in statistical methods might affectcross-country comparability, though every effort has been made to minimize theimpact of this. The UNECE takes an active role in the work to harmonizedefinitions and methodology wherever possible. Primary sources, such as thewebsites of national and international statistical offices, provide more detailedstatistics, descriptions, and technical notes, which can give users a greater insightinto comparability issues.

Data not available

The indication 'data not available' signifies that these particular data are notcurrently available in the UNECE databases. It is possible that some data areavailable from other official sources.

GDP data

The GDP data presented by the UNECE Statistical Division in this publication aretime series ready for immediate analysis. When appropriate, source segmentswith methodological differences have been linked and rescaled to build longconsistent time series, which reflect various national practices (different baseyears, fixed base, chain volume linking, allocation of FISIM, etc.) as explained inmethodological country notes available online through the UNECE StatisticalDatabase (www.unece.org/stats/data).

Total and per capita estimates in US Dollars for GDP and GDP components mayslightly differ for some countries from the estimates published by other nationaland international data sources because of differences in the population andnational accounts data that were used by the UNECE secretariat and those thatwere provided by national authorities participating in the 2005 ICP round at thetime of the comparison.

Data for GDP and its aggregates for the latest periods are preliminary and aresubject to further revision by countries when more exhaustive source data for the

relevant periods become available.

Time period

The data are for the most recent year available, which is usually 2009.

Units of measurement

The units of measurement are indicated in each table. The metric tonne is thestandard unit of weight used. The term "billion" signifies a thousand million.

Adolescent fertility rate: Number of live births to women aged 15-19

per 1000 women aged 15-19.

Area: Area comprising land area and inland water.

Area of forest as percentage of non water land: The percentage of land area (excluding inland water) covered with forest.

Capital: Capital city of the country or territory, usually the seat of

government.

Computer use: Data refer to the share of persons who have used a

computer (including hand-held and palmtops) at least once in the lastthree months, within the population of the corresponding age and sexgroup.

Consumer price index: The Consumer Price Index (CPI) aims to

measure the average changes over time in the general level of prices

of goods and services purchased by the households for their own finalconsumption. The prices of a representative sample of goods andservices are collected in monthly surveys and the CPI is compiled andpublished monthly. It is usually not revised or seasonally adjusted. Tosome extent, differences in compilation methods and in the coverageof goods and services, geographical area and population groups mayinfluence the international comparability of the data.

Date joined UN: The date on which a particular country joined the

United Nations.

Economic activity rate: Share of the labour force (employed +unemployed) in the total population aged 15+.

Employment: All persons (employees and self-employed) engaged in

a productive activity that falls within the production boundary. Itincludes both the residents and the non-residents who work for

resident producer units

Exchange rate: Annual average exchange rate expressed in nationalcurrency units per US dollar. Depending on the country, the exchangerates are market rates which are largely determined by market forces,or official rates which are determined by authorities.

Exports of goods and services: Exports of goods and servicesconsist of sales, barter, gifts or grants, of goods and services fromresidents to non-residents.

GDP in agriculture, industry and services: Measures the produced

value added in respective economic sectors. Agriculture coversagriculture, hunting, forestry and fishing; Industry comprises theproduction industries (including electricity, gas, and water supply),mining and quarrying and construction; Services comprise marketservices and non-market services.

GDP per capita: This entry shows GDP divided by annual average

population.

Homicide: A homicide is intentional or unintentional killing. Intentional

homicide is a death deliberately inflicted on a person by another person, including infanticide. Non-intentional homicide is a death notdeliberately inflicted on a person by another person. That includescrime of manslaughter but excludes traffic accidents that result in adeath of persons.

Imports of goods and services: Import of goods and services consist

of purchases, barter, or receipts of gifts or grants, of goods andservices by residents from non-residents.

Judges: Persons who hear and judge cases in courts of justice,

instruct the jury on points of law, or pronounce judgments.

Labour force: All the persons aged 15+ who are either employed or

unemployed.

Life expectancy at birth: Average number of years a newborn isexpected to live, if the prevailing patterns of mortality at the time of her/his birth were to stay the same throughout her/his life.

Life expectancy at 65:Average number of years a person at the age

of 65 is expected to live, if the prevailing patterns of mortality at thetime when she/he has reached the age of 65 were to stay the samethroughout the rest of his/her life.

Major sectors: Groupings used to measure GDP and Employment in

major sectors according to the International Standard IndustrialClassification of all Economic Activities (ISIC), version 3.1.

Purchasing power parity (PPP): In broad terms, PPP is the relative

cost of the same representative basket of goods when valued at the

domestic prices of two different countries. In other words, PPPs arethe rates of currency conversion that equalize the purchasing power of different currencies. PPPs, and not exchange rates, should be used ininternational comparisons of GDP and its components.

Railway: Line of communication made up by rail exclusively for the

use of railway vehicles. Line of communication is part of the spaceequipped for the execution of transport.

Real GDP growth rate: Real GDP refers to GDP at constant prices.Constant prices estimates are obtained by expressing GDP value inthe prices of a base period. They are used to show the growth(percentage change over previous year) in a country’s economy.

Researchers: Professionals engaged in the conception or creation of

new knowledge, products, processes, methods and systems and alsoin the management of the projects concerned.

Territory: A territory that is constitutionally linked to one of the UNECEmember countries and does not possess full political independence.

Tertiary students: Students enrolled in universities and other higher-

educational institutions. Note: the reference year is that in which theacademic year starts.

Total fertility rate: Average number of children that would be born

alive per woman if all women lived to the end of their childbearingyears and bore children according to the age-specific fertility rates of agiven year.

Total population: Total mid-year or annual average population.

Unemployment: The unemployed are all the persons above a specific

age who, during the reference period, were:

a) without work, i.e. were not in paid employment or self-employment,and

b) currently available for work, i.e. were available for paid employmentor self-employment during the reference period, and

c) seeking work, i.e. had taken specific steps in a specified referenceperiod to seek paid employment or self-employment.

Unemployment rate: Share of the unemployed in the labour force

(employed + unemployed).
