MEET THE
DesinersThis creative duo share their tipsfor decorating and crafting.
Our talented designers, NancyBorsodi and Christy Crafton, eachhave more than 30 years of experi-ence styling eye-catching rooms, creating
one-of-a-kind projects and transforming the
unexpected into the remarkable. Lucky for us,
Nancy and Christy are willing to share some
of the tips theyve learned over the years.
Q.What does every home decoratorneed in her toolbox?Nancy:In addition to basic hand tools, hang-
ing hardware and adhesives, I keep an assort-
ment of ribbon, twine and wire; scrapbook
papers; books; a variety of fabrics; dried florals
and natural elements; painters tape; chalk;
decoupage medium and extension cords.
Christy:I also find it helpful to have a key-
ring collection of mini emergency tools, such
as a measuring tape, folding pliers, pocket-
knife, flashlight and tweezers.
Q.What are some unusual elementsthat people can decorate with?Nancy:Anything you wouldnt expect to use
in home decor! I love to incorporate some-
thing that has an alter ego or was reincarnated
from a former life.
Christy:I have used concrete forming tubes
for many projects. The tubes come in dif-
ferent sizes and are lightweight but sturdy,
so you can alter their shape with just small
electric tools. I find myself turning an item
upside down and looking at it from a differ-ent direction, all while asking myself, What
does the shape remind me of? How easy
would it be to adapt? Can it be painted?
Q.Where can you discover interestingdecorating pieces?Nancy:Thrift stores, flea markets, hobby
shops and home-improvement stores. It
becomes the thrill of the hunt! It requires a
certain degree of patience, digging through
disorganized clutter, but thats usually where
the buried treasure lies. People normally
scan shelves quickly without putting much
effort into looking. With a little extra effort,
I manage to find some great pieces that often
go unnoticed.
Christy:I try to be project-specific when Ishop. If Im looking for dishes or small col-
lectibles, a thrift shop is great. Hobby stores
are perfect for small projects or if Im looking
for inspiration. Home centers, especially
farm-supply stores, offer galvanized surfaces
that are durable and maybe unexpected. And
then there is always the item that you just
have to have even if you dont know why. But
you buy it anyway because intuition rightly
tells youll need it down the road.
Q. Are you seeing any trends indecorating that you absolutely loveNancy:The trend with wordswhether it
single sentiment on a sign or object or a m
sage spelled out in a bannerhas to be my
favorite trend. The fact that words can insp
an immediate reaction and emotion is magto me! Marquee signs and letters, which ar
hot right now, bring the message to life.
Christy:I have always loved old Halloween
lanterns, and at a recent trade show, I saw l
of vintage-inspired reproductions that re-
kindled my love of this look. So, for this iss
I made my own cat lantern using a pumpk
form. It is more original than just a copy o
a vintage piece, and it makes me smile. The
other trend? Lots of glitter!

Sweeten your eating area withcrisp and bright apple decor.
Your home will be the apple of
your eye with these DIY
projects featuring falls favorit
fruit. Our designers used a set
of dishes stamped with an apple design as
the inspiration to create several decorative
accents. We stamped a burlap runner and
valance using a cut apple, strung dried
apple slices onto lengths of twine for
harvest garlands, painted a Market sign on
an old barn board, repurposed a metal
basket into a pendant light, arranged brigh
red and green apples together with lemon
leaves as a centerpiece, and dipped carame
apples as place-card holders. The result is a
bushel-full of beautiful autumn decor!

SEAT SWAGDecorate your chairs with bouquets of dried apples and berries
tied to the chair backs with burlap. With floral wire, bundle
together small twigs, branches of lemon leaves, sprigs of
hypericum berries and green filler. Then glue on slices of dried
apples, layering them in and among the foliage. Tie a piece of
burlap ribbon around the top of the swag, and then use that to
tie the entire swag to the back of your chair.
FRESH & FRUITYTo dress up the center of the table, we
stamped this burlap runner and filled a
metal tray with candles, apples and foliag
To replicate the look on your table, follow
these simple steps:
1.To make the centerpiece, start with ashallow metal tray. We used a window-bo
tray, which can be found at garden center2.Place white pillar candles randomlyin the tray, alternating the sizes to createvisual appeal.
3.Nestle red and green apples aroundthe candles, filling in more of the tray.Place red and green apples next to each
other for the best look.
4.Tuck sprigs of fresh lemon leavesunderneath the apples to create a more lu
layered look.
5.For the final pop of bright red color, insert small branches of hypericum berrie
around the apples.

1.To create the runner, cut a rectangular length of light-
colored burlap to fit your table. We chose to make the runner
small enough to fit entirely on the table, but you may choose
to let it go longer to hang over the edges.2.After you cut your burlap, fray the edges by pulling out
strands of burlap on each side to create your fringe.
3.To stamp the runner, cut an apple in half, leaving the core
in place. Brush the cut edge of the apple with red acrylic paint,
and press the painted apple firmly onto your burlap. Practice
first on an extra piece of burlap to figure out how much paint
youll need. If youd prefer, you can insert a fork or other
item into the apple to act as a handle if your hand is not that
steady. Continue stamping apple shapes randomly on the burlap,
turning the apple to create stamps in different directions.
4. Next, paint the other half of the apple with green paint, and
stamp the apple shapes randomly around the red stamps. Ifyoud prefer, you can first cut out red and green paper circles and
position them around the burlap fabric to determine where you
will place your stamps. Let dry.
5. To create stems, dip the edge of a sponge brush into your
paint, then push one edge of the brush onto the runner about
inch from the top of the apple to create the wider top of the
stem, then lightly roll the brush edge toward the apple, lifting as
you go to make the stem thinner until it reaches the apple.

A BUSHEL AND A PECKFill small bushel baskets with brightly colored
apples, and tie them onto a ladder to lighten up a
corner of your room. To create the simple garlandhanging on the side, cut a length of twine and
string on dried apple slices, cinnamon sticks and
red wood beads in an alternating design, knotting
the twine in between each item.
CARAMEL CALL-OUTSGuests will love to find their place at the table when
it means delicious caramel apples for them to enjoy.Turn these sweet treats into place-card holders by
adding long, thin branches and simple scrapbook
leaves. Be sure the extra leaves and branch shoots are
trimmed from the branch so that people can easily
grab the stick. Sharpen the end of the stick into a poin
with a knife, and insert it deep into the apple. Using
decorative-edge scissors, cut two leaf shapes for each
apple out of scrapbook paper. Write or print your
guests names on one of the leaves. Fold the leaves in
half to create a crease. Hot glue the two leaves together
lightly at one edge, and then glue the two leaves to you
stick. When finished, place your caramel apple name
tags on a small plate, tart dish or fluted paper liner.

SHOW OFF YOUR SLICESDried apple slices strung on twine make festive fall
garlands. Using a large quilting needle, string dried slices
of apple onto a length of twine, leaving excess at each end.
Lay your twine onto a flat surface, and flatten the apples
down so they are slightly overlapping each other. Be sure
the apples are all facing outward toward the ends of the
twine. Insert lemon leaves randomly between the apple
DRY APPLE SLICES LIKE A PROIts easy to make your own dried apple slices. First, wash your apples, but dont peel them; leaving the skin on creates a nice border on theslices. Remove the core, and cut the apples into thin slices; dip themin lemon juice to prevent browning. Lay the apple slices on parchment
papercovered baking sheets, and place them in an oven preheated to200F. Bake the slices for about an hour; turn over, and bake anotherhour. Turn the oven off, open the door, and leave apple slices tocompletely dry in the oven overnight.
slices. Lightly glue the slices to each other to keep them in
place, and lightly glue the lemon leaves in place. For the
center, glue one apple slice facing forward onto the center.
Tie two or three cinnamon sticks together in the center with
twine, and then tie the sticks onto your garland at the ends.
Add dabs of glue, if necessary, to keep the cinnamon sticks
securely in place.

When the air turns crisp and the leaves start blowingacross your patio, its time to swap out those sunnysummer colors for the cool touch of autumn. Luckily,

Warm & WoodsyDecorative throw pillows are a great way to spiff up
your space for the season, but you dont have to go
out searching for new soft goods. Take a tip from our
designers and attach fall-patterned fabrics to plain
pillows to add that autumn pizzazz. You can cut out
squares of fabric and simply sew them to the front of
your pillow using a loose basting stitch, or if you wansomething more decorative, you can tack the fabric
in place at the corners by sewing on four buttons.
Another option is to cut a longer piece of material
that can wrap around the pillow, and hold it in place
with two buttons on the front to create an envelope
look. We added even more dimension to our pillows
by layering our patterned fabric onto slightly larger
pieces of green burlap.

Light the WayGive fall flair to an existing lamp
by wrapping it in autumn hues.Purchase a plain cream-colored
linen shade (or find a cheap one
at a garage sale) and spray paint
it a light tan color. When dry,
paint the wide edges at the top
and bottom a darker brown color.
Cut a piece of wide cream-colored
ribbon and two thinner pieces of
orange-red ribbon to fit around
the shade. Wrap the cream-
colored ribbon around the middle
of the shade, and secure it to the
shade with either straight pins fora temporary change or hot glue
for a more permanent solution.
Wrap the orange-red ribbon
around the top and bottom of the
cream ribbon. Secure in place as
you did with the other ribbon. For
the finishing touch, swap out the
regular finial for a seasonal one
like this oversize acorn.

Cabinet Cross-OverIts easy to seasonally update an
existing hutch or cabinet by lining the
back wall with patterned fabric. Just
that simple touch can dramatically
change the entire feel of a room.
For this weathered black cabinet, we
chose a classic French Provence print
in gold and rust. First, remove the
shelves and measure the inside width
and height of the cabinet. (If you
cant remove the shelves, measure theheight between each shelf separately.)
Cut foam board or stiff cardboard
to fit your measurements. You will
be adhering the fabric to this board
rather than the actual cabinet back so
you are not permanently changing the
look of the cabinet. Cut your fabric to
the size of the board, allowing 1" extra
on each side. Center the board over
the underside of the fabric. Neatly
fold the excess fabric over the boards
edges, clipping the corners and miter
folding them to create a flat back.Tape or staple the fabric in place.
Push the board into the back of the
cabinet, nestling it in place.
Change out plain cabinetknobs for designs thatcomplement your fabric.

SWAPW ith Halloween falling smack in the middle of the season, it can be hard to knowhow to decorate. Do you try to mix and mingle Halloween bats with autumnleaves? Or do you stick with just one decorating style? Luckily, many of autumnsaccents will work for both settings. Carved pumpkins can show their ghoulish face forHalloween, then be turned around to their plain side for fall. Miniature orange lights canbrighten a beautiful fall garland or add a creepy glow to hanging bats and witches. Ourstylists put their decorating talents to work to show you how the same setting can easilybe styled for fall or tricked out for Halloween.

SPOOKY
Turn your hutch into a hauntingly fun display bysimply taking off the lids of your painted boxes to revHalloween designs that youve decoupaged to the insidbottoms. Exchange the green fabric for a silky spiderwrunner, and enhance the setting with trick-or-treataccents and jars filled with candy corn. Carry the toneof this display to the inside of the hutch by bringing aorange or black dishes to the front.
STUNNING
Wood cheese boxes are a fabulously functional decorating accessory. Not only
do they look great in different settings, but they can be very useful for hiding orstoring small items. If you cant find actual cheese boxes, you can easily acquireround papier-mch boxes at a hobby or crafting store. For these fall-to-Halloweensettings, first paint your boxes a warm orange color. After they dry, decoupagevintage seed-packet images or old-fashioned advertising pictures onto the tops ofthe lids. You can find images online to download and print (www.thegraphicsfairy.com is a great site for free public-domain images), or check out the scrapbooksection of your crafting store. For your autumn hutch, assemble your display on topof a section of green fabric or burlap. Set the boxes on their side so the images show, and accent the display with small pumpkins and vines of orange berries. Bring anygreen-colored dishes to the foreground of your cabinet to add more color.

A metal topiary set in an outdoor urn is a great decorative element because its easy to stylefor any holiday. For everyday fall decorating, place a floral wreath atop the urn, and thenset a large orange pumpkin in the middle topped with smaller pumpkins or gourds (drive athin metal rod through the pumpkins to hold them in place). Position the topiary over thepumpkins, pushing it down into the wreath to hold it in place. Twist fall garland, or grapevineand silk leaves, around the outside of the topiary in a loose spiral; hold the vines in place withfloral wire. INVITING
This autumn, let your entryway take on an elegant seasonal look by dressing upa bench in fashion-forward fall colors. Cover your bench with a long, burlap-
wrapped cushion (easy to do on your own!) and top with warm earth-tonedpillows. Wrap one of the pillows in a wide rusty gold burlap ribbon for addedappeal. Drape similar-colored scarves on a coat rack to easily grab for a walk
outdoors. Bundle together long stems of wheat or other fall grasses, and placethe sheaf in a wire wall pocket. Place a basket filled with several different-coloredgourds and twigs on the floor near the bench, and set another pumpkin in aring of harvest fruits and leaves set atop a small concrete plant holder. For thefinal genius touch, let the setting glow with a trio of hanging acorn-shapedcandleholders. These votive holders are actually decorative glass shades usedfor home lighting. FRIGHTENING
When Halloween rolls around, add a little spookiness to your entryway. Coveryour seat cushion in some fun Halloween fabric, or stamp jack-o-lanterns or otherseasonal designs onto plain fabric. Swap out your elegant fall pillows for brighter
orange and green pillows, and then mix them with vintage-style characters. Topersonalize a standard pillow, cut a square of fabric slightly smaller than the pillowfront, fringe the edges and, using letter stamps, spell out a fun phrase with fabricpaint. Trim the stamped square with a decorative braid and buttons, and attach itto the front of the pillow. Trade your sheaves of wheat for a pair of brooms, andinstead of hanging colorful scarves on the coat rack, drape it in a witch hat andblack gauze. On the windowsill, fill the glass candleholders with glowing battery-operated orange lights, and cloak them with black cheesecloth. Finish off yourHalloween entryway with a framed vintage-style print on the wall.

GARNISH A CHANDELIERThis hanging candle chandelier gets a green touch
with carved-out artichokes acting as candleholders.
Cut the stems off the bottoms of your artichokes and
carefully loosen and clip the top center leaves to expos
the inside core. Use an artists knife to shape a hole
inside each artichoke to firmly hold the end of a taper
candle. After youve cut your artichokes, lightly brush
the leaves and top with gold paint to give them a gilde
look. Arrange several wine-colored leaves around the
base of the chandelier candleholders, sticking them
through the spike in the chandelier and fanning them
out. Center the artichokes on the spikes and push them
down firmly. If necessary, add some glue or adhesive
putty to stabilize the pieces. Insert the candles into the
artichokes and light them to illuminate your room.
LIGHT THE WAYIlluminated mercury-glass pumpkins set among a fall mix of
florals, fruits and vegetables create a softly glowing centerpiece for
your table. Place battery-operated LED lights inside three colored
glass pumpkins, or use colored lights inside clear glass pumpkins.
Set your middle pumpkin on a raised pillar to add dimension to
the arrangement, but dont make it so high that it gets in the way
of conversation. Lightly brush artichokes and dried pomegranates
with gold paint. When dry, place them around the base of the
pumpkins, and nestle ornamental cabbage heads between the glass
pumpkins. Tuck deeply colored preserved leaves and other florals
such as seeded eucalyptus, mini pompom mums and hypericum
berries among the vegetables to fill out the centerpiece.
TIP:If you want your freshflorals to last longer,
insert them into smallfloral tubes hidden in
the arrangement.

STEP 1To make these brocade-likesalad plates, start with inexpensive clglass plates and paper doilies about th
same size as your plates. Lightly coat smooth side of a paper doily with spraadhesive, and let it sit for a few minutso the adhesive gets tacky. Turn yourglass plate upside down, and center thdoily glue-side down over the backsidof the plate. Press it onto the surface asmooth away any wrinkles.
STEP 2Spray the doily-adheredbackside of the plate lightly with shingold paint until the doily design is cleand evident. Apply the paint in severalight passes to avoid drips. Let dry fora short time (until the paint does notappear to be wet), then carefully peelaway the doily, leaving the design onthe plate. Let dry completely.

STEP 3Lightly spray the entirebackside of the plate with a darker
antique-gold paint, filling in theopen spaces left from the doily. Letdry face-down overnight beforeplacing on your table.
GOLDEN TONESCreating a multilayered place setting using chargers and smaller plates
immediately evokes the feel of a special occasion. To arrange this setting, start
with a large dark-colored charger as a base; ours is hammered brass. Atop thecharger, place a lighter golden-toned dinner plate, such as this glazed ceramic
plate with a beaded edge. Top the charger and dinner plate with a handmade
brocade-like salad plate. (Follow our instructions to create your own.) Tie up
the two plates with a translucent organza ribbon tied in a bow at the top. To
identify each guests seat, glue a small metal initial onto a wine-colored tag
and loop it through the bow. Finish off your elegant stack by tucking a few
preserved leaves in between the charger and the dinner plate and setting a
florals-filled miniature gold vase on top.

Rich HuesThe bold red walls and charming country accents inthis Massachusetts home give it seasonal appeal.
The Rousseau familys Granby,Massachusetts, home is bursting withthe magical palette of autumn, includingthe deep red walls that set off fall accents
so well. Ive done the whole house in very rich fallcolors, says Tammy Rousseau, but they seem to workfor any season. And work they do. Even though thehome is alive in fall color from the bold red walls tovelvety green draperies to burnished wood cabinets, the colors easily blend any time of the year. Believe itor not, red is a very flexible color, Tammy says. Thereare a lot of ways you can accent redwith navy, green, tan or black. It goes fairly well with everything.Through her decor, Tammy has created what she calls,a seasonal house, allowing her decorating to shiftseamlessly from winter to spring to summer.
Besides mixing colors, Tammy also mingles differentstyles of furnishings and accessories. Shes not averseto draping a traditional table in a colorful patchwork
quilt or piling primitive pillows atop her red couch. Ijust go with pieces Im drawn to and make them work,Tammy says. Everything that is in the house reflectsmy personality and creativity.
For fall, Tammys richly hued home gets adornedwith fall foliage and cozy quilts as well as herubiquitous roosters. I like them because they come inso many different shapes and sizes. I think I had gottenone rooster picture, and from there, it went wild.
PHOTOGRAPHED AND STYLED BY FRANKLIN AND ESTHER SCHMIDT.
Flickering candles combine a touch of spookiness with the wadelights of fall. Swapping your normal pillar candles for orange oinstantly transforms the look. For autumn, Tammy fills her roostecontainer with sunflowers, dried pods and colorful leaves.

Tap into TextureTammy Rousseau uses plenty of natural elements to addtexture to her home. Here are some of her ideas:
1.Incorporate plants or other natural items to softensharp lines. Wrap cornstalks around pillars and posts ordrape leafy garlands across mantels and shelves.
2.Fill bowls and crocks with outdoor accents.Pinecones are often free and plentiful and look beautifulin crocks or baskets. Bundles of branches or pussywillows add height as well as interest.
3.Scatter pumpkins, gourds and other seasonal bountythroughout your home. I go to four or five different farmstands to find the most unique pumpkins and squash,Tammy says. The bumpier and uglier the better.Wheat is a simple and unique vase filler and a great

PAST
ReclaimingA California couple combine three rustic structuresinto one past-perfect retreat.
An 18th-century timber dwelling fromWest Virginia, a New Hampshire barnfrom the 1700s and a one-room log cabinwith split logs from Tennessee. Theantiquated architecture of these East Coast buildingswould appear out of place 3,000 miles away; yet, nestled
into the panoramic mountains of Californias Santa YnezValley and connected with a salvaged Vermont slate roof, this trio creates a prairie-style paradise.
The 150-acre property was purchased in 1990, and withits breathtaking views, it was difficult to find a home tomatch the beauty of the valley. So instead of one home, theCalifornia couple that owned the land decided three would
do the job nicely. Each building was disassembled before was shipped from New England to the West Coast, and thhistory of the structure was preserved and resurrected us18th-century construction techniques. The 1700s barnbecame the main living area and includes a great room, kitchen, breakfast area and guest bedroom. The timber
dwelling turned into the master suite and den, and the locabin got new life as the familys dining room.
The homes aged timber exterior and primitive woodinterior perfectly melded the East Coast architecture withrural California style. Early American furnishings andfolk-art pieces created a look that the owners believed
showed the best of both worlds.

With two retired fashion designersliving together, its no surprisethat their home and guest cottageare awash in color. We are both
designers, so fabrics, patterns and textures are some-thing we like to combine in bold and unusual ways, says David Minka, who, along with his partner, YvonLe Fichant, has turned a Bucks County, Pennsylvania, abode into a jewel of a home that blends Frenchcountry with English cottage and a touch of Ameri-can Arts and Crafts. Yvon is a French native, and theduo have spent lots of time traveling the Frenchcountryside, gathering both ideas and furniturepieces. So their home and guest cottage reflect thatfeel: Very eclectic, David says. But first and fore-most, comfortable.
The 14-acre property contains a late-19th-centuryclapboard farmhouse in which David and Yvon live,as well as the older stone cottage and two barns, oneof which has been restored into Davids artists studio. The buildings are set among extensive decades-oldplantings of bearded iris, Oriental lilies, daffodils, violets, English roses, hydrangeas and peonies, and
these blooms make their way into David and Yvonsdecorating. Carpets, quilts and upholstery all reflectthe various hues of the gardens, and, as in nature, those colors get mixed with a variety of greens as ananchor. You can say we are intoxicated by color,David says. We like to go full out. We never thinkabout right or wrong. Taking chances and makingbold choices pays off, so you dont get bored.
Hydrangeas planted around the propertybecome decorative garlands when dried and
brought indoors. David Minkas paintings, which he describes as colorful and a bit naive,
are very much in the spirit of the cottage.

with keeping the color mixture a combination ofrich, saturated brights, the look is always rich andBohemian, David says.

LIVING WITHCOLOR
Former fashion designers David Minka andYvon Le Fichant love to work with bold, vibrant color palettes. In their historicfarmhouse and stone guest cottage, they mixfabrics, patterns and textures into a casualBohemian look. Here are their decoratingphilosophies when it comes to using color:
Turn to nature to bring vibrant reds, pinks, purples and golden yellows intoyour home, but include plenty of greens toanchor the colors.
We prefer to drown ourselves in color,David says. No half-way. Its going to bemore color or even MORE color.
Even though youre mixing a lot of colors,
keep them in the same values. Dont mixbrights and pastels, for example.
If the idea of living in a little jewel boxappeals to you, always go for the rich tones.

he Washington-state farmhouse and adjoiningland thats home to Kathleen and Galen Wedinspans four generations both in its structureand original fixtures as well as the manyantiques and heirlooms that are dotted
throughout. This family treasure creates a wonderful setting torelish in the magic of autumn.
Family plays an important role in the Wedins lives, and theyuse their home as a way to showcase the artwork of theirdaughter and Kathleens brother, as well as display items thatwere passed down from grandparents or carried over fromSweden. Even old items found on the farm have been repurposed
into charming country decor. When we moved in, I couldntafford to spend a lot of money on decorating, Kathleen says.Little by little, I developed my style into a country farm look.
To help decorate her home, Kathleen received encouragementfrom her friend, a fellow designer, as well as from variousdecorating magazines. But sometimes, the changes came aboutpurely from need. She removed her kitchen cabinet doors to helpsee what was in the deep cabinets, and she had a local artisanbuild a pot rack and pine island of her own design.
Through the years, Kathleens decorating style has changed. The early Scandinavian blues have given way to Kathleenscurrent decorating passiona muted palette of tangy mustards,
rich reds and beloved blacks. That palette now is the perfectbackdrop for falls splendor.
An interior designer combines family heirlooms andsalvaged antiques into a generations-old farmhouse

SERVE UP WOODSY STYLEThis old frame was spiffed up with a scenic view, outfitted with
leaf handles and repurposed into a clever snack tray. Select a deep
frame, and remove the cardboard backing. Cover the backing with
paper featuring a natural pattern such as leaves, trees or wood grain.
Glue small felt or paper animal-face cutouts on the paper. Cut thin
cardboard strips to fit the inner top and bottom edge of the
frame. These strips will act as spacers and provide depth
between the glass and the background. Lay
the frame face-down with the glass
in place, and add the spacers atop
the glass. Cut lengths of twigs to fit
snugly inside the frame from top tobottom and glue them to the spacers.
Glue a few pinecones between the
twigs. Set your background face-down
into the frame and fold down the metal
tabs to hold it in place. Turn the frame over
and drill holes into the sides. Screw in leaf-
shaped drawer pulls for handles.

Clever
This set of DIY partyware will mesmerize your Hal-
loween guests. For the black cat mug, look for cabo-
chons or other gemstones that look like cats eyes in
the jewelry section of your hobby store and glue them
onto a black mug. For the plate, find an image of cats
eyes online and print it out. Enlarge the eyes, if needed,
on a color copier, and cut them out with a jagged edge
to create the look of eyelashes. Cut out thin strips of
off-white paper for the whiskers. Arrange the eyes and
whiskers on the underside of a clear glass or plastic
plate and adhere with decoupage glue. Set the clearplate on top of a solid black plate to complete the illu-
sion of a bewitching black cat.

set a bouquet of fall florals in resin for a permanent display. Wrap several strips of
birch bark around a clear glass vase, allow for overlap, and pull tight. Apply glue to the
overlapped edges and press and hold in place until the glue dries. Mix floral-setting
resin following manufacturers directions in the bottom of the vase. Gather together in
your hand a bouquet using such pieces as onion grass stems, pinecone stems, maple leaf
stems, pheasant feathers, burlap hydrangeas and sunflowers, and berry bush. Tie off the
bouquet with cloth-covered stem wire and insert into the resin. Allow to set for 24 hours.

CREATE A RAKE GREETINGGreet fall visitors with an old-fashioned bamboo
rake showing off a gathering of colorful autumngrasses and a welcoming sign. Arrange a fan of
different grasses and hot glue or wire it to the
neck of the rake. Wrap twine around the grasses
and rake neck to cover the stems, secure with a
simple overhand knot, and then knot the loose
twine ends. Hang a mini chalkboard featuring a
handwritten message in the center of the rake,
looping the hanger over the tines.
HANG YOUR HARVESTThis peg-rack display is incredibly
simple yet remarkably beautiful.
Gather the colors of the fall harvest
from your garden or farmers market
and create bundles of wheat, Indian
corn, chilies, gourds or herbs that you
can hang from a rustic rack. Secure the
bundles with twine or covered wire
and twist a loop at the end for hanging.
For added interest, soak the Indian
corn husks in warm water and braid
them. To create the spiral of the chilies,
string them together one at a time.

STYLE A SUNNY ARRANGEMENT
With their bright yellow petals and nodding blooms, sunflowers simplybespeak fall. Group them together in an earthenware pitcher set into a
larger bowl. Fill the remaining space in the bowl with dried oranges, mini
pumpkins, grapevine balls and red and gold leaves. Place the entire piece
atop a grapevine wreath.
SET A FALL TABLEAutumns golden hues make for gorgeous tablescaping. Place a circle of
bright berry twigs between a charger and plate and rest a bosc pear on
top. Fashion fall feather trees by gluing colored feathers to foam cones.
Start at the bottom and work your way up, overlapping the feathers and
covering every space.
FILL A FRESH APPLE VASEThis sweet fall fruit provides plenty of color for displays. Fill a clear glasscylinder vase with small red and green apples, white pumpkins and a
few walnuts. Tuck shorter florals into the apples and slide tall grasses
into the center.

TALK WITH TWIGSTurning letters and words into a decorative
element is a hot trend right now in both art and
home decor. You can get this look by shaping
letters out of twigs, flowers and other natural
pieces to express your fall sentiment. First, sketch
out your word on a large sheet of paper to help
you determine the size of your letters and to act
as a pattern for forming them. Cut twigs to form
the basic lines, setting them in place over thepattern. You can also cut off branches from silk
florals to use for the straight lines, allowing leaves
or buds to extend out past the end of the letter.
For the curved parts of the letters, use wired faux
floral stems, as you can bend them into whatever
shape you need. Secure your pieces together with
hot glue or thin floral wire, and embellish with
additional leaves, blooms or berries.
Make your letters look more natural by varyinthe thikness, length and olor of the twigs.

BALE TOGETHER A BEAUTYDress up a decorative straw bale with a bundle of mums and other faux
florals. Wrap 1" green ribbon side by side around the straw bale in the
same manner as you would wrap a gift package. Secure the ribbon endswith greening floral pins. Leave a 3" square opening on the top center
for making the floral arrangement. Wrap a patterned fall ribbon around
the straw bale on top of the green ribbon and secure with greening
pins. Arrange silk mums atop the bale, inserting the stems down into
the bale and working outward for a natural appearance. Create loops
out of the ribbon and slide them under the mums; glue in place. Cut
apart orange berry stems and insert them into the arrangement, letting
them droop over the straw bale. Cut a mustard bush into stems and
insert them into the top to add height. Glue all the florals into place.

FRAME COLORFUL LEAVESDelicate lacy skeleton leaves look fabulous displayunder glass. Follow our detailed instructions to frayour own masterpiece.
1.Purchase a selection of colorful skeleton leavesand find two pieces of equal-size polished-edgeglass. Old frames from thrift stores are a great soufor inexpensive glass pieces.
2.Lay one piece of glass down and arrange yourleaves on top of it; alternate the sizes and colors othe leaves and overlap them to create a pleasingpattern. Be sure to leave a border of empty spacearound the outside edges. Lay the second piece ofglass atop the first, carefully lining up the edgeswithout disturbing the leaves.
3.Tape the two pieces of glass together along theedges with low-tack painters tape to hold them inplace while you wrap the glass with wire.
4.Starting at the back of the piece and a bit in froone corner, wrap the wire lengthwise around thefront and back of the glass pieces, then twist thewire to the opposite direction to wrap around thewidth of the glass, meeting back at the start. This similar to wrapping a ribbon around a package. Puthe wire as tight as possible, being careful so theglass doesnt splinter on the edges underneath thewire. Cut the wire, leaving several inches of exceson either end, and create a rosette by grabbing thwire ends with needle-nose pliers and turning in acircular motion.
5.Repeat the wrapping process from Step 4, but ttime, start from the opposite corner and wrap thewire around the remaining length and width of thglass and finish with another rosette on the back. The back rosettes help keep the finished piece awfrom the wall, giving it a more dimensional look.
6.To form the four rosettes on the front and theremaining two on the back, wrap approximately 2of wire around each empty corner where the wireintersect and twirl in a circle with needle-nose pli
7.Create a hanger by twisting small wire loopsaround the rosettes on the top back of the piece.
Hang your framed leaves from the loops over twonails in the wall.
Twisted opper wire is thin, flexibleand wraps well around surfaes.
