As recently as October 2015, Rodney Clawson (“Fast,” “American Kids”) won the Nashville Songwriters Association International’s songwriter of the year award.

posing ranks, too, particularly when songwriter Max T. Barnes topped the chart on Jan. 4, 1992, with Collin Raye’s “Love, Me” at a time when his father, Max D. Barnes, trailed at No. 4 with Vince Gill’s “Look at Me.”

Throw in family units where at least one member was an artist — such as son Thomas Rhett and father Rhett Akins, or the 1990s team of Rodney Crowell and then-wife Rosanne Cash — and the ranks swell.

But it doesn’t appear that any family beyond the Clawsons has had three full-time songwriters earn concurrent hits independently of each other.

Much about their success is out of their control, but the fact that it has happened without any collaborations was intentional. Rodney, who earned his first top five single with Buddy Jewell’s 2003 release “Sweet Southern Comfort,” encouraged both Brad and Galyon to pursue their songwriting separately to avoid the appearance that they were simply putting their names on his songs.

“If anything positive ever happened — which it did — she would share credit with her co-writers,” says Rodney of Galyon. “Nobody could say that she married a guy who already had a few hits and she was just riding his coattails. We wanted to avoid that happening so she could go out and make her mark and get credit for it.”

Rodney set an example for the other two, even if he tried to avoid meddling. Galyon had some writing in her background — she had been the yearbook editor during high school in Kansas — but she was pursuing artist management at Belmont University when the idea of writing songs took hold.

“Getting to know Rodney and getting to know a lot of other songwriters really opened my eyes to it,” she says. “So I was a closeted songwriter for many years, probably ’til I was about 21.”

Brad was meanwhile opposed to songwriting. He had watched his father commute from a farm in West Texas to Nashville to establish his career and was very aware of the financial uncertainties it entailed. That firsthand experience took away any fantasies that writing songs is an easy profession.

“That was a big part in the beginning that kept me at arms’ length,” says Brad, recalling his early resistance. “I always liked music, and I always played music, but I didn’t want to have to work that hard to maybe make it. More people fail than make it, and I was like, ‘There’s so many other things that I would love to do.’ ”

Oddly enough, Brad’s pursuit of a parks management degree at Middle Tennessee State University proved to be its own dead end. When he graduated, he met with a series of closed doors. Meanwhile, he had worked with his college roommate — Mitchell Tenpenny, who recently signed with Sony Music Nashville — as a songwriter and guitarist, and Brad got the bug. He valeted cars at the Omni Nashville Hotel and worked at a retail store to pay the bills while he honed his writing craft and eventually received several less favorable offers before he landed with Ashley Gorley’s Taperoom Music. (Rodney writes for Big Loud; Galyon is signed with Warner/Chappell).

With all three now vying for singles, it creates some odd moments. Galyon says Florida Georgia Line’s “Smooth,” which she co-authored, was allowed to die in the teens when Brad’s “Up Down” began to take off for the duo. And one of her husband’s songs knocked her out of a prime position with an undisclosed artist.

“I got the phone call that my song was supposed to be the first single, and then they changed their minds and it was Rodney’s instead of mine, and then mine didn’t even make the record,” she recalls. “That stings, but it’s still my family and big picture, we [all] win when one of us wins.”

It creates other odd clashes, too, especially if Galyon and her husband hear a potential song title at the same time.

“There have definitely been moments where we look at each other and go, ‘First to write it wins,’ ” she says.

But there are side benefits, too. Since they all share a very unique career, they’re able to understand one another in ways that most non-writing family members would not. And now that they have begun to loosen their own restrictions and Rodney has written separately with each relative, they’re sharing in other ways. The second song Rodney wrote with Galyon, “Win Life,” is the closing track on Luke Bryan’s What Makes You Country. And writing together allows them to see one another as co-workers — not just as relatives — though Brad suggests that writing with his dad creates some self-conscious moments.

“It’s not uncomfortable, but it is different than writing with other people,” says Brad. “I want to have good ideas and don’t want to say anything stupid. I don’t want to show off, but I do want to show up.”

Meanwhile, the family is well aware that it’s beating the odds by having three members simultaneously chart in country’s top 40.

“There’s way more players in the NBA,” says Rodney, “than there are successful songwriters.”

Singer-songwriter Scotty McCreery notches his first No. 1 among three top 10s on Billboard’s Country Airplay chart as ballad “Five More Minutes” (Triple Tigers) ascends 3-1 in its 40th week on the tally (dated March 4), gaining by 10 percent to 40.2 million audience impressions in the week ending Feb. 25, according to Nielsen Music. On the Hot Country Songs chart, which blends airplay, streaming and sales data, “Five” holds at its No. 4 high.

“I’d just lost my granddaddy Bill,” McCreery recently told Billboard during an upcoming episode of the Billboard Chart Beat Podcast of the song, which he co-wrote with Frank Rogers and Monty Criswell. “He was my guy, a cool cat, 85 years old, doing cannonballs in the backyard pool. He was awesome, I loved him. Monty was the one who said, ‘It’s just like you wanted five more minutes with the guy.’ I was like, ‘That’s the song I’m going to write today.’ ”

The 24-year-old McCreery, a native of Garner, N.C., won the 10th edition of American Idol, donning the crown on May 25, 2011. Notably, the runner-up that season was Lauren Alaina, who achieved her first Country Airplay No. 1 when “Road Less Traveled” topped the chart dated April 22, 2017. She followed “Road” (her sixth entry on the list) with her second trip to No. 1 when she was featured on Kane Brown’s “What Ifs” (Oct. 28, 2017).

“Five” is McCreery’s ninth charted Country Airplay title. He debuted on the list in 2011 with the No. 15-peaking “I Love You This Big” and followed with “The Trouble With Girls” and “Water Tower Town,” which peaked at Nos. 17 and 38, respectively, in 2012. McCreery’s next two proper singles became his first two top 10s, both in 2014: “See You Tonight” (No. 8) and “Feelin’ It” (No. 10). One additional single, “Southern Belle,” McCreery’s last for his original label (Interscope/Mercury), peaked at No. 45 in 2016.

“Five” is the lead single from McCreery’s third studio full-length, Seasons Change (March 16), his first for Triple Tigers. He co-wrote all the songs on the 11-track album, which was produced by Rogers and Aaron Eshuis.

McCreery has earned two No. 1s on Top Country Albums. His first set after winning Idol, Clear as Day, opened atop the ranking dated Oct. 22, 2011 (with

197,000 sold), and spent six weeks at No. 1. His follow-up, See You Tonight, arrived atop the list dated Nov. 2, 2013 ( 52,000), and led for one week. In between, he jingled to No. 2 with Christmas With Scotty McCreery, (Nov. 3, 2012; 41,000 sold).

REXHA TIES ‘GIRL’ RECORD Bebe Rexha and Florida Georgia Line’s pop/country crossover hit “Meant to Be” (Warner Bros./Big Machine Label Group) leads Hot Country Songs for a 13th week. On Country Airplay, the collaboration

hits a new high, rising 16-15, up 24 percent to 17.1 mil-lion in audience.

When it logged its 11th week at No. 1, the track passed Taylor Swift’s “We Are Never Ever Getting Back To-gether” (from 2012 and 2013) for the most weeks atop Hot Country Songs for a title by a solo female in the chart’s 59-year history. “Meant” now matches Little Big Town’s “Girl Crush” (2015) for the most weeks at No. 1 for a song featuring lead female vocals.

‘GOOD’ NEWS Luke Bryan banks his 25th Hot Country Songs top 10, and 24th in succession (counting singles promoted to country radio and excluding holiday fare), as “Most People Are Good” (Capitol Nashville) rises 12-10 in its ninth week on the list.

Starting with 2008’s No. 10-peaking “Country Man,” Bryan’s second Coun-try Airplay top 10, all of his official singles have reached the top tier. He enjoys the third-longest active top 10 streak, after Keith Urban (38) and Carrie Underwood (26).

‘END’ BEGINS Cole Swindell boasts the top debut on Country Airplay as “Break Up in the End” (Warner Bros./Warner Music Nashville) launches at No. 28 with 6.8 million first-week audience impressions. The first single from Swindell’s upcoming album marks his second-highest arrival on Country Airplay: “You Should Be Here” started at No. 26 on Jan. 2, 2016, and led for three weeks that April.

MUSIC NOTESThe Grand Ole Opry has a handful of major dates on the books for the month of March. Larry Gatlin returns as host for the annual Opry Country Classics series of Thursday shows launching March 1 at Nashville’s Ryman Auditorium. The opening edition falls on the 50th anniversary of Johnny Cash’s wedding to June Carter Cash, and songs by the Man in Black anchor the set list for a lineup that includes John Carter Cash, Mark Collie and Mandy Barnett. Chris Janson will officially be inducted as the newest Opry member on March 20. And Charlie Daniels marks 10 years of Opry membership by performing March 27, two months after his official anniversary, which was Jan. 19.

Reba McEntire signed up to announce nominees for the 53rd annual Academy of Country Music Awards on CBS This Mor ning and Facebook Live af ter 8 a.m. ET on March 1. Nancy O’Dell will unveil the remainder on ETOnline.com. McEntire takes the role at a time when the ACM has yet to announce the host of the April 15 awards. Di-erks Bentley revealed during Country Radio Seminar that he and Luke Bryan would not be returning. McEntire has hosted 17 times between 1986-2012.

A jukebox musical that incorporates the songs of Dean Dillon is in development through writer-producer Dewey Moss (Death of the Persian Prince, The Crusade of Connor Stephens). Tennessee Whiskey The Musical borrows its title from a Dillon composition made famous by George Jones and revived by Chris Stapleton, and weaves a storyline of addiction and redemption. Details for the public launch have yet to be determined, though it’s likely to include performances of Pam Tillis’ “Spilled Perfume,” Jim Ed Brown & Helen Cornelius’ “Lying in Love With You” and such George Strait singles as “The Chair,” “Unwound,” “Ocean Front Property” and “Here for a Good Time.”

Ashley Monroe’s fourth album, Sparrow, is due April 20 through Warner Music Nashville. Recorded at historic RCA Studio A, the album was produced by Dave Cobb (Chris Stapleton, Zac Brown Band). A video for the moody first-revealed track, “Hands On You,” can be seen here.

BILLBOARD COUNTRY UPDATE FEBRUARY 26, 2018 | PAGE 14 OF 20

Page 15: Country Update - billboard.com · “It’s hard to get too competitive about it when it all ends up going in the same bank account,” he says. ... who recently signed with Sony

When Trent Harmon faced 1,000 music and broadcast executives at a Country Radio Seminar (CRS) showcase on Feb. 7, he was under pressure. He hadn’t appeared on a Billboard country singles chart in 10 months since “There’s a Girl” ended its run on the charts dated April 16, 2017. He was about to introduce an extremely personal new single in front of an influential audience, and the electronic keyboard wouldn’t make a sound.

He stood there in the awkwardness, offered a bit of patter to fill time, then delivered a hair-raising performance that earned an instant standing ovation.

“How do you act in that situation?” says Harmon rhetorically. “Just be cool, but it’s hard to be cool in those moments. It’s really hard.”

Especially given the weight of the song. The gut-ripping “You Got ’Em All” came straight out of a horrendously difficult year. Harmon’s former label, Dot, folded, and Core Media Group, the company that owns 19 Entertainment and American Idol, filed a Chapter 11 restructuring plan that left Harmon in limbo. Just as the fog over his business began to lift, girlfriend Kathleen Couch announced in a phone call on June 4 — as Harmon was about to go onstage in Portland, Ore. — that she was heading to Thailand for a work opportunity.

“The only thing that I hear is, ‘I’m moving to Thailand to teach forever,’ ” recalls Harmon. “I think I just let her go. I said, ‘Well, great. Have a great time.’ ”

Two mornings later, Harmon found himself back in Nashville, emotionally fragile, drained from the travel back to town, apparently single and ready to cancel a songwriting session at the Word Entertainment office of Justin Ebach (“Sleep Without You,” “Singles You Up”). Ebach talked him into keeping the appointment, suggesting that songwriters are often their most productive when they’re uncomfortable.

“Those are usually the days where the devil is trying to get you not to write,” says Ebach. “Because something’s ‘on’ that day.”

Harmon spilled his guts to Ebach and co-writer Jordan Minton, and after pursuing several other ideas, Ebach pulled out “You Got ’Em All,” a song he had started about six weeks before. He had the opening line to the chorus — “Girl, I’m still waiting on life to begin again” — and he knew where the key twists to the title belonged. The opening verse would address the woman’s dreams, ending with the wish “I hope you got ’em all.” The chorus would close with the guy’s shattered dreams: “I feel like all my better days are gone/And I think you got ’em all.” And the bridge would cinch it with a reflection on all the memories they had built when they were together: “I hope you got ’em all.”

“We had some of the melody stuff and those kind of things, then we went into Trent’s story, and he was like, ‘This is me, this is how I feel right now,’ ” remembers Ebach. “Then it became Trent’s song. We really just plugged his story in.”

The trio finished the song in about 45 minutes, breaking periodically for an emotional respite.

“We would stop writing for five minutes and just kind of talk and hang out,” says Minton. “When you’re writing a song that’s that heavy, you’ve just got to breathe for a few minutes.”

Once it was completed, Ebach produced three different demos for it, ranging from a stripped-down piano/vocal approach to a full arrangement with a string section. He eventually turned in all three versions to his publisher, though he felt the bare-bones rendition was best.

“What needs to be focused on is the vocal and the lyric,” says Ebach. “When you capture that right, honestly, you don’t need to add a lot of elements.”

That was the setup when Harmon sang “You Got ’Em All” live for the first time on Oct. 19 at his alma mater, the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville.

With the piano mostly plunking out the spare chords, the performance was posted online, and Crouch — the woman who had inspired the song — spotted it over in Thailand.

“She may have sent me an email,” notes Harmon, “that just said, ‘New song tonight. Wow.’ ”

Before the year was up, Harmon’s label issues were resolved, and he re-signed to Big Machine Label Group. President/CEO Scott Borchetta pegged “You Got ’Em All” as the single that would reintroduce Harmon.

“The song just killed me,” says Borchetta. “That lyric in the chorus — you know, ‘All my better days are gone/and I think you got ’em all’ — if that doesn’t connect and if that’s not a hit, I’ll never produce another record.”

Borchetta did, in fact, co-produce the song with Jimmy Robbins (Canaan Smith, RaeLynn) on Dec. 20 at Ocean Way Studios. They booked the date for just the one song, which — like Harmon’s CRS performance — meant working under the gun.

“There’s some pressure with Scott being in the room,” admits Robbins, “but at the same time, there’s a lot of good that goes along with that. If he likes it, there’s none of that ‘Well, I hope they like it’ feeling when you turn in a record.”

David Dorn slipped the single-note piano motif into several parts of the arrangement, and the band created an instrumental arc that built slowly without stealing attention from Harmon’s lead. Drummer Nir Z f licked a shaker in the background

of the intro, but never hit the toms until verse two. Derek Wells wedged in a pivotal four-bar guitar solo before the break, temporarily taking the spotlight from Harmon.

“There wasn’t any exhale in the song between the second chorus and the bridge, so I really pushed to get that proper guitar solo in there,” says Borchetta.

His history as a mentor to Harmon on the 2016 season of American Idol helped, too. Crouch and Harmon had reunited, and she was actually in the control room as he took on the final vocal. The first attempt was passable, but Borchetta knew he had a better take in him. Borchetta asked him to take a couple minutes, return to the emotional state he was in when he wrote “You Got ’Em All” and try again. With the lights turned low and Crouch in the background, Harmon nailed it on that second pass.

“You can hear a switch flip between take one and take two,” says Robbins. “He just went there.”

Harmon did it again at the CRS performance, finding the song’s emotional hot spot despite the disruptive piano malfunction and the pressure of an industry audience.

“I felt like I had never heard the song before, even as someone that wrote it,” says Minton. “I was just blown away.”

Big Machine officially released it to radio that afternoon, and it topped the New & Active chart dated Feb. 25, hinting at the possibilities for “You Got ’Em All.” Harmon hopes it cements a bigger place in the genre. And he similarly hopes it’s a stepping stone for him and Crouch in whatever future they might have.

“I didn’t want her to go have a great time and me be here blue and miserable,” says Harmon of her experiences in Thailand. “But she had a great time, enough that she’s going back. She’s going to do her thing, and I’m going to tour and do music. We don’t really want to be with anybody else, but we’re not going to hold each other back, either. It’s a good place, just uncharted territory.”

Meanwhile, expect “You Got ’Em All” to be charting soon.

Country Indicator

CHARTS LEGENDRANKINGSCountry Airplay is ranked by total audience impressions for the week ending Sunday based on monitored airplay of 148 stations by Nielsen BDS. Audience totals on the chart are derived, in part, using certain Arbitron Inc. copyrighted Persons 12+ audience estimates (under license © 2018, Arbitron Inc.) Country Indicator is tabulated using reported playlists and Nielsen BDS-monitored airplay at 106 stations, ranked by total plays.

BULLETSl Awarded on Country Airplay to titles gaining audience or remaining flat from the previous week. A song will also receive a bullet if its percentage loss in audience does not exceed the percentage of monitored

station downtime for the format. Titles that decline in audience but increase in detections will also receive a bullet if the total audience erosion for the week does not exceed 3%. Bullets are awarded on Country Indicator to titles gaining plays or remaining flat from the previous week.

TIESOn Country Airplay, if two songs are tied in total audience, the song with the larger increase in audience is placed first. On Country Indicator, if two songs are tied in total plays, the song with the larger increase in plays is placed first.

RECURRENTSOn Country Airplay, descending titles below No. 10 in either audience or detections are moved to recurrent after 20 weeks, provided that they are not still

gaining enough audience points to bullet or if they rank below No. 10 and post a third consecutive week of (non-bulleted) audience decline, regardless of total chart weeks. On Country Indicator, descending, non-bulleted titles below No. 10 are moved to recurrent after 20 weeks or if they post a third consecutive week of decline in plays after 10 weeks.

HOT SHOT DEBUTAwarded to the highest-ranking new entry on Country Airplay and Country Indicator, respectively.

MOST ADDEDThe total number of new adds officially reported to Billboard by each reporting station, or by an automatic-add threshold (seven plays for the first time in a chart tracking week, according to Nielsen BDS) for stations that do not report adds.

MOST INCREASED AUDIENCE/PLAYSMost Increased Audience on Country Airplay and Most Increased Plays on Country Indicator list the songs with the greatest week-to-week increases in total audience or plays, respectively.

AIRPOWERAwarded on Country Airplay to titles ranking inside top 20 in plays and audience rankings for the first time, with increases in both plays and audience.

BREAKERAwarded on Country Airplay to titles achieving airplay (at least one detection) at 60% of reporting stations for the first time.

O n M a r c h 4 , 1978 , Wa y l o n Jennings and Willie Nelson’s

“Mammas Don’t Let Your Babies Grow Up to Be Cowboys” began a fou r-week com ma nd on Hot Country Songs. The smash, writ-ten by Ed Bruce and his wife, Patsy, was released from Waylon & Willie, which ruled Top Country Albums for 11 weeks. (Bruce's solo version of the song hit No. 15 in 1976.)

The song became Jennings and Nelson’s second of three No. 1s as a duo, between “Good Hearted Woman” (three weeks in 1976) and

“Just to Satisfy You” (two, 1982). The

icons boast 16 and 22 total trips to No. 1, respectively. “Cowboys” won the pair the 1979 Grammy Award for best country performance by a duo or group. The biggest of their collaborations, it ranked at No. 36 on Billboard’s Greatest of All Time Country Songs chart in 2015.

Jennings died at age 64 in 2002, a year after being inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame. Nelson, who was inducted in 1993, remains a dominant chart and touring force. His latest album, Last Man Standing, is due April 27, two days before he turns 85. —JIM ASKER
