Banoffee pie is a favorite in theUK and the name comesfrom a combination of the

words banana and toffee. My hus- band and I visited England severalyears ago with friends and we wereadmonished by a grouchy pub owner for asking what banoffee pie was. Iwas too intimidated to order it there;so I came home and decided to makeit myself. I sure am glad I did, it’sone of my favorite desserts now!

Claremont Pie Festival/2016 5

Annika Corbin, co-owner of ILike Pie Bake Shop along withher husband Rob, has always

loved baking. She learned to bake fromher mother and grandmother andattended the American Institute of Baking in Kansas, where she gainedknowledge of running a production-style bakery.

Even before their pie shop opened in November 2012, Ms. Corbin was dreaming of holding a PieFestival in the Claremont Village. Why the Clare-mont Village? A few years ago, Mr. Corbin’s career opportunity re-located their family to Californiawhere they fell in love with Claremont. It felt themost like home to them and their family of threedaughters. Another job transfer for Rob forced themto re-locate again, this time to Washington, DC in2012. But missing Claremont, they took a leap of faith and returned to California to open a pie shop.

Ms. Corbin attended the Great American Pie Fes-tival in Celebration in Florida, where she gainedmuch of her insight. Its sponsoring organization,American Pie Council, provided her with informa-tion needed to run such an event.

In August 2013, her dream came true when this

first-ever pie-oriented event was held in Clare-mont. What surprised her most about that first

event was the turnout. About 40 pies were enteredin the baking contest, over 30 people of all ageswere in the apron parade/contest and the pie-eatingcontest was full.

In the two years since, attendance at the festivalhas continued to grow. This year, two blocks onSecond Street adjacent to Indian Hill Boulevard will

be closed to accommodate more vendors, a foodcourt and a first-time car show. Ms. Corbin has co-ordinated a wide variety of baking, food and bever-age demos to be held throughout the day in thePublic Plaza.

Live entertainment will be offered this year, aswell as a sidewalk sale.

There will be more sites selling pie and, of course, a complimentary pie buffet will be held atPublic Plaza after contest winners are announced.

Guests are once again encouraged to collect pierecipe cards at 21 businesses. Don’t miss the annual

pie-eating contest at noon for which Annika’s teamwill be baking over 30 pies!

Along with her tireless energy, her committee of six with boundless energy and all the volunteers’unwavering enthusiasm, the fourth annual Clare-mont Village Pie Festival is prepped and ready toserve a day full of family-oriented fun.

I Like Pie Bake Shop is located at 175 N. IndianHill Blvd., #102B, Claremont. For more informa-tion about the bake shop, call (909) 621-5152 or visit ilikepiebakeshop.com.

Pie-eating contest

The annual pie-eatingcontest is one of themost anticipated events

for contestants and specta-tors alike at the Claremont PieFestival.

The contest will be held on the patiooutside city hall council chambers, located at 225 West Second Street (nextto Kids Korner).

Pie-loving contestants may beginsigning up on the patio at 10:30 a.m. in

three age categories: 7-10 years, 11-14years and 15 years and older.

Size of cream pies varies dependingupon age group: mini pies for 7 to 10 year olds, 8-inch pies for 11 to 14 year olds and10-inch pies for 15 years and older.

By the time they’ve reached a certain point, the contestants’ faces seem to saythose pies appear much larger than theyactually are.

At that point, all guests can really see is pie on their faces since they are notallowed to use their hands. The contestantwho finishes their pie first wins. Judgeswill use a scale to determine the winner if there is a tie.

Helpful hint: Sign up as close to 10:30

a.m. as possible. Limited space isavailable. It’s free to participate.

Claremont Pie Festival/2016 11

Aselection of vintage apronsfrom the 1940s and ‘50s will beon display at the Claremont Pie

Festival on Saturday, March 19 from 11a.m. to 4 p.m. near the southeast corner

of Harvard and Bonita avenues.A collection of 15 to 20 mostly handmade

gingham aprons—and a dozen other plain and fancyaprons—will be featured in the “Apron Strings”exhibit. Each gingham apron has distinctive hand-embroidered designs decorating the skirt. Some of the fancier and seasonal aprons were saved for entertaining and holidays. The collection belongs toClaremont resident Joan Bunte, who was a long-time business owner in the Village.

“Every apron has a story,” Ms. Bunte said. Inaddition to protecting precious dresses underneaththe aprons, they provided the housewife with acontainer for carrying eggs from the henhouse, drying children’s tears, carrying in vegetables from

the garden and apples from the trees. Copies of a poem “Beloved Apron” will be available at theexhibit. If you have a favorite apron story, please

bring a copy to share.Ms. Bunte encourages guests to wear an apron

and enter the apron contest to win gift certificatesfrom Village merchants. For more information, contact Ms. Bunte at [email protected].
