IF YOU GO ‘Legends in Concert’ plays Sept. 5 to Nov. 18 in the Legends in Concert Theater in Bally’s Atlantic City, Boardwalk and Park Place. Showtimes are 8 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and Sunday as well as 7:30 and 10 p.m. on Saturday and a special matinee each Wednesday at 3 p.m. Tickets are $32.50 for adults and $16.25 for chil- dren and can be purchased by visiting www.ticketmaster.com, calling (800) 736- 1420 or at Bally’s Box Office. When Chris Van Dahl met Steven Tyler, it was one of those Marx Brothers mo- ments. Van Dahl, who has portrayed the Aerosmith front man for much of his adult life, co-hosted the red- carpet portion of a sobriety event where Tyler gave guitarist Slash an award. “Steven walked half way down the car- pet, turned and looked at me. It was defi- nitely a moment. We were nose to nose. He said, ‘It feels good, doesn’t it.’ I never got it until we were face to face.” The ‘‘it’’ was the uncanny resemblance Van Dahl bears to Tyler. The long hair. The big lips. When Van Dahl hit junior high in Michigan, the comparisons poured in. “That kid looks like Steven Tyler,” they said. But anyone can grow their hair long. The resemblance that landed Van Dahl a spot in “Legends in Concert” at Bally’s was the voice. “We have a lot in common to begin with, so it was not a real stretch. It’s been a natu- ral evolution rather than me sitting down and studying Tyler,” he said. Van Dahl as Steven Tyler debuts at Bal- ly’s on Sept. 6, joining more lookalike per- formers portraying Elvis, Michael Jack- son, Donna Summer and Lady Gaga for a fall run through mid November. All performers sing with their own nat- ural voices to a live band in this show, which has established a residency in Bal- ly’s. The show features a new state-of-the- art set and production elements including sound, lighting and signature video projec- tion that replicates the iconic superstars. “ ‘Legends in Concert’ has continued to captivate guests and deliver top-notch en- tertainment to Bally’s Atlantic City. I’m ex- tremely excited to see the Steven Tyler tribute and watch as this new cast dazzles audiences,” said Kevin Ortzman, senior vice president and general manager for Bally’s and Showboat Atlantic City. Unlike Bostonian Tyler, Van Dahl grew up in Detroit and other parts of Michigan. He’s been an Aerosmith fan since child- hood, listening to the band on his older brother’s records. While Van Dahl used his Tyleresque stature to front Aeromyth, an Aerosmith tribute band, he had more on his plate than tribute artist. He has written, recorded and toured with a number of successful bands including Cherry Street, L.A. Guns and Pack of Wolves, which he co-founded with former Kid Rock lead guitarist Ken- ny Olson. He also played with Aerosmith alumnus Jimmy Crespo. “When I got the phone call to do Aero- myth, I was in Michigan doing an album as part of Pack of Wolves,” he said. Aeromyth has toured internationally, but stateside, the tribute band played fre- quently in Las Vegas, picking up corporate gigs as well as casino ones. At one such cor- porate event, Van Dahl met Damian Bran- tley, who does Michael Jackson in Leg- ends. ‘LEGENDS’ OF THE FALL Lookalikes portray popular performers in autumn concert at Bally’s Chris Van Dahl (above and right) portrays Steve Tyler of Aerosmith during ‘Legends in Concerts’ show at Bally’s. The latest film to come out of AtlanticCity mixes humor and horror as theforces of good save the resort and thestate from an invasion of zombies.

Oh yeah, “Bernie andGes” is a cartoonwhose title characters are a pro surferand his faithful dog. Bernie’s the dog andhe talks (voiced by actor Mike Anthony).Ges is AndrewGesler, a real life pro surf-er from Ocean City. He talks, too.

Gesler also co-owns Dark Fall Produc-tionswithAlexDePhillipo, ofMargate. Inaddition to “Bernie and Ges,” the compa-ny produced a well-received local surffilm, “Dark Fall.”

“Bernie and Ges” runs 21minutes andholds its world premiere Saturday nightat the House of Blues in Showboat. Thescreening will be followed by the bandT.S.O.L., a punk band that provided someof the music for the film.

The creators of “Dark Fall,” which en-listed local cartoonist Drew Toonz as theanimator, sees this as a calling card for atelevision series.

“This isourpilot.Hopefully, thefirstofmany episodes,” DePhillipo said.

Because DePhillipo and Gesler madetheirmarkwitha surfmovie, andbecauseGesler is a surfer, the cartoon mixes insome live surfing footage. The film tooktwo and a half months to complete, work-ing every day.

The film pokes fun at the “JerseyShore” characters portrayed in the MTVseries.

“Bernie’s character in the cartoon iswildly and hilariously outside of the box,but what better way to get back at thestereotype ‘The Jersey Shore’ has left ourawesome state than with some good old-fashioned comedy and man’s best friendat my side,” Gesler said.

It’s a case of art imitating life, he said.“Our lives are kind of abstract as it is

and in this case, real life is the perfectmuse. Bernie and Ges is something I liveevery day. Bernie is my rescue dog, andhe is an amazing character in real life.

“We did a couple of test runs earlierthis year of something like this and theywent reallywell.Wemove around the fur-niture and it sort of feels like you are in afriend’s living room watching the fight,”said Howard Weiss, regional director ofnightlife, strategy and development forthe Eastern Division of Caesars Enter-tainment.

That’s not all that’s new, Weiss said. Anew drink menu will debut in about sixweeks.

When Cage Fury Fighting Champion-ships returns to Borgata Hotel Casino andSpa on Aug. 24, four titles will be up forgrabs in this mixed martial arts competi-tion, including thewelterweight crownbe-longing to George Sullivan. Sullivan, whowon the title in April, takes on Tenyeh“Skinny Man” Dixon.

“I’m training harder for this fight be-cause keeping the belt means a lot morethan winning it,” Sullivan said. “Everyonealways says it’s easy towin it andharder to

keep it, so that just motivates me more.”Sullivan likes his chances against Dix-

on. “I think he is going to be in for a rudeawakening. I really feelmy size andpowerwill be too much for him.”

This marks Dixon’s debut with CFFCand he arrives with a three-fight winningstreak. “I haven’t felt this happy andmoti-vated for a fight in my MMA career in avery long time. As far as George is con-cerned, I have the upmost respect for him.Make nomistake at all, failure is not an op-

tion. It’s win however I can,” he said. One of the other three title bouts pits

undefeated prospect TimWilliams againstUFC veteran David Branch for the vacantCFFCmiddleweight crown.

“I'm a huge fan of both Timmy andDave”, said CFFC president Rob HaydakJr. “They exemplify what it means to be atrue professional. Both guys are arguablytwoof thebestmiddleweights in theworldoutside theUFC.We are elated at the pros-pect of recognizing either Timmy or Dave

as our newCFFCmiddleweight champion. This fight alone will be worth the price ofadmission.”

Current CFFC bantamweight champi-on, Aljamain “Aljo” Sterling will try tokeep his perfect record intact when he de-fends his title for the second time againstSidemar “Sedico” Honorio. And Sean San-tella will try to continue his flyweight suc-cess against Evan Velez.

Use of the Atlantic City Convention &Visitor Authority’s website,www.doatlanticcity.com, provides a posi-tive picture. The site logged more than440,000 unique visitors in July, a 20 per-cent increase from last July. Year-to-date2012 figures are 24 percent higher thanthe same period in 2011. New visitors tothe site are up 16 percent from last Julyand up 23 percent year-to-date. The sitealso received more than 1,200 new re-quests for the ACCVA’s electronic news-letters and more than 4,000 requests forvisitor guides, both up substantially fromthe prior year.

TheACCVA’sFacebookpageproduced30,000 new“Likes” this July as opposed to1,900 in July 2011. Total “Likes” to datehave climbed by 428 percent year-to-dateover the same period in 2011. Officials at-tribute the surge to a combination of apopular Facebook ticket give-away con-test and the new “DoAC”marketing cam-paign.

The authority’s Visitor Welcome Cen-ters on the Atlantic City Expressway andin Boardwalk Hall report serving almost82,000 visitors so far this year, a sevenpercent gain over the same time frame in2011. The professional information coun-selors also answered more than 6,000 in-

quiriesbyphoneyear-to-date,a15percentrise increase over year-to-date 2011.

The upward swing in July comes in amonth with two fewer weekend days.Having July 4 fall on a Wednesday alsohurt the potential for a four-dayweekend.

Unaudited figures from the South Jer-sey Transportation Authority report thatscheduled deplanements at the AtlanticCity International Airport are up a littleover 2 percent year-to-date. While AirTran discontinued service earlier thisyear, Spirit Airlines added capacity.

“It’s important to realize that aspectsof Atlantic City other than gambling re-main highly popular,” said Jeff Vasser, president of the ACCVA, “Our restau-rants arebustling.Ournightclubs arema-jor draws for a younger crowd that somepeople don’t associate with Atlantic City. The showrooms have been bringing anamazing assortment of entertainment, with the major concert tours makingstops at BoardwalkHall and other venuesaround the city.

“Hotel business is very strongthroughout theyear, showing that visitorsare staying longer toexperienceall theat-tractions and activities we’ve added overthe last few years.”

The figures quoted above and othersare available in the monthly Tourism Ba-rometer, available online at http://www.doatlanticcity.com/about/stats.aspx.

In the 1991 film, “Doc Hollywood,” Mi-chael J. Fox plays a doctor on his way topractice in Beverly Hills when he getssentenced toworkata small townhospitalafter a traffic accident.

Hardly the stuff that engenders rockstar status, but you have to admit thename is catchy. CertainlyBrian Shepherddid. He grabbed the name for his band in2007.

“I was browsing the TV guide one dayand saw the movie ‘Doc Hollywood’ andthought it was pretty appropriate for us.Also, we are pretty entertaining onstage,so everything kind of just fit perfectlywith the name,” he said in a phone inter-view.

A catchy name is just one of the ele-ments Shepherd says separates themfrom the other bands vying to be heard atlounges across Atlantic City.

“We've carved ourselves a good nicheon thescenewith theco-frontingmaleandfemale lead vocals,” he said. In this case, the leads are Matt Cannon and ClaudiaMastriana.

He calls the six-pieceDocHollywooda“party cover band.”

“We pretty much cover everythingfrom Neil Diamond to Katy Perry, sothere’s a broad spectrum of music thatcanappeal to all agegroups. Currentlyweare working hard to add more dance popstuff for the kids, so we can stay on top ofeverything,” he said.

The band enjoys a following fromNewJersey to Maryland to Pennsylvania.

“There is always a certainmagic toAt-lantic City and the patrons are alwaysready for a great time, which makes ourjobmuch easier,” he said. DocHollywoodcan be found at Harrah’s Eden Lounge orthe Golden Nugget. On Aug. 30, the bandplays the Live Bar at the Golden Nugget.

While the band would like to recordoriginal material, the schedule of datesmakes it difficult, especially with jobselsewhere. “The band sometimes doesfeel likea full-timegig forhowhardweallwork at it,” said Shepherd, who has a de-gree from the University of Phoenix andworks in business when he isn’t playingwith the band. In addition to lounges, DocHollywood plays events that include 610

WIP Eagles pregame parties at the Linc, themedeventssuchas togaparties,home-comings at area colleges, and New Year’sEve and Halloween parties.

But the band has a selection of studioand live covers available on facebook(www.facebook.com/dochollywoodrock-su) and reverbnation (www.reverbna-tion.com/dochollywoodrocksu)

“We worked with a great engineer atBrady Sound Studios inWoodlyn, Pa., andposted some live tracks from our show atthe Rehoboth Beach Bandstand whichwas a great family-vibe outdoor experi-ence for us.’’

Shepherd grew up in Phillipsburg,Warren County, across the river fromEaston, Pa. “My parents always had a lotof 45 records lying around. When I wasmaybe around 12, I remember my sistersused to blare the 8-track stereos with ev-erything from Bob Dylan to Ted NugentandZeppelin.Maybe that’swheremy lovefor playing guitar started.”
