Emergency Medical Responder Course Description The Emergency Medical Responder (EMR) course is an entry-level emergency medical provider course that will prepare individuals for employment or a volunteer position in a variety of pre-hospital, industrial and first responder settings. The successful completion of an approved EMR course can be a pre-requisite to pursuing training as a fire fighter and many law enforcement programs. The INHS EMR course is designed to provide participants with the basic knowledge and skills to manage many medical and trauma-related emergencies. Upon successful completion of this course, graduates are eligible to seek national certification as an Emergency Medical Responder through the National Registry of EMTs. This Washington State Department of Health, Office of Community Health Systems “Approved Course” has been designed by INHS to meet or exceed the National Standard Curriculum for Emergency Medical Responder, as developed by the United States Department of Transportation, National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and amended by the State of Washington. Objectives

• Recognize the seriousness of the patient’s condition or extent of injuries to assess requirements for emergency medical care.

• Administer appropriate emergency medical care for life threatening injuries relative to airway, breathing and circulation.

• Perform safely and effectively the expectations of the job description.

Course Content

Required Hours: • Classroom Hours: 60 • Clinical Observation (ER): 12 • Internship (Field): 12

Total Required Hours: 84

Eligibility Requirements

Participants must: • Be 17 years of age at the time of enrollment. • Be physically capable of performing the

essential duties of an Emergency Medical Responder.

• Hold a current CPR course completion card at the American Heart Association “Healthcare Provider” level or the American Red Cross “CPR for the Professional Rescuer” level.

Application Process

You may apply for admission into the Emergency Medical Responder Course by completing the application available online. The application deadline is two weeks prior to the start of the course. A maximum of 24 students will be accepted on a first-come-first-serve basis.

• All tuition must be paid in full 2 weeks prior to class unless other arrangements are made.

Testing and Certification

Upon successful completion of the course, students will take the practical skills examination which is recognized by the Washington State Department of Health, Office of Community Health Systems. Upon successful completion of the practical skills examination the student will receive a certificate of completion from the INHS Health Training Emergency Medical Responder Course and will then be eligible to take the National Registry of EMTs computer adaptive test (CAT).

Upon successful completion of the National Registry of EMTs computer adaptive test the student will be eligible to apply for certification through the State of Washington.
