Objective This course will explore music and related literature as practiced in the Western hemisphere from the Middle Ages to the current trends of today. Presentations and material will focus primarily on Classical music, although all significant styles and idioms (such as Jazz, Pop, and Rock) will also be discussed. Topics will include the basic elements of music, general stylistic ideals of recognized historical periods, and general biographical information regarding noted composers as well as significant musical compositions from each historical period. Students will develop specific listening skills to enhance their enjoyment of all types of music. Some music background is helpful but NOT essential for this course.   • Grading Policy (approximate calculation based on the formula below; all Unit Exams, as well as the Final Listening Exam, are required)

    60% - Six UNIT Exams (each consisting of 20 multiple choice questions and three audio examples requiring essay-style descriptive responses);

    10% - Attendance Score; beginning with a perfect score (100%), 3% will be subtracted for each unattended online or in-person class;

    20% - Final Listening Exam (10 audio examples requiring essay-style descriptive responses);

    5% - Assignments; up to five simple drill/review worksheets will be periodically issued throughout the semester;

    5% - Class Participation and Attitude; NOTE: Cell phones and other electronic devices are NOT permitted during in-person class presentations unless approved by the instructor!
