Environmentally Sustainable
Development1. Critical resource stocks and ecological functionsmust be safeguarded
2. Depletion and deterioration must be kept within
acceptable levels or safe margins3. Losses of natural capital1must be compensated
for
4. Since the flow of services from ecosystemsrequires that they function as whole systems, thestructure and diversity of the system areimportant components of natural capital.
M1L1S10
1 Natural capital is the extension of the economic notion of capital (i.e. manufactured means of production)
to environmental goods and services. A functional definition of capital in general is: "a stock that yields aflow of valuable goods or services into the future".

Conclusions
Sustainable development is an almost universallyaccepted goal
Assessment by systematically collecting and judginginformation can help determine progress
Earth Summit in 1992 called for all GOs to produceNational Strategies for Sustainable Development (NSSD)by 2002. This was reiterated at the World Summit forSustainable Development in Johannesburg in 2002.
The National Information Focal Point for NSSD inMalaysia is EPU/ENRES
An early experience with Sustainable Development is
represented by a number of projects in Malaysia M1L1S12
