4 Rationale for the inclusion ofthe course/module in theprogramme

It focuses on the strategic management of organisational knowledge and innovation. The conceptual framework of the course is an evolutionary process perspective onknowledge-based strategy and innovation. Innovation, in this context, is defined as anew way of doing business or satisfying customer need. The fundamental ideasunderlying this evolutionary perspective are (1) that a firms competitive strategyemerges from its technological and knowledge competences and capabilities, (2) thatknowledge-based strategy is shaped by external (environmental) and internal(organisational) forces, and (3) that the enactment of a knowledge-based strategy, through the experience it generates, serves to further develop the firms innovativecompetences and capabilities. Within this evolutionary perspective, the course drawson strategic management, economics, and organisation theory for analytical tools toaddress important challenges faced by managers in knowledge-based firms.
