GENERAL COURSE REPORT INTER STATE YOUTH EXCHANGE PROGRAMME

INSTITUTE: JAWAHAR INSTITUTE OF MOUNTAINEERING & WINTER SPORTS (JIM & WS) PAHALGAM VENUE: SANASAR (J&K) REPORT ON: INTER STATE YOUTH EXCHANGE PROGRAMME COURSE SERIAL NO: 63 DURATION OF COURSES: 10 DEC 2011 TO 25 DEC 2011 (15 DAYS ) GENERAL 1. Jawahar Institute of Mountaineering and winter Sports (JIM & WS) is a joint

venture between Ministry of Defence, Government of India and Department of Tourism

Govt. of J&K. Headquarter of the Institute is located at Nunwan, Pahalgam and sub

centers at Bhaderwah (Doda), Sanasar (near Patnitop), Shey (Leh) and one adhoc sub

centre at Gulmarg for skiing courses. Over last 29 years the Institute has excelled in

different adventure activities like Mountaineering, Skiing, Paragliding, Rescue, water

rafting, short term adhoc adventure courses and Mountain & Tourist Guide courses.

2. 50 youth (35 boys & 15 girls) from parts of the country reported to JIM & WS,

Sub Centre Sanasar 10 Dec 2011.The Scheduled events of these youth

commenced the next day after issue of clothing and equipment. All the youth

participated and showed keen interest in the youth Exchange Programme.

Nominal roll of the youth of each course is enclosed as Appendix “A”.

INTRODUCTION 3. Jawahar Institute of Mountaineering & Winter Sports, (JIM & WS) conducted Inter

State Youth Exchange Programme w.e.f 10 Dec 2011 to 15 Dec 2011, 15 days at Sub

Centre, Sanasar, sponsored by Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports, New Delhi under

NPYAD, Scheme.

OBJECTIVES 5. (a) Familiarization with environment, family life, social customs of the

people of different parts.

(b) Understanding the common cultural and historical heritage of the

country symbolized in historical monuments.

(c) Understanding problems of people of different regions.

(d) To emblem unity in diversity and a pride in the youth being an Indian.

(e) To inculcate communal harmony amongst different cultural / regional

groups. OPENING ADDRESS 6. Opening address was taken by Col Virinder Singh, Principal, JIM & WS making

the students aware of the well known history of the esteemed Institute JIM &

WS. Students were explained safety and security measures to be observed around

Institute premises. They were also explained the discipline to be observed during event

of this Inter State Youth Exchange Programme.

CONDUCT OF YOUTH EXCHANGE PROGRAMME 7. The youth from different states were put together through cultural programmes,

Seminars and discussions holding informal meets to exchange their views on different

issues related to culture heritage, community views, rituals etc. They also shared their

views on participating in social development projects like education, health and

employment generation. They also got familiarized with regional festivals and the relief

and rehabilitation activities carried out in the state by the Govt e.g Operation

Sadbhavana by Indian Army, health camps and tour of local youth to other states of the

country.

8. Details of aspects covered during the programme are enunciated in subsequent

paras.

(a) Cultural Programmes: To inculcate amongst the youth the spirit of national

integration and communal harmony different creative and innovative cultural activities

were organized in a systematic manner. Stage dramas, dances, musical sessions, tails

were conducted giving them a different regional, religious and linguistic flavours.

(b) Social Exchange: The youth were made to visit surrounding villages, schools

and Institutions to learn the local social agenda and the problems existing in the

communities which posed a significant hurdle in the empowerment of local youth. They

also exchange their views on solving such existing difficulties in the community.

INTRACTION WITH LOCALS

(c) Lectures/Presentations/ Seminars/ Conferences: The following aspects of

subjects were covered in great details in the form lectures / demonstrations / Seminars /

Conferences:

(i) Environmental Awareness (Lecture).

(ii) Unity in diversity (Drama).

(iii) Govt policies on empowerment of the poor (Debate)

(iv) Education system at village level (Informal meets).

(v) Role of Armed forces in J&K (Debate).

(vi) Social Development through cultural reforms (Discussion).

(d) Treks: Youth were trained in trekking. They got familiarized with the equipment

needed while going on long treks. They were taken beautiful places around the area,

enroute they met and conversed with the Gujjars and children, interacting and

exchanging culture which helped them to know the them better.

(e) Recreational activities: Youth were made to take interest to participate in games

like volley ball, badminton, cricket. Through discussions with the instructors they also

got familiarized with adventure sports like skiing, paragliding, water rafting and Para

jumping. They also enjoyed few of the adventure activities like Rock Climbing, River

crossing, Rappelling, Para Gliding etc. The Youth showed keen desire to undergo

training at the institute for the adventure sports in near future.

ACCOMMODATION 9. The accommodation facility was made in Institute huts at Sanasar, with good

lodging and dining facilities.

INSTITUTE HUTS FOOD 10. The participants were provided hygienic and palatable food during the training

with additional energy supplements like fruits, dry fruits, toffees and sweets etc. Hot

food was served with the help of food warmers to keep the food warm & fresh.

TRANSPORT 11. The to and fro transportation to all the participants were provided free of cost to

the course venue by the JIM & WS. Local transportation was also provided during the

Programme free of cost to all the participants.

EQUIPMENT AND CLOTHING 12. The participants were provided with quality clothing gear and equipment for

recreational activities during the programme. They were issued with quality clothing like

t-shirt, sun-cap, Trek-suits, water bottle etc. by the institute.

FIRST AID & MEDICAL COVER 13. Medical cover to participants was provided throughout the programme by JIM &

WS. One Nursing Assistant accompanied the students round the clock to provide First

aid and other necessary medical aid.

FEEDBACK 14. Photo copies of feedback by participants are attached as Appendix ”B”, reflecting standards of training, accommodation and other facilities provided by the

Institute during the programme.

RECOMMENDATIONS

15. It is recommended that more programmes and groups may be sanctioned to JIM

& WS for other adventure activities like Basic, Advance Mountaineering, Mountain

Adventure, Mountain rescue courses, Basic, Intermediate and Advance skiing courses

the year 2012-13 .

GRADUATION CEREMONY 16. The participants presented a colorful cultural programme after completion of

scheduled programme. Beautiful events like singing, Jokes, Drama and mimicry

presented by the participants. The event was followed by the distribution of the

programme badges, certificates and mementoes by Col Virinder Singh, Principal, JIM &

WS.

10 CONCLUSION 17. During the Inter State Youth Exchange Programme the youth coming frm

different states / country were familiarized with local culture and heritage exchanging

social problems, health and poverty issues at village levels in Jammu & Kashmir which

made them to feel for the needs of the locals to come in the main stream of Indian

population and progressive path. This to a greater extend succeeded in developing the

sense of unity in diversity and being one of same cultural and heritage history forming
