Course Description and Learning Outcomes

Course DescriptionThe primary goal of this course is to help students become informed consumers of quantitative information in socialscience research. Emphasis will be placed on understanding basic principles of statistics and learning when and how toapply them.

Learning OutcomesBy the end of this course, you should be able to

explain how statistics are used in social science research to organize quantitative information, test hypotheses,and report research findings;

identify variables in a data set and the level of measurement for each variable;

use various descriptive statistics, tables, and graphs to summarize quantitative information, including data thatyou collect yourself, or data presented to you through different sources;

describe the logic of hypothesis testing procedures and the use of inferential statistics in social research;

use appropriate statistics to answer different research questions and test different hypotheses involving one ortwo variables; and

read with ease basic quantitative information, including tables and graphs, and research "findings," includinghypothesis testing results in academic journals and the general media.

About the Course Author

Course Author — Dr. Hsiao D'AillyEducational Background

Hsiao obtained her BA from Taiwan National NormalUniversity. She completed both her Master's degree inEducation and PhD in Psychology at the University ofWestern Ontario. Hsiao also held a two year SSHRCpost-doctoral fellowship at the Psychology department atUW before coming to Renison.

Current Research

Immigrant adaptation, community-based research, andcross-cultural psychology.

Philosophy of Teaching

Hsiao believes that only "meaningful learning" is true learning. She encourages students to always see the applicationsof their new knowledge in real life situations. Her philosophy of teaching fits well with the constructivist theory oflearning, believing that learning is an active process in which students construct new ideas or concepts based upontheir current and past knowledge.

Hobbies/Interests/Sports

When not involved in research, Hsiao likes to listen to music, play music, read, watch movies, walk with friends, go tonew places, and see new things.

Missed Assignments/Tests/QuizzesContact the instructor as soon as you realize there will be a problem, and preferably within 48 hours, but no more than72 hours, have a medical practitioner complete a Verification of Illness Form.

Email a scanned copy of the Verification of Illness Form to your instructor. In your email to the instructor, provideyour name, student ID number, and exactly what course activity you missed.

Missed Final ExaminationsIf this course has a final exam and if you are unable to write a final examination due to illness, seek medical treatmentand have a medical practitioner complete a Verification of Illness Form. Email a scanned copy to the Centre forExtended Learning (CEL) at [email protected] 48 hours of your missed exam. Make sure youinclude your name, student ID number, and the exam(s) missed. You will be REQUIRED to hand in the originalcompleted form before you write the make-up examination.

After your completed Verification of Illness Form has been received and processed, you will be emailed your alternateexam date and time. This can take up to 2 business days. If you are within 150 km of Waterloo you should be preparedto write in Waterloo on the additional CEL exam dates. If you live outside the 150 km radius, CEL will work with youto make suitable arrangements.
