Course Description and Learning Outcomes

Course Description

Focus is on the issues and foundations of Geographic Information Science. Topics coveredinclude geographic coordinate systems, map projections, mapping quantitative data,compiling data from a variety of sources, and the production of effective maps based onestablished principles of cartographic design.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course, students should be able to:

1. Compare and contrast different classes of maps.2. Identify and distinguish different types of geographic coordinate systems and map

projections.3. Identify and apply the computer-based techniques for the production of quantitative

maps.4. Recognize and apply the principals of map design to the creation and evaluation of

maps.

Peter Deadman is an Associate Professor in the Department of Geography and Environmental Management.He completed his PhD at the University of Arizona, with a focus on modelling common pool resourcemanagement institutions. His current research interests are focused on using advanced geographicinformation technologies to understand land use and resilience in agricultural landscapes. Currently, he isexploring the application of agent based models to understand the connections between agricultural land usepolicy and nutrient loading in Canadian watersheds. He is also examining the application of spatial models toevaluate agricultural irrigation management institutions in southern India. Peter has been teaching thiscartography course since 1998.

He teaches in the Geomatics program, including first year introductory mapmaking, advancedGeographic Information Systems, and the Geoweb and Location-Based Services. Scott MacFarlane is a GIS Specialist in the Mapping, Analysis and Design unit within the Faculty ofEnvironment at the University of Waterloo. He holds a Bachelor of Environmental Studies in geography fromthe University of Waterloo and a diploma in Geographic Information Systems from the College of GeographicSciences in Nova Scotia. He provides support for GIS and mapping technologies for students and researchersin the faculty and works with professors to incorporate contemporary software into courses (such as this one).

Assignments are to be submitted via the LEARN Dropbox by the assignment due date. Noother method of submission is accepted. Any assignments not submitted by the due datewill be given a grade of zero.
