Week 1 Assignments

Zimbardo, P. (2004). Does psychology make a significant difference in our lives? American Psychologist, 59, 339-351.

Sections on Types of articles, Writing style, and Grammar (review as needed) in APA Publication Manual, 5th ed., pp. 7-8, 31-44.

Blooms: 2Completion time: 2.5 hours

5. Any concerns you may have about the course6. Your previous classes or training in psychology7. Your post-graduation plans (new job, graduate school, etc.)

Blooms: 2Completion time: 0.5 hoursGrade: 10

DQ 1

In McBurney’s short essays, you may recognize some of the questions you had as a beginning student of psychology.

Choose one of these essays and describe how your thinking about and understanding of the issue presented in the essay has evolved as a result of what you’ve learned as a psychology major.

Review one peer’s entry and comment on how their description illustrates development of their critical thinking skills.

Blooms: 4-5Completion time: 1 hourGrade: 40

DQ 2

Page 5

In McBurney’s essay, “How Can Psychology be a Science When Every Person is Unique?” he argues that, in spite of our uniqueness, psychology has identified laws of behavior that apply to all individuals.

Think of one concept or principle in psychology that you think meets this criterion of applying to everyone. If it is not universal, describe the circumstances under which the principle does apply. Describe the concept or principle and illustrate it with an example.

Blooms: 4Completion time: 1 hourGrade: 40

DQ 3 (mandatory)

Robert Bjork (2000) argues for the contributions that psychology can make to solving complex individual and societal problems. Philip Zimbardo (2004) highlights significant applications of psychology.

How do you think the profession of psychology is doing at “giving psychology away?” Do you think psychology makes a significant difference in people’s lives? Where (on what problems or issues) do you think psychology should focus its greatest efforts in the next decade?

Assignment: Review paperTopic proposal

Consider Bjork’s (2000) appeal in “Giving away and selling the behavioral sciences” and Zimbardo’s enthusiastic overview of the many applications of psychology.

Based on your interests in psychology, choose a topic to review in a 10-12 page paper.

The topic should apply psychological research to an individual, organizational, or social problem.

In 2 paragraphs, (a) summarize the problem area (be specific in defining the problem) and (b) describe what you already know about it. Submit this proposal to the instructor.

Assignment 5: Final Project: Portfolio

Personal statement; begin to identify / collect Section B work samples

As you near completion of your undergraduate education, you have probably been reflecting on your personal and professional development and goals.

Summarizing so much personal information on paper is not easy, but it’s important. Many employers complain that in interviews and job applications, students do not seem to know how to articulate the skills and strength that they bring to the job.

This essay may be the single most influential component of a job or graduate school application. The statement you write for this portfolio gives you a forum for presenting yourself to the world of employers, graduate schools, scholarship committees and others who want to know something about you.

In preparation for writing the statement, read the section entitled “Preparing Personal Statements” at: http://puffin.creighton.edu/nsafe/APPLICATIONS.htmHere are a few of their suggestions:

Page 8

find and use your voice

use concrete examples of what you’ve done

avoid generalizations, such as “I’m good with people.”

proofread and edit (and ask others to proofread and make suggestions about) your statement to be sure it is free of grammatical and typographical errors.

Follow the link on their site to read Mary Hale Tolar’s excellent Definition of a Personal Statement, or access it directly at: http://puffin.creighton.edu/nsafe/Personal%20Statement.pdf

Your personal statement should be a 2-3 page Word document. Submit your response to the instructor.

Blooms: 2Completion time: 2.5 hours.

Hand washing among health care workers has critical implications for the spread of germs and disease in hospitals and other health care settings. Many studies that attempt to measure the extent of hand washing use the observational method of research. Based on the findings, interventions to increase hand washing (overall, or in particular groups) can be developed and implemented.

In your opinion, to what extent is the use of the observational method appropriate for this kind of research question? What are the limitations of observational studies? Could one conduct a more controlled (i.e., laboratory) study of this problem? Why or why not? Provide reasons and examples to justify your answer.

Blooms: 4Completion time: 1.5 hoursGrade: 40

DQ 2 (mandatory)

Search the literature to find an article written within the last 10 years that cites the Rodin & Langer study. Give the citation for the article and say how it relates to the Rodin & Langer study.

In your opinion, do nursing homes employ the element of personal control to create healthier

environments for their residents? Provide reasons for your answer.

OR: Conduct an Internet search to find an example of a nursing home/institution or community for older adults who don’t require nursing care that promotes itself as providing high quality care. If they make claims about their health and quality of life outcomes for residents, do they present any evidence that they have measured these systematically? Provide the URL for the Web site.

Blooms: Completion time: 1.5 hoursGrade: 40

DQ 3

David Myer’s article answers the question of who is happy and why. What are some of the research challenges in studying happiness that you appreciate after reading this article?

The predictors of happiness Myers identifies have been elucidated through correlational research. How might that limit our understanding of the causes of happiness?

Select one of the predictors of happiness identified in the article, and sketch out a hypothesis that could

be examined through a research study to clarify or extend our understanding of the “roots and fruits” of happiness. Blooms: Completion time: 1.5 hoursGrade: 40

Assignment: Research article critique

Please answer each of the questions listed below in the attachment. Enter your responses after each question using as much space as you need to. Most of the questions require you to apply your knowledge of research methods and statistics (feel free to consult materials from those courses as well as the Internet). Several questions will ask your opinion about certain aspects of the article and have no “right” answers; you just need to explain your thinking.

Assignment 4: Review paper Reference list

Refer to the Assignment # 4 in Week 1 where you chose a topic proposal.

Refine and elaborate the description of your topic chosen in Week 1, based on the feedback you’ve received from your peers and faculty.

Identify at least 10 sources you will use to write the review. One of the articles should be a review of some aspect of your topic, and at least four articles should be empirical studies (that report on an experiment or set of experiments). You may include articles from the popular press, but at least eight of your citations must be from peer-reviewed journals or scholarly books. Submit a list of the citations in the form of an APA-style reference list. Attach the revised topic proposal and a paragraph describing the method you used to identify your sources.

Submit the list and attached paragraphs to the instructor,

Assignment: Final Project Write cover letter (complete 1 or 2)

1. Research post-graduation jobs that interest you and for which you are qualified. Choose one and write a cover letter to the prospective employer. The letter, which should accompany your resume, should summarize why you are interested in the job and what qualifications and skills make you an ideal candidate or match for the position. Limit your letter to one page. Follow this link for advice on writing a cover letter: http://www.uwec.edu/Career/Online_Library/coverletters.htm

OR

2. Research graduate programs that you are interested in and for which your bachelor’s degree has prepared you. Identify at least three people, including professors, advisers, work or internship supervisors who will write letters of recommendation for you. In person or by e-mail, ask

Page 14

them if they would write a strong letter for you.

You may be applying to several different kinds of programs master’s or doctoral, clinical or counseling. Choose one program or type of program and write a letter to one of your references requesting a letter of recommendation for your application to the programs.

In the letter, remind the person of your relationship. Use information like when you worked for them and what you did; what classes you took and the grades you earned.

Then summarize your undergraduate experiences, your strengths and weaknesses, the reasons you are applying to the programs and how they will help you meet your professional goals.

Limit your letter to a one page Word document. For helpful guidelines on the process of applying to graduate schools, see http://hhd.csun.edu/plunk/getting_into_grad_school.doc

Assignment: Review paperPeer edit

Every person has a different style and approach to writing and struggles with some part of the process. Writing is often done collaboratively in many workplaces: Coworkers create or revise documents through multiple drafts that benefit from the combined strengths of the individuals working on them.

In Microsoft Word, the Track Changes feature allows you to edit a document, insert comments, view it in its original form as well as in its final form with each reviewer’s changes highlighted in a different color.

If you are not familiar with these features, go to www.microsoft.com, look under Training, and complete a tutorial. Return your peer’s document to your peer with your comments and tracked changes by Day 4.

Exchange a complete draft of your paper with a peer – to be assigned by the instructor.

You are required to review and lightly edit their paper electronically, using the Track Changes and Insert Comments features in MS Word. “Lightly edit” means to correct grammatical errors and punctuation so that the text reads more clearly. It does not mean changing the author’s "voice,” or rephrasing entire sentences, or restructuring whole paragraphs. If you think these latter changes would benefit the paper, you should suggest them to the author and explain why they would make the text clearer or more convincing.

When you receive your draft from your peer editor, review the comments but do not “Accept Changes” yet! Submit your “marked-up” draft to the instructor.

Library Resources: Argosy University’s core online collection features nearly 21,000 full-text journals and 23,000 electronic books and other content covering all academic subject areas including Business & Economics, Career & General Education, Computers, Engineering & Applied Science, Humanities, Science, Medicine & Allied Health, and Social & Behavior Sciences.  Many titles are directly accessible through the Online Public Access Catalog at http://library.argosyu.edu.  Detailed descriptions of online resources are located at http://library.argosyu.edu/misc/onlinedblist.html.

In addition to online resources, Argosy University’s on site collections contain a wealth of subject-specific research materials searchable in the Online Public Access Catalog.  Catalog searching is easily limited to individual campus collections.  Alternatively, students can search combined collections of all Argosy University Libraries.  Students are encouraged to seek research and reference assistance from campus librarians.

Information Literacy: Argosy University’s Information Literacy Tutorial was developed to teach students fundamental and transferable research skills. The tutorial consists of five modules where students learn to select sources appropriate for academic-level research, search periodical indexes and search engines, and evaluate and cite information. In the tutorial, students study concepts and practice them through interactions. At the conclusion of each module, they can test their comprehension and receive immediate feedback. Each module takes less than 20 minutes to complete. Please view the tutorial at http://library.argosyu.edu/infolit/

Academic Policies

Academic Dishonesty/Plagiarism: In an effort to foster a spirit of honesty and integrity during the learning process, Argosy University requires that the submission of all course assignments represent the original work produced by that student. All sources must be documented through normal scholarly references/citations and all work must be submitted using the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association, 5th Edition (2001). Washington DC: American Psychological Association (APA) format. Please refer to Appendix A in the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association, 5th Edition for thesis and paper format. Students are encouraged to purchase this manual (required in some courses) and become familiar with its content as well as consult the Argosy University catalog for further information regarding academic dishonesty and plagiarism.

Page 38

Scholarly writing: The faculty at Argosy University is dedicated to providing a learning environment that supports scholarly and ethical writing, free from academic dishonesty and plagiarism. This includes the proper and appropriate referencing of all sources. You may be asked to submit your course assignments through “Turnitin,” (www.turnitin.com), an online resource established to help educators develop writing/research skills and detect potential cases of academic dishonesty. Turnitin compares submitted papers to billions of pages of content and provides a comparison report to your instructor. This comparison detects papers that share common information and duplicative language.
