A practical electrical circuit diagram consisting of source, fuse, switch and load.

Definition of conductor and insulator with examples (15 periods)

Electrical Resistance and Circuits: Definition of resistance and its SI unit, laws of resistance,

Ohm’s law – applications, limitations with simple problems. Determination of equivalent

resistance for resistances connected in series and parallel with simple problems. (12periods)

Unit -2

Work, Power and Energy: Definitions of work, Electric power, Electrical energy and their SI

units with simple problems. Relationship between Horse-Power and Kilo-Watt. (10periods)

Magnetism and Electromagnetism: Introduction to magnetism, permanent-magnet and

electro-magnet with uses. Definitions of magnetic field, magnetic flux, flux density, m.m.f,

reluctance and their SI units. Determination of direction of magnetic field by right hand thumb

rule and cork-screw rule. (12 periods)

projection of point in the first, second, third, & fourth quadrant. (10 Periods)

Pre-requisites: Knowledge basic Electrical and Electronics

Course Objective:

The objective of the laboratory course is to identify the various tools, wires, electrical fittings,

measuring instruments, resistors and diode. Wire-up various Electrical wiring circuits, prepare

wiring joints and measurement of electrical parameters like voltage, current, resistance, power

and electrical energy.

Course Outcomes: After completion of the course the student should be able to

i. Identify different types of wiring tools and different types of wires.

ii. Connect different electrical meters.

iii. Prepare different types of joints.

iv. Rig-up various wiring circuits and test the same.

v. Understand Ohm’s Law.

List of Graded Exercises:

1. Study and identification of different types of insulated wires conductors insulators,

electrical fittings and safety devices.

2. Identification and use of different types of tools in wiring system, study of wire gauge.

3. Identification, connection and uses of ammeter, voltmeter, wattmeter, energy meter and

speedometer.

4. Preparation of a straight joint.

5. Preparation of a T-joint.

6. Preparation of a Western-union joint.

7. Wire-up a circuit in a PVC Conduit system to control a lamp from a single point.

8. Wire-up a circuit to control two lamps in series in PVC conduit system.

9. Wire-up a circuit to control two lamps in parallel in PVC conduit system.

10. Wire-up circuit to control two lamps in series and a lamp in parallel in PVC conduit

system.

11. Wire-up a circuit to control two lamps independently.

12. Construct a suitable circuit to verify Ohm’s Law.
