QUIZ: How well do you know your major?
Today, we will cover frequently asked quesAons on these topics: • RegistraAon • Courses: Bio, Math, Chem, and GEs • Grades • GraduaAon • Careers and Research
But before we start, are you in the right place?
• This is Biology major advising for freshmen who entered in Fall 2013. Your a^endance unAl the end of the session will release your registraAon hold for Fall 2014 classes.
(Note there is no registraAon hold for Bio majors for Summer 2014 classes.)
• Q: How do I change my major to something other than Bio?
• A: Go to Admissions and Records (LH-‐114) and fill out the “Change of Academic ObjecAve” form ($10 fee). When you bring the form to the Bio Dept to be signed, the Bio Dept staff will release your hold.

A: Working 20 hours/week, the recommended maximum is 9-‐12 units. The more hours you’re working, the fewer units you should be taking.
School is like a job! (see guidelines next slide)
Q: If I’m working 20 hours per week, how many units should I register for?

PLANNING YOUR COURSEWORK Many CSUF students work. This impacts the amount of time students have outside of class to study. If You Are Employed: Then Your School Work Should Be: (Hours Per Week) (Maximum Units Per Semester)

10 – 19 13 – 14 20 – 29 9 – 12 30 – 39 6 – 9

TO BE A SUCCESSFUL TITAN
STUDY 25 - 35
Q: If I’m working 20 hours per week, how many units should I register for?
Q: I want to take more units because I feel like I’m behind. Most Bio majors
graduate in 4 years, right?
Q: I want to take more units because I feel like I’m behind. Most Bio majors
graduate in 4 years, right?
A: No, only about 10% of Bio majors finish in 4 years. Most Bio majors
graduate in 5, 6, or 7 years.
(So please do not overload yourself with units because you feel “behind”! Your grades will suffer.)
Q: What does “upper division” mean?
A: “Upper division” means 300-‐400 level. Note ALL community college
courses are “lower-‐division.”
Q: If I want to take a course at a community college, how do I get transfer credit for the course?
A: Check the transfer course equivalencies at www.assist.org. When the course is over, have the community
college send your transcript to Admissions and Records.
Q: Where can I find out the prerequisites for a course I want to
take?
A: Check the course descripAon on TITAN ONLINE or in the Course Catalog.
Q: If the secAon I want to take is full (i.e. for Biol 172), should I enroll in a different secAon and put myself on the waitlist for the secAon
I want?
Q: If the secAon I want to take is full (i.e. for Biol 172), should I enroll in a different secAon and put myself on the waitlist for the secAon
I want? A: Read the waitlist guidelines (in the
RegistraAon Guide from Admissions & Records)! You will NOT get into a class that you’re
waitlisted for IF: (1) you’re enrolled in another secAon of the same course, (2) there is a Ame conflict with a course you’re enrolled in, or (3) that course would exceed your unit limit for the
term.
QUIZ: How well do you know your major?
Today, we will cover frequently asked quesAons on these topics: • RegistraAon • Courses: Bio, Math, Chem, and GEs • Grades • GraduaAon • Careers and Research
Q: When can I take Biol 171?
A: To take Biol 171, you must be eligible to take MATH 115 or higher and have passed or be eligible to take
ENGL 101.
Q: If I can't get in to Biol 171, should I take Biol 101 instead?
A: No, Biol 101 does not count toward the major.
Q: What if I can’t get into the Bio class I need?
A: Increase your chances of gepng the classes you need by registering as soon as your appointment begins. Always go for advising in advance so your hold can be
released. Put yourself on the waitlist (read waitlist rules). Or, sign up for a community college course that will transfer (check
www.assist.org).
Q: When do I declare my concentraAon within Biology?
A: You will declare your concentraAon when you are taking Biol 274.
Q: I heard rumors that the classes in the Bio major are changing soon. What should I do? A: ConAnue to follow the current course curriculum! In Fall 2014, we expect that all
Bio core courses (Biol 171, 172, 273, and 274) will be 4 units instead of 5 units, to
accommodate demand. Requirements and units for the major will be adjusted
accordingly. Once any curricular changes are finalized, there will be a matrix to show how you can finish the degree with the courses
you have already completed.
QUIZ: How well do you know your major?

Q: How do I decide whether to take Math 130 & 338 or Math 150A & B?
A: Math 130 & 338 is recommended for most Bio majors. Math 150A & B is
recommended only if you plan to apply to optometry or pharmacy
school.
Q: Do I need to take Math 338 right arer I take Math 130?
A: No. You may take Math 338 much later on during college. Arer finishing Math 130, focus on your Bio and Chem
courses.
TRUE or FALSE: When I'm finished with Math 130, I can enroll in Chem 120A.
FALSE: To enroll in Chem 120A, you need to pass the Chem Placement
Exam (CPE) or have completed Chem 115 (or equivalent).
Chemistry placement exam (CPE) This exam will tell you which Chemistry course to take.
o You need to take this exam to register for Chem120A. o You can register for Chem115 (the prerequisite for Chem120A) without taking the exam.

Q: How hard is the CPE?
A: The CPE is 44 mulAple-‐choice quesAons addressing basic concepts in arithmeAc, algebra, and high school
chemistry. The CPE may be taken only once a year and test scores are valid for 3 consecuAve semesters. Sign-‐up
in advance is required.
Q: Do I need to take extra courses in GE Category B (ScienAfic inquiry and
QuanAtaAve reasoning)?
A: No. The courses you will take for the Bio major will meet and exceed the requirements for GE Category B.
Q: Where do I go if I have quesAons about GE courses?
A: For quesAons about GEs, see the Academic Advising Center in UH-‐123A.

Today, we will cover frequently asked quesAons on these topics: • RegistraAon • Courses: Bio, Math, Chem, and GEs • Grades • GraduaAon • Careers and Research
Q: Are my grades important anyway? A: Yes, if you apply to ANY graduate or professional school, the admissions commi^ee will examine your CSUF
transcript and GPA. Even if you don’t know what you want to do arer graduaAng, earn the best grades that you can now to keep your opAons open. At minimum, you need a C or higher and ≥2.0 GPA in all courses
for the major to graduate.
