The jackpot on 1st July grew to $1,330.00 thanks to all the club members who keenly supported this Centenary Fundraiser. The watching members eagerly awaited the draw. Peter Field was the lucky one to win the wine and have a chance to find the elusive joker! Opting for the top card, from the now skinny pack, the joker was revealed! Congratulations to Peter Field on his win. And thank you also Peter for donating half of his winnings back to the club. Overall the club has now benefited by more than $2,000 from this fund raiser – and more than 30 members gained a bottle of wine.

— Thank you to all those who participated in this activity. —

Due to the popularity of this activity, the JACKPOT JOKER is recommencing immediately.

The Club Centenary is rapidly ap-proaching as the days remaining to the anniversary date reduce! The actual date of the 100th anniversary of the formation of the club is Tuesday 29 Au-gust 2006. To commemorate this historic event a Celebration Dinner is to be held on Saturday 2 September. I encourage all members and friends of the club to attend this historic gala event. Further details and booking ar-rangements are included elsewhere in this newsletter. To coincide with the beginning of the 2006-2007 season a “Back to East Fre-mantle Day” is to be held on 21 Octo-ber. There will be an afternoon of social tennis, some special activities and cele-brations with a casual meal to conclude the day. Further details will be

distributed as the date draws nearer – but mark it in your diary now. The Centenary Committee has been busy collecting historic data, photos and memorabilia and is still seeking to ‘fill out’ the gaps with information and memorabilia from past years. If you have any items that may be of interest please contact Peter Field or myself. Please notify any friends, family or contacts that you may have about the coming celebrations. Further copies of the newsletter can be downloaded from the club web-site. I look forward to see-ing you at one or both of the above special events.

The fifteen years 1948 to 1963 were a period of substantial change, direction and challenge at the EFLTC. The Club’s minutes of meetings start in 1948. The major changes of this period taken from committee meetings and AGM’s are summarized as: -

• April 1949 - EFLTC was formally incorporated.

• September 1949 – Discussions on having a formal lease of the 12 grass courts at the original Allen Street site (to be exact Corner Allen & Fletcher Streets) with the Town of East Fremantle and introduction of Building Fund levy to erect a new Clubhouse.

• June 1952 – Committee discussion com-menced on building a new Clubhouse at the original Allen Street courts.

• July 1957 – 20 years lease agreed with Town of East Fremantle.

• March 8th, 1958 – New Clubhouse at Allen Street opened at cost of ₤3,750 ($7,500).

• 1959 – Rejoined the Western Australian Lawn Tennis Association

• July 7th, 1958 – Arthur Marshall appointed Club Professional on a three-year contract.

• March 1960 – EFLTC approached by Town of East Fremantle for the Bowling Club to take over the Allen Street courts and to transfer the Club to new site overlooking the Swan River at Corner Preston Point Road & Petra Street.

• August 1961 – Clearing of land commenced at the new Swan River site. Grass planted October 1961.

• June 1963 – Play finished at Allen Street courts.

• October 26th 1963 – 16 grass courts opened at the Swan River site as well as the new Clubhouse. Clubhouse cost ₤12,000 ($24,000).

• December 7th 1963- Formal opening of the Swan River site. 10 hard courts opened in March 1964.

Within 15 years EFLTC had built two new Club-houses, agreed a formal lease with Council, introduced a Club Professional & Coach and trans-ferred to a new and bigger location. A challenging period that involved much work by Club stalwarts Fred Worley, Bert Legg, Dudley Hartree, Ralph Edgar and current life member Max Binning. There were a number other members who contributed. The transfer to our current site overlooking the Swan River is a story on its own deserving being reported on in a separate article. Longevity was the norm for Club officials of this 15 years period with only three Presidents Bert Wil-liams (1946-1950 followed by two more years on the committee and then a Vice-Patron), Fred Worley served 11 years (9 as President 1950-1959) & Bert Legg all 15 years (Club Captain 1948-1960 & President 1960-1964). Max Binning served 11 years in a variety of roles during the years 1952-1963 before becoming President from 1964 to 1967. Ralph Edgar was Vice President for 6 years from 1955-1961. For the full period of 15 years W Wauhop was both Mayor of the Town of East Fremantle and Club Patron.

History records that in 1906 EFLTC affiliated with the Western Australian Lawn Tennis Association (WALTA). At some time EFLTC withdrew from WALTA and together with other clubs in the district was affiliated with the Fremantle & Districts Tennis Association. With the introduction of Arthur Marshall as Club Professional his recommendation was taken in 1959 to re-affiliate with WALTA. The opportunity was presented to all members and in particular our juniors to participate in a stronger competition and develop their tennis to a higher standard.

A CLUB CHAMPION FROM THE 1930’S

At last some history has come to hand from before 1948 of a past Champion of the Club. Ray Jenkins was Singles Champion of the East Fremantle Lawn Tennis Club Inc for six consecutive years from 1933 to 1939 inclusive. His record as Men’s Club Champion has since been improved upon by the late Fred Worley in the latter years of the1940’s and 1950’s and in recent years by our current Club Professional Scott Marshall. It was a formidable achievement by Ray Jenkins at that period of time bear-ing in mind the war years of World War Two intervened to curtail his opportunities to improve on his record. During these years he played doubles with Keith Guidera. Ray was brought up in Oakover Street, East Fremantle with the family home having a tennis court at the rear of their home. He attended Fremantle Boys school where he became a member of the winning Slazenger

Cup team (an annual team competition for high school children). This team from Fremantle Boys was the first team from a public school to ever win the Cup. For his outstanding effort Ray was awarded a Sporting Scholarship to Christchurch Grammar School to continue his schooling. He was also a brilliant footballer playing with East Fremantle in the 1940’s and was a member of their Premiership team in 1945. Ray worked for Mobil Oil Co as a country representative. It was during this period that while working from Bruce Rock / Quairading he became ill and contracted polio. Regretfully Ray’s life was cut short when he passed away at just 27 years of age. Thanks to Peter & Margaret Mapstone for their contribution. Ray was the Uncle of Margaret Mapstone.

It was very soon after the formation of the East Fremantle Lawn Tennis Club that the club joined the West Australian Tennis Association (WALTA Minutes 3/09/1906) - now Tennis West. The club first nominated pennant teams for the 1907 season.

Since 1958 the Marshall Family has been asso-ciated in the capacity of Club Professional & Coach as well as club member with the East Fremantle Lawn Tennis Club Inc. Arthur ‘s involvement as Club Professional & Coach with EFLTC was from 1958 to 1992 when son Scott replaced him. Prior to 1958 the Club’s minutes record that any coaching at EFLTC was on an irregular demand basis for a few weeks every year in the 1950’s. Arthur Marshall had returned to Fremantle after touring overseas including playing at Wimbledon in 1955 and 1956. Tennis was in Arthur’s blood and he took the decision to turn professional bringing to EFLTC and the wider tennis community new ideas from Europe. In 1958 Fred Worley was in his seventh and last year as President, with Club stalwart Bert Legg as Captain and Ralph Edgar as Vice President. It was Ralph Edgar who convinced the President and committee to provide Arthur with the opportunity to become the Club’s first Professional Coach with EFLTC at the twelve grass courts on the corner of Allen and Fletcher Streets. This location became the first base for the Arthur Marshall Tennis Academy (AMTA). Arthur’s Vision: A change was felt at EFLTC immediately in that Arthur’s vision of tennis in the wider Fremantle district convinced not only our Club but the tennis clubs of Fremantle, Melville and Applecross to become affiliated with the Western Australian Lawn Tennis Association, thus breaking away from the local Fremantle Districts competition and enhancing the opportunity for players to participate in a wider and more intense pennant competition. Each of the Clubs then became eligible to play pennant tennis against all metropolitan clubs. Individual players benefited by being an affiliated player and were able to gain State rankings. In just six years East Fremantle

achieved Men’s and Junior Boy’s “A” Grade status fielding strong teams for a number of years. Junior Development: The major contribution by the AMTA was the tremendous growth in junior tennis. The growth in junior development assisted the EFLTC with substantial input and support from Arthur to give the Town of East Fremantle the confidence to move the Club to its current location overlooking the Swan River at the corner of Petra Street and Preston Point Road. Arthur assisted with the design of the 16 grass courts and ten hard courts. The move to the river location at the commence-ment of the 1963/1964 season was an impetus for further development of junior tennis. For the next 25 years East Fremantle produced a State underage champion each year with many being selected in State Teams including the prestige national Linton & Wilson Cups for boys and girls respectively. Some of the outstanding junior players that started their careers with coaching at the AMTA include Gary Penberthy and Brad Properjohn (WA Men’s Open Champion in 1988) both achieved Number One State rankings; Vicki Lancaster won an Australian Junior Doubles title and participated at Wimbledon. Christine Matison (now Dorey) and Ann Coleman also competed at Wimbledon. Vicki; Brad; Scott Marshall; John (current professional at Dalkeith TC) and his brother Michael Thorpe; Hugh Thompson (still resides in the USA and in re-cent years won the ITF World Seniors Over 55) and Heather Fraser all accepted scholarships to play in the USA. Others to excel include:- Ross Olivieri who was member of a rare winning Linton Cup team; the Bowler sisters Helen and Marie; Joan Bonser (nee Shanahan who is now Club President at Hensman); the McCarthy family Terry, Brendan

and Bernadette; Noelene Abe (nee McCarthy and not related to Terry etc); Ian Bersin; Keith Hince and Michael Patterson to mention a few. Arthur was rewarded for his coaching expertise with juniors by becoming State Coach for a number of years, and an Australian Under 16 squad coach. Club Service: Arthur brought back from his tennis experience touring Europe during the mid fifties many new ideas in a period when the principles of amateur sport were dominant and professionalism was on the outer. At that time coaches rarely charged and professional tennis players were banned from playing pennants and tourna-ments. It was in 1968 that open tennis was introduced to allow Arthur the opportunity of playing pennants for the Club and in Club tournaments. Arthur applauds the vision of the EFLTC committee through Ralph Edgar in 1958 to give him the opportunity of a career in tennis coaching. Since 1958 Arthur has contributed enormously to the Club by way of junior development; assistance with re-location to the current Swan River venue; new ideas; fund raising and above all ensuring that East Fremantle and the Fremantle tennis community was placed on the wider state, national and global tennis maps. Arthur served on the EFLTC committee for 10 years before a stint as President in 1975 -1976. Wife Helen was EFLTC Secretary for 4 years, before organizing the Junior Club for 8 years and then started a Tennis “Singles” Club to encourage single people to play tennis and join EFLTC.

Club Host: In his capacity as Club Professional Arthur hosted many champion tennis players and celebrities at East Fremantle including: -

• The Indian and Belgium Davis Cup teams visited the Allen Street venue.

• Lew Hoad and Ken Rosewall gave exhibitions at different times on their visits to Perth.

• Margaret Court Some of the celebrities include Bill Cosby from USA TV, Warren Mitchell (Alf of the long running BBC TV soapy “Till Death Do Us Part “ fame) and Norm Rowe the Australian singer.

Club Events: In addition, introduced a number of innovative events at East Fremantle: - • The first South of The River Junior Tennis

Tournament at the Allen Street venue. An initiative was to charge entry fee of two shillings. This was one idea that was not accepted by the public and lasted one day. The experience was worth the trial.

• The first Tennis Camp in Australia was at the Swan River venue with the attendees accommodated in the Clubhouse during the week of activities. Subsequently the Town of East Fremantle issued notice that health regulations did not allow the Clubhouse to be used for accommodation and the Tennis Camp moved to Wesley College.

• The Coca Cola (now Toyota Junior Classic) under-age tournament first held in 1985 has for many years been the largest Tennis West sanctioned event on the junior tennis calendar.

• The first Telethon Tennis Day and the Appealathon Jumbo Day.

Best Memories: •Appointment in 1958 to EFLTC as Club Professional & Coach. •Creating changes in tennis coaching methods. •Placing East Fremantle and the wider Fremantle tennis community on the tennis map. •Watching and being part of develop-ments of the tennis courts overlooking the Swan River. •Being part of the EFLTC team that achieved “A” Grade status and was runner-up three times. •Proud of family participation totalling 48 years with EFLTC and their achievements. •Being awarded Life Membership with EFLTC. •The number of friends made at EFLTC.

The Marshall Children:

The three children of Arthur & Helen have all been part of EFLTC as social and competitive playing members , serving the Club on committees, assisting with special events and coaching. Clark started as a pupil of the AMTA at 9 years of age before graduating to the Junior Club then progressed to Junior Pennants. Since his junior days Clark has been a regular member of winning teams, in all twelve consisting of eight Tennis West and four South Suburban Tennis Association. Clark has been a member for 36 years serving on the EFLTC Committee on six

occasions. For his efforts he has been a winner of the Best Club Person award. Dixie won both the Club Junior Girls & Sen-ior Ladies on three occasions from 1978 to 1980 before departing for the eastern states to further her career. Dixie is now well known as a newsreader for Channel 9 in Perth. Scott’s involvement with EFLTC started as a junior in the 1970’s and continues in the new millennium. Scott trading as Marshall’s Tennis Academy was appointed Club Professional & Coach in 1993 after tennis scholarship stints at the Australian Institute of Sport and the USA where he represented Australia in the Japan Open Grass Court Tournament and became an NJCAA All American. Currently Scott supervises the Junior Club, manages the Junior Tournament in December each year and assists with Club Gala Days for the EFLTC. From 1993 has delivered coaching programs to the general public as well as club members with emphasis on juniors. Scott has enjoyed both social and competitive tennis at EFLTC. A check of the honour boards and pennant shields discloses some of Scott’s achievements as a member of winning pen-nant teams; Junior Division 1 for five con-secutive years from 1977 to 1981; Men’s Division 1 in 2001 & 2002. Also received the Tennis West Men’s Division 1 “Most Valuable Player” award on three consecutive years 2002 to 2005. Scott’s proudest achievement is winning the EFLTC Men’s Singles Championships on sixteen occasions between 1988 and 2006. This is a Club record.
