Online courses and Open School BC

Bringing online courses into BC classrooms is a great challenge. Increasing costs ofcourse delivery systems and technical services makes it difficult for many districtsto offer online options to their students and teachers.

Open School BC, the BC Ministry of Education, Distributed Electronic LearningConsortium, and the Consortium of Online Learning (COOL) have negotiated atwo-year, shared WebCT license, available to school districts in British Columbiaand Alberta starting July 2003. This license allows school districts providing onlineprograms to access WebCT on a central server that is hosted and technicallysupported by the Online Consortium Hosting Service (OCHS), a service of OpenSchool BC.

Through the OCHS, school districts have the option to have their own courseshosted, to license the use of Open School BC courses for their learners, or, if amember of COOL, to access the courses provided by this consortium.

Open School BC Online course offerings include:Accounting 11 & 12 Career & Personal Planning 11/12 Chemistry 11Drama: Film & Television 11 Drama: History of Film 12 Earth Science 11English 11 & 12 Entrepreneurship 12 History 12Information Technology 11 & 12 Journalism 12 Law 12Social Studies 8 & 11 Visual Arts: Media Arts 11 Spanish 11

THE PRIMARY PROGRAM

Kindergarten to Grade 3

The Primary Program consists of thematic modules that

integrate learning outcomes from the various subject

areas. In Kindergarten all subject areas are integrated

into the module activities and projects (language arts,

science, mathematics, social studies, art, music, and

physical activity). In Grades 1, 2, and 3, all subject

areas except mathematics are integrated into the

module activities and projects. Each of these grades has

a separate mathematics course.

NOTE: Originally there were more modules inthe program to allow for choice. Themodules in this catalogue have proven tobe most effective and now comprise theprogram. Students are not necessarilyexpected to complete all the modules foreach grade level so choice is still possible.
