this year, slowly coming to an end, has been the most important in Design Terminal’s history.

As of January 1st, 2014, we have become an indepen-dent public body. We launched our incubation program, having offered support in the fields of business development, intel-lectual property management, branding and visibility at local and international trade fairs and exhibitions to nearly 150 enterprises already this year. our research division focusing on the relationship between creative industry and competitiveness was established, while our summer university to develop entrepreneurial skills and foster teamwork among young professionals also kicked off. While nurturing our existing strategic partnerships, we also signed a number of new ones, inviting import-ant state and market leaders to join the supporters of creative economy—from the municipality of Budapest to heineken.

In 2014 alone, our freshly refurbished headquarters in downtown Budapest housed nearly 250 industry events welcoming the entrepreneurs of today and to-morrow—attracting a total of almost 100.000 visitors. What’s more, we received the european enterprise promotion award, and Google, the Financial Times, the International Visegrad Fund and the ResPublica Institute also commended us jointly, describing Design Terminal as “one of Central Europe’s most important institutions”.

This year, for the first time, we would like to share our work in the form of an annual report. With you, one of our key partners and friends—without whom none of this would have been possible. There’s plenty left to do and we can hardly wait!

Cordially yours,

incubation program

Maform Design Studio Design Terminal consultation program

2014 marks the launch of Design Terminal’s incuba-tion program. The program offers free services on a  competitive basis to hungarian creative enterprises, supporting them as they strive to succeed on local and international markets—participants are select-ed by a team of experts, based on clearly defined professional criteria. Our incubation program not on-ly provides a consistent framework for the services developed by Design Terminal in the past years, but has also become our organization’s most important primary activity, through which we offer assistance to around 150 enterprises each year.

As of 2014, all of our activities center around incuba-tion, the support of all entrepreneurs who turn to us. The structure and content of the incubation program will never truly be final, as we intend to develop and adjust it constantly to match the needs defined by current trends. We launched the following incubation services in 2014:

Consultation proGram

In the framework of this program, we provide some 7–10 creative enterprises free consultations in the fields of industrial property rights, business model development and brand building. Enterprises apply-ing for the monthly sessions must summarize the key challenges their company faces beforehand, in writing—this way, Design Terminal’s expert team has a chance to prepare and offer them specific short-, middle- and long-run suggestions during the session itself. The enterprises are welcome to visit the pro-gram’s subsequent sessions as well, to evaluate re-sults together with our expert team. Each participant of the consultation program gives us feedback regarding the usefulness of their experience via our satisfaction survey. Our consultation program provides some 110 enterprises with free business development support

each year. The following enterprises participated in our consultation program in 2014:

LINX | Várdai Design stúdió | Zsiemankaje (Kálmán Nyilas) | Modelpress | Barnoff | Anna Daubner | Nezzan | v70design | Fufavi | DolfoArt | Maform | Csodaceruza | Imecskata | Lantos Timea | OKAPI | Plié by Atelier | Remember the lion | Dorka Petrity | Németh Klára | YKRA | Uniqball | Barnoff | Aimée | Anshaa | Ducsai | Virivee | Baukó design | Pikkpakk shoes | Aranyház projekt | 2face csapat | Cukovy | studio nomad | Monarchy | Petrovits Olga Zsuzsanna | Zebramade | Palniture Raklapból bútor | Paperspokes | Notonotes | Evercover | Idea Tanoda | Metzler Tibor Bee (Gergő Szilágyi) | Ferencz Vanda | Ivócsap | Captain Kooperoo | Blum and Wood | Bizsók Hangsugárzó Manufaktúra | BIGO | Witchmade | LauraPapp | Freshka Design | AB Concrete Desing | Bálint Sára | Beta version | Bibe | Müüska

mentorinG proGram

The aim of this program is to prepare the most prom-ising creative enterprises to utilize external investment and lay down the foundations for the successful in-ternational expansion of their markets through six months of in-depth professional cooperation. 5 enter-prises, selected based on publicly available eligibility criteria, are offered the chance to participate in the program each half year. Companies participating in the program are each paired, based on the most rele-vant challenges they face, with an established mentor, with whom they interact daily in the course of daily operations and the fulfillment of tasks specified by the mentor. Annually, a total of 10 enterprises are provided assistance to establish themselves on international markets and prepare themselves to become targets of external investment. The following companies were selected for the first round of our mentor program, launched in Autumn of 2014:

anna Daubner is a label based on a contemporary female concept, founded by Anna Daubner in 2014. The label combines minimalism with playfulness and modern elegance. From the very beginning, Anna want-ed to launch a label that would quickly be ready to take on international markets as well. The designer studied textile and garment design at the Moholy-Nagy university of Art and Design. Following her graduation, she relocated to London to expand her professional skill set and familiarize herself with different perspec-tives of fashion. One of the biggest successes of the label until now was that its designer was shortlisted among the best 50 applicants at the muuse x vogue young talents competition, based on the decision of 35 thousand voters—the only Hungarian designer to receive the honor. The label plans to appear at local and international trade fairs and fashion shows in the future. The enterprise needs specific guidance with respect to its business plan, certain finance-related tasks and communications steps, in order ensure a prosperous future for the brand through sound pro-fessional decisions.

Designers anett Gálvölgyi, Anna Zsófia Kormos and márton miovác comprise ThefOUR. Of definitive im-portance for the label: channeling the spirit of current times and ensuring prominent roles for handcraft tech-niques and unique detailing in each of their seasonal collections. Their products are currently available in Budapest and Shanghai, while their technological development and manufacturing processes are entirely based in Budapest and use local and European mate-rials. They achieved their first success in 2011, win-ning the Fashion Issue special award at that year’s Gombold újra! competition as well as the internation-al young Creative Chevrolet competition. among their short term goals, they would like to see, employing a consciously structured strategy, the ThefOUR label reach international markets, establish a loyal network of retailers and become an important, stable market participant. The creative side must be reinforced by a sound business background, focusing on job cre-ation and the development of the local design and fashion industries.

Plié by Atelier is an experimental workshop founded in 2012 by the atelierarchitects creative architecture studio, and its two founders, Gergely Kiss-Gál and zsuzsanna Kiss-Gál. The Plié furniture collection, manufactured using brand-new furniture production technology, debuted at TenT London in September of 2013. all of Gergely Kiss-Gál’s work is defined by his unique and innovative perspective. The company’s primary goals besides product development are to expand their products’ sales channels and increase the brand’s visibility in leading international online and print design media.

The POSITION Collective brand was founded in 2009 by eszter Kavalecz and Bence simonfalvi, in the form of an online design platform featuring outstanding local and international projects in design and applied arts in the broader sense. Their first independent furniture collection appeared in early 2010, and was widely acclaimed by experts. Thanks to trade fairs and inter-national media attention, today, the Collective receives requests from all over the globe—pushing them further toward international success. First sales channels in British, French and German areas, considered prima-ry target markets—have been developed, and provide a steady stream of orders. The Collective’s goal is to expand their activities, enabling them to branch out on international markets not only as an interior design firm, but as a characteristically hungarian, clean-cut and functional successful design brand in touch with international trends, reinforced by a design mindset founded in cultural heritage.

One of the most important goals of our incubation activities is to boost the interest of venture capital and private investors in creative enterprises. Creative industry, specifically its export-driven segments offer investors rapid growth—the experiences of local funds investing from the start are particularly positive. At the same time, strengthening the ties between investors and enterprises is very important, a significant number of investors interested in creative industry aside the traditionally popular IT sectors are needed to ensure more promising products and services receive the ex-ternal investment—usually around 10-100 M HuF—re-quired to ensure international expansion. Every three months, Design Terminal publishes an industry report analyzing the most promising companies we come in contact with through our consultation and mentor-ing programs. These reports, featuring between 3-5

enterprises each and available free of charge, intro-duce investors and investments funds to a selection of companies already mature enough to effectively utilize external financing. If requested, Design Terminal also provides mediation services preceding negotiations free of charge. List of companies appearing in 2014 reports:

as of 2014, design Terminal’s oldest field of opera-tions, the organization of creative exhibitions and trade fairs, present from the very beginning, also ties into our Incubation program. The goal of the exhibitions and trade fairs we organize and support is the improve-ment of the business ecosystem, in order to provide enterprises opportunities to meet industry actors, re-tailers and consumers—to achieve market validation and to actively build their brands and expand their commercial networks. We are convinced that these events—given an appro-priate strategy—do not only benefit the entrepreneurs themselves, but, boosting city and country image, Budapest and Hungary as well. Consequently, starting in 2014, we have opened the doors of our largest trade exhibitions to international enterprises as well, with no attempt to hide the fact that we aim to push Budapest towards becoming a central eastern European creative industry center. Due to this strategy, a number of our largest events have now become the region’s most relevant events of their kind.

HBH’s main operations center around the production of outdoor and indoor sports equipment. They created their first prototype, to be used in body weight training, in 2013. H3Hungary Kft was founded in December of 2013 by szabolcs Csepregi and tamás erdélyi. During a 2 year period, they constructed their equipment in 5 Budapest public parks, which were a great test to base future product development on. Presence at various international exhibitions is among their plans, in order to facilitate the development of a distributor network and further sales activities on international markets.

In 2014, Central Europe’s largest design festival was again organized by the Hungarian Intellectual Prop-erty Office with design Terminal acting as key expert partner and financial sponsor. The theme of this year’s Design Week Budapest, summarized in the slogan

“Figurative Sense”, was the ever stronger relationship between technology and the various branches of de-sign, while its Guest of honor was the Kingdom of the netherlands. The event series, which, contrary to its name, is much longer than seven days, encompassed over 200 separate events this year.

In 2014, for the first time, the Gombold újra! garment design competition welcomed applications from the citizens of each of the visegrád Group countries. Talented Czech, Hungarian, Polish and Slovakian de-signers were tasked with exploring each others cultural heritage—the creation of a collection inspired by one of the other Visegrád countries. Alongside 14 additional fashion shows featuring the region’s most competitive fashion labels, the final of the Gombold újra! Central Europe competition was one of the highlights of Cen-tral European Fashion Days (CEFD), which, in terms of its rich schedule and mere size, has now become Central europe’s most relevant fashion industry forum.

CEFD, welcoming over 10 000 visitors, was supported by key partner and consultant imG Fashion, producer of the new york, berlin, milan and istanbul fashion Weeks, whose participation has placed the Budapest event on the fashion industry’s international calendar.

We organized the summit meeting of 3D printing technologies revolutionizing design and mass pro-duction for the second time in 2014—this time, on an international platform. the event, featuring Czech, polish, German and american exhibitors aside their local counterparts active in the tech scene, not only offered industry actors a chance to network, but also gave a broader audience a glimpse at how technology impacts everyday life.

In 2014, Hungary’s largest graphic design extravagan-za was again organized in wide-scale expert cooper-ation, with the support of Design Terminal. Besides highlighting the past year’s most outstanding accom-plishments in graphic design, the schedule also includ-ed workshops to assist fresh talent just setting out in the field and presentations and talks by renowned international speakers aimed at the broader public.

We organized our Christmas fair aiming to strength-en ties between Hungarian product designers and consumers for the fourth time in 2014. Aside the at Christmas headquarters at erzsébet tér, for the first time this year, our stands featuring the brands of 150 local designers popped up at the Liszt ferenc inter-national Ariport Sky Court and Westend mall, in the Four Seasons Hotel and the Hungarian National Gallery as well. Design Terminal charges no commission for products sold at AT Christmas, thus, all proceeds go directly to the designers themselves.

In the framework of our Incubation program, we also offer local enterprises the chance to introduce them-selves at the creative industry’s most important inter-national forums. In the preparatory stage of these in-ternational appearances, our aim is never to maximize volume (to ensure that the largest possible number of entrepreneurs exhibit at any given event), instead, we focus on business compatibility: our goal is to make sure each and every company we assist gets the chance to shine at the event, in the manner most appropriate for its own stage of business development.

Consequently, our services to the most promising enterprises taking part in our Incubation program emphasize preparation, the selection of the most appropriate exhibition or trade fair, the development of the strategy to be implemented there and the organi-zation of industry and commercial meetings that make on-site presence truly worthwhile. In 2014, we provided a number of industrial design, fashion industry and tech enterprises the opportunity to exhibit in Western Europe, the united States and in the Middle East.

researCh anD traininG

In early 2014, we launched research and training activ-ities strongly aligned with our incubation services. Our goal with our research projects is to ensure we have sound empirical knowledge regarding the performance of local creative industry branches, their current and possible growth, and the identification of segments with most future growth potential—all indispensable for effective incubation. Our first study, a foundation, so to say, to build on in the future, which we completed in collaboration with the Hétfa Research Institute ac-tive in the formulation of development policy strategies and the evaluation of their effectiveness, confirmed our hypotheses. The study, titled “Creative industry as a resource—the Contribution of Creative sectors to hungary’s Competitiveness today and tomorrow”, will be published as university teaching material during the course of 2015.

Our training activities serve the enterprises of to-morrow. Based on the holis methodology created in Design terminal, we group creatives, economists, engineers and liberal arts majors just starting their careers together in multidisciplinary teams, and ask these students from very different educational and subcultural backgrounds to work together on creat-ing holistic solutions to real-world business problems. Apart from regular sessions at Design Terminal’s Erzsébet tér headquarters, in 2014, we also success-fully launched the hOLiS summer university, where multifaceted teams are tasked with figuring out an economically viable solution to one specific challenge the local community faces. Besides our own training

The Hungarian creative industry’s contribution to the nation’s overall economic performance is 3.7%, and it employs the same proportion of the labor force as agriculture. This is particularly interesting because the European Union considers creative industry, producing high quality products and services, as one of the strongest opportunities to improve the EU’s competitiveness. Goals for the next 10 years include the contribution of creative industry to GDP reaching 5%, the number of jobs in the industry to grow by 33% or 55.000 employees, and for its exports to double.

In 2014, the goal of HOLIS was to find a future function for an old felt factory in the outskirts of Kőszeg. The 25 successful applicants, selected by the HOLIS expert team to participate at Design Terminal’s summer university between 20-27 July 2014, were chosen from nearly 70 submissions arriving from 21 universities. Students currently studying at institutions over higher education and fresh graduates were both welcome to apply, if their field of professional interest and activity included the issues of buildings and their environment, interior design, environmentally sound technical solutions, online and offline communication and organizational and business models.

program, we also contributed significant resources to the success of a variety of holistic approach initiatives, including the summer school of the Bme management student association and the hello wood international creative camp.

As part of our Incubation program and in keeping with our traditions since 2012, Design terminal provides a free venue to industry events aiming to support the networking of fledgling enterprises, self-training and the sharing of information and knowhow. Our event rooms were refurbished in 2014, consequently, we can now offer enterprises, industry and civil organi-zations a divisible conference room seating 120 people ( instead of the previous 80), a terrace for 100 guests and a multifunctional events pavilion with room for 40

90% of the creative industry enterprises registered in hungary are active in the region of central Hungary, in line with global trends which dictate that creative business ecosystems (aside a few exceptions) typically arise in metropolises with thick cultural net-works. In 2014, Design terminal and the municipality

together with the city

of Budapest signed a strategic partnership. The most important goal of this collaboration is to make the creative industry concentrated in the city a central element of the capital’s economic development and the building of the Budapest brand.

smart City laB BuDapest

The competition announced by Design Terminal in May 2014 titled smart City lab Budapest aimed to support and implement ideas which allow for the re-imagina-tion of the relationship between urban development and technology. Having announced the contest, we received 30 submissions. Applicants were asked to apply in transport, water and urban green categories, with the involvement and support of the pertinent pub-lic service providers, the Centre for Budapest transport, the water works of Budapest and Főkert. Practical usefulness and further development potential were particularly relevant factors during the evaluation of submissions. The Karma team, winner in the trans-port category, designed a fast digital urban hitchhiking system. The jury selected the project titled Drinking Fountain from a Fire hydrant into the top three in the water category—the project focused on modifying Bu-dapest fire hydrants in such a way as to enable their use as everyday drinking fountains, while retaining the original fire safety functions. The Budapest Dialog web and mobile application, setting the stage for the direct participation of citizens in the development of urban green areas, triumphed in the urban green category.

Creative proDuCtion CapaCity

The scenes of traditional craftsmanship and mecha-nized industrial production, which became the norm during the 20th century, have gradually started dis-appearing from big cities. This is how it has been happening in Budapest as well, where the previously high number of lively manufacturing workshops has

drastically diminished, due to the pursuit of national-ization and the wide proliferation of mass production, and, with the transformation of the city’s structure, those remaining have tended towards the outskirts of the capital. However, there are still century-old fam-ily enterprises, workshops of craftsmen still working after countless decades and showrooms of profes-sionals active in creation, production and repairs to be found in the city center - the latter, in fact, steadily gaining popularity. The goal of the study launched by Design terminal in Summer 2014 was to explore and evaluate the manufactories existing in the city center within Nagykörút - their locations, opportunities and capacities. The study sheds light on the network of workshops operating behind the urban scenes, the characteristics and ambient of the individual premises. Our research allows for a better understanding of the operations of these small enterprises, and, at the same time, supports the networking of local designers and producers, giving them a chance to inspire each other. we published the findings of the study in december 2014, and also launched a website providing access to the collected database, which we have also opened to social data mining.

metro imaGe

The Centre for Budapest transport (BKK) and Design terminal signed a strategic cooperation agreement at the end of 2012. One of the most important goals of the collaboration of the two organizations is to ensure that the most talented artists of the Hungarian creative industry get the chance to participate in the renewal of the capital’s public transport and passenger infor-mation systems. As a part of this partnership, BKK, in cooperation with Design Terminal, announced an invited design tender for the creation of new logos for Budapest metro, suburban rail and Danube river boat services. Based on the decision of the international jury panel comprised of 8 experts, hidden Characters, designed by Dániel nagy and péter orbán, was named the winning submission. The original submission did not contain the final logos, those were developed joint-ly by the two-man team and BKK - and now appear all around the city at transport junctions.

Creative BuDapest

urban environments provide the background for cre-ative industries, by inspiring and supporting inno-vation. Consequently, it is of paramount importance for Design terminal to maintain dialogue and foster joint thinking with actors of the Hungarian creative industry. To achieve this goal, we have launched an event series under the name Creative Budapest, with which we wish both to reflect on the Creative Europe program encompassing the 2014-2020 programming period, and to promote the collection of all city ini-tiatives under the common goal of making Budapest the region’s creative center. In 2014, Design Terminal, with the Representation of the European Commission in Hungary as co-organizer and in media partnership with Kreativ magazine, organized 4 (sold-out) confer-ences involving local creative industry and business players on the following topics: (1) Spaces for Creativ-ity—What Makes a City Work? (2) The Role of Creative Industry in the Economy: Creativity as Added Value. (3) How to Launch a Creative Venture? Best Practic-es in Management and Administration (4) Creativity Without Borders. Local Products on Foreign Markets.

41Design Terminal – Annual Report

Beside our incubation services and active participa-tion in urban development, we also focus on attract-ing relevant international events to Budapest. These conferences, trainings and talent searches, through their own renown and recognition, also help boost Budapest’s image, putting the hungarian capital on the global map of creative industry, innovation and startup ecosystems.

• Spring of 2014 marked the second time we had the chance to co-organize and host the central and south-east European talent search of Silicon Valley’s singularity university, founded by Google and NASA. young professionals were asked to apply to the com-petition with ideas that have potential to positively impact the lives of at least 1 million people within the course of 3 years. The Global impact Competition in Budapest was awarded the “best practice” distinction again, as in 2013—meaning the event is considered an example for organizing teams around the world to follow. based on these mutually beneficial expe-riences, this year, Design Terminal and Singularity university signed a 3-year strategic cooperation agreement which ensures that the regional talent place will continue to take place in Budapest in the three years to come.

• invited by design Terminal and its partner, puli space technologies, Google xprize organized its summit in Hungary in June 2014. The current goal of the world’s most famous technological competition series is for participants to reach the Moon with an independent spacecraft equipped for scientific work. Contestants not only reported details of their recent progress to each other in Budapest, they also gave the broader public a hands-on introduction to the world of space enterprise.

internationalGuests in Budapest

• in keeping with the traditions of previous years, we again welcomed a number of international training series supporting budding enterprises, such as lean startup Circle, startup sauna, product hunt and pio-neers unplugged.

• in 2014, design Terminal and its audience were again honored by the visits of number of world-renowned speakers, including George Friedman.

The success of a global brand is tied as much to the inspiration drawn from local talent as to that stemming from global trends. This is why it’s important for us to stand behind initiatives that offer us the opportunity to sponsor young local talent

Design Terminal received multiple international awards in 2014. The most important of these is the european enterprise promotion award, awarded jointly by the european Commission and the member states’ minis-tries responsible for economic policy—Design Termi-nal’s incubation activities were recognized by the jury during the Spring final. This wasn’t, however, the only feedback our institution received from the European Commission, as—along with only 4 other institutions of its kind—Design Terminal was invited to join the professional team working on the development of the 2014-2020 Creative Europe program supporting cul-tural industries.

In Autumn of 2014, Google, the Financial times, the visegrád Fund and Polish research institute Respubli-ca compiled a list of Central-Europe’s most import-ant pioneers. Hungarians selected for inclusion on the new europe 100 list were: the founders of prezi, ustream, logmein, Bridge Budapest and K-monitor, Bertalan meskó, medical futurist—and the Director General of Design Terminal.

international acclaim

Such strong emphasis on the promotion of the creative sector is perfectly in line with the current European Commission’s strategies of development. The innovative nature of the projects supported by Mr. Böszörményi-Nagy’s Design Terminal makes it one of the most important organizations of its kind in Central Europe.– New europe 100

In accordance with the commitment stated in the strategy of Design Terminal, our institution reports on initiatives planned in the framework of activities contained in the strategy, that, for some reason, did not come to fruition or had less than satisfactory re-sults, as well as management decisions that proved to be incorrect. The “failure report”, as it is known in English-speaking countries, is presented as part of the annual report.

• we did not succeed in finding an appropriate mission for Design Terminal’s advisory Board, established in early 2014. Planned regular meetings of this board, initially meant to support and evaluate the organiza-tion’s strategic decisions externally, were cancelled a number of times and its members were not suffi-ciently integrated to allow them to leverage their sig-nificant multidisciplinary know-how and experience during the everyday operations of the institution.

Failures

• we did not succeed in increasing the grant funding of Design Terminal’s projects to the extent planned. Although we did partially explore international grants (not restricted to the European union) with long-term promise, no substantial external (non-sponsor) grant income apart from some smaller amounts was received by any of our projects.

• design Terminal’s education program for children and high school students did not prove sustainable. Although both of these programs received positive feedback from participants in the experimental phase, the internal allocation of our funds did not make it possible for us to compile a comprehensive meth-odology to serve as a basis for the development of these experiments into professional services in case of either of these initiatives.

Based on the strategic partnership agreement signed in 2013 by Design Terminal and hungarian interchurch aid (HIA), this year, we again placed particular empha-sis on our philanthropic activities. Creative industry experts invited by Design terminal held special work-shops to improve valuable skills in the framework of hia’s program to support the labor market reintegra-tion of underprivileged families. We pledged all ticket

proceeds from october’s Central european Fashion Days to this same program. In 2014, we organized three skill development workshops for underprivileged chil-dren participating in hia’s own programs. as a high-light of December’s AT Christmas fair, we again or-ganized our charity design auction—pledging all proceeds from the sale of the design objects donated by designers to HIA.

we have taken the first steps towards exceptional transparency going far beyond what is required by law—a goal also stated in Design Terminal’s strat-egy, in place since November 2013. the system of rules and guidelines, composed in collaboration with

renowned external experts, that will make access to public information regarding the administration and accounting of the institution more straightforward while also widening the scope of information available, will be complete by early 2015.
