Professional Lighting Design and

the Lighting IndustryAs I write this column, I have just returned from Copenhagen in Denmark where I attended the bi-annual Professional Lighting Design Convention (PLDC); a gathering of more than 1400 participants from all over the world. Estimations indicate that about one third are actual lighting designers with the others being lighting manufacturers, suppliers, designers from related disciplines such as architects together with students, educators and researchers. It is easy to see that the mixed background, combined with various country cultures provided a rich melting pot for entertaining and educational presentations. Here is a review of the event that was held for the 4th time since its historical inception in 2007.

The format of the event consists of conferences spread over a 3-day period and divided over a wide range of topics that fall under four main categories; lighting application and research, lighting application case studies, sustainable lighting design and professional practice issues. This means that four conferences basically run in parallel, providing the participants with a bit of a challenge in choosing the subject presentation they are interested in. It could happen that a few interesting subjects may run at the same time. However, each morning and afternoon started with a common keynote address, attended by everyone, given by a unique speaker generally from a non-lighting background, providing an outsider’s view on the importance of lighting as viewed by these specialists. In this convention, we had keynote addresses from architects, with special interests in day-lighting, artists specialised in urban lighting projects, a visual lighting effects specialist from movies such as Gravity, Transformers and Avatar, as well as the Danish Minister for Climate, Energy and Building with a very keen interest in lighting. While it is very educational to hear from your peers’ experiences in regards to issues related to professional lighting design, these keynote speakers provide a much appreciated inspiration for issues closely related to the lighting profession.

I was selected as one of the speakers and had chosen a subject that turned out to be close to many participants’ hearts. My paper, called the LED Cowboys and Czars and how they have complicated our profession of lighting design, drew many supportive reactions from the industry. In my paper, I relate to the LED sales people as the Cowboys and the LED manufacturers as the Czars. Caught in an amazing and one could say explosive, technological development cycle, with new improvements from light output efficiency to colour quality coming out every other day, it is not surprising that the lighting industry in general, and we as lighting designers in particular, find ourselves in an ever changing world where today’s information seem to be overtaken or obsolete tomorrow! Trying to find your bearings and providing reliable solutions to our clients in this fast moving environment is challenging to say the least.

Keeping up with this incredible technological development speed is a challenge to say the least. Not only as manufacturers and sales people, but also for us as lighting designers and specifiers! Where in the past the typical development cycle of a new lighting product would be about 2 years, the developments in LED technology has seen the cycle brought back to only 6 months! This is very similar

to consumer products like smart phones for example. And in very similar fashion, new versions make the older ones obsolete in a very short time. Like we have the iPhone 5 today; the older versions are seen as out-dated and old hat. Who still has an iPhone 2? We now see the same thing happening with LED lighting with performance and feature upgrades happening every other day it seems. It is not surprising that LED sales people are under tremendous pressure to sell and acquire market share and because LED has opened up a lot of new application technologies, we also see a host of new players selling LED lights on the market as well - people who previously had no experience in lighting at all. Meanwhile, the traditional lighting manufacturers are struggling to convert their age-old production lines (built for conventional lighting systems) into the fast-paced LED demands.

We as specifiers are in a double fit, not only because what we specify today maybe obsolete tomorrow, but also because the enormous “social” pressure to be sustainable and the common view that specifying LED lighting is “sustainable”. The reality is a bit different. LED is not the only lighting solution; in fact there are many applications where traditional lighting technology using fluorescent or gas discharge light fittings are still more efficient and cheaper! However, the big manufacturers are pushing en bloc to convert everything to LED technology and if the predictions are correct, more than 90% of available lighting will be LED only by 2020. That puts us lighting designers/ specifiers in a difficult spot as even if conventional lighting systems may still be more cost and energy efficient in some applications, what good is it to specify these if the lights may no longer be made available in the future!

Cree, Inc. has introduced the new XLamp® XQ-E LED family, enabling l ighting manufacturers to signif icantly

reduce the size and total cost of their LED luminaires without sacrif icing l ight output, eff icacy or rel iabi l i ty. The new game-changing LED packs the l ighting-class performance of the XP-E2 into a package that is 78 percent smaller. The XQ-E LED family opens up new design possibi l i t ies for a wide spectrum of l ighting applications such as portable, indoor directional, architectural and vehicle l ighting. “Cree’s new XQ-E LEDs are changing the way we view LEDs. No other LED manufacturer offers an LED of this small size with such a high level of performance,” said Luke Thorki ldsen, director of l ighting division, The Coleman Company, Inc. “We’re excited about the new possibi l i t ies for smaller, l ighter or brighter designs enabled by the new XQ-E LED.” The new XQ-E LEDs have a t iny 1.6mm x 1.6mm footprint and are avai lable in both white and color configurations. The XQ-E’s combination of optical symmetry, consistent

design across al l configurations and its small size enables improved color mixing and optical control compared to the larger XP-E2 LED. “Previously, the size of LEDs dictated the form factor of the luminaire and l ighting manufacturers had to design around the l ight source,” said Paul Thieken, director of LED Components, Cree. “With its unparal leled performance and size, the XQ-E LED redefines what’s possible with l ighting designs, enabling new form factors and el iminating constraints.” Built on Cree’s revolutionary SC3 Technology™ Platform and characterized at 85°C, the XQ-E White LED is avai lable in 2700K to 6200K color temperatures and offers minimum CRI options of 70 and 80. worLD’s first-EvEr oLED showrooM now in nEw york city

On October 29th, French OLED l ight ing company BLACKBODY opened i ts New York City showroom

in SoHo, making remarkable new OLED technology accessible to American architects and the inter ior design communit ies.

OLEDs, Organic Light-Emitt ing Diodes, offer unparal le led l ight ing solut ions. The l ightweight, ul tra- f lat, glare- free, shadow- free and heat- free technology can be used to create inspir ing designer indoor or outdoor l ight f ixtures. Unl ike convent ional l ight bulbs, OLED l ight sources emit 100% useful l ight. OLED al lows larger surfaces of l ight to be created, shaped and manipulated. As wel l as increasing opportunit ies for design, OLED technology is clean with 0% pol lut ing components. OLEDs are used by automotive and medical equipment manufacturers, and OLED displays are current ly being introduced to the market for cel l phones and televis ions.

“With no shadows, glare, or heat, OLED f ixtures provide soft, f latter ing and welcoming l ight. The romantic l ight ing, when incorporated into dramatic designs, creates a breathtaking display hardly accessible to other electronic l ight ing opt ions,” said Alessandro Dolcetta, Co- Founder of BLACKBODY.

The new showroom wi l l be dedicated to creat iv i ty and wi l l exempl i fy the myriad of designer l ight ing opt ions made possible by the BLACKBODY’s OLED technology. Vis i tors can experience the possibi l i t ies of this new technology to provide a unique ambiance for execut ive lobbies, off ices, hotels, and pr ivate homes.

The showroom presents several products designed by major European designers. Thierry Gaugain, the Blackbody art director, has made signi f icant contr ibut ions to the current col lect ion as wel l as to the design of this f i rst showroom.

“OLED technology br ings l ight ing design to a new level,” said Bruno Dussert- Vidalet, Co- Founder of BLACKBODY. “With the opening of our New York City showroom, we are glad to be introducing this new l ight to American designers and architects and are excited to see how they wi l l integrate this technology in their work.”

The opening was co- hosted by internat ional design magazine Intramuros and supported by WantedDesign, a creat ive and col laborat ive platform for the design community, witha four day design celebrat ion in May as wel l as year long program of conversat ions, workshops, and special events.

The presence of BLACKBODY founders, Bruno Dussert- Vidalet and Alessandro Dolcetta, and BLACKBODY art director, Thierry Gaugain, demonstrates the benef i t of a frui t fu l col laborat ion between science and design.

3M introduced one of the f i rst LED A19 lamps approved for enclosed

f ixtures in commercial appl icat ions. 3M, a global pioneer in l ight and heat management solut ions, manufactures the LED A19 lamps in the U.S. with U.S. and global ly sourced components.

Light ing professionals and faci l i t ies managers now have energy-saving l ight opt ions thanks to the new LED Advanced Light for commercial appl icat ions from 3M. The combinat ion of excel lent heat management, energy eff ic iency and longevity makes the new l ight ideal for di ff icult-to-reach f ixtures, enclosed luminaires and many other

commercial appl icat ions. The new l ight recreates the br ight, even glow of an incandescent bulb, but uses up to 80 percent less energy and can last up to 25 years, with a potent ia l savings of up to $140 of electr ic i ty over a single bulb’s l i fet ime*. In addit ion, the new A19 LED lamp from 3M is independently tested and approved for use in a total ly enclosed luminaire.

3M LED Advanced Light for commercial appl icat ions bui lds on the proprietary “ l ight guide” technology used in the resident ia l 3M LED l ight f i rst introduced last year which netted 3M the Gold 2013 Edison Award in Energy/Light ing for the resident ia l bulb. Light Management is one of 3M’s 40-plus core technologies bui l t on researchers’ expert ise in opt ical science. The 3M LED Advanced Light for commercial appl icat ions also includes advanced heat management, making i t ideal for enclosed f ixtures such as cei l ing mount f ixtures and sconces. The new LED lamps are avai lable in soft white (3000 K) or cool white (4000 K) and join a fami ly of LED products from 3M that include spot l ights, f lood l ights and accent l ights.

“Saving signi f icant dol lars is now as easy as changing a l ight bulb,” said Jeff Boehm, 3M Electr ical Markets Div is ion nat ional sales manager. “By apply ing innovat ive 3M advancements in heat and l ight management, we’re able to offer l ight ing professionals and faci l i t ies managers an energy-eff ic ient opt ion for inter ior l ight ing that uses up to 80 percent less energy than incandescent l ights whi le retaining the qual i ty of l ight and shape of tradit ional bulbs.”

Further, because i t is based on LED, not compact f luorescent l ight (CFL) technology, the 3M LED advanced l ight offers “ instant-on” i l luminat ion and can be used with a var iety of dimmers. Unl ike CFL bulbs, the 3M LED lamp contains no mercury.

“The 3M LED Advanced Light is also a great example of how 3M was able to leverage our roots in R&D and manufactur ing to respond to regulatory changes around l ight ing eff ic iency and develop a ground-breaking solut ion,” added Boehm.

The Photon Project is a groundbreaking scientif ic study init iated by glass engineering company Cantif ix, and Oxford University, to explore in detai l the effects of l ight on the biological clock – which in turn affects the health, wellbeing, mood and behavior of each of us.

The stunning glass pod instal lat ion showcased at London Design Festival invites the public to experience ‘ l i fe under glass’ and take part in a series of simulations that measure levels of alertness or relaxation in different l ight sett ings – i l lustrating the future research plans. Within the Photon Pod, visitors can also interact with Phil ips Hue providing a personal l ight experience. Tuneable white l ight from Hue can be control led via a simple app to instantly match the mood and moment, and through pre-sett ings l ight can be set to help concentrate, relax or energize. The Photon Project and its founders at Cantif ix share the bel ief that the results of the research can potential ly contribute to improving the l ives of mil l ions, through new standards and l ight-related solutions for al l sorts of bui ldings.

Phil ips is a pioneer in the f ield of connected l ighting and has already carried out extensive research into the biological effects of l ight, which resulted in proven solutions on the

market: from Phil ips SchoolVision, which showed how l ight improves chi ldren’s learning; to Phil ips HealWell, which proved that different l ight sett ings enhance patients’ sleep, mood and overal l hospital experience.

Sean Carney, Phi l ips Chief Design Off icer, wi l l attend the Photon Project’s symposium at the London Design Fest ival and speak about the future possibi l i t ies of l ight. Sean comments: “With Phi l ips Hue, we are only beginning to understand the endless creat ive possibi l i t ies digita l l ight ing wi l l br ing. As we acquire new insight into the physiological and psychological effects of l ight, programmable digita l l ight sources such as Hue wi l l a l low us to apply l ight in ever more meaningful ways. Whether support ing our bodies’ own natural balance by simulat ing dayl ight or achieving something much deeper, promoting feel ings of wel lness.”

Speaking at the launch of the Photon Project, Brent Richards, award winning architect and designer responsible for the concept and implementation of the Photon Project and unique design of the Photon Pod says: “Understanding how people feel in different l ight sett ings means applying designed l ight in ways that harmonize with natural l ight and benefit people when they’re at home, at work – and anywhere else, at any t ime. Phi l ips Hue is much more than a lamp with mood sett ings – it is the t ip of the iceberg of what we can do with more dynamic l ighting, as the Photon Project wil l show.”
