Taste, Tour“Agritourism” is one of those fascinating phrases. It only recently entered our vocabulary. Yet, it really is just a new word for an old idea … getting back in touch with the land that sustains us.

Agritourism means many things to many people. For some, it’s about waking at dawn to help a farmer with the harvest. For others, it simply means savoring a local Chardonnay at a scenic winery, or buying produce at a farmers market.

The great news is that agritourism is all of that — and more! Whether it’s popping a just-picked berry in your mouth or marveling at thousands of splashing finger-lings in a trout hatchery, the common denominator is that “agri-adventures” help us reconnect with the land.

We hope that you have the time of your life as you explore the new North Georgia Farm Trail. Eat, drink,

stay, experience — and maybe even get a little dirt on your knees. What-ever you do, savor the experience! But be sure to visit GaFarmTrail.com before you go for the most up-to-date information.

U-Pick, U-Eat!

Long before "organic" and "natural" became marketing buzz words, North Georgia growers understood the value

of locally grown produce.

T here’s just no beating “farm fresh” — whether you’re picking plump blueberries at a local berry

patch or choosing vine-ripened tomatoes at a road-side farmers market. When you buy your produce straight from the honest soil of a farm or orchard, you are simply getting better-tasting, fresher fruits and veggies. And you’ll find plenty of pick-your-own opportunities along the North Georgia Farm Trail. Of course, there’s no rushing Mother Nature, so be sure to check GaFarmTrail.com for up-to-the-minute picking schedules and hours of operation.

Ripe & Ready for PickingLate April–May: Strawberries — Need a reason to pick your own strawberries? Consumer Reports says store-bought strawberries have so much pesticide and fungicide residue, that they don’t recommend you eat them! Hint: It takes 10-15 minutes to pick a quart of strawberries.

May–June: Cherries — Sweet cherries normally ripen in the middle of June, and are commonly eaten by them-selves. Sour, or tart, cherries normally ripen from mid-July through August and are typically canned, frozen or used for cooking. Hint: Cherries have a short storage time; use them within 3 days of picking.

July–September: Blueberries — Pick several pints of blueberries, which can be frozen and used to make muffins, pancakes and desserts all year long. Hint: Once picked, blueberries do not continue to ripen, so choose only berries that are completely blue with no hint of red.

Late Summer: Peaches — Georgia’s namesake fruit is bursting with flavor and ready for market a little later in the summer. Hint: Pick your peaches with just a little “give” when gently pressed. And remember, peaches don’t ripen much after picking.

Late July–November: Apples — Starting with early sea-son McIntosh and Galas and ending with Pink Ladies and Fujis, mountain apples are some of the tastiest to be found (and picked!). Hint: Apples ripen from the outside of the tree toward the center, so apples on the outer branches will be ready first.

They lovingly make grits, cornmeal and flour the old-fashioned way — using the whole grain and processing at a slower speed to enhance taste and preserve vital nutrients. Local farmers provide the corn, and the wheat comes from Montana, where the cold climate and soil produce a high protein grain. Visitors can see their Three Grain Pancake Mix, Pioneer Porridge or Old Fashioned Speckled Grits being stone ground as they watch. Or, order online, and George and Cecilia will custom grind your order, hand-package it in a distinctive cotton cloth bag and ship it out the same day it’s ground. Either way, you’re in for a taste that’s as authentic as it gets!

In North Georgia, nothing is better than homemade biscuits slathered with hot sorghum syrup (this natural sweetener is also the perfect addition to gingerbread and oatmeal cookies). The process starts with fall cane-cutting. The cane is run through a masher and then filtered into a steaming vat, where it’s cooked off until it becomes sweet golden syrup. The Hughes family welcomes visitors to the syrup mill during the fall processing season — just fol-low your nose to the sweet, steamy smell of sorghum in the air!

Natural Attractions

Agritourism is more than just enjoying good things to eat. It's also about connecting to the land with exciting adventures you just can't do "back home."

Now, “adventure” certainly means different things to different folks. But the beauty of an

agri-adventure is that your experience can be any-thing from snuggling up close to a friendly alpaca to saddling a spirited quarter horse for a ride through mountain valleys. In between, you can explore pet-ting farms, trout hatcheries, nurseries, mazes and more. It’s all about trying new things … and expe-riencing the land in new ways! For help planning the ultimate adventure, check the GaFarmTrail.com website.

Itinerary: Indulge Your Inner “Foodie”If you go hungry along the North Georgia Farm Trail, it’s your own fault! Start your day with a visit to one of our farmers markets for fresh fruit and veggies. Pick up some local sourwood honey, sorghum syrup or home-made preserves to slather on fresh baked goods.

For lunch or picnic fixins’, stop by a local purveyor, such as Taste of Amish or the Blue Ridge Grocery. If you’re out wandering wine country, grab a bottle of wine at a local vineyard. For picked-fresh treats, head over to one of our many orchards for berries and peaches in the spring and summer, and crisp, delicious apples in the fall. BJ Reece Orchards, Mercier Orchards and Hillcrest Orchards also have farm stores with plenty of ice cold cider and other local delicacies.

Dinnertime is wide open, with choices from lakeside dining at The Oaks in Hiawassee to farm-fresh beef at Black Sheep Restaurant in Blue Ridge to fresh, local trout at Toccoa Riverside Restaurant in Blue Ridge. And before you head home, stop by Mountain Valley Farm or Logan Turnpike Mill for take-home goodies.

From Farm to Table

There's no better way to get a true taste of North Georgia than by eating at a farm-to- table restaurant or grabbing some local-grown groceries.

Eating local isn’t hard here in the mountains. With so many farm-fresh ingredients at their

fingertips, our area chefs artfully combine locally sourced products with classic Southern flavors for regional cuisine with a twist! You’ll enjoy heirloom vegetables, grass-fed beef, stone-ground grains, even regional wines and micro-brews. And when meals come straight from the farm to the table, every-body wins — from grower to chef to diner! Whether you’re a hardcore “locavore” or just want a fresh taste of regional cuisine, check the GaFarmTrail.com web-site for a list of farm-to-table restaurants, local favorites and unique dining experiences.

Whether you’re a history buff looking for a great meal or a serious foodie who appreci-ates historic surroundings, The Farm Table Restaurant is the perfect place. Located inside the Tabor House (circa 1890) just off the square in Ellijay, The Farm Table stays true to its name by utilizing

local, seasonal foods and historic recipes. Chef Jane strives to make her guests feel as though they are at Grandma’s, with vintage embroidered tablecloths, mis-matched plates and silver, and local art on the walls. After your meal, venture into the adjoining Civil War Museum and explore the artifacts from the American Indian Trail of Tears.

Here, you can settle in to one of three intimate indoor dining rooms, savor a craft-brewed Black Sheep Dark/Light at the rustic bar, or spill out onto the covered deck for al fresco dining. Pour It On!

This may be the Peach State, but grapes are the passion among our award-winning

vineyards and wineries.

Wine making has long been a traditional art form in these mountains (just ask anyone

who has been fortunate to sample some homemade blackberry wine!). In fact, before Prohibition, Geor-gia ranked sixth in wine production among U.S. states. These days, it’s American and European wine grapes — not scuppernong — at the heart of the premium regional wines being produced by our area vineyards and wineries. North Georgia’s wine makers are always hosting tastings, tours, live music and special events throughout the year. Visit GaFarm Trail.com for events and hours of operation.

Wine Tasting Tour TipsPace yourself — Enjoy a snack and cleanse your palate with each of your tastings.

Plan a meal — Allow for a relaxing meal in between your tasting room stops. Bring a picnic lunch or enjoy a dining room experience.

Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate! — Drink a sip of water for every sip of wine. Your body (and mind) will be happier, and you will be able to refresh your taste buds.

Purchase some favorites — Wineries spend money to staff their tasting rooms. In return, guests should expect to purchase wines or accessories.

Like your apple juice a little, well … harder? Try the tasting room at Mercier Orchards

for natural apple wines made in the old cider

style. It’s not your Grandma’s cider!

Spotlight on: Serenberry Vineyards

Savor the day at a local vineyard!

Have you discovered this new gem in the North Georgia mountains? Serenberry Vineyards, a farm winery tucked away down an unassuming road off Highway 60 in Morganton, beckons you to pause and appreciate the simple things in life. The structure that houses the Tasting Room dates back to the 1920s when it stood as a barn. You can still see the original barnwood that silently connects you to a bygone past. The grape vines, growing only a stone’s throw away, will remind you of the changing seasons; as an active participant in nature, they always have something unique to share. Throughout the wine making process — from the vine-yard to the moment the wine is enjoyed — the focus is on balance. While this term certainly describes the wines offered at Serenberry Vineyards, it also embodies

the belief that “wine is best when paired with good friends.” It definite-ly feels like life moves a little slower at this charming farm winery located on the outskirts of Blue Ridge. Whether you choose to relax on

the patio or stroll through the vineyard accompanied by a glass of your favorite wine, you can take in nature the way it was meant to be — one sip at a time!

The wineries and vineyards of North Georgia are the perfect destination for a weekend getaway or even just a day trip. Tasting room hours vary, so be sure to visit

GaFarmTrail.com for current hours and events.

Itinerary:Take a Wine WanderHit the trail — the wine trail that is — and discover a dozen unique vineyards and wineries along a scenic trail winding throughout the mountains of North Georgia and into Western North Carolina. Sponsored by the Mountain Wine Country Cooperative, the trail wanders through two states, but you can easily visit several wineries in a day — or make a weekend out of it! The season comes into full bloom in April with Bud Break Weekend. Later, most wineries host live music, tastings and special events throughout the summer and fall. Note that regulations relating to wine sales differ from area to area. Most wineries fea-ture a tasting room, but sales may be available by the glass at some vineyards, and only by the bottle at others, and some only on certain days. Be sure to visit MountainWineCountry.com for hours of operation and upcoming events. You can also download a map of the wine trail with infor-mation on participating wineries.

celebrated by the many museums, heritage sites and living history farms along the North Georgia Farm Trail. Stop in to explore the artifacts, hear the stories and experience life in another place and time! Unlike commercial attractions, many museums and heritage sites operate on limited schedules — particu-larly during the offseason. Discover Georgia’s Farmer Poet

In the 1940s and 50s, farmer-turned-writer Byron Herbert Reece received national acclaim for his four

volumes of poetry and two novels. But the hardscrabble existence of a bottomland farmer took its toll. Ravaged by tuberculosis, Reece took his own life at age 40. The Reece family farm has been preserved as a heritage cen-ter that celebrates the writer’s love of nature and his attachment to the land. Located just south of Blairsville along scenic Hwy. 129, the Center includes five farm buildings and 13 interactive exhibits of Appalachian life during Reece’s time. The Poetry Plaza captures moving verses by Reece inscribed on four rock pillars. Also pre-served is the poet’s writing studio, along with photo-graphs, books and copies of Reece’s writings. A stroll along the sparkling waters of Wolf Creek will take you to the spacious pavilion, which can be rented for wed-dings, family reunions and other group activities.

Despite the steep terrain, early settlers managed to eke out a living — often growing products that had to be taken to a mill and "cracked" before use, reportedly

earning farmers the name "cracker."
