COVID -19 (CORONA)AN A #YURVEDA APPROACH
AND DIETETICS
Dr.L.Mahadevan, BAMS,MD,Ph.D.
Dr.K.Sheik Farith, BAMS.
Disclaimer
Many queries regarding the corona virus has been constantly asked by the A#yurveda student community. So far, we have not treated any Covid 19 positive patients. However, conditions with similar symptoms and infections associated with lungs have been treated successfully. This disease indicates a predominance of va#ta kapha or kapha va#ta dos8a#s.This is an effort to share our understanding and experience in treating similar conditions using A#yurveda concepts for the A#yurveda student community only and not a replacement to a physician’s direct examination and treatment. This is not a government approved treatment protocol for Covid-19. Those intending to understand the A #yurveda s$a#stra will find this useful. Our interpretation and opinion stand subjected to corrections.

IntroductionWe are aware that corona virus particularly Covid 19 transmission
originated in Wuhan, China. At a time when the Covid 19 situation
seemed in control in china has once again shown an increase in the
number of positive cases. The incubation period (the active carrier
state of the virus) is found to be 14 days from the time of contact.
Although, the common symptoms of hyperthermia (increased body
temperature), cough, pneumonia, dry throat indicates an affliction
in the Pra#n8avahasrotas, renal failure and irregular cardiac rhythms
are also observed. It is at this phase of the disease, critical care with
ventilators become indispensable.
COVID -19 (CORONA) AN AYURVEDA APPROACH AND DIETETICS 5
Dr. L. Mahadevan & Team
How long can self-isolation be a solution? Shouldn’t physicians
cater to patients? What happens to life sustenance? Shouldn’t
we seek to identify patients? Is it just enough to address fever
alone? Such questions definitely have been raised.
Corona virus is certainly threatening. Wearing a mask is
mandatory. Washing the hands thoroughly, safe disposal of
the masks etc., have been constantly emphasized. The world
has witnessed the plague and so has it seen the smallpox.
This is called as janapadodvamsam in A#yurveda. As a general
hygiene care, keeping the hands clean, avoiding proximity
to those afflicted with cough and cold, use of elbows while
sneezing, refraining direct care for wild and farm animals for a
short period of time are recommended. Thorough wash of meat
before cooking, bathing or washing hands after spending time
withpet animals, contact a nearby doctor if any symptoms are
noticed, avoid spitting out in public are common precautions
known to all now.

A#ca#rya Caraka’s janapadodvamsam has been talked
about by many. “Samkra#manthinara#nnaram”
“Aupasargika Rogam” - Here, they have mentioned
specifically about human to human transmission.
It is a must to wash the hands before and after a meal, after a sneeze, after touching any
surface and after using the toilet. The co-operation of the people is important. A fear has
certainly been instilled in the people. However, lack of responsibility still prevails.
An obedience in public places are seldom seen.Without the co-operation of the people ,
handling a grave situation as this is questionable. People are aware but not responsible
yet. Although, many kas8a#ya#s on the basis of A#yurveda concepts can be addressed for this
disease, government approved research is certainly required. A conflicting scenario prevails
with few modern medical practitioners completely rejecting A#yurveda and a few others
overwhelming us with appreciation.

DETAILS ON INFECTIOUS DISEASESA#ca#rya Sus8rutha mentions
PRASAN*GA#TH - Coitus
GA#THRA SAMSPARS$A#T - Touch from person to person
NIS 8WA#SA#TH – Breath , cold , cough and sneeze
SAHA BHOJANA#T – Eating unhygienic food with those afflicted with
diseases
SAHA S8AYYA# – Using the bed or pillow or bedcover of the infected.
SAHA A#SANA#TH – Using the same seat as those of infected (this is
seen in public transports like bus, train, aeroplanes, etc..,). This can
also cause disease transmission.
GANDHAM - using fragrances , accessories and clothes as those of
the infected.

Vaidya#s should certainly be well read in the treatment of Jvara. Relevance to the strength of the individual is seen mentioned in various texts on the treatment of jvara.
“BALA#DHIS 8TA#NAM A#ROGYAM,
A#ROGYA ARTHA#TH KRIYA# KRAMAHA”
is a well-known verse to all.
Every medical professional has made an attempt to understand this disease and have developed treatment hypothesis and a prophylactic protocol.
The ministry of AYUSH has requested the A#yurveda practitioners to make their contribution at this critical period. In Kerala, an integrated approach has been created by all the top physicians. They have also had a discussion based on the tridosha siddha#ntha to categorize the condition.
CASES THAT CAN BE ADDRESSED BY AN
A#YURVEDA PHYSICIAN AT THIS PHASE:
1. COVID19 negative cases
2. Quarantined Patients due to contact with
a positive case.
3. Patients with mild symptoms
4. Patients after recovery
5. Infection exposed individuals – commu-
nity service providers, police personnels,
utility vendors, staffs.

• At a time like this, the lifestyle takes a huge stake
as physical activity reduces, and snacking becomes
more common. It is advisable to reduce unnecessary
snacking at odd times of the day and night.
• Fried food is best avoided and intake of food when
hungry is recommended.
• Eating dry fruits, almonds and fruits are suggested.
• Diabetic patients should avoid intake of fruit juices.
• For those with random blood sugar levels below
200 mg/dl, can take one banana a day. Also, it is
important to avoid gruels (called yava#gu in A#yurveda)
must be avoided.
• Fruits like papaya, guava, pomegranate, apple, pear
can be taken in moderation.
• Reducing the food quantity by a quarter is
recommended.

• Vegetarianism should be followed and eating non vegetarian food at
night should be avoided. Finish your meal within 7 pm – 7 30 pm at
night.
• Adding dry ginger powder in food is important as it maintains the Agni
(the digestive fire) to function at its best. Sama #gni(A balanced digestive
fire) is an indicator of health and thereby, is responsible for immunity.
A sluggish digestive activity shows antagonistic action leading to
disease manifestation.
• A chutney of amla, ginger is beneficial.
• Green gram has to be sufficiently added in diet. Black gram is to be
best avoided as it has the quality of Abhis8yandi.
• A measured use of black gram, curd, sesame seeds, fish is advisable.
• Diet must be planned based on the digestive capacity.
• Avoid intake of pickles and oily food substances.
• A#yurveda recommends the use of Toya Kalpana – a process of boiling
water with herbal medicines. This water is strained and par taken.

Use of ginger, coriander seeds, tulasi leaves, hr8beram, musta#, parn8a yava#ni,
ajamoda, turmeric is a good example for this type of preparation.
• Increased intake of coffee and tea develops sour medium in the body.
• Dry Ginger coffee (Commonly called chukkukaapi) is recommended. It is a
carminative and cleanses the channels. Similar drink prepared with coriander
seeds (dha#nyaka), and tulasi (basil leaves) are also beneficial.
• Cow’s milk should be diluted and taken. Milk with dry ginger and turmeric
powder are recommended. The ministry of AYUSH named this as the golden
milk. Goat’s milk is seldom used however its beneficial.
• During hot seasons, intake of water from mud pot infused with sa#riva roots
are beneficial.
• Use of buttermilk with rock salt, ginger and curry leaves can be used both as
a drink and with food. Use of curd should be avoided especially at nights.
• Refrigerated coldwater intake must be avoided as it may lead to throat pain
• The three pillars of life include food, sleep and regulated coitus. Given the
importance of sleep, untimely sleeping habits must be avoided. Sleep during
the day is allowed only during the summer seasons. Sleeping during the day
increases body weight.
• Indulge in reading good books.
• Quality time with family should be allocated.
• Engage in cooking, painting, tailoring, gardening and sports.
• Include brushing the teeth at bedtime.

• Nasyam (medicated nasal instills) – Instilling drops of oil into the nostrils is
recommended. Two drops of An8u tailam can be instilled in each nostril. An8u tailam
is a medicated nasal oil that is available in all A#yurveda pharmacies. This can also
be replaced with coconut oil or sesame oil.
• Nasyam should be avoided if you are afflicted with cough, cold, fever, throat pain
and also during menstruation.
• Bathing immediately after food has to be avoided
• A minimum of 20 mins exercising is highly recommended.
• A practice in Yoga, Pra#n8a#ya#ma (breathing exercises) and meditation is beneficial

maintained. This has been well established by the government and the media.
• Fumes of turmeric, garlic, nirgun8d8i, mustard seeds, salt, vaca#, kus8t8a#, hari#taki should
be well dispersed in the house. Add few drops of ghee to this for best benefits.
Fumigation of Apara#jithadhu#pam has to done everywhere. It is believed to
cleanse the environment and destroy germs. This has been followed in all the
government hospitals of Kerala..
PREVENTIVE MEDICINE MANAGEMENT
APARA#JITHA DHU#PAM
• Healthy individuals do not need any medications.
• Following daily regime and the seasonal regime (dinacarya & r8tucarya) are
sufficient.

• To alleviate va#takapham, das8amu#la kat8utrayam kas8a#yam is best suited
• In intermittent fevers, bha#ran*gya#di kas8ayam is the best choice.
• In fevers of kapha dominance, vya #gra#dhi kas8a#yam is chosen. Pippali cu#r8n8am is used
as an adjuvant in this kas8a#yam.
• In pitta kapha dominant fever, gud8u#cya#di is chosen.
• Vyos$a#di vat8akam helps in alleviating kapha va #tam. In pitta predominance, it should be
avoided. The same holds good for ‘Ta#li #sa#di cu#r8n8am’also.
• Sitopala#di cu#r8n8am is given in pitta predominant condition. Vibhi #taki cu#r8n8am, again
acts in pitta predominance. Similarly, Yas8t8imadhu. These should be kept in mind.
• Confusion to categorise Covid 19 as va#takapham or kaphava#tam may occur.
• Depending on the avastha of the patient, the confirmation must be made. The site of
disease manifestation is Kapha stha#na. Symptoms infer a kaphava#ta predominance.
Both kapha and va#ta are s$ita (cold) in nature. Hence, treatment should be hot in
potency.
• This disease originates from a #ma#s$aya (stomach). Hence, medicines that are agni
di#pana should also be administered. S $odhana cikitsa cannot be done in this condition.
• Performing nasya karma in a #ma avastha is not suitable. Mala s$uddhi can be done in
those with no symptoms also. Morning at 8:30 am, 15 gm of avi#patthi cu#r#8n8am with hot
water should be taken. The following afternoon, rasam rice should be taken. This aids
in cleansing the intestines.
• Symptoms of pitta may also be presented. In that case, va #sa, gud8u#ci, yas8t8imadhu can
be used based on yukti.
• In single drug treatment, gud8u#ci, turmeric, pippali, yas8t8imadhu, tulasi, kira#tatiktam,
bhu#mi a#malaki show important characteristics.
• In the north of India, the use of maha#sudars$ana kha #d8a, Sams$amana vat8i and tr8bhuvana
