INFORMATION FROM COUNTRY LEVEL OFFICES
Brunei: Brunei has gone 35 consecutive days without additional cases of COVID-19; Brunei conducted
625 laboratory tests on 10 June- the highest number of diagnostic tests carried out in one day; to date,
23,293 tests have been completed.
‘Doa Kesyukuran’ ceremonies for solemnization will now be permitted, though only 20 to 30 people will be
allowed to attend the ceremonies at any one time.
A committee has been set up to discuss the possibility of establishing “green lanes” for international travel
once Brunei starts lifting its border controls, the health minister said in a press briefing on 11 June.
The number of BruHealth users has topped the government’s target of 80 percent public participation on
11 June, according to figures from the health ministry.
Indonesia: The state will issue guidance notes for religious education institutions and boarding schools (` 5million children) in the “New Normal” while Indonesian Red Cross branches have already received requests to support the disinfection works in those schools prior to the reopening. Around 28,000 Islamic schools with 18million students and 1.5million teachers across Indonesia are going to reopen before the end of July. Air passenger capacity will be stepped up gradually to 100 percent by implementing stringent health protocols at airports and in aircraft cabins, according to the Transportation Ministry. As of 12 June, Indonesia reported 35,295 confirmed cases, with 2,000 deaths and 12,636 recoveries.
Japan: On 11 June, the Tokyo Metropolitan Government lifted its “Tokyo Alert” that called for extra caution
amongst the public and businesses against a resurgence of COVID-19 infections. The government also
moved into the final phase of its three-stage roadmap for easing business suspension, as the number of
new daily cases of infection and unidentified transmission routes have remained stable and below the
monitoring threshold.
The Japanese Government is planning to allow businesspersons to enter in Japan from July, up to 250 per day from Viet Nam, Thailand, Australia and New Zealand. As of 11 June, Japan registered 17,090 confirmed cases with 15,200 recoveries and 922 deaths. Malaysia: From 3 April until 10 June, 51,422 overseas returnees have completed a 14-day quarantine: 555
positive cases have been reported.
From 12 June, the government of Perak will allow every obligatory (fard) prayer to be performed in
congregation at all mosques and suraus in the state. The number of congregants permitted have been
increased to 40 people.
SOP for schools re-opening have been released. From 24 June, secondary level students in major
examination years as well as their international equivalents can resume classes.
Maldives: As of 11 June, the Maldives reported 1,962 cases with 1,121 recoveries and 8 deaths. The state administration received assistance from Japan (US$5.6 million), the UAE ($5million), and China to strengthen health facilities to combat with new virus, and 20,000 testing kits from a private firm. The National Emergency Operations Centre (NEOC) is going to carry out random sampling tests amongst correctional officers, senior citizens, individuals living in congested communal buildings and those between 20 and 39 years old to identify the level of community spread.

The NEOC also announced the resumption of schools “at the earliest”. Some sources close to the Health ministry said that residents of the capital, Male, will be allowed to leave their homes without permits starting from 15 June. Domestic airports will be open, and restaurants and cafes can resume takeaway and delivery services.
Myanmar: The UN in Myanmar has handed over 73,000 test kits to the Ministry of Health and Sports and
its relevant laboratory facilities. The first batch of 3,000 test reagents provided by the World Health
Organization and its partners arrived in country late March.
The Access to Health Fund, funded by the United Kingdom, Sweden, United States and Switzerland and managed by the UNOPS has handed over more than 55,000 test kits in two separate batches, complemented by 20,000 more test kits procured by UNICEF, which were delivered in two batches during the last two months. The Access to Health Fund also delivered two automated sample extraction machines to the National Health Laboratory to improve the accuracy of testing. ILO offered immediate support to representative organizations of employers and workers to establish practical responses COVID 19. This included support to trade unions in setting up an “Emergency Employment and Reskilling Centre” for garment workers who were laid off; installing COVID-19 awareness billboards and delivering hand sanitizer, masks and pamphlets to factories. In addition, the ILO is conducting a survey of impacts and needs for Small Scale Enterprises (MEs) in target sectors (food processing, hotels and restaurants). The ILO is also researching SME training needs and is developing online versions of existing SME training products while designing new training products based on the identified needs. On the issue of labour migrants, the ILO together with labour and civil society organisations in coordination with the department of Labour and the Ministry of Health and Sports (MOHS) have provided personal protective equipment (PPE) for “frontline” service providers and care packages to the returning migrants at the Thai Myanmar border as well as in communities of origin (over 63,000 people have already benefitted from this support). Additionally, more than 50,000 individuals from 34 villages in Rakhine State have received PPEs from a 10 tons shipment and dozens of handwashing facilities managed and set up by the ILO. These projects have been supported by the Livelihoods and Food Security Fund (LIFT) managed by UNOPS and the Australian Department for Foreign Affairs and Trade, in partnership with the Rakhine State Government, the Department of Labour, and the Rakhine Youth Entrepreneurs Association.
Singapore: Tychan, a Singapore-based biotechnology company has received approval from the Health
Sciences Authority for the Phase 1 clinical safety trial to use an antibody that targets COVID 19 in healthy
volunteers.
Antiviral drug ‘Remdesivir’ has been conditionally approved for the treatment of severely ill COVID 19
patients. Other drugs used in clinical trials to treat COVID-19 patients include anti-HIV drugs ‘Lopinavir’
and ‘Ritonavir’.

Afghanistan: 748 new cases were reported on 11 June, bringing the total to 22,890.
Addressing lawmakers, acting minister of Finance on 10 June said that the World Bank and the international
community had pledged $300 million in assistance.

Bangladesh: 3,187 new cases and 37 new deaths were reported on 11 June, bringing the total cases to
78,052 and death toll to 1,049.
Prices of masks, gloves and PPE are set to drop as the government is waiving VAT in the proposed budget
for FY 2020-21; Allocation for mega projects under the Ministry of Road Transport and Bridges and Ministry
of Railways are facing fund cuts.
Cambodia: Minister of Health Mam Bun Heng on 10 June denied Vietnam’s claim that a Vietnamese youth
who tested positive for Covid-19 had come from Cambodia.
The European Union (EU) on 11 June announced it has mobilized €443 million (roughly $483 million) in
grants and loans to support Cambodia’s effort in dealing with the economic and social consequences of
COVID-19.
On 10 June, Prime Minister Hun Sen had a telephone conversation with Indian prime minister Narendra
Modi.
Local businesses have reacted with confusion over the new “expensive and strict” fixed-price quarantine
requirements for foreigners arriving in Cambodia which were announced by the Ministry of Economy and
Finance this week.
Fiji: 6 people will be tried in court on 12 June for breaching curfew restrictions.
India: 9,996 new cases and 357 new deaths were reported as of 11 June, bringing the total cases to
286,579 and deaths to 8,102.
India has lifted an export ban on hydroxychloroquine.
Iran: 2,238 new cases and 78 deaths were reported on 11 June, bringing the total to 180,156 cases and
8,584 deaths.
Laos: Japan has pledged more than US$3 million (more than 26.9 billion kip) to Laos to strengthen the
Covid-19 preparedness and response capacity.
Mongolia: 3 new cases were reported on 12 June, bringing the total to 197.
Nepal: 250 new cases were reported on 11 June, bringing the total to 4,614. Death toll remains at 15.
Private clinics, all kinds of agriculture and animal related businesses, stores that sell essential foodstuffs
and transport goods will be allowed to open immediately. Private vehicles are also allowed on the streets
from Friday onwards, on an odd-even basis.
Pakistan: 6,397 new cases and 107 deaths were reported on 12 June, bringing the total to 125,933 cases
and 2,463 deaths.
Budget deficit is expected to exceed the target of 7.5 percent of GDP and may go to 9.4 percent of GDP.
Parliamentary Secretary for Health Services Dr Nousheen Hamid said on 11 June that Pakistan was
conducting 27,000 COVID 19 tests every day while its 107 laboratories had the capacity to undertake
46,000 tests per day.
Papua New Guinea: no cases for the last 44 days.
The Parliament of the autonomous region of Bougainville has voted to extend the State of Emergency for
another 2 months.

Philippines: 443 new cases and 9 new deaths were reported on 11 June, bringing the total to 24,175 cases
and 1,036 deaths.
Interior Secretary Eduardo Año thinks it may be best to keep Metro Manila under general community
quarantine after June 15 to hold off a spike in COVID-19 infections.
PR China: 7 new cases- including one local transmission case (0 deaths) were reported on 11 June.
Taiwan: Taiwan has donated 500,000 surgical masks, 50,000 N95 masks, 20,000 isolation suits, and 5,000
protective gowns to the Philippines government and private sector organizations.
The National Taiwan University has urged the government to lift restrictions on foreign students.
ROK: 56 new cases and 1 death were reported on 12 June, bringing the total to 12,003 cases and 277
deaths.
The Ministry of Education on 12 June extended a measure to reduce classroom crowding. Elementary and
middle schools are required to cap the number of students at one-third and high schools at two-thirds
David Kaye, the UN special rapporteur on freedom of expression, positively evaluated South Korea's
transparent use of personal information for the purpose of tracing.
Sri Lanka: 8 new cases were reported on 11 June, bringing the total to 1,877, while the death toll stands
at 11.
The final decision on the re-opening of universities will be delivered on 13 June.
According to the Ministry of Foreign Relations, comprehensive measures taken by the Ministry, in close
coordination with key Government economic agencies and the private sector to address and mitigate the
impact of COVID-19 particularly on Sri Lankan exports, has helped in sustaining and regaining lost markets
for traditional Sri Lankan exports, while enabling new opportunities.
Thailand: Four more ‘imported’ cases were reported in Thailand on 12 June, which was zero a day before.
Currently, there are 3,121 cases including 2,987 (95%) recoveries and 58 deaths. No locally transmitted
cases reported over the last 18 days.
The state operator of intercity bus services has announced the recommencement the services on most of
their routes across the country; however, foreign travelers will not be allowed to board.
Classes will be split, and students will go to school on alternate days when the new term starts in July.
The government is likely to allow alcohol to be served at restaurants, to resume concerts and closed-venue
sports and saunas to reopen in the 4th phase of lifting restrictions from 15 June.
Vietnam: With no reported cases, the total remains at 332.
Vietnam Airlines has announced plans to reopen international air routes from 1 July to several destinations
in the Republic of Korea (RoK), Taiwan, Hong Kong and across Southeast Asia.

According to data compiled by the Anadolu Agency, a total of 12,454 health workers in the Asia-Pacific region have tested positive for COVID 19 and 171 have died. Chinese ambassador to ASEAN- Deng Xi Jun underlined China’s willingness to work ASEAN on the research and development of COVID 19 vaccines. Global
COVID-19 Raises Extreme Poverty: A document published by the United Nations University World
Institute for Development Economics Research (UNU-WIDER) calculates that the COVID 19 would push
an extra 395 million people into extreme poverty and increase the number of those living with less than
$1.90 a day worldwide to more than one billion. This document also says that under the worst scenario - a
20 percent contraction in per capita income or consumption - the number of those living in extreme poverty
could rise to 1.12 billion. The same contraction, applied to the $5.50 threshold among upper-middle-income
countries, could see more than 3.7 billion people - or just over half the world's population - live below this
poverty line.
Increased Child Labour: A new report coming from the International Labour Organization and UNICEF
highlighted that the current pandemic may push millions of children into child labour mostly in exploitative
and hazardous jobs.
The report further reads that vulnerable populations – like migrant workers and those working in the informal
economy –will be hit hardest.
COVID-19 Situation in Africa: The WHO Representative to Africa on 11 June said that the community
transmission has broken out across more than half of Africa's 54 countries and is moving fast. It took 98
days for the continent to reach 100,000 coronavirus cases, but within 18 days, it reached the second
100,000-marks.
Brazil: surpassed 800,000 cases with 30,412 new cases reported on 11 June; 40,919 deaths so far. Of the
total confirmed cases, 345,595 have recovered to date.
The state health administration has authorized 5,173 medical students who are nearing completion of their
studies to graduate to practice as doctors to tackle the current pandemic.
One leading biomedical research center (Butantan) announced an agreement with China’s Sinovac Biotech
Ltd to potentially produce a vaccine against COVID 19.
France: The number of new cases continued to drop. France is maintaining physical distancing and
protection measures – with the number of additional deaths down to its lowest figure since March. The
number of new admissions to emergency units was 20 in the last 24 hours and has not been above fifty in
the last three weeks.
France has reported 29,319 deaths and 192,493 cases to date.
Italy: With 379 new cases, the national tally increased to 236,142 with 34,167 deaths and 171,338
recoveries. The state authorities are working to reopen schools in September.
Russia: With 8,779 new infections recorded on 11 June, the country’s official number of cases rose to
502,436 including 6,532 deaths.
The state health authorities have distributed the first batch of ‘Avifavir’, to some hospitals.
St. Petersburg has a shortage of hospital beds for COVID 19 patients.

Russian Railways will resume regular service of high-speed trains between Moscow and St. Petersburg
starting 24 June.
Spain: The government has announced that the compulsory 14-day quarantine for overseas arrivals would
end by 1 July.
A total of 242,707 cases including 27,136 deaths and 150,376 recoveries have been reported to date.
UK: A leading epidemiologist from the Imperial College London said that the country's death toll could have
been halved if lockdown had been introduced a week earlier. The UK has more than 292,000 cases and at
least 41,300 deaths.
US: A vaccine for COVID-19 developed by biotech firm Moderna will enter the third and final stage of its
clinical trial in July with 30,000 participants.
The US reported 2,023,347 cases 113,820 deaths and 540,000 recoveries as of 11 June.
