Leading artifcial intelligence researchers have warned that an "AI arms race" could be disastrous or humanity, and are urging the UN to

consider a ban on "oensive autonomous weapons" An open letter published by the !uture o Lie Institute !LI# and signed by high$profle fgures

including %tephen &aw'ing, (lon )us', and Noam *homs'y, warns that weapons that automatically "select and engage targets without

human intervention" could become the "+alashni'ovs o tomorrow," ueling war, terrorism, and global instability "Artifcial Intelligence AI# technology has reached a

point where the deployment o such systems is  practically i not legally easible within years, not

decades," states the letter, citing armed -uadcopters a technology that has already been deployed in a very crude ashion# as an e.ample /he letter notes that although it0s possible that the use o

autonomous weapons could reduce human casualties on the battlefeld, this itsel

could be a mista'e as it would "1lower2 the threshold" or going to war "Unli'e nuclear weapons,
