NFC (Near Field Communication)

NFC enables close range communication with smartphones and other compatible devices. In 2019, over 80% of smartphones manufactured could read NFC natively (without the need for 3rd party apps). NFC’s ubiquity makes it perfect for consumer facing applications and instances where close range activation is ideal.

See “Benefits of NFC...” (Page 5)and “Appendix I: NFC 101” (Page 10)

RFID (Radio Frequency Identification)

RFID enables long range communication when read with RFID scanners. RFID’s robust, long distance capabilities have made it the leading electronic connected packaging technology for business value chain applications such as inventory management, supply chain tracking, and anti-the monitoring (EAS).

See “Benefits of RFID...” (Page 15)and “Appendix II: RFID 101” (Page 19)

SensorsA variety of sensors can be integrated into packaging to detect environmental (e.g. temperature) and physical (e.g. tampering) changes. Although not a “connected” technology, sensors can be combined with NFC, RFID, or even cellular devices, in order to communicate on-pack sensor information.

RFID’s long-range scanning capabilities enables instant identification and continuous monitoring of items throughout manufacturing, distribution, and sale.

RFID does not require line of sight between the reader and the RFID tag (radio frequencies can pass through objects). In addition, each scanner can read multiple RFID tags simultaneously.

Read ranges are dependent on the scanning device and the RFID tag utilized. Handheld scanners provide versatility, while fixed infrastructure scanners offer additional power and range.

Unlock the power of real-time asset data by connecting RFID scanners to internal systems.

Overview

NFC (Near Field Communication) is a wireless form of communication that allows data sharing within close proximity (e.g. a tap interaction).

No battery is required. An NFC tag is powered and activated wirelessly by the device reading it.

From a user standpoint, NFC works like magic. To interact, a user simply brings their phone within range of an NFC tag, and is instantly presented with the corresponding content. It is also a ubiquitous technology, working across devices from iPhone to Android.

CpaX™ Connected Packaging Solutions: Benefits of NFC & RFID for Packaging & Labels PG 16Jones Healthcare Group © All Rights Reserved 2020 |

What is NFC? Smartphone Compatibility

In 2019, over 80% of handsets (~2 billion devices) were estimated to have NFC capabilities. at number is expected to exceed 90% in 2020. is includes all of the latest iPhones and the vast majority of Android phones.

Growing Ecosystem

Beyond packaging, NFC is used in applications such as: POS payments (e.g. Apple Pay, Google Pay), smart cards (e.g. transit ticketing, access keys), and more. In 2019, ~$745b in transactions passed through mobile phones and NFC POS systems.

Packaging Integration

Jones Healthcare Group™ integrates a variety of NFC tag types into packaging and labels through proprietary packaging converting equipment that applies and verifies NFC tags in one pass. is enables us to produce NFC connected packaging and labels at high volumes and speeds.

An NFC tag can be hidden within the package or label itself. is means that an NFC connected package or label can look and function exactly like existing packaging or labels, with no disruption to your existing filling lines and processes.

iPhoneWhile most flagship Android devices have had full NFC support since 2012, Apple decided to be more conservative implementing the technology, waiting to introduce NFC until it found a solid consumer use-case. is use case came with the introduction of Apple Pay in 2014 and its subsequent commercial success.

In 2017, the introduction of iOS 11 brought NFC reading through 3rd party apps to the iPhone 7.

In 2018, Apple brought app-less NFC reading to the iPhone XS, XS Max and XR. is functionality is also found in the latest iPhone 11 and 11 pro/max models. In addition, NFC reading on these models cannot disabled by the user and is thus always available.

Can My Smartphone Read NFC?

Removing the friction of app installation and manual activation of NFC through system settings, signaled Apple’s embrace of the NFC tap interaction paradigm.

For NFC connected packaging, iPhone compatibility eliminated the last remaining hurdle to mass consumer adoption.

AndroidNFC became available on Android devices in 2012. Since then, the number of NFC compatible Android phones have exploded, making it hard to keep track of which are NFC-enabled.

A comprehensive list of devices can be found on Wikipedia. Search for “NFC compatibility Wikipedia” or visit the shortened URL below:

https://bit.ly/nfcdevices

Most Android phones have NFC activated by default, but gives users the ability to turn it off. If you are using an NFC compatible Android phone, but cannot read NFC, you may have to turn it back on. is is not an issue on iPhones, as NFC reading is always active, and cannot be turned off.

Can read NFCPhones released aer 2012. For a complete list, visit: https://bit.ly/nfcdevices

How to turn on NFC (usually activated by default)

1. On your Android device, tap on “Settings”

2. Select “Connections” or “Connected devices”

3. You should see “NFC” 4. Turn on NFC

Depending on your device, NFC may be located in a different folder. Open up the settings menu, tap the search icon on top, and type in “NFC”. If your phone has it, the NFC option will show up.

Basic NFC Tags

While its appearance may seem unimpressive, the power and flexibility of NFC comes from its simplicity.

is means that these tags can be used in places other technologies can’t, such as packaging or labels.

Tamper Evident NFC Tags

NFC tags with a sensor loop can be embedded within the opening feature of a package or product for irreversible tamper evidence.

Smartphones can read this type of tag to verify that a product was never opened.

NFC Tag + ??

NFC tags can be equipped with additional components to expand functionality.

E.g. combine environmental sensors (e.g. temperature, humidity) for persistent product integrity monitoring within each package.

Overview

RFID is an acronym for “radio frequency identification” and refers to a technology where digital data encoded in RFID tags is captured by a reader via radio waves. NFC is actually a type of RFID, but the term RFID usually refers to non-NFC tags.

RFID can be considered an AIDC (Automatic Identification and Data Capture) technology. AIDC methods can automatically identify objects, collect data about them, and enter that data directly into digital systems with little to no human intervention required.

What is RFID? How it works

At a simple level, RFID systems consist of three components: an RFID tag, an RFID reader, and an antenna. RFID tags contain an integrated circuit and an antenna, both used to transmit data to an RFID reader. e reader converts these radio waves to usable digital information. A communications interface transfers that information to a host computer system, where it can be stored and analyzed at a later time.

Different types of RFID tags each offer their own benefits (see next page “Types of RFID Tags”).

Packaging Integration

Jones Healthcare Group™ integrates a variety of RFID tag types into packaging and labels through proprietary packaging converting equipment that applies RFID tags in one pass. is enables us to produce RFID connected packaging and labels at high volumes and speeds.

An RFID tag can be hidden within the package or label itself. is means that an RFID connected package or label can look and function exactly like existing packaging or labels, with no disruption to your existing filling lines and processes.

Types of RFID Tags

CpaX™ Connected Packaging Solutions: Benefits of NFC & RFID for Packaging & Labels PG 21Jones Healthcare Group © All Rights Reserved 2020 |

Overview

RFID tags can be classified by the radio frequency range they use to communicate (low, high, ultra-high), and the way the tag communicates with the reader (active or passive).

Low Frequency (LF) RFID

LF systems operate in the 30 KHz to 300 KHz range, and have a read range of up to 10 cm. While they have a shorter read range and slower data read rate than other technologies, they are also the least sensitive to interference. LF tags are used in access control, livestock tracking, and other applications where a short read range is acceptable.

High Frequency (HF) RFID

HF systems operate in the 3 MHz to 30 MHz range and provide read ranges of 10 cm to 1 m. Common applications include ticketing, data transfer and payment. e NFC standard is based on HF RFID.

Ultra-High Frequency (UHF) RFID

UHF systems have a frequency range between 300 MHz and 3 GHz, offer read ranges up to 12 m, and have the fastest data transfer rates.

UHF tags are much cheaper to manufacture, and are commonly used in retail inventory tracking, pharmaceutical anti-counterfeiting, and other applications where large volumes of tags are required.

Active RFID

Active RFID tags have an onboard transmitter and power source that can significantly boost read ranges.

Passive RFID

Passive RFID tags do not have an onboard transmitter or power source and are powered wirelessly by the device that is reading it.

Battery Assisted Passive (BAP) RFID

BAP RFID systems, incorporate a power source into a passive tag configuration. e power source improves read distance and data transfer rates by ensuring that all of the captured energy from the reader can be used to reflect the signal.

RFID Readers and ermal Label Printers

Handheld RFID Readers

Handheld RFID readers are portable, designed to be lightweight and cordless. Handheld readers oen contain their own soware that translates RFID data to usable information and oen an integrated screen to display that information, reducing the need for additional middleware or equipment.

Many handheld readers offer “hot/cold” finding functionality, providing visual or audio cues as you near a specific item.

Portability and ease of use makes handheld readers ideal for tasks such as prescription drug or lab sample labelling, price verification, inventory scanning, compliance auditing, locating items or equipment, and instant data entry of multiple items.

Fixed Infratructure RFID Readers

Fixed RFID readers offer superior range and functionality but have higher installation requirements. Mounting, cables, and an external system to process the vast amount of data being captured are usually required.

A fixed reader can be “always on”, quietly collecting data continuously over large areas with little to no human intervention.

Superior range and continuous monitoring without human intervention makes fixed readers ideal for real-time inventory of large warehouse or distribution centers, anti-the monitoring, and tracking of items throughout manufacturing (particularly in instances where fixed readers can be installed over choke points or belt conveyor systems).

RFID ermal Label Printers

ese printers offer the ability to encode RFID data while simultanously printing one-color information (e.g. barcodes) onto RFID embedded thermal compatible labels.

Ideal where thermal labels are already used (e.g. pharmacy and hospital prescription labelling), and where RFID data must be applied on site. For example, enable item logging and monitoring through distribution by encoding and printing case labels with shipping information at time of pack-out.

Jones offers thermal printer compatible RFID embedded labels, pre-printed in full color (for branding, messaging, warnings, etc.), with blank areas for thermal application of variable data such as barcodes, shipping address, etc.
