CPC PARENT MORNING TEA

On Wednesday this week, Mrs Jennifer Reid shared with a number of the Broughton community her journey through cancer diagnosis, treatment and life after cancer. Mrs Reid often relates life to a cupcake, it is not always perfect but it is precious.

It was exciting to hear how Mrs Reid’s faith in God provided comfort and helped her to not just see the bad ways in which cancer affects ourselves and those we love, rather be strengthened

by the promises of God.

One of the verses she wrote in her journal during her cancer treatment was 2 Corinthians 12: 9-10

But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me. 10 That is why, for Christ’s sake, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong

Thank you to Miss Philpott for organising this special morning tea. The College is aiming to hold similar events in 2013.

MRS SHEERMAN – AUSTRALIAN TEACHER LIBRARIAN OF THE YEAR

Last Saturday evening, Mrs Alinda Sheerman was presented the award of ‘Australian Teacher Librarian of the Year’ by the Australian Schools Library at a dinner held in the World Square Function Rooms in Sydney. We congratulate Mrs Sheerman on being recognised for the outstanding contribution she has made to education at a school, State, National and International level.

THE WIZARD IS COMING - 2013 COLLEGE MUSICAL

Do you own ruby slippers to travel the yellow brick road?

Continuing with the College’s reputation for high quality musical and drama productions, I have the pleasure of announcing that we will be presenting the popular musical ‘The Wizard of Oz’ in June in 2013.

The Wizard of Oz is a title which immediately conjures in our minds the iconic characters, images and songs of this classic film that has transferred so brilliantly to the stage.

Based on the story The Wonderful Wizard of Oz by L. Frank Baum, published in 1900, the musical tells the story of Dorothy Gale, a Kansas farm girl who dreams of a better place, “over the rainbow”, and who, in the company of the Cowardly Lion, the Tin Man and

Scarecrow, encounters many adventures on her journey along the Yellow Brick Road.

This production is based on the 1988 Royal Shakespeare Company version that entranced audiences with a musical score that authentically captured the essence of, and even surpassed, the majestic original film score.

Further details relating to auditions and preparation for the Musical will be given in future newsletters.

GRIEVANCE POLICIES

At times, there are matters and issues that parents wish to raise with the College in relation to their sons or daughters. I appreciate parents raising their concerns, thus allowing us to work, in partnership, through the issues. I encourage parents to discuss concerns with us as early as possible so that problems can be addressed before they become major issues. The College Grievance Policy outlining the process for parents to raise concerns is available on the College Parents Intranet in the documents folder and a Summary of the Protocols may be found in the Student Information Handbooks Page 21 (Secondary School) or Page 23 (Junior School).

JUNIOR SCHOOL MRS C HALLORAN- HEAD OF THE JUNIOR SCHOOL

MESSAGE FROM THE HEAD OF JUNIOR SCHOOL

I know that I am not alone in thinking that this term and indeed this year is flying by so quickly. Please be reminded that next week, there are two Pupil Free Days on Thursday and Friday as the teachers are involved in Professional Development.

There are many exciting events happening over the last six weeks of term, particularly in the area of Music with Solo Nights, Year 3 Strings Concert, an in-school performance and our Whole School Christmas Spectacular! Mrs Bartlett has listed details of these events below and I thank her for her organisation in this area. We have some grades going on excursions

and the Infants’ swimming program continues. Year 6 have their Night of Notables and their special dinner, as we prepare to say farewell, as they move across campus to the Senior School. In sport, we had the NASSA Gala cricket day today, we have Ella and Jade from Year 6 competing in the CIS Gymnastics competition next week and of course there will be IPSSO summer finals.

On Monday, we welcome our incoming Prep and Kindergarten as they join us for a morning of Orientation. This is an extremely exciting time, and we hope our visiting children have a wonderful day with us. Please be prepared for a little extra traffic in the car park, as parents drop children of for this event. In the evening we will be having the parent session where Prep and Kindergarten staff will share aspects of their programs and give information on preparing children for Prep and Kindergarten.

YEAR 6 LEADERSHIP 2013

Yes, it is that time of year again; we have almost finished voting for our SRC (Student Representative Council) for 2013. Next year, we will have fourteen members. In mirroring the Senior School our Prefects will be responsible for either a grade or a Sporting House. Next week the Year 5 students will be informed as to who will be a Prefect. From these 14 students, those who wish to be considered for School Captain will be interviewed by Mrs Halloran, Mr O’Connor, Mrs Blockley and Mr Jones. From there the School Captains will be appointed. We will have a special investiture of our SRC later in the term. Our new Prefect body will shadow our current Year 6 Prefects over the coming weeks as they learn about their new role.

YEAR 5 ZOOSNOOZE CAMP

On 25 and 26 October Year 5 went on camp to Taronga Zoo. We left school at 1pm and set off to Balmoral Beach. While we were there we were looking at the shark nets, while also thinking about pollution. We walked up a hill and looked over the ocean and saw scuba divers. When we after afternoon tea, we played at a nearby oval, then, it was time to go to Taronga Zoo. We had a lesson on animals and saw a snake, a two-headed lizard and a phasmid. After that we had dinner, Annette (our education officer) and some of the other crew took us on the night walk where we saw dinosaurs and bush tailed possums, tigers, giraffes and zebras (FUN FACT: did you know that you can tell an Alpha male because of its bottom because it grows?) Then we got back to the campsite and had some fruit and iceblocks. We moved everything in the library (where we slept) then we set up our sleeping arrangements and got to play our iPods for 10 minutes, then Mrs Halloran turned out the lights. The next morning we had to get up at 5.30am and pack up all our stuff and get dressed, and have breakfast. We went on our day walk and saw all the animals, too many to name but some had some unusual and funny behaviours. Then we were left to tour the zoo on our own. Firstly we went to the monkeys they were funny to watch and then we went on sky safari, while on the sky safari we saw the well-known MR SHUFFLES. He is an elephant for anyone who does not know him he was with his family playing with his tyres. He was so cute! Then we got off and had to wait for the other groups to have their turn. Then we went to the seal show. We got front row seats. The seals are awesome. Alan Paradzik got drenched because he was training the seals and the seal jumped and wet him it was funny. After having a filling lunch we had to walk up all the hills again to get our bags and then we got on the bus and went back to school. We were all happy to be home and we all had an awesome time but were well satisfied with the camp that the teachers prepared for us, and a big thanks to Taronga Zoo you played a big part so thanks for having us.

By: Charlotte Jones and Emily Achurch

Where the lions roar and the turtles go, we’re off to the seal show!

Year 5 was waiting at the entrance to the show. Everyone was talking and laughing. “I think I’ll try to get in one more photo” I said to Isabella and Mikayla. I got a photo of the entrance just as my iPod ran out of battery. We were first in line.

Finally the door opened, we raced to the front row. “Yes! We made it!” Mikayla gasped as we sat in our seats. We put our things behind us because they could get wet. The show started. A baby seal came through a door and started doing tricks like jumping off platforms, catching fish and shark impersonations. Next an enormous, chubby

BROUGHTONNewsletter- 5

seal came out, he was the biggest seal at the zoo. He did the same tricks as the baby as well as leaning over the glass wall. The audience oohed and aahed. Then an average sized seal waddled out and jumped off platforms, caught fish and then jumped up and touched a hanging toy with his nose and splashed down into the pool. We got SOAKED! I was wet all over, so were Mikayla and Isabella.

AFTER SCHOOL SUPERVISION

Parents, once you have collected your child from their teacher, it is important for their safety and the safety of others that they are not playing ball games on the paths around the school. We have 3 staff members on duty in the Junior School each afternoon and their focus must be on road crossing and on the Kiss and Drop area. Thanks for your understanding in this matter.

IPSSO SPORT

This week our IPSSO teams played against Macarthur and there were some very good results. Particular mention needs to be made of our Junior Basketball team who although just falling short of victory put in an excellent effort and have shown an outstanding level of progress this Term.

Next week we'll be travelling to St. Peter's for the next round of competition. Basketball will be played at St. Peter's School, the Cricket at Hurley Park and the Girl's Soccer and Mixed Oz-tag teams will be playing at Campbelltown Showground No. 2.

The Juniors will be looking to start at 12.05pm and the Seniors at 1.15pm. We'd love to see you there cheering us on as we work towards the end of the season!

Good luck to all of our teams!

Mr McLeod - Junior School Sport Co-ordinator

CHAPLAIN’S CHAT

TALK ABOUT GALAPAGOS ISLANDS

On Monday, 29 October, Year 2 and Kinder Red had a special visitor in class. Mr McRae (Mrs Allard’s father) was talking to our students about his trip to the Galapagos Islands in Ecuador. Year 2 students were learning, in Spanish, about the unique animals of South America and Mr McRae presented that world from another perspective by showing his photos taken in the Galapagos Islands and sharing his experience. The students were stunned that the island was formed on melted lava and saw amazing pictures of their flora and wildlife. Mr McRae is an artist and showed us how to draw humming birds and a toucan. I was astonished with the quality of pictures the students created, especially KR students. There are little artists in this class! I was fascinated with Mr McRae’s personal travel diary consisting of drawings instead of notes. One particular sketch drew my attention. It was a shrine on a Polish base in Antarctica where the scientists prayed (there are no churches there!). It was made out of the whale’s bones which were put in a big rock. Thank you, Mrs Allard for facilitating us to invite your father to our school. Students have benefited much from his visit and some were so inspired that they kept drawing the birds at home. ¡Gracias señora Allard and señor McRae! Hopefully you can visit us next year for the other grades and talk about God’s wonderful creation. (Above) Mr McRae drawing in Antarctica

FRUIT OF THE SPIRIT FOCUS

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law. Galatians 5:22-23

Kindergarten students are learning about the Fruits of the Spirit this term and are looking at practical ways that they can display these characteristics to those around them.

Each Tuesday all of Kindergarten join together to have lunch and sing songs about the Fruits of the Spirit and celebrate 3 students who have displayed a specific Fruit of the Spirit during the previous week.

It is wonderful to see and hear the way Kindergarten students are maturing and learning about ways in which they can be a blessing to others in the College.

I can show love by giving a present to someone. (Rebecca, KY)

I can show joy by giving someone a smile. (Rowan, KY)

I can show peace by not arguing. (Tom, KY)

I can show patience by waiting my turn. (Brodie, KB)

I can show kindness by sharing toys and pencils with friends. (Austin, KB)

I can show goodness by listening to the teacher while I’m sitting on the mat. (Lily, KB)

I can show faithfulness by loving my friends. (Layla, KR)

I can show gentleness by helping people when they fall down. (Ava, KR)

I can show self-control by playing gently with other people. (Morgan, KR)

I am looking forward to continuing being involved as a Prefect next year, and I hope that if you have any questions about anything, you won’t be afraid to just come up and ask me.

WRITER OF THE WEEK

Congratulations to this week’s winner of the ‘Writer of the Week. This entry is from Georgina Garrett of Year 8, who offers us some of her Fantasy genre writing.

“The mass was moist under her feet. Spongy like a cushion. The chitter chatter of the others became a distant and muted world as Anka walked to her rock.

Her village lay on a shelf beneath a waterfall and Anka the water fairy felt a special affinity with it. Every day a steady stream of crystal clear water cascaded down the face of the waterfall and everyday Anka would sit on her rock and watch the shimmering sound and light show.”
