GOALS

1. Review the requirements for the community summaries.

2. Students will feel confident to write their community summaries

3. Effectively answer any questions students may have regarding this assignment.

OVERALL

-5-10 pages

-Should resemble a journal article

-2 Qualitative Papers:

-CV1: 7 Community Tools

-CV3: Focus Group & Interviewing

-1 Quantitative Paper

-CV2: Questionnaire (can have qualitative components)

-I sent out an example of a qualitative and quantitative journal article

-Submit to me and Ajaan Toon

-These papers will help to prepare you for the writing in the last course.

OVERALL RUBRIC

-Title and Abstract (Summary) 5%

-Introduction 5%

-Review of the Instrument 10%

-Methods 25%

-Results 15%

-Discussion 15%

-Conclusion 15%

-APA Format, Spelling, Grammar 10%

TITLE AND ABSTRACT = 5%- Title

- Includes: Who? Where? When? Study Subject?

- Abstract

- Summary of every part of the paper

- 250 words maximum

INTRODUCTION = 5%

• Background/Rationale• Any information you have about the community• Supported by references

• The 7 Community Tools article• Any info about the importance of the tool• Any references related to your findings

• Objectives and Goals• Goals: aim of the work in broad terms• Objectives: more specific, but relate to the research question

• Can develop objectives and goals into a research hypothesis

LITERATURE REVIEW OF THE RESEARCH INSTRUMENT = 10%

• This is the literature review portion!• Review what the research instrument is that you used• Represent the theoretical core of the study

• Why is it important? • What is used for?

• If available, review what other researcher have done on this topic (even in other communities)

• Provide Background to serve as motivation for objections and hypotheses that guide your research

METHODS = 25%• Sample info/Sample of Population

• Size• Type of sampling (random, snowball, convenience, etc.)• Character of sample population• Inclusion and exclusion criteria

• Data collection• Study Design/Planning Process (How did you adapt the tool for your goals)• Study type• How did you pilot (practice) your research instruments

• Can mention preparation in workshop• Also, how you prepped your translators

• Study Design/Planning Proccess• Study type• Tools for data collection• How did you pilot (practice) your research instruments

• Can mention workshop• Also, how you prepped your translators

• Measurement• Tools for data collection

• Outcome measurement (don’t worry about this part!)• Statistical methods/Data analysis (more on this in the next few slides)

• Study Variables• How to handle/interpret data

• Ethics

QUALITATIVE DATA ANALYSIS

•• A focus on meanings rather than on quantifiable phenomena

1. Documentation of the data and the process of data collection

2. Organization/categorization of the data into concepts

-How did you decide what to include

-How did you draft our figures

RESULTS = 15%• What did you find?• Can include charts and figures• Describe you charts and figures• How many people did you interview in the end? Who were

they?• If there are discrepancies, how many people said one things-

how many said the other, etc.

DISCUSSION = 15%• Strengths & Limitations or your research

• (Or can put this in the conclusion)

• What is the meaning/implications of the the info you found• This is where you go beyond just stating the facts you found

and discuss the meaning behind it• What possible conclusions can you draw

CONCLUSION = 15%• Summarize your primary findings• Recommendations for future research• Recommendations for future interventions• Future direction (for research, interventions, the community itself)

APA FORMAT, SPELLING, GRAMMAR = 10%
