YAC Leader Dylan travels to Atlanta, GA for Community Anti-Drug Coalitions of America (CADCA)’s Mid-Year Training: “I recently had the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to travel to the beautiful city of Atlanta, Georgia to learn more about topics of drug and alcohol prevention to bring back to the Youth Advisory Council and more broadly, the community. At this four-day institute, I learned about things like community assessments, the Strategic Prevention Framework (SPF), risk factors, local conditions, and most importantly, how adults and youth can work together to achieve a common goal. I am hoping to speak at a coalition meeting in the coming months to talk more about who I met, what I did, and to express my gratitude for sending me to this life-changing event!”

Schools: Save-the-Date for IYS Registration! Registration for the 2018 Illinois Youth Survey (IYS) will open on August 31, 2017! CPYD’s goal is for 100% of all schools serving 8th, 10th, and 12th graders in our service area (Schaumburg, Hoffman Estates, Palatine, Elk Grove Village, and Hanover Park) to participate in the 2018 IYS. The IYS is a free, anonymous, and optional survey
intended to gather valuable information about the use of gateway substances and other drugs, violence, bullying, depression, and other health and social indicators. The CPYD Coalition depends on the data provided by the IYS results for grant funding, program improvement, and strategic planning.
School administrators → IYS results provide information about what students are doing and thinking that can be used to improve our schools and teens’ academic performance. Community members → IYS results are used to secure new funding, as well as to justify existing resources which aids in effectively addressing local issues and problems. Teens → The IYS is an effective way of making sure that your voice is heard by parents, educators, and policy-makers. Take an active role in advocating for our schools to administer the IYS this school year! It all starts with a phone call: call your schools and let them know why the IYS and substance abuse prevention is important to you, your family, and our community. CONGRATULATIONS TO OUR YOUTH ADVISORY COUNCIL
(YAC) MEMBERS!
“Being a member of YAC has been incredibly rewarding! Not only have I been able to meet some great people and network with many members of the community, I've gotten to help put together many projects that can help people for years to come. I will be attending Valparaiso University studying Criminology and Psychology in the fall, and I know this experience will help me in the future!” - Matt: 2 years, YAC member

KEEPING UP WITH REPRODUCTIVE HEALTH
This summer, the Teen Pregnancy Prevention (TPP) team has been preparing for the exciting plans to come this school year! After a successful implementation of Making a Difference! at
Centro de Información this past Spring, we will be returning to implement the same program beginning in September 2017. The Making a Difference! program will also be returning to Spring Wood Middle School in January 2018. We are also excited to announce that school district’s U-46 alternative high school, DREAM Academy, will begin implementing the Making Proud Choices! program beginning in November 2017.
Additionally, the TPP team has been working on a sustainability plan to ensure programming continues, so young people in the community can continue to receive this evidence-based education in schools and community settings.
