PROJECTS & PROGRAM DEVELOPMENT 2014 Evidence Based Practice Training for Community Counseling Program Counselors, Chair Chaired expert task force to develop 5-day workshop on basic cognitive behavioral therapy skills and

trauma-focused therapy, and delivered training to 200 U.S. Marine Corps mental health professionals at three installations.

2013-2015 Recognizing and Responding to Suicide Risk (RRSR)-USSOCOM, Trainer

Revised RRSR curriculum for U.S. Special Operations Command and delivered 3 workshops for primary care medical providers working with Special Forces personnel to teach basic skills related to assessing and intervening with suicidal SF personnel.

2013 Veterans on Campus: Students and RAs, Curriculum Consultant Veterans on Campus: Students and RAs is an online role-playing training simulation that prepares

student veterans to recognize when another student veteran may be experiencing underlying emotional distress or problems in life, including academic struggles and suicide risk, and how to talk with fellow veterans in a way that engages them and encourages them to seek out supportive services and mental health treatment.

2013 Virtual PTSD Clinical Assistant (VCPA), Consultant To provide better healthcare to PTSD patients, there is a strong need to develop a powerful PTSD

CDSS based on evidence-based treatment strategies, acting as an anytime virtual assistant for PTSD professionals, Primary Care Physicians (PCP), and residents. To address this critical need, Intelligent Automation, Inc., proposes to develop an innovative Virtual PTSD Clinical Assistant with Cloud Computing and Mobile Interface: VPCA. The key innovation of VPCA is the utilization of Hadoop Ecosystem with scalable data storage and processing capability to enable the evidence based clinical decision support empowered by Watson-like predictive analytics across different domains for PTSD patients.

2012 At-Risk in Primary Care, Curriculum Consultant At-Risk in Primary Care is an online role-playing training simulation that prepares primary care

providers to recognize when a patient’s physical ailments may be masking underlying trauma-related mental health disorders, including PTSD and depression and how to build a treatment plan that

engages the patient and integrates mental health so that the causes of the symptoms are addressed and treated. View demo at http://www.kognito.com/pcp/demo

2012 Man Therapy, Consultant The Man Therapy website (www.mantherapy.org) was developed to specifically target men experiencing

mental health distress, a subgroup of the population with a very high suicide rate and very low likelihood of accessing mental health treatment. The website takes a nontraditional approach to mental health outreach and suicide prevention by tapping into traditional male gender norms.

2009 – 2012 Defender’s Edge Program, Program Creator & Instructor

The Defender‘s Edge (DEFED) Program is a mental health promotion program created while I was deployed to Iraq. This program differs from traditional mental health approaches in that it adopted a strengths-based philosophy intended to circumvent mental health stigma and prevent the onset of psychological and behavioral problems. The program has continued in the form of predeployment trainings for Air Force Security Forces personnel conducting combat missions. Since program creation in 2009, approximately 800 Airmen have participated in training at 5 different training sites.

2010-2011 U.S. Marine Corps Suicide Prevention Program, Task Force Chair

Chaired a task force of 6 suicide prevention experts to create a new suicide prevention training program intended for implementation across the entire U.S. Marine Corps. The resulting product included 4 separate manuals and 8 educational modules, and in-person delivery of beta testing to a group of 23 active duty Marines.

2010-2011 U.S. Air Force Airman Resiliency Toolkit, Curriculum Developer

Developed a mental health promotion program for the U.S. Air Force designed to teach basic skills for improving sleep, physical fitness, nutrition, personal meaning, distress tolerance, and problem solving. The ultimate goal of the program is to reduce the incidence of psychological morbidity across the entire Air Force population, and is intended to be the primary method for improving mental health for all active duty Airmen. Resulting products included a student manual, an instructor manual, and 5 educational modules.

2008 Recognizing and Responding to Suicide Risk in Primary Care (RRSR-PC), Task Force Chair

Chaired a task force of 3 suicide experts and 3 primary care providers to create a 90-minute training curriculum for primary care medical providers to teach basic skills related to assessing and intervening with suicidal patients.
