DEAR PARENTS/CARERS: Helping Children Respond to World Events The shooting of innocent people in Christchurch last week has shaken many and I extend a message of care and support to the Muslim members of our community. It is almost impossible to completely protect our children from the news of these types of situations so I have included a really helpful article for you to give some thought to. Click here Safety in Schools We take the safety of students very seriously and there is evidence in our vision, emergency procedures, risk management and Positive Behaviour Support Policy to uphold this. The Director General has sent a directive early this year that tells Principals to do what needs to be done to manage students who intentionally hurt others or start or film fights. After an investigation suspension should be considered. Although we have very few incidents, it is important that we work together as a community to ensure high levels of respect and care for each other and teach our children that violence is never a solution to resolving conflict. It is also vital that you take a strong role in managing childrens use of social media every minute of every day. Business Plan We have sent you a copy of the strategic plan for the next three years. Please have a look at the direction the School Board has set for the next three years. I am happy to answer any questions you may have about it. School Board Opportunity To ensure a strong representation of parents, carers and community members we are seeking one or two new members with a few hours to spare on a Wednesday twice a term. It would be great to have a community person (retired or not) who has links to business or services who could provide a different perspective. Parents & Citizens Association Congratulations to Rebecca Vause and her band of dedicated helpers for a great AGM and all the wonderful support offered to the students of this school through their fundraising efforts. ROOM 12 ASSEMBLY

SCHOOL NEWS:

Last week we were treated to a wonderful presentation of many of the messages around the right way to be at Craigie Heights Primary School. Mrs Bardsley wrote a dramatic piece to demonstrate effective, safe ways to deal with all the emotions that you might experience in your life. The students did a really great job with their acting and speaking parts. She also wrote another of her amazing songs which the students sang with great enthusiasm.

Room 12’s Assembly Song—Mad

When you’re feeling mad;

When you’re seeing red,

Like pins and needles in your head;

When you feel a shock,

Or a sudden jolt,

Like you’ve been hit by a lightning bolt;

And you wanna scream,

Wanna stamp and shout,

Wanna rage and roar,

Throw your weight about;

Like you’re gonna burst,

Like your head will POP;

Then you’ve gotta STOP!

Breath in deeply

Keep your feet upon the ground.

When you control your passion,

There’s an answer to be found.

It’s the best solution

That there is for you and me;

Try it out and you will see:

It will set you free.

Music = Happiness

I had the pleasure of visiting the Music

Room last week. It was an absolute joy

to watch the Year 5/6 students so

engaged and on task. Well done to Mrs

Massey for making music memorable at

Craigie Heights.

Kindy students are achievers!

Last week I also popped into Room 16. I was

so impressed at how focussed our Kindy kids

were while learning new skills. Good job!!

We play with all

equipment in a safe

manner.

TALK 4 WRITING For the last 2 years we have been implementing Talk4Writing process. It’s a very contemporary model for teaching writing that incorporates what research says works most effectively, such as explicit instruction, modelling, giving rich feedback and students self-assessing. There are 3 stages to the process Imitation – students learn a model text through making a story map and learning it orally first, along

with actions. This helps students to learn patterns – patterns such as text structure, sentence structure and language features.

Innovate – students adapt this model text by substituting, altering and adding.

Invent – students draw on what they have learnt about the text, language and ideas to create their piece of writing.

It’s been fabulous to see students being very engaged and motivated. Teachers will often start with a ‘Hook’ to engage students with the model text. Currently the Year 1s are learning the model text of The Tortoise and the Hare. Mrs Page started the unit of work with students racing cars driven by a tortoise and by a hare. The students really enjoyed this.

AUSTRALIAN SCHOOL GIRLS CHOIR

Congratulations to Chloe one of our Year Two students who is a member of the Australian School Girls Choir. Chloe was selected for the choir last February and this year has won a very special position in the leading ten singers. This is an outstanding achievement. Chloe has performed at the Perth Concert Hall in the Greatest Showman and has also performed as Shirley Temple. We are very proud of Chloe and wish her all the best for her singing adventures!

Parent parking is available in the car park in front of the Early Childhood Area. This area is not a ‘Kiss and Drop’ area. Provision has been made for two disabled parking bays in this car park. Please do not park in these bays as we have families requiring these spaces. Never use the staff car park. "Kiss and Drop" - If you wish to use the ‘Kiss and Drop’ area, there is a zone specifically for this purpose on Spinaway Street. Please do not park or leave your vehicle in this area. Additional parent parking is kindly offered at the Craigie Baptist Church car park beside the school, which is a short walk to the school. We are so lucky to have this additional parking so please respect everything on their site. The school oval will also be opened for parking for assemblies and school events. Parking on the verges around the school is extremely dangerous and puts our students at risk. Unfortunately a number of parents continue to park on our neighbours verges or drive-ways and this has been reported to the Joondalup Council for their action.

EXPLORING THE GALAXY

Humans are driven to explore the unknown, discover new worlds and push boundaries. More than fifty years of human activity in space has sparked new scientific and technological benefits that improves the quality of life on Earth and leads to a better understanding of our universe and the solar system in which we live.

Curiosity and exploration are vital to the human spirit, and this year Joondalup Festival invites you to Explore the Galaxy, as we seek to inspire young and old.
