Art students to fashion the trashTre vor Cr awley

They say one man’s trash is another man’s treasure.

However, in spite of the name, it’s a little un-kind to refer to the fash-ionable creations of high school students as trash.

The fifth annual Trashion Fashion Show is set for Thursday, April 23 at the Tama-rack Centre, with the first creations hitting the runway at 7:30 p.m.

Don’t be fooled by the word Trashion however, as the stu-

dents are working with recyclable material to make a statement in more than just the fash-ionable sense.

“We think of them more as wearable sculpture than we do as much as outfits,” said Cheryl Wilkinson, who teaches Art Foundation at Mount Baker Sec-ondary School. “We re-ally emphasize not just the design and paying attention to the human body, but in creating an interesting piece of art, too.

“Some students de-cide to make artistic statements as well. There’s a statement in itself in using what we have in the environ-ment; you don’t have to buy new.

“They sometimes feel passionate about something else and they’ll communicate that through their wares as well.”

The show, which is billed as performance art, is roughly 30 min-utes long with students largely modelling their own work. Carter Gulseth, who has MC’d the past three years, will reprise his role for the

last time before he graduates.

The students will be wearing their own piec-es, but other students from middle or elemen-tary schools have also participated in the past, Wilkinson added.

“The students large-ly model their own work—we really en-courage that,” said Wilkinson. “It’s more interesting, we don’t

need to look like mod-els.

“We are artists and want to look like art-ists.”

Not to give away the surprise of the student’s work, but some of the materials used in the fashions include gro-cery bags and VHS tape. One student, who made a children’s dress out of used dryer sheets, ex-panded her project to

create a bridal dress.Wilkinson adds that

the students take pride in their work.

“They have come to expect it and I would say look forward to it,” she said. “…Some spend the duration of the year that are recyclable or not used any longer in their life and they’ll col-lect it in the means that it would make an inter-esting sculpted outfit.”

Tre vor Cr awleyTetanus and Diph-

theria vaccinations will be available at a pair of upcoming clinics, as part of Immunization Week at the end of April.

On Wednesday, April 29, there will be an im-munization clinic at Mc-Donalds, running from 9-11 a.m., while Canadi-an Tire will host the next clinic on Thursday, April 30, from 12-2:30 p.m.

Diane Cameron, a public health nurse, says the vaccines are two of the most basic immunizations that have been used for many years.

“Tetanus is one of those things—and Diphtheria—that need to be boosted every 10 years for us to have our best protection,” Camer-on said. “Even though we don’t see a lot of dis-ease with those, it doesn’t mean those germs go away.”

Cameron says the

tetanus bacteria lives in the soil, and that any time there is a dirty inju-ry, such as a scrape or cut, there is potential for the bacteria to get into the body and cause dis-ease.

Diphtheria isn’t common, especially in Canada, but outbreaks can be mitigated by vac-cination programs.

“They’re always there, they’re not eradi-cated like small pox has been eradicated; they’re always there,” Cameron said. “The higher level of what they call herd immunity keeps the general population healthy.”

Immunizations are available at the Public Health Unit, travel clinic and pharmacies, but the two clinics at McDon-alds and Canadian Tire are also part of raising public awareness.

“We’re just trying to make ourselves a little more visible out in the

community so that peo-ple are more familiar with the need to get that booster as an adult,” Cameron added.

While people like to think that vaccination records are kept, that sometimes isn’t the case. Cameron urges people to be aware of their vaccination record, and notes that there is a free app for smart-phones available for download at www.im-munizebc.ca that will keep track of your vacci-nations.

“The basic thing with vaccines is they’re safe and they save lives. They’re a very tried and true way to protect fam-ily and communities,” Cameron said.

“You start off by pro-tecting yourself, but by protecting yourself, you protect your community and everybody around you—that’s what they mean when they talk about herd immunity.”

The upcoming teas-ers this summer are meant to help raise in-terest in the 2016 air-show. The vintage World War II bombers are operated by the Commemorative Air Force, while the Canadi-an Forces operate the CF 18 and the Buffalo, as well as the Snowbirds. The August flyover will also include up to eight civilian aeronautical performers that will offer a sample of their performances.

Among the civilian performers that will be participating in the teas-er are several perform-ers from the Discovery Channel television se-ries “Airshow”. That in-cludes series star “Super Dave” Mathieson.

Additionally, the ex-ecutive producer of Air-show, Mark Miller, a for-mer resident of Cran-brook, will be in atten-dance this August to film the flyover as part of the television series.

As a fund raiser for the new local airshow society, WestJet has gra-ciously donated a return ticket for two to any scheduled WestJet des-tination in Canada. The society will hold a raffle for tickets this summer with the proceeds going

into the development of the airshow.

Back in April 2014, the City of Cranbrook was contacted by Gar-ton, a Calgary-based airline contractor with a passion for airshows. He wanted to establish a new not-for-profit soci-ety for producing the Canadian Rockies Inter-national Airshow. The city noted that Garton is well connected in the airshow sector with ex-tensive direct involve-ment in the production of airshows.

Garton has family ties to the Cranbrook area and is familiar with the Canadian Rockies International Airport (CRIA) as an airshow venue. City staff said that from the initial con-tact made to the city, the Tristan Chernove, Air-port Managing Director and Kevin Weaver, Eco-nomic Development Of-ficer for the city, have been working with Gar-ton to advance the con-cept.

In October 2015, an independent non-prof-

it-society was estab-lished for the airshow society.

The society is plan-ning for the August 5 and 6, 2016 dates for the airshow.

It will feature civilian and military performers from across Canada and the U.S.

The city is estimating the two day event will attract over 10,000 at-tendees.

The city noted that significant planning still has to be undertaken by the society.

Plans are off the ground for a 2016 airshow, with a special teaser this sum-mer that will include flyovers of two vintage WWII planes — a twin-engine B25 “Mitchell bomber, which visited Cranbrook last summer, and a B17 “Flying Fortress” bomber (pictured above).

FOR THE TOWNSMAN

Volunteers have begun work to restore the historic brick building behind city hall once known as the Electrical and Waterworks Building constructed in 1936. The ornate, old structure was slated for dem-olition, but volunteers associated with the Cranbrook Heritage Association raised funds to restore and stabilize the building for future use. Karl Schmideder Jr., a local brick and masonry contractor, says he’ll probably be working on the building for at least month along with the volunteers, but adds it’s a labour of love. “If these walls could talk, I’m sure they would have many stories to tell.”

PAGE 4 FRIDAY, APRIL 17, 2015

Y ou may have heard the news a few weeks ago that Conservative MP James Lunney (Nanaimo-Alberni)

left the Conservative caucus to sit as an in-dependent. His reason was that there is a deliberate attempt by the Tory caucus to “suppress a Christian worldview” at the se-nior levels of politics. He noted that “mili-tant atheists” have attacked Christian politi-cians, and are funding a campaign to “dis-credit a Christian world view in Canada.”

His particular beef has to do with the issue of evolution and cre-ationism. Lunney is one of those who claim that “evo-lution is only a theory and not a fact,” claiming that the biblical view of cre-ation is incompatible with evolutionary science.

A couple of days later, I stumbled on an article about NOMA — “nonoverlapping magisteria” — a term coined by the fa-mous evolutionary biologist, Stephen Jay Gould.

It’s a 64–dollar word for what is essen-tially a very simple concept. The word “magister” is the Latin word for “teacher.” Roman Catholics will be familiar with the “magisterium”, which is the teaching au-thority of the church. “Magisteria” is the plural form of that, referring to two or more different teaching authorities.

The concept of NOMA simply means then that since science and religion are separate domains of knowledge, each of them operates by different rules of inqui-ry. These “magisteria” do not “overlap”, and so the rules of one field of enquiry cannot determine the findings in the other.

To put it very simply, religion can’t tell science what to do and vice–versa.

Gould puts it this way: “The net of sci-ence covers the empirical universe: what is it made of (fact) and why does it work this way (theory). The net of religion ex-tends over questions of moral meaning

and value. These two magisteria do not overlap, nor do they encompass all inqui-ry (consider, for starters, the magisterium of art and the meaning of beauty). To cite the arch clichés, we get the age of rocks, and religion retains the rock of ages; we study how the heavens go, and they deter-mine how to go to heaven.”

There are practical implications for both science and faith.

For science, the various branches of modern science have made tremendous

advances in our understand-ing of cosmic, geological, and biological evolution. We know a lot. Any good scientist will agree that we don’t know ev-erything, but we do know a lot.

But when scientists con-clude from their work that a

higher power does not exist, or that this or that religious tradition is not “true,” they have overstepped their bounds, because spiritual reality is not subject to the rules of scientific inquiry.

NOMA tells us that we can’t reject faith on the basis of the lack of scientific corrob-oration for God. People are free to reject faith, of course, but not on the basis of science. Scientists cannot zero in on the Bible and say that science has “disproven” Genesis. That would display a profound ignorance of the nature of biblical litera-ture, assuming that it can and should be evaluated by the rules of scientific inquiry.

But it goes both ways. Christians mirror these missteps when they dismiss evolu-tion because it is incompatible with “bib-lical teaching.” When they pit the Bible against science, they make the same mis-take of pitting science against the Bible. They assume that the two are alternate means of describing origins (they are) and therefore both are subject to the same rules of evaluation (they aren’t).

Christians have understood, since at least the days of Augustine (354–430 CE), that the Bible simply isn’t designed to ad-

dress scientific matters. To think that it does betrays an unfortunate ignorance about the nature of the Bible.

Augustine wrote, “It is a disgraceful and dangerous thing for an infidel to hear a Christian … talking nonsense on these [cosmological] topics, and we should take all means to prevent such an embarrass-ing situation, in which people show up vast ignorance in a Christian and laugh it to scorn. (In “The Literal Meaning of Gen-esis.”)

That “disgraceful” treatment of Genesis is even less excusable today than in Au-gustine’s day. The Bible and science have grown even further apart.

We don’t know everything, but we cer-tainly know a lot more both about how the universe works, and how ancient stories of origins work. Many such ancient stories exist, and we don’t read any of them (out-side the Bible) as historical records.

To think that the Bible is somehow im-mune from its ancient cultural influence is a blind assertion that carries no weight at all. Gould notes correctly that “Creation-ism is a homegrown phenomenon of American sociocultural history—a splin-ter movement (unfortunately rather more of a beam these days) of Protestant funda-mentalists who believe that every word of the Bible must be literally true.” Until just over 100 years ago, no Christian ever read the Bible that way. Creationism has nei-ther any scientific basis, nor any basis in faith.

Pope John Paul 2 noted in his 1996 statement that “Truth Cannot Contradict Truth.” He writes that the last 50 years have seen such a remarkable convergence among scientists about the truth of evolu-tionary science that we can “celebrate na-ture’s factuality and look forward to inter-esting discussions of the theological im-plications of the veracity of evolution.”

sembled at the Masonic Temple at 4 p.m. on Sun-

day, April 29, 1917. Dressed in full regalia and led by the Knights Templar they marched in solemn array from their meeting hall (the present day Studio on 11th Avenue) along Baker Street to 9th Avenue and onward to the former Presbyte-rian Church on the southeast corner of 9th Avenue and 1st Street.

There, they joined a large crowd gathered to honour the memory of Lieutenant Thomas Henry “Harry” Banfield, late of the 103rd Battalion of the Ca-nadian Expeditionary Force, who died in action in France three weeks previously.

Harry Banfield, age 41, was well-known in Cranbrook. A partner in the contracting firm of Baker and Banfield, he not only contributed to the con-struction of numerous houses of Cranbrook following his ar-rival in the city in 1907, but was also a former alderman and a property owner of note.

He was older than many of the local WWI boys but by the time he enlisted in January, 1916, the army was willing to overlook age in order to fill their ever-decreasing numbers, especially as Harry had done well on his officer training course in the months prior to his enlistment.

Reverend W. H. Bridge: gave the sermon that day say-ing, in part “We have met to do honor to the memory of a fallen brother — one of a great host, one who held a place in our hearts and affections. We can-not but think of him first as a man, a son, a citizen, some-body’s boy — and for the sake of these things, to uphold the honor of these things, a soldier.”

He was indeed somebody’s

Three Cranbrook soldiers lay buried in three cemeteries in France following their deaths during the battle of Vimy Ridge, April 9 – 12, 1917. The grounds are still carefully maintained almost a century later – photo montage Cameron courtesy the Commonwealth War Graves Commission.

boy, the son of Thomas and Harriet Banfield of Somerset, England. One of five brothers and sisters, unmarried, five feet seven inches tall and weighing 134 pounds, Harry Banfield sailed from Halifax harbour on July 23, 1916, arriving in Liver-pool, England, on the 31st. He joined his unit in France on March 31, 1917, and died nine days later on Vimy Ridge.

A letter of May 31, from Cap-tain J.J. Martin, describes both his death and that of his good friend and former Cranbrook resident Major Bert Black as occurring while Lt. Banfield was moving his men back from a forward position raked by German machine gun fire. He was hit while covering the re-treat.

A lad named Ashcroft from Vernon, B.C., attempted to dress hit wounds but it was too late. Ashcroft was fatally struck by a sniper soon afterwards. Major Black, wounded three times, died on April 12. Captain Martin stated “Black and Ban-field are gone. They died fight-ing for home and liberty.”

Lt. Banfield and Major Black were just two of the Cran-brook men who died during the battle for Vimy Ridge. It was a battle that saw, for the first time, the combined Canadian forces attack as one. It was no-table victory, a victory said to

have given birth to the unifica-tion of Canada as a country.

The source of great national pride undoubtedly, the birth of a unified country perhaps, but the wounding, maiming and death of over 10,000 Canadian soldiers. It was, in the grand scheme of things, just one of many battles in the big Allied push in that spring of 1917. The men who fought it had little idea of its import to their na-tion. They fought and died in a muddy, bloody morass of me-tallic thunder and man-made lightning. They, among the 3,598 Canadians killed during the battle, never knew the con-tribution they made. They died there, on Vimy Ridge and lay now among their slain com-rades on the gentle, grassy fields that were once the very picture of Armageddon itself.

Among the dead were other Cranbrook boys. For most their memorial services were not as grand as that of Lt. Banfield. By 1917, death had become commonplace. There are 166 names on the Cran-brook cenotaph; the city suf-fered, on average, one death every nine-and-a-half days over the course of the four years of the war. Cranbrook was a much smaller communi-ty then and by 1917, local ser-vices for the dead were a tragi-cally common fact of life.

Among the others, Private Harold Cadwallader, age 23, and his younger brother Pri-vate Lawson Cadwallader, age 21, died within one day of each other. The sons of Welsh con-tractor Thomas Cadwallader and his wife Sarah, Harold worked for local dry goods merchant I. R. Manning before his enlistment in late 1915, while Lawson was a driver for the Cranbrook Trading Co. be-fore he joined up in June 1916.

In a letter to the parents, the regiment’s chaplain wrote that Lawson was killed instanta-neously by a shell and that he died without suffering. It was a standard refrain in communi-cations of the sort, perhaps it was the truth.

The Cadwalladers received the letter almost a month after his death. News was slow to travel from the battlefield to the hometown. Of his brother Har-old there appears no indication of how he died save that he was killed in action. The Cadwal-lader family moved away short-ly thereafter.

Lt. Harry Banfield, Privates Lawson Cadwallader and Pri-vate Harold Cadwallader are buried in separate cemeteries. They died at Vimy Ridge; they are buried in France, they live in the shadows of our town.

Let the search beginKootenay Ice mutually part with head coach Ryan McGill

Taylor rocc aSports Editor

When the puck drops on the 2015-16 WHL season, there will be a fresh face behind the bench for the Kootenay Ice.

After three seasons calling the shots, head coach Ryan McGill is on the way out after he and the team mutually agreed to part ways upon the expiration of his con-tract June 30, 2015.

“Every coach has a shelf life,” said Jeff Chynoweth, Kootenay Ice president and gener-al manager, Thursday morning. “I just look at the way our team is and the way we’re turning over for next year. We’re going to be one of the youngest teams in the league and I just think we need a new voice.”

The search for a new head coach begins and with 11 total 1995-born players on the roster, there stands to be signif-icant turnover and a youthful infusion in the player-personnel de-partment, which factors into the process.

“There are always lots of candidates. There are coaches at every level of hockey,” Chynoweth said. “We’ve just got to make sure we get the right one. That’s a tough puzzle to put together. For us, we defi-nitely have some ideas in mind of what we’re looking for and as the process goes along, we’ll take our time and see if we can get the right fit for our hockey club.

“Teaching is always important, especially when you’re dealing with today’s young play-ers…Teaching and com-munication are always very important, whoever you hire in any position in your organization, not

just the head coach.”Chynoweth said re-

sumes and applications have already begun flowing in for the soon-to-be vacated head coaching position, but he is in no rush to find the sixth coach in fran-chise history.

“We’ll sit down when the time is right and start the process,” Chynoweth said. “But we’re in no rush to make a decision.

“We don’t put a time-frame on it.”

McGill was the sec-ond coach in franchise history, first joining the club during its final days in Edmonton, replacing Dave Siciliano midway through the 1997-98 campaign. The 46-year-old native of Sherwood Park, Alta., remained with the Ice through the 2001-02 season, guiding the franchise to a pair of WHL titles (2000 and 2002) as well as a Me-morial Cup champion-ship (2002).

McGill departed fol-lowing the 2002 season, moving into head coach-ing roles at the American Hockey League level (Hartford Wolf Pack, 2002-03 through 2004-05; Omaha Ak-Sar-Ben Knights/ Quad City Flames, 2005-06 through 2008-09) before joining the Calgary Flames as an assistant coach (2009-10 through 2010-11).

During his absence, Cory Clouston (five sea-sons), Mark Holick (three seasons) and Kris Knoblauch (two sea-sons) found their way in and out of Cranbrook.

McGill returned for his second stint at the onset of the 2012-13 campaign.

The 2014-15 WHL season marked the third in his second tour of duty with the club. The Ice wrapped the season

37-31-1-3, good enough for fourth place in the Central Division before falling to the Calgary Hitmen in a sev-en-game, first-round playoff defeat.

In eight total seasons behind the bench, Mc-Gill registered a career regular-season record of 280-222-53.

On top of his two league titles and Memo-

rial Cup championship, McGill was also named WHL Coach of the Year following the 2012-13 campaign, leading into his role as an assistant coach for Team Canada at the 2014 IIHF World Junior Hockey Champi-onship.

While McGill’s tenure in Cranbrook has come to a close for the second time, three other mem-

bers of Chynoweth’s hockey-operations staff also face expiring con-tracts.

Assistant coach Jay Henderson, athletic therapist Cory Cameron and director of scouting Garnet Kazuik all see their contracts expire June 30 as well.

Chynoweth’s hope is to retain all three mov-ing forward.

RB Peterson reinstated by NFLJon Kr awczynsKi

Associated Press

MINNEAPOLIS - The NFL has reinstated Minne-sota Vikings RB Adrian Peterson, clearing the way for him to return after missing most of last season while facing child abuse charges in Texas.

The league announced its decision on Thursday. Commissioner Roger Goodell sent Peterson a letter advising him of his reinstatement. Goodell wrote that Peterson will have to fulfil all the obligations of his plea deal with authorities after he reached a plea deal to reduce a felony charge to a misdemeanour.

Ryan McGill (above) will not return to the Kootenay Ice for the 2015-16 season.

“Your Number 1 vinyl waterproof decking solution”www.duradek.com

Dear Annie: Twelve years ago, my son moved his girlfriend into our home. “Lena” lived with us for four years, and we treated her like family. They broke up, and Lena moved out. She then married someone else and now has an adorable 6-year-old daughter. We have remained such good friends with her that my husband walked her down the aisle at her wedding.

My son is now 30 and has never married. Unfortunately, his current girlfriend is demanding that we sever all ties with Lena, and she is causing problems for us with our son. We have tried to reassure them both that the old flame is no threat to their new romance, but it hasn’t helped.

We live in a very small town where everyone knows each other. Is it fair for us to be treated this way? -- Mom

Dear Mom: Of course not, but that doesn’t solve the problem. The new girlfriend is terribly insecure and needs to control everyone around her, includ-ing you. She doesn’t realize how her attitude damages her relationship with you. Your son permits this because he wants to keep seeing her, and as long as he does so, you will need to limit your contact with Lena in order to have a re-lationship with your son. We only hope he doesn’t marry this girl. She sounds like a major headache.

Dear Annie: My husband is a girl watcher. I find it very hurtful that I can’t keep his attention. He is constantly looking around, and when he zeroes in on some young blonde with a great fig-ure, he repeatedly stares at her.

I have confronted him a few times about this habit, and he denies that he is doing it. Am I being irrationally jeal-ous? Do I need to just get over it? Every-thing else at home seems fine. -- Want Him To Look Only at Me

Dear Want: Your husband’s behavior is boorish, but not threatening. Most guys look. The problem is, he is so bla-tant about it that it becomes disrespect-ful to you. If he truly does not realize he is doing this, you need to call his atten-tion to it.

Behavior modification can work. Smile and say calmly, “I see you’re checking out the blonde at that table. She is pretty. But you are a bit obvious when you keep staring.” He may deny it, but because he knows you can tell, he should be more willing to admit that his technique needs work. It is important not to become angry or annoyed. Your goal is to get him to notice his own be-havior enough to control it.

We don’t believe he means to hurt you. As long as he isn’t approaching these women and attempting to get a date, please try to be tolerant until he matures.

Dear Annie: This is for “Stuck in the Midwest,” who wants to convince her husband to move to a warmer climate. She should get on Google Maps and show him the street view of all the plac-es in her “new city.” -- Tried It

ARIES (March 21-April 19) Your efforts will come back in multiples. You carefully will express yourself with a child or loved one, and it will be well-re-ceived. Making plans could force a change to your schedule. Make it your pleasure. Don’t lose your temper so quickly. To-night: A force to be dealt with.TAURUS (April 20-May 20) Remain sure of yourself. You might not like what is happen-ing with a situation. When you let those involved hear your opinions, you should expect a strong reaction, no matter how you say what you are thinking. Making peace could be touch-and-go for a while. Tonight: Vanish.GEMINI (May 21-June 20) You might not have a free mo-ment with so much happening around you. You’ll be delighted by the action, but at the same time you could feel pressured. When an associate notices how tense you are, he or she will try

to alleviate the stress. Tonight: Only where the crowds are.CANCER (June 21-July 22)You might not be up for taking on more responsibility, but you won’t seem to have a choice. You could be wondering what your options are. Know that you can delegate certain tasks to others. A male friend could be challenging. Tonight: Avoid a power play at all costs.LEO (July 23-Aug. 22)Your perspective will change if you detach. You might under-stand a loved one a lot better if you can tune in to your empathy and imagine what it would be like to walk in this person’s shoes. Your positive approach will get warm results. Tonight: Take off ASAP.VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22)One-on-one relating takes you to a new level of understanding. You’ll feel good in the company of a dear friend with whom you can be totally open. Don’t worry about a change in plans and/or another person’s fiery outburst. Tonight: Dinner for two.LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22)

You might have no choice but to defer to others, especially as they seem determined to have control. If you think someone is making a mistake, let this person know without making a scene. As a result, he or she will be more likely to accept the results. Tonight: Say “yes.”SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21)Pace yourself and take a break. One-on-one relating will bring out the affection of an admir-er. Be careful with how you approach this person, as he or she could be more intense than you might realize. Avoid an outburst, if possible. Tonight: Accept someone’s offer.SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21)Your naturally fiery personality might emerge when dealing with a new friend. Passion runs high between you, and one of you is likely to get irritated. De-tach, and a new beginning be-comes possible. Tonight: Avoid taking any risks right now.CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19)You will have to come to terms with a loved one’s choices. You might be questioning this per-

son’s rationale, but understand that you probably can’t change his or her mind. Relax. Just rec-ognize how good you feel with this person around you. Tonight: Head home early.AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18)You might wonder what would be the best way to proceed with a personal matter. With the help of a friend, figure out what the next step is. Pressure builds on the homefront. You’ll discover how irritable a loved one is. Tonight: Favorite place with a favorite person.PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20) You tend to get into the mo-ment, and it is then that your boundaries melt away. Be very careful with your spending. Even if someone proves that what he or she is offering is a sure deal, don’t count on it. Speak your mind. Tonight: Keep to your budget. BORN TODAYFinancier J.P.
