years, Cranbrook is hosting a cele-bration of music and devotion.
Monday, June 22, is the start of the weeklong Canadian Conven-tion of the Country Gospel Music Association (CGMA), taking place at the New Life Foursquare Church on 10th Avenue in Cranbrook.
The CGMA was founded by Billy and Donna Hale, of Branson, Missouri, who were in town a cou-ple of days ahead of the event, and came into the Townsman to talk about the convention, Country Gospel Music, and the days ahead.
Billy Hale is himself a renowned Country Gospel Artist, having re-leased 17 albums, and having had 15 number one songs on the Coun-try Gospel charts. He founded the CGMA in 1996.
“Going back to the beginning
— I spent 30 years as a pastor,” Billy said. “The Lord spoke to me one day — and this is what changed everything. He said I want you to be kind to my Christian country artists. So we started bringing them to town, and looking for ways to be kind to them, and it became obvi-ous was what they really needed was an opportunity to know each other, be kind to each other.
“So we started the Country Gos-pel Music Association in 1996, to bring them together. We initiated an awards program in 1997, which was a big part of luring them to-gether.”
The association is now in its 19th year, and next week’s conven-tion will the association’s 116th. They typically hold six a year typi-cally, sometimes seven, Billy said.

RCMPTwo subjects were taken into
custody following a fight in a downtown parking lot.
On June 17 at 7:30 pm, Cran-brook RCMP was called to a fight in a parking lot in the 600 block of Cranbrook Street North.
Upon arrival police noted a number of individuals who ap-peared to be suffering from inju-ries of varying degrees. The police investigation revealed two groups of individuals were talking when one subject allegedly produced a knife. A physical altercation en-sued in which the suspect with the knife was knocked unconscious.
Two subjects were transported to the Cranbrook hospital with non-life threatening injuries. Two subjects were taken into police custody and a knife was seized at the scene.
Both subjects taken into custo-dy are known to police and had recently moved to the Cranbrook area. Charges being recommend-ed by police include assault with a weapon, possession of a weapon dangerous to the public, posses-sion of a prohibited weapon and obstruction.
One suspect has been released on a Promise to Appear and the second suspect will be taken be-fore a Judicial Justice of the Peace. Police continue to interview wit-nesses and investigate this inci-dent.

Outdoor enthusiasts who enjoy exploring this province’s spectac-
ular backcountry need to do it responsibly and be aware of their legal obligations, or else they may face hefty fines and possible jail time, the Province is reminding
residents.“Under the Forest
and Range Practices Act, it is illegal to cause environmental damage on Crown land,” said a government of British
Columbia press release issued Thursday.
“Irresponsible off-road vehicle use can disturb soil, destroy plants, risk watershed and water source quali-
ty, threaten birds and animals, and introduce invasive plants that may displace native vegeta-tion that wildlife relies on.
Drivers of off-road
vehicles are encouraged to help protect wildlife habitat by staying out of sensitive ecosystems such as wetlands, streams, grasslands, shorelines and alpine
areas.While travelling on a
forest service road, an operator of an all-ter-rain vehicle is required to hold a valid driver’s licence, carry a mini-mum of $200,000 third-party liability in-surance and wear a safety helmet.
Anyone who rides ir-responsibly and causes environmental damage can face stiff penalties.
Individuals who harm an ecosystem (in-cluding damage caused by off-road vehicles such as motorbikes or all-terrain vehicles) may be subject to enforce-ment actions ranging from a warning to a vio-lation ticket that carries a $575 fine.
More serious cases could result in a penalty of up to $100,000 and/or up to a year in jail.
Natural resource offi-cers from the ministry’s Compliance and En-forcement Branch regu-larly patrol the Koote-nay Boundary region.
The goal of these in-spections is to educate the public and promote safe and responsible recreational use of these areas.
The ministry takes non-compliance very seriously and natural re-source officers will be on the lookout for indi-viduals or groups that are not adhering to the rules.

“The life of the truck’s original motor and transmission had come to an end and with that Larry and his team had to search for a new one,” said Cody Swanson, one of the fire fighters who volunteered his time on the truck.
“The motor had low mileage and would be a perfect with for the truck.”
From start to finish, the project took about two months.
Lapointe also offered the use of his personal shop and tools to work on the truck and it was parked at that location for the duration of the project.
The truck is 34 feet long and so didn’t fit into Lapointe’s shop, rather it had the tail end sticking out into ele-ments, which for much of the time meant snow.
“The project was completed in time for this year’s Sam Steele Days,” Swanson said, adding the truck will be seen in the parade. “This piece of history will now once again be enjoyed by all the citi-

ter Mary Polak has de-termined that the Jumbo Glacier Resort project has not been substantially started.
“As a result, the envi-ronmental assessment certificate has expired and Glacier Resorts Ltd. cannot proceed with developing this project unless a new certificate is obtained,” stated a news release from the Ministry of Environ-ment.
The Environmental Assessment Act re-quires that all approved projects must be sub-
stantially started within the time limit set out in the certificate or the certificate expires.
Due to the Polak’s determination that the project is not substan-tially started, the certifi-cate expires. In the case of Jumbo Glacier Re-sort, the minister found that the physical activi-ties undertaken on the various components did not meet the thresh-old of a substantial-ly-started project.
Under consideration were factors such as:
• Submissions from Glacier Resorts Ltd., the Ktunaxa Nation Coun-
cil, and the Shuswap In-dian Band
• Guidance from the ourt decision in Taku River Tlingit First Na-tion v. British Columbia
• The Environmental Assessment Office’s substantially started de-termination report
• Her own observa-tions from a visit to the Jumbo Glacier Resort project site on Oct. 2014
• Information sub-mitted by the Ktunaxa Nation Council and the Shuswap Indian Band because the project is located in their asserted traditional territories.

Joe Foy, national campaign director with the Wilderness Com-
mittee, said the deci-sion was good news.
“We knew this proj-ect was already on thin ice,” Foy said. “The BC government must now take steps to ensure that the Jumbo Pass area is granted protected area
status, so this ill-con-ceived resort proposal never comes back again to endanger the region’s grizzly bears and other wildlife.”
Jumbo Glacier Re-sort is a proposed year-round ski resort devel-
opment in Jumbo Val-ley, 55 kilometres west of Invermere.

“This is our second one in Cranbrook,” Donna said. “We were here about five years ago.”
“We seldom go back to the same place, but here we are!” Billy said. “We have a lot of memo-ries here, a lot of friends here.”

“It’s bringing them together so they can embrace each other,” Billy said. “As a result of the networking, it ad-vances the cause of Country Gospel Music.”

“What every Chris-tian musician needs to understand is music was created by the Lord Himself,” Billy said. “And music should be some-thing that brings plea-sure to his heart. Since the beginning of CGMA, we’ve encouraged the artist to write songs to the Lord and sing unto him so that the outcome of what they do is the

The convention be-gins Monday at 5 p.m., with a getting-acquaint-ed session. Anywhere from 50 to 100 artists will be on hand, and ev-eryone will be intro-duced.
Over the following mornings, Tuesday through Friday, the days will begin with devo-tional sessions at 10 a.m. The afternoons will feature classes in minis-try and music related subjects. Starting at 5 p.m. each day, artists will perform in their specific categories — of which there are about 40. Judging is done by the artists’ peers, not a panel. After perfor-mances in each catego-ry conclude, ballots will be handed out to mem-bers of the association, who will vote accord-ingly. On Saturday night, June 27, the awards celebration will be held, and the awards in all categories handed out.

A staple tradition for
Father’s Day in June, the fishing derby has been indefinitely postponed due to the water level drawdown at Idlewild Lake.
There are no plans yet for a replacement
event in the stead of the fishing derby.
The water levels at Idlewild Lake are being lowered following a study from the city, which concluded that there are structural defi-
ciencies with the dam.The draw-down pro-
cess began in April and city officials hope to lower the levels roughly one metre by August.

F or her 13th birthday, her father bought her a diary; a fairly plain one filled
with undated blank pages and a red-checked cover. Like count-less teenage girls everywhere, she filled the pages with her hopes, her dreams, and her pri-vate thoughts. She wrote of her parents’ fighting, sibling rivalry, and her own petty jealousies. Puberty had struck, so she also wrote of hormones, body changes, her own sexuality, her first crush, and her first kiss. None of these entries are partic-ularly shocking or unique; they are no different than the thoughts and feelings of any teenage girl.
What is different is that this diary belonged to Anne Frank, and — far from being private — her personal confessions would be read by the world. This fact takes on extra signifi-cance, as Anne had hoped to be a journalist, and liked to imagine what it would be like for others to read what she wrote.
She also did not write her diary from the comfort of her own bedroom, stretched out on her bed listening to records. Anne’s world had gone mad, and her entries were made while her family hid from un-thinkable and unimaginable horrors. After someone told the
Nazis where Anne and her family were hiding, they were all sent to Auschwitz. Anne was torn from her family, had her head shaved, tattooed with a number, and then forced into hard-labour until she died of Typhus at the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp.
Only Anne’s father would survive the camps, and after the war he returned home. One of the people who helped hide the Frank family had kept their belongings in storage, which is where Anne’s father found her diary.
While some of his daugh-ter’s thoughts were shocking to him, none were as shocking as just how absolutely brilliant her writing was. Reading how Anne wished to become a jour-nalist, he decided to have her only work published.
This was no easy thing, as not everyone was enamoured by it as he was. While some publishers felt it may have his-torical value, they didn’t want to waste money on it. One (now famous) rejection letter told Mr. Frank that his daugh-ter “doesn’t, it seems to me, have a special perception or feeling which would lift that book above the ‘curiosity’ level.”
After dozens of rejections, Contact Books in Amsterdam agreed to publish it. ‘Het Ach-
terhuis’ (‘The Secret Annex’) hit the shelves on June 25, 1947. “If she had been here,” a teary-eyed Mr. Frank told the press, “Anne would have been so proud.
While numerous first-hand accounts were (and continue to be) published at the time, none captured the the extreme depth of Nazi terrors better than experiencing them through the eyes of a 13-year-old girl. The diary, now titled ‘The Diary of a Young Girl’ sweeps through Europe like no other book in the 20th century. It is soon translated into 60 languages.
Oddly, it was popular every-where except the United States. It took five years to reach the Americans, and — even though it had a preface by Eleanor Roosevelt — Doubleday Pub-lishing only releases 5,000 cop-ies. Sales lack until a writeup
about it the New York Times sparked a wave of interest which resulted in the book sell-ing in the millions.
Although John F. Kennedy found Anne’s book “a gift to the world,” and Nelson Mandela stated the Anne’s words gave him the strength and courage he needed to survive his 27-year prison sentence, it is teen-age girls who are most struck by Anne’s writing. Journalist Noel Duan found that Anne “was a peer and a keeper and sharer of secrets. She was curi-ous about body parts (hers and others). She wanted to be a star. She still believed in good-ness.”
Had she lived, Anne would have been 86 this month. It re-mains a mystery as to what else she would have written, but it no doubt would have been awesome. The planet contin-ues to be a better place be-cause of her.

for the resident deer of Kim-berley and Cranbrook. In the last week, there has been growth in the number of re-ports of defensive-aggressive behaviour from does in our cit-ies. Do you know what to do to ensure your safety in your yard, on your morning commute or while out walking your dog? Read below for a few recom-mendations from WildSafeBC on how you can help reduce conflicts with urban does and their young.
1. In your yard: discourage does from taking up residence by removing shelter.
Deer are attracted to our yards not just for the palatable vegetation, but for the security they can provide in tall grasses and shrubs, and shelter from buildings or other obstacles. Discourage does from choos-ing your yard as a nesting grounds by mowing your lawn regularly, trimming back over-grown vegetation and other-wise ensuring your line of sight is clear across your property. Moreover, travel with caution

around lots or properties abun-dant with thick vegetation or other convenient hiding plac-es. Discourage children from taking shortcuts to school through these spaces, too.
2. On your commute: ob-serve posted warnings of ag-gressive does in the area and give deer plenty of space.
Up-to-date wildlife sight-ings are available on WildSafe-BC’s interactive mapping sys-tem (www.wildsafebc.com/warp). These reports are also frequently posted to our Face-
book page (“WildSafeBC Kim-berley-Cranbrook) and the pages of our municipalities. Share any information you have on deer sightings freely with your families, friends, co-workers and neighbours to empower them to stay safe, too. In Kimberley, WildSafeBC and the City are working together to notify trail users of potentially aggressive does using local-ized, high visibility signboards. If you see these signs, observe them! Take an alternate path to get where you want to go.
3. Walking your dog: keep your dog under control and on leash at all times: however, if a deer attacks you, drop the leash.
Never allow your pets to ha-rass wildlife. Ensure your dog is under control by walking it on a leash. Should an aggressive doe approach you, release the leash prior to contact. Dogs are much more recognizable as a natural predator than humans, and the common target of aggression in conflict situations with protec-tive does. By dropping the leash when a deer approaches you, you disassociate yourself from the likely point of conflict, and allow your dog to escape on its own merit.

In 1879, the Government of Canada issued a report recommending that Residential Schools be established as a cost effective way of assimilating First Nations children into “white so-
ciety”. Canada’s first Prime Minister, John A
MacDonald, responded: “When the school is on the reserve, the child lives with its parents, who are savages, and though he may learn to read and write, his habits and training mode of thought are Indian. He is simply a savage who can read and write. It has been strongly impressed upon myself, as head of the Department, that Indian children should be withdrawn as much as possible from the parental influence, and the only way to do that would be to put them in central training industrial schools where they will acquire the habits and modes of thought of white men.”
Thus began a shameful episode in our history. The first school opened four years later in Saskatchewan, with others follow-ing quickly.
In 2007, our government implemented the Indian Residential School Settlement Agreement, which included such matters as compensation for former students of the schools and their families, as well as the establishment of the Truth and Recon-ciliation Commission (TRC). The mandate of the TRC is to “inform all Canadians of what happened in Indian Residential Schools.” The TRC also hopes to “guide and inspire Aboriginal peoples and Cana-dians in a process of reconciliation and renewed relationships that are based on mutual understanding and respect.”
On June 2, the TRC presented its final report after six long years of work. The
Commissioners and others listened to the stories of survivors of the Indian Residen-tial Schools. They were hard and painful stories to hear; they told of physical, sexu-al, emotional and psychological abuse.
Children at age five were taken from their homes, often forcibly, and moved to a school far from their homes. They were forbidden to speak their language or prac-tice their culture.
Survivors tell about hav-ing their mouths washed out with soap because they dared to speak their own language. Over and over again, stu-dents were told that they were inferior, that they were no good, that they were an
affront to the Creator. The purpose of the schools was, in the words of one survivor’s story, “to beat the Indian out of us and make us good, little white people.”
One woman tells the story of how, when she arrived at the school, her long beauti-ful braids, which represented her spiritual-ity and her essence, was cut off and thrown into the garbage. Another tells about how his relationship with his mother was forev-er damaged because she wouldn’t answer him about why she allowed him to be taken to the school.
Other stories, which can no longer be told, are about alcoholism and suicide be-cause they could no longer deal with the abuse they suffered at the schools.
In the time between the release of the TRC report and National Aboriginal Day (June 21), I have been watching and listen-ing to videotaped stories. You can find them at www.22days.ca. The stories break my heart. We can still see the residue of the agony of these survivors in their faces and hear the pain in their voices.
They are telling the truth about our so-
ciety, our prejudices, our shameful behav-ior towards those who are different than us.
The opening sentences of the Final Re-port of the TRC set the stage for the damn-ing report. “For over a century, the central goals of Canada’s Aboriginal policy were to eliminate Aboriginal governments; ignore Aboriginal rights; terminate the Treaties; and, through a process of assimilation, cause Aboriginal peoples to cease to exist as distinct legal, social, cultural, religious, and racial entities in Canada. The estab-lishment and operation of residential schools were a central element of this pol-icy, which can best be described as ‘cultur-al genocide.’”
Many people believe that “I didn’t do anything; it’s not my fault! It was way be-fore my time!” I have heard that sentiment too many times.
Trouble is, it’s not the truth. We are part of a society that did this. We have all bene-fitted from the shameful treatment of First Nations people. As the TRC Report states, this is not an aboriginal problem; it’s a Ca-nadian problem.
If we are to move forward, we must all take responsibility for our past. The TRC Report gives us all a chance to do the right thing—to reach out to one another, apolo-gize for our shameful past, and move into a new future marked by reconciliation and hope.
In that sense, this moment in our histo-ry is a gift for us all. We are being invited to invest ourselves in a new future marked by reconciliation and compassion, by an ac-ceptance of the fact that our differences are not something to be wiped out, but to be celebrated and embraced.

The Cranbrook Ban-dits look to build upon a successful stretch of play when they host the 2014 Montana State ‘A’ champion Glacier ‘A’ Twins in American Le-gion Baeball action this Saturday at Confedera-tion Park.
The Bandits, 2014 Montana State ‘B’ champions, disposed of the Glacier ‘B’ Twins in consecutive outings (11-9, 13-3) this past Sunday but will face stiffer com-petition when they hit the diamond this Satur-day at 1 p.m.
“We need to main-tain this positive vibe we have going now,” said veteran pitcher Tyler Thorn after Sunday’s 13-3 win.
“We need to just have fun and not worry about who we’re playing or who’s pitching, who’s on the mound or what kind of hitters they have. We just need to go out there and have a good time.”
Prior to Sunday’s pair of victories, the Bandits had dropped a tough set to the Kootenai Valley Rangers, falling 7-4 and 11-1 in a doubleheader June 7.
The home wins that followed boosted Cran-brook’s boys of summer
to 11-8-1 on the season. With roughly half of the campaign in the books, the Bandits hope to maintain momentum.
“We’re having a great year,” said catcher Bran-don Ouillette. “We could even have more wins than we do.”
Of the Bandits eight losses, five have been by two runs or less. Apart from a couple blowout losses (10-0 at Libby, May 31 and 11-1 at Koo-tenai Valley, June 7) the Bandits have been in every game they’ve dropped.
Ouillette knows a lit-tle more focus in those close games could easily bring about victory and the hope is to dig in moving forward.
“We’ve got to stay on task and not get lazy,” Ouillette said. “We’ve got to keep it going, keep hitting the ball and not fall asleep out there.
“We’re way ahead of last year. We’re just going to try to keep it going and hopefully we can go on to win state
again this year.”The Bandits found
themselves 8-12 after 20 games during the sum-mer of 2014, so the cur-rent mark of 11-8-1 is certainly progress from what the club had achieved at this point last season.
As a result, head coach Paul Mrazek is happy with his club’s progress as they work past the halfway mark of the campaign.
“There are a few things to work on, but the kids are getting more comfortable,” Mrazek said. “They’re getting more confident. We’ve done a lot of the teach-ing and now it’s a lot more reps.”
The next set of reps come this Saturday at 1 p.m. when the Bandits fire up a doubleheader against the Glacier ‘A’ Twins.
The Bandits have yet to face the ‘A’ Twins this season. In two meetings last year, Glacier claimed two wins -- 11-3 and 10-0 in Whitefish, Mont.
Following Saturday’s home doubleheader, the Bandits are sched-uled to visit Polson, Mont., on Sunday, tak-ing on the Mission Val-ley ‘B’ Mariners at 1 p.m. before facing the ‘A’ Mariners at 3:30 p.m.

The 25-year-old post-ed a record of 3-2-0, a goals against average of 1.99, and a save percent-
age of .932 in five games with the American Hockey League’s Utica Comets last season.
In 21 games with the ECHL’s Ontario Reign this season, Cannata posted a record of 12-6-2, a 2.02 goals against average, and a .927 save
percentage. He also posted two shutouts for Ontario during the 2015 ECHL playoffs.
The Wakefield, Mass., native was origi-nally selected by Van-couver in the sixth round, 173rd overall, in the 2009 draft.

The city of Glendale is seeking court approval to skip a $3.75 million quarterly payment to the Arizona Coyotes.
An attorney hired by the city filed a motion Wednesday asking a Maricopa County Supe-rior Court judge to allow Glendale to either with-
hold the fourth-quarter payment due July 1 to IceArizona or deposit the money in an escrow account.
IceArizona owns the NHL team and manages the Gila River Arena for Glendale.
The City Council voted last week to termi-nate a 15-year, $225 mil-lion lease agreement
with the Coyotes, citing a conflict-of-interest law.
The city says two Glendale employees who worked on the arena management deal that was approved in July 2013 later went to work for the Coyotes.
A judge granted the team’s request for a tem-porary injunction last Friday.

Going into Sunday’s round-of-16 match with No. 19 Switzerland at B.C. Place Stadium, Canada’s World Cup re-cord against European opposition is 0-9-1. Should it get past the debutante Swiss, a matchup with either No. 6 England or No. 11 Norway looms in the quarter-finals
Coach John Herd-man’s record at the Ca-nadian helm against Eu-ropean teams in all competitions is 18-9-5, including wins over Britain and France in the quarter-final and bronze-medal match at the 2012 Olympics.
“The bottom line is we know the Europeans are very well-orga-
nized,” Herdman told a media conference call Thursday. “They have a very disciplined ap-proach to their style and they’re outstanding on the counter-attack. That’s what they play every weekend in the European leagues.
“So we have to find a way, Canada, because we don’t have another chance. We don’t get another chance at this game. And our style and our approach will have to be better to overcome what the Swiss are going to throw at us.”
Sophie Schmidt is ex-pected to play Sunday, albeit in pain. The influ-ential midfielder from Abbotsford, B.C., came off in the 81st minute of Canada’s 1-1 tie with the Netherlands on Monday after falling awkwardly challenging for a ball.
Herdman said she has a painful bruise around the hip that has limited her mobility.
“She’ll not miss the opportunity of playing at B.C. Place in her home
town in this crucial match for Canada, no matter how much pain she’s in,” said Herdman.
Pain aside, Herdman is expecting big things from Schmidt, who can be both goal-scorer and provider.
“The tournament is really just starting to begin now,” he said. “These are the big games where big players step up and that’s what we’re hoping for for So-phie Schmidt. This is where you get a chance to sort of write your name in football history when you play in these big matches.”
Captain Christine Sinclair is no stranger to stepping up, saving the day for Canada in the tournament opener with a late penalty against China. Canada will be looking to her to add to her total of 154 goals, to help spark a Canadian offence that misfired more often than not in the first round.
Eighth-ranked Cana-da had targeted a round-
of-16 return for veteran midfielder Diana Mathe-son, who is coming off knee surgery and a bro-ken foot. Herdman said Matheson suffered a minor setback prior to the Dutch game with a mild quad strain but could be available for se-lection if she trains well.
Herdman calls the Swiss a well-organized team whose players ply their trade at the highest level of women’s foot-ball, in Germany and Sweden.
But the big threats are forwards Ramona Bachmann and Lara Dickenmann.
“It really is Bach-mann and Dickenmann that set that team alight and they’re in very good form from what we can see in this tournament,” said Herdman.
Bachmann and mid-fielder Fabienne Humm both had hat tricks in a 10-1 win over Ecuador.

What started out as dinner-time conversation between Heather Klein and Marshall Burrows turned into a 10-month odyssey through 15 countries across North and South America.
The couple, both originally from Cranbrook, were living in Calgary and looking to start their respective careers after finishing school when they de-cided to embark on an epic road trip down to the end of the world—the tip of Argenti-na.
“The idea was on the table for over a year, but one day he actually was like, ‘Do you want to do it?’ Klein said, “and I said, ‘Yep, lets do it.’
“…We had been sort of thinking about the trip for a while,” she added. “We had inherited a Suburban from his [Burrows’] parents and created a bed in the back with storage underneath, which was a per-fect way to camp.”
The decision made last year, they began to plan.
The Suburban was souped up with a dual-battery system to charge while driving, fans and lights were wired in, while a hookup for a cooler-style fridge was installed.
Underneath the bed was storage space for food, cloth-ing, and an awning.
Hours and hours of internet research went into the process as well to figure out the logis-tics of travel and vehicle insur-ance, driving license require-ments, budgets and Visas.
They also needed time to
save up enough money for the adventure, as they left their condo and moved in with some friends in order to put everything they could into the bank as fast as possible.
“Our determining factor was our bank account,” Klein joked. “So we picked a reason-able budget per day that we thought we could work with and that gave us 10 months.”
On July 4, 2014, they hit the road.
Determining the route was simple enough—Highway 101 took them down the U.S. coast to the Mexican border before eventually linking up to the Pan-American highway in Central America.
Once they got into the southern end of Mexico, the plan was to spend half their time in Central America and the other half in South Ameri-ca.
“We tried to pick the things we knew we wanted to see and then spend a few days there to fully soak up what we were doing, instead of going through Lonely Planet and picking out the top-10,” Klein said.
On the road, the countries seemed to fly by. Starting in Calgary, they headed down the U.S. west coast, into Mexi-co, Guatemala, El Salvador, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, and Panama, where they hit the biggest challenge of their ad-venture—getting the truck across the Darien Gap.
The Gap, a large undevel-oped and environmentally sensitive area, breaks the con-nection between the
Pan-American Highway in Central and South America.
The plan was to ship the vehicle from Panama into Co-lumbia at a cost of $1,200 and hope that it wasn’t the one in three vehicles that turned out to be smashed and stripped when it reached its destina-tion.However, they navigated the proper permitting and documentation process and made it to Columbia.
From there, it was onto Ec-uador, Peru, Bolivia, Chile and Argentina.
After reaching their goal, they turned around and head-ed up to Uruguay, where they sold everything they could—including the truck—and met up with family for a brief holi-day together before flying back to Calgary in May 2015.
Along the way there were many highlights. Diving for clams in Ensenada and at-tending an ancient cleansing ritual in a Tamazcal (sweat lodge) in San Cristabol—both in Mexico.
There was the salt flats in Bolivia and the feeling of ac-complishment when they hit Ushuaia—their southern-most point, in Argentina.
Both avid rock climbers, they hit up spots in Guatemala and experienced a 5.4-magni-tude earthquake while on a 40-foot rock face in Chile.
However, one of the more enduring memories for Klein was seeing the turtle arriba-das—a natural phenomenon where thousands of turtles ar-rive on a beach to lay their eggs—in Nicaragua.

Some park rangers di-rected them to a beach where they were anticipat-ing the event, though they didn’t know exactly which day it was going to happen.
Klein and Burrows, along with a few friends, went to the one-kilometre long stretch of sand to check it out.
“The two of us and our friends are the only ones on
the beach and there are al-ready over 1,000 turtles coming up out of the ocean, up onto the sand and mak-ing the holes, laying their eggs, burying them, and coming back to the beach,” Klein said.
“In that night, as the sun was setting, more and more turtles were coming up and the park ranger said that over 15,000 turtles were ex-
pected to come on this one night.”
Now back home and re-adjusting to the North American lifestyle, the two plan to refill the bank ac-count before dreaming up their next adventure.

Invermere valley echoWildsight Golden has
just completed the first-ev-er Columbia Wetlands Waterbird Survey (CWWS), conducted during the spring bird migration. Nearly 40 volunteers set out to count and identify birds on three dates and at 64 sites located along the Co-lumbia Wetlands, from Canal Flats to Donald.
Over 90 species of bird were spotted, and nearly 15,000 birds were counted over three mornings, great results for this citizen sci-ence project. Spring survey data details are posted at: http://wildsight.ca/colum-biawetlandswaterbirdsur-vey.
“The most wonderful thing about the Waterbird Survey is the citizen science aspect. Local bird enthusi-asts have a great excuse to get a bit more serious about bird watching, enjoy the sights and sounds in the wetlands and contribute valuable information,” said Joan Dolinsky, president of Wildsight Golden.
The Columbia Wetlands
are home to numerous spe-cies of waterfowl. As part of the Pacific Flyway, they pro-vide crucial habitat for mi-gratory birds. Every year, at least a billion bird species travel on the Pacific Flyway, flying from as far south as Patagonia and north to Alaska. During spring and fall migrations, waterbird species — from the mighty Trumpeter Swan to the little Pie-billed Grebe — flock to the marshlands in the Co-lumbia Valley to breed, nest and feed in its precious clean waters. But despite the recognized importance of the Columbia Wetlands for birds and other wildlife, there is little information about the biodiversity found there.
Seeing the lack of bird data available for the Co-lumbia Wetlands, local bi-ologist Rachel Darvill with Goldeneye Ecological Ser-vices and Wildsight Golden set out to collect baseline data on birds.
One of Darvill’s goals is to have the Columbia Wet-lands recognized with Im-portant Bird Area (IBA) sta-
tus. IBA’s hold important conservation value interna-tionally; they recognize sig-nificant areas of bird habitat and promote international collaboration for the pro-tection of the world’s birds. The CWWS aims to run for at least five consecutive years in hopes that we can gather enough data to achieve IBA, as well as to educate and engage citi-zens.
“I am so thrilled with the amazing amount of regional participation, interest, and bird data already gathered through this fantastic pro-gram,” said Darvill. “Spring came early this season and you can’t tame Mother Na-ture, so the survey dates did narrowly miss the peak of the spring migration. How-ever, we were able to get numerous locals involved and trained, we did count and identify many thou-sands of birds this spring, and we took 133 kids out-side in Golden on birding field trips to Reflection Lake… I’d say that these first accomplishments are defi-nitely worth celebrating.”

Dear Annie: For the past 20 years, a good female friend of mine and I have gotten together every few weeks for walks, lunch and movies. The problem is, whenever we go to the movies, she always picks. I’m a pretty easygoing person and will see whatever she wants because even if the movie doesn’t sound great, I’m willing to give it a try. But whenever I say I would really love to see such-and-such a movie, she will never go. She gives excuses, like reading a review she didn’t like. In all the years we’ve seen films together, she has never once agreed to see one of my choices. Don’t all relationships require compromise? I feel like I do all the giving and she does all the taking. When I brought it up to her, she replied, “Well, everyone doesn’t like every movie.” I know this problem isn’t earthshattering, but it is affecting me enough to question whether she is truly a friend. When she does this type of thing, it seems as though she has to control everything we do, which is not my idea of friendship. Any suggestions? -- Had Enough of This Dear Had: Does she do this only with movies? If so, she may simply not be adventurous enough to see anything she isn’t certain she will like, or she may be uncomfortable with certain types of films, such as horror movies or documentaries and too embarrassed to say so. But if she tries to dominate every decision (type of restaurant, where you go walking, etc.), then yes, she is the controlling type. You say she is a good friend. We assume she is pleasant company and there are other things you like about her. You have multiple ways of dealing with this: Put up with her choices and see the films that interest you with other like-minded people; take movies off the list of activities to do together; tell her the next movie is your pick or you aren’t interested; or talk to her, letting her know her intransigence on the issue is building resentment and damaging the friendship. Dear Annie: Thank you for standing firm on your advice to “Blainville, Quebec,” who thought it was OK for a wedding guest to ask to bring her boyfriend. I host many events and am amazed by how many people do not understand that an invitation addressed solely to one person does not automatically include a plus one. It’s not only the budget. It’s the seating arrangements, keeping to the guest limits, accommodations and meals. “Just one more” makes a huge difference, especially when several people want to add someone. I have had people ask to bring their neighbor “who wants to see your lovely home,” parents who ask to bring three extra children to a child’s birthday party at the circus, and of course, the people who don’t RSVP and just show up. It is wrong to put a bride on the spot by making her feel obligated to incur an additional expense or explain to her new in-laws why she is changing the guest limit. It is with great sadness that we announce Fred’s passing after a lengthy battle with COPD. He passed away comfortably at East Kootenay Regional Hospital in Cranbrook on Tuesday, June 9, 2015 at 58 years of age.
Fred was born in Kimberley to Mike & Iris Kavanagh, a pioneering family recognized for service to the Cominco mine. Fred worked many years with Crestbrook Forest Industry in Creston and Cranbrook retiring due to ill health. Fred lived most of his life in Kimberley and Cranbrook.
Fred loved hockey, fishing, camping and spending quality time with family. He had a lifetime love for hockey and was an avid Calgary Flames fan right to the end.
Fred is survived by his 4 sisters, Kathy (Claude) Inglehart of Abbotsford, BC, Pat (Fred) Inglehart of Surrey, BC, Wendy (Lloyd) Klein of Vernon, BC and Joyce Kavanagh of Cranbrook, BC; and many nieces, nephews and cousins in the Kootenays and other areas of BC. He was predeceased by his brother Billy (1951), his father Mike (1971), his mother Iris (1995) and many other relatives.
A graveside service for Fred will be held at the Kimberley Cemetery at 1:30 pm on Saturday, June 20, 2015 followed by a reception at McPherson Funeral Home in Kimberley.
The family would like to thank the nurses and doctors at East Kootenay Regional Hospital for the wonderful care they provided for Fred, especially the last 30 days.
Fred, we love you very much and you will be missed but your love and memories will live in our hearts forever.

B.C. started the week with seven new wildfires on its map, for a total of 470 recorded so far in a hot start to the 2015 forest fire sea-son.
More than 60,000 hectares have burned so far, most of that from 150 fires in the Prince George fire centre re-gion.
Two new fires were reported on southeas-term Vancouver Island and a third at Nimpkish Lake on northern Van-couver Island this week. By Wednesday there were 14 new and active fires in the Koo-tenay and Okanagan regions.
Environment Cana-da forecast a 60 per cent chance of rain by Friday in the Kamloops and Prince George areas, with continued dry weather expected through the weekend in the Lower Mainland and Vancouver Island. Chilliwack set new high temperature records at the beginning of this
week, and drier than normal conditions have prevailed across much of the province.
The Cisco Road fire south of Lytton in the Fraser Canyon grew to 1,370 hectares and was only 20 per cent con-
tained as of Wednes-day. The Lytton First Nations issued an evac-uation order and other areas of the Thompson Nicola Regional Dis-trict were on evacua-tion alert, with sprin-klers deployed to pro-
tect threatened build-ings.
The Little Bobtail Lake fire west of Prince George was contained at about 25,000 hect-ares with no loss of structures, but its in-tense burn weakened
root systems of stand-ing trees and people were still being warned to avoid the area.
Another large fire burned 18,000 hectares near Fort Nelson before it was contained with the help of rainfall.

from B.C.’s children’s representative and the provincial health officer says vulnerable children in the province start life behind their peers and stay behind.
The Growing Up in B.C. report by Mary Ellen Turpel-Lafond
and Dr. Perry Kendall says life for vulnerable children, including those in government care and aboriginal chil-dren and youth, remains challenging.
Turpel-Lafond says serious gaps in chil-dren’s well-being re-main, including that al-most 60 per cent of
youth in care don’t graduate from high school.
Although she also says the report identifies some positive trends, such as declines in teen pregnancy rates and more aboriginal chil-dren graduating from high school.
Both Kendall and
Turpel-Lafond say they have concerns about the lack of information around children’s wel-fare because neither the province nor the federal government keep a reli-able data bank of infor-mation.
More than 200 youth from across B.C. were consulted for the report.

for a lifelong farmer says his client wants a couple of his animals back as pets after 51 of them were seized over concerns they were roaming around the neighbour-hood.
Jay Michi said SPCA officials executed a warrant on a farm op-erated by Paul Sabyan, seizing 31 piglets, 18 sows, one boar and one bay stallion.
“They were concerned he’s too old to husband them at (age) 77,” Michi said.
“He just wants his horse back and one pet pig.”
Michi will apply for the two animals to be returned through an SPCA review process.
Marcie Moriarty, the agency’s chief prevention and enforce-
ment officer, said a review is un-derway. If unsuccessful, Sabyan can file an appeal with the B.C. Farm Industry Review Board, and ultimately the courts.
Moriarty said the animals were seized on June 2 at Sabyan’s farm in Barriere, B.C., near Kamloops.
“They met the definition of distress under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act,” she said. “The vast majority have been sur-rendered.”
The animals were placed in foster care, she said.
Sabyan pleaded guilty and was sentenced in March under the Livestock Act for allowing his ani-mals to roam on neighbours’ property and a nearby highway.
During sentencing, a Crown lawyer outlined the frustration of neighbours and the danger to
motorists from the pigs, which repeatedly escaped an enclosure and ranged in size from 90 to 400 kilograms.
Sabyan also pleaded guilty under the Motor Vehicle Act to allowing domestic animals on a highway.
Provincial court Judge Len Marchand called the matter “more than a nuisance.”
“There was significant damage to neighbours’ property and risks to motorists on the Yellowhead Highway,” he said.
As part of his one-year proba-tion term, Sabyan was required to provide proof of his fence repair and evidence of inspections.
Michi said Sabyan has com-plied with the court order and that the SPCA action is unrelated to his probation.
