CRilHORlS COfllfllOIS'lii addition to thenews items in this issue of our newsletter,I will add just a few personal comments.

First of all, Marilyn and I like Mexicovery much. From a physical standpoint, theclimate is ideal. We are now having therainy season with shakers usually everyevening. This contributes to the fresh-clean air and the thriving tropical vegetation. We like the people who for the mostpart are friendly and very eager to getacquainted with the light skinned "Norte-americanos". We have already made severalgood contacts with middle-class technicaland professional people whose present religious ties are not so strong but v^hat wepray v;e may be able to influence them withthe • simple New Testament message in thefuture•

We have rented a very comfortable andreasonably priced house in one of the medium to better sections of the city. Itslocation and arrangement xd.ll make it idealas a place in which to begin v7orship services in September unless other facilitiesseem more advisable by then.

Although \<re are very musy now with ourlanguage study and limited service with thetwo existing congregations,X7e are anxiouslylooking-forward to deeper personal involvement in an osqDanded ministry here in theGuadalajara area in the coming months.

Many of o^ supporters have been anxiously follov/ing our reports of efforts to-establish a congregation at the village ofSan Luis, about 4-5 riiiles from Guadalajara. This v.^ork vras started by Clinton Looneythis past Spring after one of our Guadalajara Christians, ^irs. Montoho, v/ent backto her home yillage, San Luis.

Our main problem there has been strongand active Rcnmai Catholic opposition. Suchtactics as false arrest and fine by thelocal magistrate, i-oarches of fifty womenand two altar boys right into the home ofLrs. Kontoho, and five letters threateningphysical violence, property damage, andeven death have been used.

After much thought and prayer and onthe advice of a mature la\jyer in Guadalajara, !t?s. Kontoho has moved back to oneof the suburbs of Guadalajara for personalsafety.

Ue still go out to San Luis each Fridayevening and hold services in ^^^s• MontohobhoTiie. Ihtrimidation of those who at first, swelled the attendance to over one hundredhas drastically • cut our attendance. TheCaptain of the State Police has promisedprotection of religious liberties, and wepray that the providence of God idll allowthe work to continue so that sincere soulscan hear the full truth of God^s TTord.

ITe are gratefulto tills congregation for tliis decision andwe pledge wise use of their funds.

THE FIRST SERVICE CF COLONY CHURCH OF

CHRIST, THE NEN ENGLISH lAI'JGUAGE CONGREGATION Hi GUADAUJARA, MICC-NAS HELD ai

-OCTOBER 3.

This congregation is a part of the longrange planning of the work of the Crandells in Mexico. . As originally planned, this group is the first step to a bilingual congregation with services in boththe Spanish and English languages.

Attendance was small for the first service, partly because of bad weather. 3?ro-motlon in three weelcly English languagepapers, the English section- of the largeGuadalajara daily,'and in thirteen hotels, motels, and other gathering places forAmericans is expected to slovfly increasethis nur;.ber in the coming vreeks. .

For the present, services are . beingheld in the Crandell*s home. Such tilingsas nexw folding chairs, attractive pulpitand coi-.mmion table, and like nev7 communion ware given by the Tfest Lansing Churchof Christ converts the spacious livingroom into an inviting place of worship. There is room for at least thirty people, plus two separate rooms for children'sclasses.

Because there are over ten thousandEnglish speaking people in the Guadalajcqraarea, it is felt that this new work is aneeded part of the overall efforts of theIviissionaries serving here. Pray for thisnew work in the coming xweeksl

LMcyct siioyThe Crandells continue their concentra

Dear Christian Friends?

Greetings in Christ from the Crandells in I'fexico, Especially at this timeof the year our thoughts are turned to our dear friends and relatives North of theBordert This vri.ll be the first Christmas in our recollection that we have notspent at least part of the Holiday Season with some of our family.

The downtown section of Guadalajara has Christmas decorations in probably amore profuse manner than most of our cities in the U.S. The Mexicans, of course,go all out in the celebration of any holidays The same rush of merchandising thatwe experience at home is also much in evidence here. Of course, the climate ismuch different than we are used toj and once in a while rkrilyn gets teased with afew phrases of "l-Zhite Christmas", since she likes snow much more than Ed.

He end the fourth course of our langiaage study program on the seventeenth ofthis month. Naturally the studies become more complex and difficult as we godeeper into the language. Me are looking fon^rard to a short break during the Holi-^day Season and hope to do a little sightseeing within a day's drive from Guadalajara. Until now there just hasn't been time for any.

The work among our Mexican brethren is progressing in a steady fashion. Services are ncnj being held in four different locations on Sundays and in three during the -week. Ue participate in the services at two of these locations along withour English language congregations. There have been six baptisms among our Mexicanbrethren during the past vreeks.

Gar English language group which was begun in October is slow in growing.Attendance averages about ten in number. One of our most faithful families recently returned to the States because of personal problems encountered here. Just recently wo have been concentrating on personal calls cm all residents of the fourtrailer courts in the city.

Me have just completed a series of color slides vrith tape recorded narrationwhich tells of our labors here. As soon as duplicate sets ore made, these will bemade available to our churches by our Fon-zarding Agents in Michigan,

As we close the year 1965 we have much to be thankful for. In a short year'stime wo have raised our financial support, become well settled in our field ofservice, are well along in our learning of the Spanish language, and arc busy atwork both with our Mexican brethren and the English spealcing people here in Guadalajara, Me again want to express our heartfelt thanksgiving both-bo our God andto you who have been so helpful in making .all of tliis-possible.

Sincerely in Him,

tcS.4 ynEd and I-iarilyn Grandell
