ow,Ireallywouldhavelikedtohavebeen heading north to the LaconiaBike Week myself, but my summer

classschedulehasmeprettymuchboundandtied to Greenville until August. It’s such a greatrally, andIwantedtobeabletosharethe experience with the Upstate riders whoprobably haven’t had the chance themselves toheadthatfarnorth.Luckyforme,IfoundoutthatseveraloftheNYCFireRidersMCwereheadingout, andtheyagreedtobemyeyes and ears. So, thanks to daily briefings with the guys duringtheir trip, we can alllivevicariouslythroughthem.

Laconia, NewHampshire,hasjustcel-ebrated their 86th An-nualBikeRally. Now,the record books saythat the rally actuallystartedin1923withtheLoudon Classic mo-torcycle race, althoughmotorcyclists had beengathering there, in thesummertime,asearlyas1916. In1930, theFederationofAmericanMotorcyclists officially recognized the event aspartof theGypsyTour,andtherallybe-camefamousforitsmotorcycleracesandhillclimbs.

I first met Ken “Whitey” Christiansen atoneoftheFireRiderspartiesduringbikeweekinMyrtleBeach. Aninstantbond, aswebothsportmatchingIndianLarrytats, thered question mark accented with a choppersymbol.Whiteyagreedtobemymaincon-tactandtakepicturesduringthetrip.

The guys planned a nine-hour route, leavingStatenIslandonSundayandheadingoutthroughtheCatskillMountains.Whiteyled the ride and earned a new nickname,“Food Nazi,” for refus-ing to constantly stopfor food along the way.“Hey, I was ready to get where we were going,”Whitey told me. “They can belly-ache all theywant;plentyoffoodandbeerwhenwegetthere.”They pulled into WeirsBeachabout5pm.ThetorrentialrainstormsonSundayhadleftthedowntownareaprettyempty.But,hey,nocrowdsmeansnothav-ingtowaitonbeer,sotheguysheadedtotherentedhousetodumptheirgear.Thehousetheyrentedwasprettymuchinthemiddleofnowhere,witheverytree-linedstreetlookingpretty much the same as the next one. “We hadtouseGPSjustabouteverynightjusttogetbacktothedamnhouse!Man,identicalstreets inpitchblack,no lightcomingfromanywhere.”

So, the first night in town, the guys de-

cided to head to the Broken Spoke Saloon.Turnsout,therewasgoingtobeahugeEastMeetsWestbikerbuild-offbetweenPaulCoxof Brooklyn, NY (Indian Larry’s former part-ner-in-crime)andChica,theJapanesebuilderout of Huntington Beach, CA. There wasgoing tobeabig ridewith thebuilders thefollowing Saturday, ending with a people’s choicejudginglaterthatnight.

Monday morning, the club decided torideouttotheNewHampshireMotorSpeed-wayfortheU.S.VintageMotorcycleGrand

The guys finally reached the top of themountain–andsnow. The temperaturedroppedabout40degrees,andtheywereallint-shirts.Whiteysaidtheyalltriedtoactlikeit wasn’t that bad, until one of the guys finally admitted he couldn’t feel his fingers anymore. So they decided to head back down. “Now, what I’m about to tell you is going to sound likecompletebullshit,Iknow.ButIswearithappened! I’ve got witnesses…” The club was coming down the mountain when, outof nowhere, a large deer came flying off the

cliff and literally bellyflopped in front of three oftheirbikes. Theguyslocked up their brakes, skiddingsideways, astherestoftheclubfollowedsuit, tryingnot to smackinto them. “The friggin’ deer gets up and runsaway.Justunbelievable.

So, after a good night’s sleep and a great day’s ride, the guys were ready to head out andhitthedowntownbars.Theweatherhadclearedup, thestreetswerepackedwithbikes, andthebikiniedbeer tubgirlswerealreadybreaking a sweat. “Yea, we were having a blast – taking pictures with the girls, doingshots…it was all fun and games for a while.” Thatis, untilthemanagementoftheLaconiaRoadhousepolitelyaskedtheFireRiderstoleave. “Guess we got a bit loud…and drunk.

It wasall in fun. They were really nice about it,though.”

Whitey and some of the older clubmembers were pretty beat anyways, andready to call it a night. “Man, next thing we know, we’re hearing Johnny Cash music blaring downstairs and guys friggin’ beat-ing on pots and pans. I was like, ‘Are you kidding me?’” Guess the younger club guys weren’t quite ready to call it a night. “But I wastootiredandtoodrunktogetupanddoanythingaboutit.”

The next morning, Whitey woke up–hangover-freeandgladhe turned inearly– and decided to head downstairs to wipedown his bike. “I’m in a good mood; skies are clear, figure it’ll be a great day to ride. ThenIseethebikes.”Withblacktireskidsalloverthedriveway, andbitsandpiecesofburnt rubber all over just about every bike,it was pretty obvious someone had decidedtodoalittlemidnightburnout. And, intheextreme darkness of the woods, the knuck-lehead probably didn’t notice how much of hisbacktirehewassharingwitheverybodyelse’s ride.

“Oh man, I was ready to kill somebody atthispoint.Wedraggedalltheirlittleasses

to see who hadthe bright idea. “Angry Bob”

was the only one who wouldn’t make eyecontactwithme.”Whiteywasalreadyfiguring that “Angry Bob” was going to be picking up the next few tabs…or ten. “Next thing we knew, he had packed up and friggin’ left to head back to New York! That’s okay, though;weknowwherehelives.”

I talked to Whitey this morning – theguyshadanuneventfulridehomewithfairlydecentweather.Noneoftheguyshaveheardfrom “Angry Bob” yet. I’m hearing rumors of retaliation…but that will have to be an-otherstory.

CrankIt Entertainment Magazine: Your voice is distinct, to say the least. Did you have to really make an effort to produce your voice’s sound, or is it more your natural sound?

Mickey Cash: I havelovedtosingforever, andof course I come froma singing family. As ayouth, I thought I wantedtosoundlikeotherpeople.I thought (my) sound was bad, but I can’t getawayfrom it.Mydadsays there is thiscertain something God put in your voicethat He doesn’t give to just everyone, but he gaveittoyou.Theuniquenessofit.AsakidI was self-conscious of it, but now I’m glad I’ve got that. I’ve just always had this deep, brassysoundingvoice.

CrankIt: How much of your song material is drawn from your per-sonal experiences?

Cash: I’m going to say 90 percent, if not bet-ter. At least 90. I cannot and don’t sing a song I don’t feel. If I can’t feel my feet are in it, I can’t deliver the message. “What A Woman Goes Thru” was written for me, a collabo-rationwithJimmyLambertandFredFoster.Theywrote that songwithme inmindandgaveittome.

CrankIt: When you’re playing, which song gets the strongest response from the crowd?

Cash: This town (St. Au-gustine,Fla.)musthearmesing “Angel From Mont-gomery,” the John Pinesong.

CrankIt: Would mu-

Cash: It absolutely would have, yes. I can’t escape it. It’s just one of those things that grabs ya and you can’t shake it, so you might aswelljoinit.

ery soon Greenville, S.C. and theoutlying area will get a chanceto hear The Jones Machine live,

fronted by a hometown boy who made outverywellonSeason7ofAmerican Idol,JoshJones.

Thanks to that performance onAmeri-ca’s most popular show, Fox CarolinaofferedJonesachancetoauditionfortherestofhisband, The Jones Machine. Dusty Johnson(drums),JasonHudson(leadandbassguitar)andMattGeib(bassandelectricguitar)wonoutandimpressedJonesthroughtheauditionprocess, and three months later, they’re set to release a four-track EP showing how they’ve comealong.

Jonesalreadyhadsomeofhisownmu-sic available online, some he told CrankIt Entertainment he’s been working on since 2000.Aftermaking it to the top30 in Idol,the27-year-oldmusiciansaidhetriedtogetaband going in Atlanta, but that “it proved very difficult” to get a solid act going. He made his way back to Greenville with “no plan, no nothing...verylowhopesforeverything,”hesaid,whenthetelevisionstationapproachedhimwiththeauditionidea.

But when listening to a track like “The SouthFloridaDream,”which Jones saidherecorded all the instrumentationbyhimself, the bouncy sound and the bizarre imagerycome together for a highly memorable first impression.AlthoughhesaidthegrindoftheAtlantamusicscenewasstartingtowearonhim,fanshavemuchtolookforwardtosinceJonescamebacktoUpstateSouthCarolinatochasethemusicdream.

CrankIt spent some more time withJones, filling in readers on what they can expectfromTheJonesMachineinthenear-future.

CrankIt Entertainment: Do you get recognized a lot from Idol?

Josh Jones:IgotrecognizedbyaVietnamesemailmantheotherday.WhenIgointhegro-cery store, people say‘Hey, you’re that guy off TV!’ That is a plus. It’s publicity that there’s no way to buy it. It’s awesome. We have im-mediatelycomeupovernight, because peoplearoundGreenvilleknowabout us. And thereare other bands aroundtown that people don’t know. Now people aregonna know ... can they walk the walk? We’re readytobringit.

CrankIt: Do fans really expect a band like yours to have such a

distinct, strong keyboard sound on their tracks nowadays?

Jones:Intheplansforthefuture, wheneverwe play a large gig, we’ll have (our guest pianistJustinMichels).LikeDaveMatthews,it’s going to be one of those things. The Bi-Lo Center (in Greenville) is huge. If an actcomes to town and there’s a (gig available), I’d have Justin Michels. It’s nice to have a littlesomethinginthere.Iwouldlovetohave

him full-time, but itjust doesn’t work out withhisschedule.

CrankIt: Who in the band comes up with the song-writing?

Jones: At this point, theearlystage,Iguessmost of the ideas andlyrics come from me.

But what’s invaluable that everyone contrib-utes, I don’t write every single part. We’re still trying to fill up all the space between thefour(EP)songswithallofourcontribu-tions. What’s so invaluable with (The Jones

They’re very heavily involved with the compositionofthesongs.Dustythedrummerwouldhavea unique beat for a song, and Matt wouldfollowinthekickofthedrum, andcomeupwithanideathatwouldmakethelyricsandtheversessoundtotallydifferent, butitwouldbegold.

CrankIt: How far outside of Green-ville have you all ventured in your live performances?

Jones: Columbia. We actually played at abiker club, for The Warlocks biker gang. ItwaslikeabigWarlock, motorcycleJuneJam.Itwaspretty scary. ... (Earlier)weplayedashowatanamphitheatredowntowninGreen-ville for a Susan G. Komen benefit, not bad for a first show. It was a huge stage with an enormoustentoverit, itwasgreat.

CrankIt: In your song “The South Florida Dream,” where does one come up with the idea for an el-ephant to be inside a bar?

Jones: It was a dream that I had. I had adreamthatanimalscamealiveandjustkindof took over this bar. I was a fly on the wall and I saw the whole thing. I said ‘Holy cow, I have to make a song about this.’ ... Whenever I sing it live, I sing ‘Damn those magic mush-rooms, I’m seeing shit again.’

an Francisco-based sextet Triple Cobra spent lastmonth touring from California, through middleAmericaanduptoTorontowiththeirglam-rockandpunk-infusedsensibilities.

FreelythrowingaroundstylereferencestoDa-vidBowie,Queenandvariouspunkactson the stage, leadsingerAttiss Ngoval thinks fans and newcomers enjoy theband because they are flamboyant and “over-the-top.”

Along with all the males’ heavy make-up, Triple Cobra has twolovelydancersoutonstageevery time, completingtheir show’s “glamorous” hook with lots of lights, confetti and bubbles.

“I think the nature of the show, it’s something people can get behind, because it’s so over the top, it’s real entertain-ment. You don’t have to be invested in it, you go and you’re entertained. It’s dazzling.” It bears repeating; their live show’s gotbubbles.

But if it was just about looking pretty, Ngoval admitsthat their band would go nowhere fast. So their music is filled withenoughirreverenceandself-referentialhumortokeepitwhere listeners wonder what’s up next.

In “It’s Not Too Late,” off their full-length album Live Fast&DieBeautiful,thebandtakesthewholethemeofbe-ing late to something and how terrible it is, like with love, and turns it on its ear: “It’s not too late, yeah we can still die young. It’s all the same, all the same, all the same.....” And in their most catchy song, “Glitterlust,” Ngoval sings that the glitterlust for listeners is “whatever gets you off, whatever getsyouhighneverisenough...Whateversucksyoudry...”

When asked what band’s glitterlust is, Ngoval said that it’s “exactly what we’re doing now. Being on the road, playing every night, puttingonashoweverywherewego.

“That being our lives, that’s pretty muchthegoalrightnow.IfeellikeIcoulddothisforever.”

Foralltheenergyandstyletheyputon the stage, Ngoval is reminded of how“there’s a lot of not-so-glamorous hours in the van” traveling from gig to gig. “But once we get up there (on the stage), it’s totallyworthit.”

AftergettinganodinSpin as the “band to watch” at this year’s SXSW Music Festival in Austin, Texas, all the hours putintotheirbandmeantmorevalidation,Ngovalsaid.

“That made a big difference for us, on our personal mo-rale, and it’s also helped us get better booking on this tour, helped us play better houses with better promotion. We’re not signed,wedoallofourownpromotions,...(so)anypresslikethatisabigdealforus.”

Doing our part to let people know about ‘em, CrankIt Entertainment chatted more with Ngoval about where theyfeeltheygetagreatlivereception, whatthedealiswiththeirnameandmore.

CrankIt Entertainment Magazine: Which is more important to you all: Playing the best show ever each night, or looking good up there on stage every time?

Attiss Ngoval: It’s not really a choice, because we always lookgreat.So(thechoice)wouldbeplayingthebestshowwepossiblycan.Nomatterwhat,wealwayslookgreat.

CrankIt: Who’s the most beautiful member in the band?

Ngoval:Seriously?Thatwouldgetmeintoso much trouble. ... It’s my wife, D’aria.

CrankIt: Outside of your home-town San Francisco, where do y’all get a good response out on

the road? Y’all got a good review up in Toronto for NXNW last year and at SXSW this year.

Ngoval:Bothofthosefestivals, thereceptionwasexcellent. This tour we’re on right now is the first really extensive tour we’ve gone on. ... We didn’t really know what to expect, if people were going to get it or what. It’s been the same thing everywhere we’ve gone, everybody’s loved it, gotten behind it....Sometimesthesmalltownshowsarejustasexcitingasthebigcity.

CrankIt: What’s been something outrageous, funny, or disgusting that’s happened recently?

Ngoval: Oh, St. Louis. That was definitely the most crude and disgusting thing we experienced out on the road. July 2009 •CrankItMag•21

As I came out of the supermarket that sunny day, pushing my cart of gro-ceries towards my car, I saw an old man with the hood of his car up and a lady sitting inside the car, with the door open.

The old man was looking at the engine. I put my groceries away in my car and continued to watch the old gentleman from about twenty five feet away.

I saw a young man in his early twenties with a grocery bag in his arm, walking towards the old man. The old gentleman saw him coming too, and took a few steps towards him. I saw the old gentleman point to his open hood and say something.

The young man put his grocery bag into what looked like a brand new Cadillac Escalade and then turn back to the old man and I heard him yell at the old gentleman saying, ‘You shouldn’t even be allowed to drive a car at your age.’ And then with a wave

of his hand, he got in his car and peeled rubber out of the parking lot.I saw the old gentleman pull out his handkerchief and mop his brow as he went

back to his car and again looked at the engine. He then went to his wife and spoke with her and appeared to tell her it would be okay. I had seen enough and I approached the old man. He saw me coming and stood straight and as I got near him I said, ‘Looks like you’re having a problem.’

He smiled sheepishly and quietly nodded his head. I looked under the hood myself and knew that whatever the problem was, it was beyond me. Looking around I saw a gas station up the road and told the old man that I would be right back. I drove to the station and went inside and saw three attendants working on cars. I approached one of them and related the problem the old man had with his car and offered to pay them if they could follow me back down and help him.

The old man had pushed the heavy car under the shade of a tree and appeared to be comforting his wife. When he saw us, he straightened up and thanked me for my help. As the mechanics diagnosed the problem (overheated engine) I spoke with the old gentleman.

When I shook hands with him earlier, he had noticed my Marine Corps ring and had commented about it, telling me that he had been a Marine too. I nodded and asked the usual question, ‘What outfit did you serve with?’

He had mentioned that he served with the first Marine Division at Tarawa, Saipan, Iwo Jima and Guadalcanal . He had hit all the big ones and retired from the Corps after the war was over. As we talked we heard the car engine come on and saw the mechan-ics lower the hood.. They came over to us as the old man reached for his wallet, but was stopped by me and I told him I would just put the bill on my AAA card.

He still reached for the wallet and handed me a card that I assumed had his name and address on it and I stuck it in my pocket.. We all shook hands all around again and I said my goodbye’s to his wife. I then told the two mechanics that I would follow them back up to the station. Once at the

station I told them that they had interrupted their own jobs to come along with me and help the old man. I said I wanted to pay for the help, but they refused to charge me.

One of them pulled out a card from his pocket looking exactly like the card the old man had given to me. Both of the men told me then, that they were Marine Corps Re-serves. Once again we shook hands all around and as I was leaving, one of them told me I should look at the card the old man had given to me. I said I would and drove off.

For some reason I had gone about two blocks when I pulled over and took the card out of my pocket and looked at it for a long, long time. The name of the old gentleman was on the card in golden leaf and under his name....... ‘Congressional Medal of Honor Society.’

I sat there motionless looking at the card and reading it over and over. I looked up from the card and smiled to no one but myself and marveled that on this day, four Marines had all come together, because one of us needed help. He was an old man all right, but it felt good to have stood next to greatness and courage and an honor to have been in his presence. Remember, OLD men like him gave you FREEDOM for America . Thanks to those who served...& those who supported them.

America is not at war. The U.S. Military is at war. America is at the Mall. If you don’t stand behind our troops, PLEASE feel free to stand in front of them!

Remember, Freedom isn’t “Free” -- thousands have paid the price so you can enjoy what you have today.

The Hangover - 8 Cranks out of 10 Starring: Bradley Cooper, Zach Galifianakis, Ed Helms, Justin Bartha, Rachael Harris, Heather Graham, Mike TysonDirected by: Todd Phillips

“They gave out rings at the Holocaust?” When you step back to think about it, you know deep down you are wrong to

be laughing at a line like that, even if it’s delivered from a putz like Alan (Wilkes County, N.C. native Zach Galifianakis). In the instant classic The Hangover, nothing is really right, except the belly laughs that follow.

Two friends, Stu (Ed Helms) and Phil (Bradley Cooper), de-cide they’re gonna throw a Vegas bachelor party for their about-to-be-hitched buddy Doug (Justin Bartha), and get his future brother-in-law Alan thrown in the mix. After some wrangling, they all make their way to Vegas, make a toast, and… You spend the rest of the movie retracing their steps and try to resolve just

exactly how they lost the groom amidst the revelry.Somehow a tiger, a chicken and a baby find their way into their burned out suite, Stu’s

missing a tooth, and the three of them have to get the groom back for the wedding that same day. The Hangover is really just one gag playing out after another, and there isn’t anything prob-lematic about that since they all produce a bunch of laughs.

The trailer ruined a few surprises, like Tyson’s appearance, and the tiger, and how one of the guys gets married before he’s supposed to. But then comes a whole bunch of crazy-good stuff, like the ride around in the police car, the hitmen and other hot messes for the friends to wade their way through. Many people have bizarre funny drunk stories; The Hangover is a hilarious fulfillment of those realities turned into fantasy.

The one thing that would’ve been appreciated more in this movie would’ve been around five to 10 more minutes of actually retracing their steps. After they’re passed out in their suite, there were a couple of times you got to see what shenanigans they actually pulled, as well as incriminating photos that play over the end credits. That was such hilariously good stuff that it left me wanting a bit more of it.

Other than that, no complaints. It’s a raunchy comedy, so you’ll know beforehand what you’re getting yourself into. If you’re fine with that, knock yourself out with The Hangover. Review by T.J. Royal

When the store manager returned from lunch, he no-ticed his clerk’s hand was bandaged, but before he could ask about the bandage, the clerk had some very good news for him.

“Guess what, sir?” the clerk said. “I finally sold that terrible, ugly suit we’ve had so long!”

“Do you mean that repulsive pink-and-blue double-breasted thing?!” the manager asked.

“That’s the one!”

That’s great!” the manager cried, “I thought we’d nev-er get rid of that monstrosity! That had to be the ugliest suit we’ve ever had! But tell me, why is your hand ban-daged?”

“Oh,” the clerk replied, “after I sold the guy that suit, his guide dog bit me.”

At the end of a long day, all the fisherman had caught was one small, red salmon. He was about to kill it when the salmon shouted, “Wait, I’m much too small!”

“Wow, a talking salmon,” the fisherman exclaimed, “What’s your name?”

“Rusty,” replied the salmon. “Please throw me back into the sea!”

The fisherman did so.

About a year later, the man was fishing the same spot when he again caught Rusty! “Amazing,” exclaimed the fisherman, “What have you been doing since I last caught you?”

“I’ve been sitting on the wreck of the good ship Titanic writing poetry, it’s very inspirational there.”

The fisherman read some of the poems and was quite impressed.

“These should be published,” he said. “Have you thought of a title for them?”

After some thought the fish said, “I’ll call them “Salmon Rusty’s Titanic Verses.”

A reporter hears about an amazing pig and goes out to the farm in Arkansas to get the story.

He finds the farmer near the barn and asks him if the rumours about his pig are true.

“Yep,” says the farmer. “I got a pig that started squeal-ing real loud when the house was on fire. He woke us all up and so we all got to safety. Otherwise we might have been killed. That’s some pig.”

“And didn’t the pig save your boy from drowning?” asked the reporter.

“Yep, he raced right into the pond and pulled my little boy out by his shirt collar. Saved his life,” the farmer says, wiping a tear from his eye.

“Wow, I’d like to see this pig,” the reporter says.

“Well, come on over here.”

The farmer leads the reporter over to a nearby pen. There in the mud the reporter sees a pig with a wooden leg.

“Why does he have a wooden leg?”

The farmer replies, “Well, you don’t eat a pig like that all at once.”
