Chicken Annie’s Original, PittsburgAnn Frances Rehak met Charley Pichler in 1914, and married on April 28, 1917. Charley, a miner, was in a mine accident in March 1933. Severely injured, it was now up to Annie to become the breadwinner of the family. Ann started serving chicken dinners in a small way in 1934. As the demand became greater, Ann took care of the purchasing, cooking, finances, etc., Charlie did some of the food preparation, bartended and ran the register. In 1963, Annie and Charlie decided to retire and let their children take over the operation. A new building in 1972 with increased seating and an enlarged menu was added to better serve the customers. What began in 1934 continues today with Annie’s children and grandchildren.

Chicken Mary’s, PittsburgJoe and Mary Zerngast started Chicken Mary’s in the early 1940s. Joe, a miner by trade, was no longer able to work due to poor health. In order to help support the family, Mary turned to what she knew best, cooking. In the beginning, with Joe’s help, Mary served customers in their home, seating them at the kitchen table. Soon, word spread about the great food and it became impossible to seat everyone in the Zerngast home. Consequently, in 1945, Joe and Mary purchased the Foxtown Mining Camp Pool Hall and moved it to a location just west of the current Chicken Mary’s. In 1961 Joe died but Mary, with the help of her son Zig and his wife Tootie, continued to run the restaurant. The current restaurant was built in 1966 and the staff work hard to ensure the fine heritage the Zerngasts began 60+ years ago.

Gebhardt’s Chicken Dinners, MulberryUpon receiving his honorable discharge from the United States Army in 1942, Ted Gebhardt married Maycle and they decided to move back to Ted’s home near Mulberry and run the family farm. Ted and Maycle purchased “The Little Honky Tonk” bar, a small watering hole located next to the farm and operated it until 1946. Meg (Ted & Maycle’s daughter and current owner) said it was her Dad’s signature dinner and still is today!

Barto’s Idle Hour, FrontenacRay Barto opened Barto’s Idle Hour in the early 1950’s to satisfy the need for what he deemed “a place to provide weekend entertainment.” Barto’s signature was the plethora of polka bands that performed there every Friday and Saturday night. In 1965, Ray opened a chicken restaurant right next door to the bar despite the presence of three other established chicken restaurants in the county -- Chicken Annie’s, Chicken Mary’s and Gephardt’s. The popularity of the place grew because it offered a little of something for everyone -- food from the descendants found in Frontenac including the strong Italian presence, German and Slavic influence, polka music, and a social spot for all ages. A variety of local polka musicians continue to perform live every Friday and Saturday night.

Chicken Annie’s Original, PittsburgAnn Frances Rehak met Charley Pichler in 1914, and married on April 28, 1917. Charley, a miner, was in a mine accident in March 1933. Severely injured, it was now up to Annie to become the breadwinner of the family. Ann started serving chicken dinners in a small way in 1934. As the demand became greater, Ann took care of the purchasing, cooking, finances, etc., Charlie did some of the food preparation, bartended and ran the register. In 1963, Annie and Charlie decided to retire and let their children take over the operation. A new building in 1972 with increased seating and an enlarged menu was added to better serve the customers. What began in 1934 continues today with Annie’s children and grandchildren.

Chicken Mary’s, PittsburgJoe and Mary Zerngast started Chicken Mary’s in the early 1940s. Joe, a miner by trade, was no longer able to work due to poor health. In order to help support the family, Mary turned to what she knew best, cooking. In the beginning, with Joe’s help, Mary served customers in their home, seating them at the kitchen table. Soon, word spread about the great food and it became impossible to seat everyone in the Zerngast home. Consequently, in 1945, Joe and Mary purchased the Foxtown Mining Camp Pool Hall and moved it to a location just west of the current Chicken Mary’s. In 1961 Joe died but Mary, with the help of her son Zig and his wife Tootie, continued to run the restaurant. The current restaurant was built in 1966 and the staff work hard to ensure the fine heritage the Zerngasts began 60+ years ago.

Gebhardt’s Chicken Dinners, MulberryUpon receiving his honorable discharge from the United States Army in 1942, Ted Gebhardt married Maycle and they decided to move back to Ted’s home near Mulberry and run the family farm. Discover the beauty of Pittsburg State UniversityNo visit to Crawford County would be complete without a stop at Pittsburg State University. Pittsburg State, a comprehensive graduate-level state university with an enrollment of more than 7,200, is the economic, social and cultural hub for Crawford County.

Residents and visitors alike may choose from hundreds of activities at PSU (many of them free) throughout the year. Rotating exhibits in the university’s art galleries, concerts and recitals in McCray Recital Hall, PSU Theatre productions, Opera Workshops and several major lecture series give visitors cultural options usually available only in large metropolitan areas.

Fans of Gorilla athletics are known for their passion and thousands of visitors come each year for contests in 11 men’s and women’s sports. Perhaps no single athletics-related event is better known than the communitywide GorillaFest tailgate party before home football game.

For those in a more contemplative mood, a walk through PSU’s beautifully landscaped campus might be in order. Walk from the historic Oval to the tranquil setting of Timmons Chapel on the shore of University Lake. Along the way, take time to see several outdoor sculptures and the Centennial Mural.

No visit to Pittsburg State University would be complete without a stop at the Veterans Memorial on the east side of the campus. The memorial, which honors all veterans, is unlike any other in the U.S. Since its construction in 2004, more than 100,000 visitors have spent time in the memorial’s peaceful amphitheater, where a pool reflects the eternal flame and the black granite panels that cover the memorial’s interior walls.

Arma V-J HomecomingHeld annually the second full weekend of August, the Arma V-J Homecoming is the most continuously celebrated V-J parade and celebration in the United States. The event features arts and crafts, motorcycle show and competition, veteran’s parade, carnival and rides, and tractor pull. Arma V-J Homecoming is home to Kansas’ Largest Mud Volleyball Tournament. This wildly popular event features over 1,500 participants, 150 teams and divisions for all age groups.

Little Balkans Days, PittsburgHeld annually on Labor Day Weekend, the history, heritage, art and culture that is unique to Southeast Kansas in relationship to the Balkans region in Europe is celebrated. Events are held Friday, Saturday & Sunday including activities such as: King-Queen Coronation, a Big Band Swing Dance, Cruise Night, arts and crafts vendors, food vendors, car and motorcycle show, quilt show, carnival rides, train rides, various cook-offs, homemade wine competition and model plane exhibition, as well as two stages providing live music for the large street dance Saturday night. The Gorilla Century 100-mile bike ride from Pittsburg, through Cherokee and Crawford Counties and back to Pittsburg is also held in conjunction with Little Balkans Days.

Four States Open and Four States Women’sA bowling tournament so large, it starts the first weekend of March and continues each weekend through mid-May. Held at Holiday Lanes in Pittsburg; the event brings in teams from KS, MO, OK, AR, TX and NE. Great Plains Regional Fox HuntHeld annually in early March, conducted by Coal Valley Hounds at the Wesbrook Bar-X Ranch, 5450 Northwest Coal Valley Road in McCune. Since 2002, Dr. Wes and Dr. Kathleen Sandness have conducted this event featuring 400 hunters, riders, their hounds and mounts. Kansas Road Cycling Championships and Criterium ChampionshipsHeld annually in June, the road race course is held on a 13-mile loop east of Arma and through rural Crawford County. Arma Mud Volleyball TournamentHeld annually on the second weekend in August and in conjunction with the Arma V-J Homecoming Celebration, the Arma Mud Volleyball Tournament is the largest mud volleyball tournament in Kansas. With over 150 teams and 1,500 participants and spectators, the Arma Mud Volleyball Tournament is more than just another tournament, it’s a social event and one-of-a-kind spectacle. The event takes place south of the Arma City Pool and is conducted by the Arma American Legion Sons of the American Legion.

Citizens Bank BowlHeld annually on the first Sunday in December, the Citizens Bank Bowl is a NJCAA sanctioned postseason bowl game featuring some of the top junior college football teams in the NJCAA ranks. In 2009, the game featured No. 1 ranked Fort Scott vs. No. 2 Blinn College for the NJCAA National Championship. In 2010, top-ranked Butler Community College faced No. 2 Navarro College for the NJCAA National Championship. The game is played at PSU’s Carnie Smith Stadium with a 1 p.m. kickoff.

Gorilla Invitational Wheelchair Basketball TournamentHeld annually on the third weekend in December, the Gorilla Invita-tional Wheelchair Basketball Tournament features a dozen wheelchair basketball teams from the Midwest competing in a two-day tournament. Teams in the past have included the Kansas Wheelhawks, the Oklahoma State Spokes, Arkansas Rollin’ Razorbacks, Missouri Tigers, Madonna Magic, University of Texas-Arlington Movin’ Mavs, St. Louis Rams and many others. The ABA features over 1,000 tournaments in 42 states, low entry fees, sponsorship programs, and a level playing field for all anglers.
